Guest Reviews
- Miyo (10/5): - Our room was amazing. All of the baths (in-room bath, private bath, public bath) were excellent. The meals were amazing! The Taiko show was fun. Happy hour was great. The town was enjoyable. We were supposed to get limo service from the station in a Toyota Alphard, but instead we were picked up in diesel shuttle bus. Location claimed we didn’t provide the advance notice required for such service (complimentary due to paying for the top level room), however we have communication records from 90 days prior to arrival up until 24 hour prior. This was a small let down in an otherwise amazing stay.
- siu (7/5): the hotel is dated but worth staying one night - near a beautiful stream, can go for a short walk people from the trail across the stream may be able to look into the open air onsen
quite disappointing that part of the dinner and breadfast is a buffet type, not the traditional setmeal
- Natalie (10/5): Incredibly relaxing, lovely staff & beautiful in the winter time - We absolutely loved our Ryokan stay at Kagari Kisshotei. We were picked up from Kagaonsen station by the hotel, which made getting to Yamanakaonsen easy, as it's about a 20 minute drive from the station. The moment we walked into our room we felt relaxed, with a complimentary Sake to enjoy, as well as our own onsen on the balcony in our room - which was just magical with the river outlook, with everything covered in snow. The staff really connected with us and appreciated our Japanese language attempts throughout our stay, especially at our Kaiseki dinner, which was an amazing dining experience. We also booked the private onsen within the Ryokan, which is available to hotel guests in allocated time slots, which was also lovely to do after our Kaiseki dinner. Definitely worth the Half Board type stay with dinner & breakfast included. The traditional Japanese type breakfast included in our half board stay had quite a lot of fish & cooked food we weren't sure about first thing in the morning, but that is just personal preference for breakfast flavours we're not used to, being westerners. We did try everything, but there was a lot of food!
- Hung chun (10/5):
- Hermanni (10/5): - The staff was super helpful and the courtesy Shuttle bus was very nicely organized!
The rentable private bath is totally worth it! A must try! -

- Tienken (9/5): Superb - food. staff. onsen.
- Megan (8/5): Peaceful and traditional - This was a very relaxing inn. We had an onsen in our room and were also invited to use one of the larger onsen in another part of the inn. We were able to use both without anyone asking or questing us about tattoos.
The meals were served in a dining room setting with both buffet items and a multi-course presentation, for both dinner and breakfast. The food was complex and interesting, and they made very lovely vegetarian meals special for my husband which were equally complex and fancy. The tempura at dinner was particularly excellent, I wish I'd had more!
The view from our room was all green treetops with a rushing stream below. It felt secluded and very peaceful.
- Marianna (10/5): Exceptional -
- Donald (10/5): Lovely - Staff was so nice, location is beautiful and the baths were great. Carpeting was very worn in my he hallways.
- Mike (10/5): Exceptional -
- Mike (9/5): Authentic Japanese onsen hotel, a bit dated but wonderfull experience overall. - Location is beautiful. Very peaceful and quiet. Shuttle service offered to and from train station. Staff and service great. The town and hotel weren’t overrun with western tourists, at least in Golden Week when we visited. Japanese style meals were great. Onsen temp is a bit hot for a long soak.
- Xin (7/5): Gorgeous place, friendly staff, good food. - The staff are nice , kind and friendly. The location is beautiful and I loved the onsen ! Don't want to spoil it cause it's best to be surprised but it's surrounded by nature, it's big and it's just so beautiful. The food is also really good, well cooked and free flow of drinks. Unfortunately, I don't drink alcohol but I could see everyone else having the time of their lives ! It's such great value. I had to choose a Japanese style room because the western style was sold out. It might just be my own preference but the futon was too thin and so it felt really hard when sleeping. That's my only pet peeve but other than that, room was lovely, big and spacious. Gorgeous view.
- Isabella (10/5): Exceptional - Loved it! Very authentic and unique. Amazing meals, The property is not new but it’s well maintained, spotlessly clean, and has a lot of character, with beautiful views and location on a river. The onsen is heaven. We were the only non Japanese guests there, so it will definitely be an authentic experience
- Yeowbeng (8/5): Very good -
- Kong (10/5): Excellent stay - Room was spacious and the bed was comfortable; different menu breakfast and dinner for 2 nights, nicely presented and delicious; in room onsen, private onsen, and public onsen are great, all staffs are friendly and helpful, especially Miss Tanaba was excellent, very caring and helpful for my wife.
- Annamaria (10/5): Location and friendly staff made our stay perfect! - The Yamanaka Onsen Kagari Kisshotei was the perfect place to unwind after traveling Japan for almost 2 weeks. The location was beautiful and so serene, alongside the river. The staff was very friendly and went out of their way to help us enjoy our stay. When I forgot to notify them that our daughter was a vegetarian prior to arriving, they made sure to accommodate with her breakfast and dinner meals were just as delicious as ours. The food was a work of art and the it was a pleasure to relax in their onsens prior to returning home. I highly recommend staying here!
- Neil (8/5): Very good -
- Lee (6/5): Pleasant - Great location for riverside walk. Food was well cooked and very tasty with free flow of alcohol. The hotel interior, the room and onsen are very old and in need of some renovation.
- Sy (8/5): Very good - Tanaba-san was exceptionally friendly and tried to assist and answer our questions. Facilities were also well maintained and cleaned. Shuttle bus service was great to bring us to Kaga onsen station. We booked haldlf board. Were rather disappointed with the dinner as it added fusion/international elements. We were expecting traditional Japanese dinner.
- Tai (9/5): Superb - Nice environment, staff were very friendly. Some things in the room are a bit aged
- Reyes (8/5): Great all inclusive stay - I really enjoyed all of the activities the hotel had to offer ranging from happy hour, snack time and the drum performance. It’s really an all inclusive experience. Although I explained my dietary needs. In the end things got lost in translation. I do appreciate the effort however.
- Michael (10/5): Exceptional -
- Edmund (9/5): Superb - excellent staff, nice onsen. worth a try
- Xuan (9/5): relaxing and happy stay with family and for romance. A lot free voucher for Onsen town shops. - Dinner including crab. superb! Different menu for 2 nights. nice food. Convenient shuttle bus. Just beside the river, at the entrance to river track walk. Beautiful view oversea the mountain and river side. Private onsen so refreshing.
- Glenn (4/5): Would not go back. - In room private onsen bath was good. Big enough for 2 and easily add hot spring water as required. Pleasant trail walk along the river. Very limited English among all staff. Restaurant had fixed menu for both breakfast and dinner but only in Japanese. You only know what you will get when it is brought to the table. Hallway carpets really dirty. Front desk staff rather indifferent.
- Paula (9/5): Superb - Loved stepping away from all the busy tourist areas. Booked a private onsen which was needed from all the walking. Great chance to relax. Lovely walk by the river and cute little town. Definitely off the beaten track. Plenty of food offered if you are wanting to experience the traditional Japanese cuisine.
- Howard (9/5): Superb -
- Victoria (2/5): Wouldn’t come back - It’s in a good location to do a scenic loop of gorge and town shopping Its old. Tired and kind of gruff in feel in general.
- June (10/5): Exceptional - We love the service. Front Desk service staff Monika was excellent. Very helpful & caring. Best of our stay. The breakfast & dinner crews are awesome. very friendly. the senior elder staff are very friendly too, they tried their best to communicate nothing.
- Andrew (9/5): Perfect side trip away from the crowds of Kyoto - Location and experience of Japanese food. Staff were so friendly towards our young daughter despite our inability to speak Japanese. Nothing
- Anastasia (8/5): Very good -
- Olivia (8/5): A beautiful onsen with a stunning view in a charming town. - This onsen town is so incredibly beautiful with its mountains, the river and of course the hot springs. Staff at the hotel were very efficient and lovely. One of the best parts about our stay was the coupons they gave us to use around the town. We tried local sake, beef croquettes from an awesome local butcher, soft serve and more. The onsen hotel itself was beautiful, the views are amazing and it was kind of empty when we went which was a bonus. Highly recommend booking the 45 min private bath session in the hinoki bath. It’s beautiful. Incredible traditional Japanese meals, lots and lots of food so come with a big appetite. Dinner came with all you can drink and all you can eat tempura. There were also lots of bonus things to enjoy in the hotel too eg happy hour, free pudding at night, free local desserts at certain times, free coffee and tea in the lobby. Also the shuttle bus to and from the station was awesome. You couldn’t use the onsen between 10am and 2pm, I guess for cleaning. We just used that time to explore the town, go on the beautiful forest walk along the river and use up our coupons!
- Yiu (7/5): Good -
- Colin (10/5): Exceptional -
- Geok (10/5): The staffs are very helpful and welcoming. Good location for nature walk nearby. - Nicely presented delicious breakfast. Salads are good and the food portion is sufficient.
The staffs are fantastic, courteous and efficient. None
- Patsara (10/5): Exceptional - We had a great vacation here, friendly and nice staff, good environment in and around hotel, many activities and drinks provide by the hotel. Highly recommend ;)
- Alexandra (10/5): Relaxing stay in beautiful surrounds. - Had an enjoyable and relaxing stay here. We travelled from Osaka for one night, which was quite out of our way but we wanted to try the onsen experience. The onsen itself was quite empty when we went - I was often the only person there. The food was plentiful with an interesting range of dishes to try.
We did the walk along the river which was a winter wonderland! No need to book the cypress bath. We did not use it.
- Narumol (7/5): Easy to stay the whole day - Onsen and so may complimentaries. Room was cold. Dinner and breakfast are not worth paying for especially breakfast.
- Jie (10/5): Exceptional - Unexpected nice and bountiful service, kind service people who tried their best to serve us in English.
- Yoshi (10/5): Very pleasant stay! - This hotel was a very pleasant surprise in many ways. It's a thirty minute shuttle ride from Kaga Onsen Station (be sure to reserve the shuttle ahead of time). We reserved a room with our own open-air bath, which was awesome! It was very relaxing. However, the best was yet to come - the public outdoor onsen was THE BEST we've been to. Very nice and the view in the morning is gorgeous!
We decided to have an early dinner. This hotel is a little bit different from other hotels that serve dinner, but it was interesting and actually nice. You help yourself to your own drinks (except sake) and tempura - but you can drink and eat as much as you like. For breakfast, you help yourself to your drinks and salad. Although the food is good, it is nothing exceptional.
There were several delightful surprises which we immensely enjoyed. The first was the taiko drums performance in the lobby in the evening. It was AWESOME!! Eat an early dinner so you will finish in time for this performance. We enjoyed a pudding snack while waiting for the taiko performance. In the morning, tokoroten was provided. Both snacks were great!
If you have time, take a walk through the little onsen town. Although it's small, it's quite nice and interesting. The waitress serving our table during dinner was in a rather sour mood. We noticed she was the same towards other guests. She was also there in the morning, with the same poor attitude. Her sour mood affects your mood so your meals are not as enjoyable.
- 伊雲斯 (8/5): so far so good! - so far so good! The food and servoices of restaurant's staffs is the best of others! without goos communication of the reception!
- Douglas (9/5): I would return to this ryokan because overall it was a good experience. - The Kaiseki dinners were very good which included all you can eat shrimp and vegetable tempura including whole eggs in tempura and free beer and soft drinks. The individually served Japanese breakfast was a real treat because many other ryokans unfortunately now serve buffet breakfasts. The staff who served the Kaiseki dinners and breakfasts were excellent!! They were very friendly and caring. The carpets in the hallways and lobby need to be replaced because they were old and stained. Ot would definitely help English speaking guests if there were more English written brochures and handouts at the front desk because many of the staff at the front desk have difficulty communicating in English.
- Impreza4me (9/5): Superb - Nice and well maintained Ryokan with lovely view. The room was comfortable and well lid. Staff were very helpful and friendly. There's shuttle bus from/to the train station. It will be nice to have vending machines inside hotel. Outdoor Onsen is a little bit small. There quite a few stinky bugs walking around so couldn't open the room windows.
- Luiz (10/5): Exceptional -
- Anonymous (10/5): Exceptional -
- Torben (8/5): Spa hotel with amazing nature and good of food. - Staff were welcoming. The Onsen (public bath). The nature around the village.
The dinner and breakfast menu was good. Building and equipment are used, needs refreshment.
Parking 5-10 min walk on the street.
The staff proposed on time slot for dinner, then changed it for finally call to propose a 3rd time.
- Carolina (10/5): Relaxing authentic Japanese experience - The room, onsen and dinner were amazing. I can’t explain the beauty of the place completely in the nature. Amazing place! We had a less nice meeting with a lot of green bugs inside our room. It was really disgusting but I have to compliment the staff that managed the whole issue with a lot of respect and immediately. We got a free private onsen as apologies and the room then was perfectly cleaned up by those animals. Inconveniences can always happen and in this case the staff was really positively reactive.
My only suggestion would be to do not open the windows when you clean the rooms to avoid the insects to enter.
- Caitlyn (8/5): Restful and scenic onsen resort - Private onsen rooms are beautiful. Staff is kind and attentive. Meals are served in restaurants within the resort and a shuttle is provided for travel to and from the resort - amazing! If you have a phobia to flying bugs (beetles), consider booking outside of the fall months. They are more active/present during this time (though harmless!)
- Tsui (9/5): Superb -
- Amanda (9/5): Had a lovely 2 night stay! Would greatly recommend to people looking to relax! - Staff was friendly and helpful, going out of their way to make sure we had a lovely stay! The room was spacious and had a beautiful view of the gorge. They set up the beds for you each evening if you pick a Japanese style room (which you did) and even offer to pack it up for you each morning as well. In the room, on top of the listed amenities, they provided a tea set so you could make a fresh cup in the morning as you overlooked the gorge. It also had a lot of natural light, which I love! There were also lots of services that you could use, onsens (private and public), suggested shops, spa options at their sister hotel, and additional tours. My husband and I used the private rock onsen and it was heavenly. Our room showed a little wear and tear, nicked wood on the door frames, minor food stains on curtains. Major things were updated, just little things around the edges that needed to be fixed.
- Dennis (10/5): Exceptional - Great food, very friendly and acommodating staff, 3 great meals a day (including sushi made in front of your eyes as part of a special festival), wonderful private onsen, spacious rooms and a wonderful view onto the trees and river.
- Aimee (8/5): Very good -
- Alicia (10/5): Exceptional -
- Udai (10/5): Exceptional -
- Chloe (7/5): Good -
- Kwee (10/5): Highly memorable and pampered onsen getaway - We travelled by train and thankful the hotel provided free and punctual shuttle from and to Kagaonsen train station. As we stayed for 3 nights, we had many extras added (eg lunch making it full board, one free use of private bath in hotel, one free use of public bath in town centre, 3 free colourful yukata rental, sweet coupons and transport coupon options, etc). The hotel provided small desserts in the room and lobby (3x) daily and the creme caramel is yummy! Hotel also provided a carry bag with towel and toiletries for the visit to the public bath. We enjoyed all the delicious meals provided including the free drinks and the restaurant staff were very efficient and friendly making us feel at home. Hotel ensured we had different dinners for our 3 night stay which is much appreciated. Our Japanese room has a great river view, big windows, bright with good lighting for the night. The 2 layer futon bedding is so comfortable and the pillow is firm and supports the neck well. Relaxed and enjoyed many soaks in the well equipped indoor and outdoor onsen which was open from 0600 to late. Hotel easily access the beautiful Kakusenkei Gorge walk. All in all we truly enjoyed our pampered stay in Kagari Kisshotei and highly recommends it for those looking for a relaxing getaway !
- Viveka (8/5): Great place in all. - Lovely onsen ryokan by the river, food was good, all inclusive which felt luxurious, and staff friendly and attentive. Third time in Japan and not the first time to stay at a traditional ryokan with a kaiseki dinner but it is always a marvellous experience. So wonderful to immerse youself into the hot outdoor baths, with rain dripping on the roof and the vivid river passing by. We dis not explore the little village and the nearby other baths/spahotels but there is plenty of opportunity to do that, since the hotel offers a convenient shuttle service. The place is a bit worn down and would benefit from a bit of restoration (of old mats, old wooden pool in the private bath). But that is a minor comment!
- Niels (10/5): wonderful vista, beautiful onsen - great location, friendly staff Upgraded to a room with seperate beds as a couple
- Mei (10/5): excellent - friendly staff excellent service
hotel provided a bento lunch which is really
private onsen is nice if they can give one time per night everything is excellent
- Alan (8/5): Perfect place for a short stay, good food and the onsen. - The location was ideal. The room was comfortable well provided with snacks, fruits and drinks. It had a great river view, and it was relaxing hearing the river water flowing. The attached open air onsen was really great and allowed us to soak in the warm water from the hot spring and enjoying the view of the river and trees. Very relaxing. Dinners and breakfast were provided and very elaborate and well done; it was very good. And thanks for the bento set which was thoughtfully packed for us when we checked out to go to the airport. Everything was good!
- Camila (7/5): Overall I enjoyed my stay, because the area is gorgeous, but for the price I’d expect more. - The hotel was nice located if you want to explore Kagaonsen and the beautiful river and sightseeing. The private and public onsens were nice and the bedroom was big and futtons were comfortable. Food is good, nothing memorable, but if you are into typical Japanese food, you’!! enjoy it! The carpets are rundown, some areas need maintainance and our bath smell like moldy. We were the only foreigners in the hotel that weekend and there was only one staff that was able to communicate well with us. We checked out late so we were told we would be the last ones to eat dinner. With two young children, I was not happy to be told to have dinner at 8pm! Both my kids were sleeping on the table and they did not eat any of the food that was included with the stay, which was really expensive btw! On our last day, they wanted to charge for one more children: in Japan, they count the stay by the number of people in the bedroom, not as Booking who automatically adds a toddler for free and 5yo as half pension. The fact that my children were sleeping during a dinner that was already paid from Booking, and they still wanted to charge me again was not acceptable, but they finally said they would take care of it.
- Rose (10/5): Enjoyed it very much. - Beautiful and therapeutic mineral baths. Riverside location. Abundant and tasty food and drinks. Enjoyable drum
performances weekend nights.
- Michiko (8/5): A good place to relax - Service, shuttle bus, bath meals Toilet.
- Modica (10/5): Exceptional -
- M (8/5): Very good - the onsen was superb the rooms were small
- Barry (9/5): Excellent facilities and huge meals . A little pricey at least for our room and we stayed for 2 nights @ Canadian $1060 - Location on river and green belt area, quiet and big Tatami Room. Meals were excellent. Not too much apart from booking our own cypress spa bath - only to find it was a small box thing in tiny shower room. we’re under impression it was a pool outside room on edge of river but those were in public area for all to use. But room was big and very nice though.
- Ake (9/5): Enjoyed so much about beautiful onsen by the river & fantastic kaiseki dinner - onsen tabs
dinner not much
