Guest Reviews
- Ndumiso (10/5): Best Views In Zanzibar - The best views of the natural world in the whole of Zanzibar. I loved the creative and thought that went into the construction of the bungalow!
Its on top on a hill and views stretch into the distance.
A walking distance from Mthende Beach. The food would be better.
- Asta (9/5): Buvome apsupti nuostabių vaizdų ir šiltų žmonių - Puiki vieta su nuostabiu vaizdu, nuostabiu personalu.
- Abigail (7/5): Relaxing, peaceful environment with great staff. - A great location for a relaxing get away. Very special to watch the monkeys in the morning. Staff were wonderful and welcoming, they patiently helped us with our Swahili. Beautiful bird song. The dinner was delicious (but a little expensive). We got unlucky with a big power cut, out of everyone’s control and they were very helpful with providing lamps. It was the wet season after all but be aware it’s a possibility, my headtorch came in handy. The last stretch of road had some big puddles and pot holes, very manageable to navigate but good to note. Would still recommend!

- Adrian (8/5): Two days of peaceful relaxation in a unique location - This is a special place in a wonderful location. With gorgeous views over the beautiful baobab forest below, it is a privilege to stay in such a peaceful lodge. Zanzibar has a plentiful supply of typical beachfront accommodation, but for somewhere diferent and unique Monkey Mountain is fully recommended. It was marvellous to see the Bushbabies coming to the fruit laid out for them each night. Thank you Geoff, Suzi, Mwani and all of the staff for looking after us so well. As vegetarians we would have liked more choice in the menu, but the staff catered wonderfully for us.
- Helena (10/5): Authentic and wonderful lodge close to nature - Such a relaxing enviroment and amazing views! It was lovely to watch the sunrise from your own terrace and the sunset at the restaurant while enjoying a great meal. The atmosphere at the lodge felt authentic and very cozy.
The staff was kind and especially Suzy was great thanks to her good english and warm personality.
This lodge is definitely unique and really stands out from typical resorts! A big recommendation by two people who have seen a lot of accommodations from all around the world. We liked everything.
- Sebastien (10/5): Un lodge exceptionnel !
petite plage agréable 15 mn a pied
- Emma Katarina Lovisa (8/5): Spectacular view and nice surroundings - Spectacular views, nice bungalow and excellent breakfast! We were unlucky with power outages and therefore had a very hot bungalow. Some communication issues with the staff.
- Gerrit (10/5): Wonderful relaxing bush experience
No I'm - Beautifully built rustic lodge in the middle of a green bush forest with many majestic baobab trees. The monkeys are a little shy but very active in the late afternoon, visiting with us on the main terrace... Absolutely non threatening, just interested. We were lucky enough to see a bush baby who had come to find its dinner just as we were talking about our precious bush baby we had raised ourselves.... Such a wonderful surprise. The bar was well stocked and the food stunning.... Excellent chef who understands seafood. Overall we loved our 2 nights at monkey mountain.... Exactly what we were hoping for. There is nothing to dislike at all
- Stefanie (10/5): - Everything
- Filip (10/5): An unforgettable stay! - The staff at Monkey Mountain Lodge were incredibly kind and welcoming, we’ve never felt so well taken care of. The place itself is absolutely beautiful and will stay in our memories forever. The bungalows are clean, cozy, and offer amazing views with baobab trees. Every morning we were visited by adorable blue monkeys, which made the stay even more special! The breakfasts were also delicious. Highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Zanzibar!
Niente
- Victor (9/5): - Unieke lodge met prachtig uitzicht, gedienstig personeel.
Apen!
- Pamela (9/5): -
- Sara (10/5): -
- Doa (10/5): -
- Max (10/5): It was wonderfull - the atmosphere was great and the hosts were friendly and caring! -
- Florian (10/5): Exceptional -
- Avinash (10/5): Definitely worth visiting a night or two - Excellent staff and owner. Very sweet. Excellent service. Excellent views from restaurant/bar and rooms. Only two minute drive to the beach. Food was great too. Nothing
- Meelis (10/5): Exceptional - Monkey Mountain Lodge has great location with stunning views over the green forest and blue ocean. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Food is delicious. Mattress and pillows are very comfortable and better than in many hotels. And beautiful red colobus monkeys added the final pitch to our stay.
- Ivana (10/5): Peace of paradise - I have been to many accommodations in Zanzibar, but this one was truly the most special experience for me. The peace and positive vibes I experienced there brought back 5 years of my life. The house is in a wonderful location, surrounded by dense vegetation, so you will feel a healing peace there during your entire stay. The bungalows are spacious and perfectly clean, the beds are large and comfortable, the view is stunning. The food deserves a Michelin star, the offer is varied, the ingredients are fresh every day, the portions are very generous, certainly above the price. The owner and all the staff are very accommodating, kind and ready to dedicate themselves to each guest to make them feel at home. My special thanks go to the hostess Suzy
, whose helpfulness and kindness go beyond the limit and who made our stay even more beautiful. If you are planning to visit Zanzibar, do not make the mistake of not visiting this special piece of paradise. Thank you all, even though we left, a piece of my heart remained there 💓
- Maria (9/5): Impressive place - Great place to stay if you are looking for an escape from overcrowded places. Here you will feel much closer to nature , overlooking the magnificent forest, full of animals and insects . It’s very quiet but also full of sounds that nature produces. I was really impressed!
Room is good, has everything you need, very nice design with dark wood. Food is very delicious , especially the mango jam!
Keep in mind, you stay up on the hill, closest beach is around 15-20 min walk. There is no beach where you can stay all day under umbrella, you can swim when the tide is high, or walk when it’s low. The beach here is very picturesque, but different from other places on the island. Few places where you can eat, food is delicious, but take torchlight with you when you walk in the evening as no street light . Mosquitos present as it’s in the forest, so use repellent.
Some issues with internet and power outage.
For some all above might be negative, but for me these were just minor things.
- Tiina (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful green gem with superb views. Excellent host and staff. Great food.
- Umi (10/5): If you think should you go to Mtende or no - don’t miss the opportunity and take an advantage while you are on the islan - I will always keep this place in my heart. 3 nights here released 2 years of stress on my shoulders. Serenity, astonishing views, jungles, animals, sunrises, sunsets, amazing food. The bungalow is spacious, spotlessly clean, brand new, where luxury meets rustic and bonds you with nature. Watching monkeys playing on baobab branches from the terrace of our bungalow was just mind-blowing. Mtende beach is like from sci-fi movies, just unbelievable, one of the most memorable and remarkable places I’ve visited on this planet. All this is possible thanks to the hospitality of Jeff and Suzi, who went above and beyond to provide the best experience of our stay in Zanzibar. We stayed on 6 beaches in Zanzibar, 9 accommodations, and this was the best place. That I ran out of time to stay longer as we headed off on safari. I really envy staff members who stay there every day and witness all this beauty.
- Caterina (6/5): Beautiful intimate lodge over looking the forest and Mtende - The lodge is located in a magnificent position on a high rock overlooking the surrounding forest and Mtende beach that is a 500 m walking.
The rooms are rustic and large, well for a family with a beautiful balcony with comfortable lounge beds to watch the nature and monkeys that sometimes come up close.
The village nearby is a magical experience to wonder up to and meet the locals and admire the big baobab trees.
Susie is super sweet and tried to do all she could to make our stay comfortable. Unfortunately the area has problems with electricity. It cuts of constantly and for many hours in a row.
This means no light in the room, no ventilator, now water power for a shower and no WiFi that in any case is not available in the room.
Also many things on the menu where not available or finished leaving a small choice.
All this would have been ok if the price of the hotel was much lower but as it had European prices but doesn’t provide the basics for it, we where disappointed.
It’s a shame because the place has incredible potential and I hope the management will buy a generator like maybe other place have done to provide electricity.
- Tom (10/5): Exceptional -
- Tom (10/5): Magical place wit stunning views - The staff really want the extra mile in terms of organizing your activities for us, making sure that we feel comfortable and welcome. This is the best place on Zanzibar with magnificent views of the lush, tropical jungle overlooking baobab trees, and with amazing sounds of birds, monkeys, and other wildlife you will not find a better experience on Zanzibar
- Hajir (9/5): Definitely one of the best place to stay in Mtende! - The room is spacious and is very beautifull with a nice bathroom. Really comfortable bed and the view of the jungle will make you wanna stay forever! Sometimes beautifull birds fly by and the monkeys will appear every now and then in the sceenery. It is also worth to mention that it is quite here and you will mostly only hear the sound of the wind, birds and sometiemes the monkeys.
- Fanny (10/5): Best lodge for our Zanzibar trip - The breakfast was excellent. They are the masters of fresh fruit juice and their crepes are delicious.
The location is perfect for nature lovers, as you are surrounded by green bushes, baobab, monkeys and a beautiful view of the sea. You are not far from great diving spots (DiveTime Zanzibar Dive Center is wonderful) and Jozani forest. Ask for Suleiman to drive you around. Perhaps more vegetarian and swahili options on the menu, but that's just me.
- Yaping(susan) (9/5): Retreating and healing place in the middle of the nature - The idea of the hotel:
It was amazing as it's located in the middle of a small forest, what I liked the most was the room was limited so I got all the attention and needs filled from all the staff members; As well met the son of the owner Jordan and spent an amazing day with him in the water for snorkelling, seen the beautiful fishes, but be careful with sea arches;
Breakfast:
There was a set menu and very much value for money, they prepare when you are ready, so everything is hot and fresh
Monkeys:
I saw monkeys on the Baobao tree first day when I checked in, and more amazingly saw the monkeys right next to my room playing in the morning, was lucky that saw the monkeys on my balcony, their amazing view and an amazing way to wake up like this, kind of healing place. Wifi was a challenge, but I think the owner is working on it
- John (10/5): Exceptional -
- Stefania (10/5): Exceptional - Monkey mountain lodge is a real escape from the noisy beaches and the sleepless nights of the nearby villages, offering an authentic experience all immersed in a lavish green landscape.right on the ocean.
Jeff and Suzie are lovely and attentive hosts and will guarantee you a welcome and peaceful stay.
