Guest Reviews
- Vickie (8/5): Loved it - quirky, fun and memorable! - The area, quirkiness of the house design, fabulous games/cinema room! We got an Uber to Saltburn-by-the-Sea and went to Whitby the day after. Loved it! No wardrobes or curtains, but we only stayed one night so wasn't a massive issue.
- Russ (9/5): - Plenty of space. Cinema room was a nice treat. Beds were good and the pplace was really well presented. Nice little outside space. Couldn't seem to get the arcade machine working. A little disappointing for my daughter. TV in the bathroom didn't seem to work with corrosion to battery terminals on the remote.
- Rebecca (7/5): Good location, lovely kitchen!! - The property was stunning, kitchen lovely!! No blinds in the bedrooms
Not as clean as id hoped
- Annie (10/5): Fun, relaxing and safe - Cleanness, set out, and easy owners Nothing.
- Samantha (7/5): Suitable for one night - Spacious, lovely decor. No privacy in the bedrooms due to the lack of blinds/curtains. This also means all the natural light comes through in the morning, not ideal. Overlooks neighbouring gardens so need to be careful when getting changed. No wardrobes or drawers for your clothes or belongings. Bins weren't emptied from the previous guests. Only 2 tea bags left in the container, no coffee or sugar. Lovely coffee machine provided but no pods to use it.
- Noor (10/5): Lovely weekend away in the countryside - Great, cosy house would definitely recommend for a group of friends! Very happy with all the facilities. No notes
- daryl (10/5): Exceptional - Spacious
Perfect in all ways Nothing
- Brad (10/5): -
- Julie (9/5): Perfect stay at n luxury - Decor, size, cleanliness and facilities are fantastic The central heating wasn’t working properly so was very cold in January
- Kelly (10/5): The Cleveland Retreat is an outstanding example of short stay rentals! Bravo - Attention to detail in every corner of the property was spot on! It’s obviously important to the owners that all their guests are welcomed and are comfortable. Only because we are nosey we looked under the stairs cupboard which was ‘unused space’ and that is just to be really picky!
- Emily (1/5): Terrible - No running water or heating? Decking has never been well maintained causing algae which caused me to fall and bruise my ribs. The hosts are ignoring me despite attempts to contact them regarding a refund breach of health and safety at its finest in this accommodation.
- Robert (10/5): -
- Macy (10/5): -
- Clare (5/5): There’s clearly been a lot of thought in how the property looks in photos, but that’s really as far as it goes. Let down - The location was convenient for visiting nearby family and the property is spacious. The host was responsive when we raised issues and provided the key safe code to the alternative property next door, which we were able to move to. The heating was not working, which was a major issue given the time of year. As we were only in this property for a couple of hours, I can’t comment on a full stay, but there were several things we noticed immediately —
•• No curtains or blinds anywhere, aside from the cinema room. One of the bedrooms has a large apex window overlooking neighbouring houses, meaning there is NO privacy in this room. The Velux windows also let in a lot of light from street lamps and early morning daylight, which may be an issue for light sleepers. Looking at previous reviews mentioning this, I’m unsure why this issue hasn’t been resolved yet as blinds/curtains CAN be made for velux and apex windows.
•• Nowhere to store clothes at all: No wardrobes, rails, drawers (aside from bedside drawers) and no coat hooks downstairs.
•• The property is advertised as having a coffee machine, but it is a pod machine with no pods provided, and there was only one teabag left in the tin.
•• One of the seats in the cinema room was broken and left on the floor. While the property was clean, it felt well-used, with scuff marks throughout, and overall came across as a bit scruffy and in need of some TLC. It felt more like a party house than a comfortable holiday let.
- Julie (5/5): - The kitchen was lovely and so was the house Just wasn't worth the money sorry. The house was in the middle of a housing estate. The house was freezing at night time and couldn't reset the heating. One of the seats in the cinema room was broken. When I tried to watch tv in the bathroom the television fell into the bath quite dangerous. A welcome pack for that price would have been nice and the window in our room didn't close properly so noise from outside during the night and early morning could be heard. The decking outside was very slippery and the cushions on the seats were left out so wet and couldn't use.
- Sarah (10/5): Amazing value - Stunning rooms, amazing decor and facilities, jaw dropping and food price. Nothing to not like
- Julie (6/5): - The cinema room is a great addition!
The decor is really nice.
The kitchen is very spacious. Instructions for the heating weren't obvious, so it was guesswork to warm the place up.
There were signs of previous guests, which hadnt been cleaned well.. handprints on the mirror, and sticky rings on the bench.
The water went off in the morning, after only 1 guest had showered.
One of the seats in the cinema room is broken.
- Georgina (3/5): Poor - The place itself is lovely We had no running water all night, up until 9am the next day. Messages the host since and nothing back. I feel this is completely unacceptable, breach health and safety and we should be compensated.
- Joel (8/5): -
- David (6/5): Felt we should have paid less for this alternative accommodation. - 3 days before our holiday we were told our place we booked which had a lot more than the alternative accommodation we stayed in but still paid the same price. Accommodation was poorly cleaned mirrors, windows etc. sauna door was sticking and wooden shaving on the floor. Only one towel per guest for 2 nights. Oven would only work with the cookware of the frying pan. The accommodation we booked which was next door had people staying there on the Saturday. Accommodation looked / felt is was still being being worked on, in finished in some areas.
- Wikira (8/5): -
- Dawn (10/5): Outstanding -
- Kerry (10/5): -
- Lorren (10/5): Lovely stay for teenage daughter’s birthday. - The Accomodation was clean and super comfortable. Exactly as advertised. Nothing. It was perfect.
- Ross (9/5): -
- Hannah (10/5): -
- Tina (2/5): no Hot Water or Heating, very disappointed. - the concept of this house was great. when opening the front door we were greated with 2 glass staircases. the cleaner must be using a dirty cloth as all i could see was smears on the glass.
walked into the cinema games room and there is a broken chair on the front row of the cinema chairs that just looked not welcoming to sit and relax on.
the games console is home made and I could not work out how to use it. it just felt very tacky and miss leading as i thought it was a proper games machine.
The dart board was fun but the darts really need replacing as the flights just feel out.
the kitchen just didnt feel clean. all the sides we smeared and just looked dirty. hardly any pans or kitchen ware in there so be aware of this if you want to cook
there is a floor to ceiling window downstairs with no curtains this is ok as it is very sheltered. however in the bedroom above this is the same. floor to ceiling window. it has no curtains an over looks houses and gardens. we did not use this room due to feeling like we it was not private and would let light in.
in the other bedroom there is a skylight yet again no curtains which let the light in again.
here is the biggy NO HOT WATER or HEATING. We spent ages on trying to get it to work and eventually tried ring the host and went to answer phone. they then messaged us saying that it should come on automatically. if we wanted we could have someone out to fix it. we said yes an then there was no contact from the host. so we spent the evening expecting so to come around so were relaxed. I personally wanted to go home but hubby convinced me to stay.
We left early as we wanted to get home where it warm and have a wash.
communication is shocking and they dont keep you informed to what is happening. even offer extra blankets to keep warm downstairs as it is a big room and does get chilly.
there is no welcome pack. so no instructions for the house. couldn't find how to get on the internet. no safety notices or fire extinguisher.
- Donna (1/5): We have a disappointing experience staying there , unfortunately - The location was great even though we struggled to park outside the property We didn’t have any hot water or heating the whole time we were there, the host did respond to are messages but kept saying the engineer had let them down or was coming back , I wished I’d read a lot more feedback on this property as I found that there been no heating or hot water since 2 August, I have a disability & health issues and found this very hard , the property looked lovely on booking.com site , there was no blinds or curtains in the main living area one of the bedrooms has a big window which was nice but there was no privacy it would be good to have curtains or blinds in there , there is also no wardrobes or cloths rail or chest of drawers in both bedrooms which ment you where having to live out of a suitcase or hang clothes on doors as there’s also no coat hooks in the downstairs, it looked like there had been someone in to clean but whoever did it must of used the greasy clothe they’d cleaned the cooker with as all main cabinets had greasy streaks on them and also the same with the windows, in the cinema room one of the front seats was broken , there is pots & a frying pan but didn’t use as looked dirty, there is a dishwasher so we could of put them in there but that should of been done before we arrived, the host did offer us a partial refund or a extra night, but we couldn’t wait to get home & have a warm shower, and the refund never appeared in our account, if these things were rectified it would of been a great experience staying there ,
- Paul (10/5): - Cleanliness
- Kirubakaran (8/5): -
- Ancuta (10/5): Great stay at Clevland Retreat - Self-check-in was super straightforward. The property was great and super cosy. Everything we great
- James (8/5): - The property it self was perfect for us family of 5 lots of space and the kids loved the cinema room. Not too far from Whitby We had no hot water when we’re there so tried to contact the host for some help with it and got no reply we sent texts and rang the number provided but got no response.
- Karolina (8/5): - Beautiful interior design No hot water.
The owner doesn't respond to messages or answer the phone.
- Read (10/5): -
- Isabella (5/5): Lovely but needs a bit of TLC - The location was good and the accommodation was stunning. The beds were comfortable There were no curtains which resulted in all my children going to bed late and waking up very early, from previous reviews I’m surprised the host hasn’t rectified this problem, the cinema room you couldn’t really use as a cinema room if you have Netflix because it was a locked profile. I messaged the host but the password didn’t work to unlock it, and didn’t want to disturb the host due to them having personal problems which is no issue at all but I asked for another contact and when I emailed the email I was given there was no response, the game machine doesn’t work, we could only get one game to work, the sponge that was on the sink in the kitchen had been used with food debris on from before we arrived, the accommodation was so nice but I think if the curtains and the cinema room situation it could be perfect!
- Stefan (10/5): Beautifully developed property and peaceful location - The property we stayed in had the games room / cinema. Parking was easy, just on the street outside and the property itself was beautifully done - you don't expect it from the outside. We booked it just for a little getaway with the kids being watched and 100% would go back. Not really something we didn't like - just something that would make it better would be having some comfy portable furniture for the cinema room - to sit closer. It's a MASSIVE TV, but still would have liked to sit closer on a settee (getting old clearly!)
- Lisa (9/5): Superb - This two bed house was great for our stay. My husband and I and our 6 Yr old son loved it. Very close to beaches and fully equipped. Our dog loved the little court yard. The kitchen is gorgeous and lovely views out the window. . The cinema room was an added bonus and my son has a new love of darts. My son didn't want to leave. My husband said there was a buzzing noise at night, I didn't hear it as I wear ear plus anyway due to his snoring lol. Not sure what it was.
As other reviews have mentioned the bedrooms would benefit from blinds or curtains. A few finishing touches and it would be perfect. For one night though it was fine for us.
- Callie (10/5): Exceptional -
- Helen (8/5): Great stay - Lots of room and well equipped holiday home. We are a family, with a daughter of 12, couple in our 30s and my mum who is 68 along with 2 dogs. This was perfect for us all. 30 minutes drive from Whitby
- Leeann (10/5): Exceptional -
- Dionne (10/5): Would certainly return was a beautiful place with beautiful surroundings and got a deal last minute - Stunning property well maintained
Well equipped
Comfy beds Personal preference but better toilet roll and more of it when maximum capacity are staying
No blind on skylight in bedroom or blinds in other room lovely feature but early awakening with the brightness in the rooms
- Darren (9/5): Really enjoyed our stay and would not hesitate to book again - Lovely place, very clean and tidy with shops and takeaways a short walk away and easy parking right outside the residence. The cinema room along with the arcade machine and dart board was great fun.
- Geoffrey (9/5): Superb - Location is lovely. Spacious feel and privacy.
Cinema was a nice idea.
Kitchen fully equipped. Could use a vacuum cleaner. Lack of curtains or blinds in the bedroom and lounge.
- Caroline (5/5): Could be so good but was a let down - Great idea and modern just lacking TLC and needs finishing and not very clean. Darts broken, cinema smelt of cigarettes, cigarette butts on decking, pans and his dirty and drawers dirty, things broken, dishwasher left full, very cold, hard to work anything jobs oven etc no instructions. No blinds in room so too bright and not private, wobbly buffets, broken bathroom handle. Just as if no one cares much about this place, it wasn’t very clean, there was fat in the hubs like it’d just been used and pans were dirty. Overpriced as wasn’t what we anticipated, shame as with a bit of TLC it could be perfect.
- Stephanie (7/5): Good - Great location, lots to do there, provided entertainment
- Ellie (10/5): It was for Valentine’s Day and the stay was brilliant wish we stayed longer - I liked that the whole building was for us. It was quite cold
- Libby (10/5): Exceptional -
- Harmieson (10/5): Exceptional -
- Beth (5/5): It's OK for the price I paid as it was on offer. - The cinema room was a great touch. Bedrooms, bedding and kitchen were clean but mirrors and windows were covered in streaks and hand prints, under the sofa bed had crumbs and crisps and in the cinema room there was half eaten sweets and wrappers all in the cup holders. There was no where to hang your clothes, luckily it was a short stay but if a long stay you would be living out of a suitcase for your stay. Also no bedside lamps so I was having to use my phone torch as the big light would of woke the baby, also there is no privacy as there is no blinds or curtains up at the window in the bedroom or living room and the pillows weren't the best so I would advise to bring your own as we all had a stiff neck! We also had no instructions or anything on how to connect to wifi (needed as there is 0 phone signal 🚫) or work the heating, luckily we found an instruction book and the router so managed to figure it out in the end. Overall it was very nicely decorated and the kitchen and cinema room was great and for the price I paid it was ok (it was on offer) but if you were paying full price it is definitely over priced for what you get.
There is a little shop over the road which sell all your essentials and a pub which is local too (the pub doesn't do food only drinks) there is also a local bus service right outside taking you into Middlesbrough, Guisborough, redcar, Saltburn and whitby so it's good for none drivers.
For now personally I wouldn't return but I will keep an eye out to see if any amenities are made and in the future if updated I would return as I say its not bad for a cheap stay of under £100 PN but anything more than that it could definitely be turned into something alot more than what it is.
- Kylie (9/5): Superb -
- Alexandra (10/5): Exceptional -
- Craddy (6/5): Pleasant -
- Victoria (4/5): Avoid! Hugely disappointing. Don’t be fooled by photos. - First impression but it was very disappointing On arrival the place was cold as no heating had been put on. There was no instructions how to use anything. We had to try and work out the heating. Brought food to cook as it had a big kitchen, but there was one large saucepan so couldn’t cook and no corkscrew. Messaged the owner who replied with limp replies and kept questioning was I sure things were missing?! Errr.. then Promised someone would call but they didn’t.
The arcade machine looked great but didn’t work. Someone already mentioned this in a review and I had asked the owner in a message. They said they would not be there to let us in but would be on the phone should we need help. Basically they lied.
TV in the bathroom looked great but didn’t work. Kitchen looked nice but couldn’t cook in it etc
Whole stay was cold so we had to drag the duvets down to sit and watch tv.
There was a weird fan/pump noise going all night when we went to bed and we couldn’t work out what it was So we turned all the electrics off at the trip switch so we could get to sleep.
It wasn’t very clean, someone had obviously had been using the kitchen before we got there. Would have been nice if they had put the heat on! 😅
- Sarah (10/5): Funky Entertainment Pad by the sea - It's even better than the pictures. This property has 2 bedrooms, with one featuring a floor to ceiling glass window with nice views. Its beautifully furnished.
Shops and public houses are close by. The property facilities are great and the decked outdoor space is a nice little sun trap.
The cinema room is spot on although u couldn't figure out how to use the arcade machine..instructions please. Rachel was lovely. Would definitely stay again. Thanks Rachel. There wasn't any cleaning equipment available to hoover or dustpan and brush. Not enough toilet roll for 6 adults although there's a shop across the road. No instructions found about bins or dishwasher use and the Internet ran out it was asking for payment literally as soon as we logged in. A welcome book would've been a good idea with the additional info and take aways etc.
- Will (8/5): Very good - Dart board was a nice touch Lack of curtains in bedrooms
- Ben (10/5): Absolutely stunning property would definitely recommend - Everything was perfect the location was ideal wasn’t too far from where I wanted to be was close to Whitby close enough to travel to Middlesbrough The full property was spotless the facilities was perfect cinema room was amazing
