Guest Reviews
- Madrigal (7/5): Bastabte buena - La zona, la ubicacion La ropa de cama estaba sucia, el innodoro estaba suelto
- Katrin (10/5): - Alles Nichts
- Silke (10/5): -
- Beth (8/5): Loved our stay, Peter and Francisca were very nice and we loved the rustic vibe of the cabin. - Great place to see Quetzals, walk trails and enjoy amazing views over the cloud forest. A hook (even a nail would do) to hang towels, extra bin liners for a longer stay when self catering, more reasonable pick up price from the road.
- Barbara (9/5): - Wonderful rustic cabin in a superb location. Owners very responsive and helped organise a quetzal viewing. A couple of spotted wood quails walking around the property were a bonus.
- Cameron (9/5): This spot is amazing and really great value for a cabin. - The views are amazing! Shower was a little tricky to figure out the hot water.
- Gary (9/5): Gorgeous views, immersed in the sounds of nature, helpful hosts. - The hosts were extremely accommodating. Nelson gave us a ride from where the bus dropped us off to our cabin, and helped us get our heavy bags back up the steep hill when we left. Peter went out of his way to help solve our travel difficulties for us. Our cabin had a gorgeous view of the cloud forest valley and we were surrounded by a variety of birds singing (some of which we managed to see!). The spotted wood quail calling in the evening were magical. We walked up the road to visit Miriam's cafe and enjoyed close-up views of hummingbirds, toucanets, woodpeckers, and more.
- Belliot (9/5): Très bonne adresse - Personnel très sympa et emplacement idéal
- Kingfisher (1/5): - The only thing is the location. Avoid this place totally despite the location. We were given Cabin 2 and shown around by the caretaker. Upon closer inspection we found mouse droppings and immediately contacted the owner who sent the caretaker who dismissed them as ground pepper(seriously!!) and just wiped them on the floor with his bare hands.
As it was extremely late we decided to move the following day however we spotted a mouse running across the kitchen and that was the last straw and we immediately packed up and looked for alternative accommodation late in the night. It was all very stressful.
As the caretaker does not speak English and the owner is not there communication was very difficult.
The owner did take responsibility which was good.
I sincerely hope they upgrade the cabins as the location is lovely.

Pár hodin práce a chata by zase příjemně sloužila...
- Mayra (10/5): -
- Berti (10/5): En medio de la naturaleza , con opciones de caminatas y una buena vista. - Rodeado de naturaleza y el clima . La ducha del baño y el internet que el primer día no andaba
- Lorena (10/5): Wonderful! - The location is amazing if you enjoy nature, hiking and birding. Great hotspot for birdwatching. The cabin is clean and the kitchen utilities in the cabins are great to prepare your meals while you are there. There are some great restaurants around as well. We had a lovely stay and I definitely recommend it to others who want a calm place in the cloud forest to relax and hike. The roads inside the property are a bit hard to drive in and parking is not very easy (very steep!) but other than that everything was amazing!
- Laurent (7/5): Good -
- Timothy (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sanfl (8/5): Safe and convenient stay with Kitchen - The owners are very nice, caring and helpful people. Staff is very nice, even though one of the two people did not speak English at all. The place was decent size with 2 beds (one full size and one twin size), bathroom was spacious. Bathroom sink has cold water but shower has hot water. The small kitchen has microwave and fridge and few dishes. The unit had a portable heater, which was great. I moved the heater wherever I was sitting or lying down, else it would have been freezing. The place is very safe for a single female.
If you take public bus and get down at the Park entrance, the owners can make arrangement for you to get picked up for around $10. I stayed 2 nights and couldn't sleep properly as around 9 or 10 PM, a rat ran across the room. I had food in my bags, so I took them all out, kept it in the fridge or covered it with the towel. I let the light open all night, as I was afraid if the rat will be running here and there and if I need to get up in the night.
The place is poorly insulated. In the bathroom, the window is somewhat open for ventilation and cannot be close. So, it gets very cold in the bathroom in the night. Few easy improvements can make this place much better and I have shared those with the owner (mirror in the room, as room is much warmer than the bathroom), hangers and some shelves in the bathroom (as bathroom has lots of space), a rodent catching device and relocate the rat. A closed cabinet to store the food, so it is protected from rodents.
- Johan (9/5): Beautiful place for nature lovers - Fantastic place in the middle of nature! The cabin was really nice with an incredible view. Very nice remember of the place. Just a small bémol concerning the shower which some problems to have hot water, a heater which is a little bit bit too small to warm the cabin and also, very hard mattress in the bed, which could uncomfortable for some people. But it is minor points as compared to the place and the hospitality of people.
- David (10/5): Great - Location, space, staff Nothing
- Benjamin (8/5): Very good - Quiet spot and a nice cabin with a big bathroom and a fridge, coffee/tea maker and additional blankets
Quetzal Tour was awesome and 25$ pP not that much the cabin could have been a little cleaner
- Brian (7/5): Lovely area, great scenery, away from the crowds, fabulous bird life all around, including the quetzals. - Fabulous location with great views from the cabin and a lovely veranda to sit out on The first cabin we were put in we found had a rat in the living area. Francisca was quick to react and moved us into a different cabin with much better facilities which we really appreciated.
- Megan (8/5): Very good - We got upgraded to a bigger cabin after a miscommunication where we thought we would have a full kitchen. The first Cabin, Cabin A was basic and fine for a short stay as long as you were happy to go out to eat. As we didn't have a car, and the road is extremely steep to walk up/down, this was tricky for us. The heater also didn't work so we had a very cold first night! However, we were moved to Cabin 0 which was amazing. A full kitchen and beautiful views, very well equipped!
If you don't have a car, I'd recommend staying further down into the valley for more amenities. However, we took a Quetzal tour with Dantica Lodge over the road which was fantastic and only 1 minute away. It was lovely and quiet and we enjoyed our stay. Broken heater in Cabin A, but we were happy to be moved to a more expensive and much bigger cabin for no extra cost.
- Agnes (10/5): Exceptional - We had a great time here. Beautiful view, nice accommodation, charming people... everything was perfect ! Would recommend. Nothing
- Marina (8/5): Very good -
- Davis (3/5): Sorry but can’t recommend it despite beautiful location. - Scenic location. Guide provided by the property was very good to spot quetzales. No one was present when we arrived. No hot water on day 1. Staff made a repair, but still no hot water on day 2. Mouse droppings in the cabin.
- Noäm (8/5): Very good -
- Mary (8/5): Very good -
- Dian (8/5): Very good -
- Judy (8/5): Perfect for what we wanted to do. - Beautiful location and seeing the Quetzals on property. This property met our expectations and we have no complaints.
- Jennie (9/5): Excellent peaceful place to stay - Great cabina in the forest....excellent views and trails down to the river from outside the front door. Luckily we were given a cabina with cooking facilities which was a great bonus. Plenty of blankets and hot shower!
Would recommend anyone to stay in this peaceful forest for a few nights away from the heat
- Carol (10/5): Lovely - Fantastic views, nice trails with plenty of views. Saw a pair of Quetzals on first night in tree by Cabin C. Great cabin with fire and plenty of blankets. Good kitchen.
- Mikaela (4/5): Worst place we stayed in CR. - Location is good. Trails next to cabins. Parking place. View. Casa A needs attention. Feels like they don't care. No simple electric hob, even though they're is plenty of space for it. Blankets visibly dirty. Animal living in wall scratching all night. Place smells like an animal. Pay a little extra and stay somewhere else. Lots of cabinas in the area owned by locals.
- Margaret (10/5): Quetzal valley cabins - The location in the mountains is exceptional, as is the view from the cabin balcony. We saw quetzals at cabin 3. We had breakfast at Miriams cafe a few minutes walk uphill and there saw a wonderful array of birds including hummingbirds, acorn woodpeckers, toucan and many more. A delight. Our cabin 0 was wonderful. We loved it. Nothing
- Rambler45 (10/5): Excellent location for seeing Quetzals - Cabins are ideally located to see the quetzals and other birds - cabins are very rustic and comfortable with plenty of blankets during cold nights and equipped with standup electric heaters we enjoyed our stay here despite a mixup at Miriam’s Restaurant who sent us to another mountain resort owned by her daughter despite knowing we were booked for Quetzal Valley Cabins which we felt was very unethical and un businesslike of Miriam and her daughter.
It was eventually sorted and we were met by Nelson who was a very nice and kind man showing us to our cabin and his son in law Jairo who is an excellent guide for spotting the quetzals. The property has lots of trails and a river flowing through it so it’s really best place in Quetzal Valley to see this beautiful bird. Nothing but needs to straighten out Miriam’s Restaurant about directing clients to the correct property.
- Danny (9/5): Chilly bird paradise - Location, location, location! We stayed in Cabin 2 which has a magnificent view of the valley. Bring your own food and drink since there is a weekl equipped kitchen. It is quite chilly at night so bring warm clothes. Once we remembered our Boy Scout training we got the fire going and it was quite comfortable. Jairo the maintenance man was very helpful and he provided us a Quetzal tour early, one morning. Well worth the $40 fee! We were not trained on how to get the hot water working and forgot to ask for instructions.
- Kristian (10/5): Magical location, wonderful hospitality! - Breathtaking, magical, we were in heaven! These rustic cabins are perched on the valley with spectacular views! We got a cabin with a kitchenette so we were able to brew coffee and make eggs in the morning. Through the management, we were able to book an early morning tour to see Quetzales in the wild, so beautiful and exhiliarating! Nelson, the care taker, along with Jairo, were so hospitable. My impression is that there are many high end accomodations in San Gerardo de Dota, so finding this place was truly grace from God. Jairo showed us around the property, which is a HUGE private nature preserve with a gorgeous waterfall... incredible location and magical place! Even if you don't stay there, I would recommend going on a hike on the property guided by Jairo, he will tell you about all the plants and local wildlife. Quetzales even visit the property by Cabin 3! Oh... and we had wifi! The heat is provided by space heaters, there is no heating system included. But we stayed plenty warm by 1) turning on the space heaters for a half hour before going to bed and 2) using the plentiful amount of blankets provided
- Ulla (7/5): Nice cabin in nature- at a birding hotspot - It was a beautiful cabin with a view of the mountains and valley from the balcony. Many birds around the cabin and at the grounds, which is like a small private reserve including 1 km of Rio Savegre. Well maintained paths brings you to small creeks and a waterfall. Steep at places.
Nice welcome by a man at the entrance who also explained where and how we might be able to see the quetzal and other birds. And we did! Female very close on the grounds.
The cabin has a kitchen with all necessities, a TV (connect to your phone, which we gave up on) a sofa and two old style nice rocking chairs and table with four chairs. Upstairs is the bedroom with a total of six beds.
Communication with the owner was good and he supplied maps of the area before our arrival as well as information on fishing. It really gets cold in the cabin, so bring wool clothes, socks and jackets. Extra blanket at night was necessary, and available. We didn’t manage to light up the stove since we didn’t know if the chimney was cleaned and open- but we didn’t contact the owner about this, as it was getting late at night, so not a complaint, just a point to be aware of.
The area is very steep - at 2600 m altitude - and I had good use of my hiking stick.
- Alex (8/5): basic cabins with amazing view of the valley.. recommended - we enjoyed the walks in the property and even saw a quetzal from very close.. it’s peaceful and relaxing place the mattress was quite old
- Crispin (9/5): Superb -
- Michael (8/5): Pleasant, beautiful remote feeling with amenities close by. View over the valley was spectacular. - Location is gorgeous. Cabins are rustic but comfortable, with plenty of extra blankets which are needed overnight. Access to cabins is a little steep but in keeping with the mountain environment. Don't expect hot water for showers. Unfortunately, our heater broke down overnight and the cabin was very cold as a result. Extra heaters, particularly in the larger cabins, would be helpful.
- Liesbeth (4/5): Primitive, too uncomfortable - The environment The heating system, cold shower,, and temperature was cold outside
paying cash, no receipt
