It was my first time in Mafia Island and I stayed for four nights. Considering the staff’s professionalism and proactiveness (including Masut), as well as the cleanliness and tasteful design of the facilities, the overall standard was very high and excellent value for the price.

Dalla gentilezza e disponibilità del personale, la comodità e cura delle stanze, la bontà dei pasti e colazione (sempre con frutta freschissima). La posizione è ideale per visitare Chole e d’intorni, per fare passeggiate lungo la spiaggia e provare i ristorantini vicini. Le gite per vedere gli squali balena sono dall’altra parte dell’isola, ma raggiungibili in 15-20 minuti di tuktuk o macchina.

- GdG (10/5): - Basecamp Eco Lodge is perfectly situated at the beautiful white sand beach of Utende in the middle of a protected marine park. No mass tourism yet on Mafia therefore a tranquil place to fully relax and enjoy the high level of comfort and luxury that Basecamp offers with beautiful new boutique rooms in the middle of an authentic African experience in the village next to it. As the beautiful Chole bay and marine park are just in front of the lodge it is very easy to take one of the many tours.. You can easily spend 1-2 weeks without being bored as Mafia island has much experiences to offer.. There are a few diving schools in Utende at walking distance. Also a few small Swahili restaurants along the coast. The Basecamp restaurant also served a diverse and tasty menu which changes every day. The staff of Basecamp is amazing - they really make you feel at home and take care of everything you might need. Highly recommended! Nothing worth mentioning
- Gabi (9/5): - A beautiful resort right by the sea. We found it offered the perfect blend of luxury, nature and a relaxed atmosphere. Just the ticket for unwinding and relaxing. We particularly enjoyed breakfast every day in the lovely open-air restaurant. The seaside bar is also a great spot for a relaxed get-together. The pool is perfect for all ages too! I love the sun loungers and parasols, which, like so many other things here, are made from natural materials.

The pool is huge and always clean, there are two bars and a restaurant with a good menu. But the most remarkable thing is the staff, from reception to every waiter/waitress, they are so kind and extremely helpful. We didn’t want to leave!

Diese Info steht weder bei Booking.com noch auf der Hotelwebseite! - Preisleistung stimmt beim Abendessen nicht (kleine Portionen, lieblos angerichtet) Alternative Empfehlung: 2 lokale Restaurants am Strand (lecker, frischer & günstiger) - Touren über das Hotel zu buchen war leider umständlicher & teuerer als bei den localen Anbietern (Hotel hatte auch nach einer Woche die Touren-Preisliste/Angebote noch nicht gefunden) - Hatten Zimmer mit Kühlschrank, Wasserkocher & Internet gebucht - jedoch nicht erhalten, stattdessen Schimmel im Zimmer. Nach Reklamation erhielten wir an Tag 2 dann glücklicherweise ein renoviertes Zimmer was alles gebuchte enthielt.

- Victoria (7/5): Experiencia con luces y sombras en un entorno privilegiado - Un detalle que suma mucho es el personal de seguridad masái, que le da un aire simpático y exótico al lugar, aportando un toque cultural auténtico a la experiencia. La ubicación es excelente, justo en la misma playa de Utende y en el punto desde donde salen las excursiones para hacer snorkel y visitar Chole Island. Es muy práctico si quieres explorar el parque marino y moverte fácilmente en barco. Al principio fue bastante decepcionante debido a la habitación estándar que nos asignaron inicialmente. Estas habitaciones necesitan una renovación urgente. Todo lo metálico estaba oxidado, la puerta de la terraza no cerraba correctamente y, lo peor de todo, la humedad en las paredes era evidente. El olor a humedad era muy desagradable y nada saludable. Además, la cisterna del baño dejó de funcionar en dos ocasiones. Después de la segunda vez, finalmente nos cambiaron a una habitación superior. Las habitaciones del lado derecho con vistas al mar son completamente distintas: más nuevas, mejor cuidadas y realmente merecen la pena. La diferencia respecto a las estándar es enorme. Mi recomendación es clara: no reservéis las habitaciones estándar, la experiencia puede ser muy mala. Si vais, elegid directamente una superior con vistas al mar. El desayuno está bastante bien, pero la comida o la cena dejan bastante que desear.

- Muriel (10/5): BASECAMP, le paradis des plongeurs - Très bel hôtel en bordure de plage avec une chambre très spacieuse avec vue mer, un très bon restaurant qui propose tous les jours un menu différent midi et soir servi par du personnel très souriant et attentionné. Piscine naturel et salon de massage au prix imbattable de 20 USD l’heure. Le tout dans une atmosphère très calme et sécurisé grâce au Massaï qui discrètement sont présents. Cerise sur le gâteau, un joli cadeau en quittant l’hôtel avec des produits locaux et surtout un bracelet personnalisé.

- Fabio (10/5): Recommended! - Our stay was absolutely wonderful and the staff was incredibly helpful and friendly from the moment we arrived. The room was very spacious and equipped with all the necessary amenities in a perfect position within the structure. We loved the location of the hotel because it is so close to the beach and makes everything very convenient. The food was delicious and offered vegetarian options while the staff was always available to find vegan solutions for us. One of the best parts was the collaboration with the local diving center because they come directly to the hotel to organize trips and dives for the next day. This means you do not have to go anywhere to plan your activities in the evening. The massages were also excellent and provided a great way to relax during the day. Overall there is a perfect holiday vibe at this place and we enjoyed every single minute of our vacation. Nothing, everything was great.

La tassa di soggiorno all'interno del Parco Marino, che viene incassata dal Parco, non da Basecamp, incide tuttavia in modo esagerato sul costo finale del soggiorno. Circa 25 €/persona al giorno!

The new King or family rooms are fabulous and big and have wonderful views. The beach bar is super and in best location on the beach. The Standard rooms are very small and outdated and some don’t have anywhere to hang clothes but the hotel kindly managed to sort out better rooms for our group.

- Dylan (10/5): - Basecamp is a beautiful place to stay on Mafia Island! The property is so stunning with views of the ocean and access to the beach. Our stay was very comfortable with lovely beds and bedding, our room was very clean and recently updated. The staff were all extremely welcoming and tended to our every need. We were greeted with a coconut to drink out of upon arrival as well as some local fruits. The breakfast was great with freshly made eggs however you like. The lunches and dinners were also really tasty. There is a bar at the pool, beach and restaurant which was convenient. The pool has a nice view of the ocean as well. The shuttle service from the airport was timely and convenient. We saw whale sharks snorkeling! We had our laundry done and folded, which was great. Our room was upgraded free of charge as there was availability, which was such a nice surprise as it has never happened to us before. Overall an amazing stay at a beautiful hidden gem, book it!! Nothing :)

Location in the marine park makes for the most beautiful scenery, with lots of space, beautiful grounds, and quiet beach. - alethoaletho (10/5): - Wunderschöne Tage auf Mafia Island und im Badecamp Nach ein paar Tagen Safari, sind wir jetzt im Basecamp (Utende, Mafia Island) um die fantastische Unterwasserwelt in Mafia kennenzulernen. Gleich die Begrüßung durch die Mitarbeiter des Hotels war unglaublich herzlich ❤️. Das Hotel liegt schön am Strand, wo es auch eine tolle hoteleigene Beachbar gibt, an der wir immer gerne unseren Tag ausklingen lassen. Wir haben ein sehr schönes (neues) Zimmer mit wunderschöner Aussicht auf den Strand/Meer. Das Frühstück ist einfach toll. Die frischen Früchte schmecken so gut, es gibt jeden Tag frische Smoothies, frisch zubereitete Eierspeisen, selbst gemachte Peanut Butter - kurzum - es ist perfekt. Auch das Abendessen um 25,00 Doller mit Vor,- Haupt- und Nachspeise ist zu 100% empfehlenswert. Wir haben auch das Laundry Service genutzt. Auch das hat super funktioniert. Die gesamte Anlage ist wunderschön. Besonders hervorheben möchten wir die unbeschreiblich freundlichen Mitarbeiter im Hotel. Wir reisen viel - die Freundlichkeit im Basecamp übertrifft aber so gut wie alles, was wir bisher erlebt haben.... Mafia Island ist ein absolut relaxter Ort, wo man an der ersten Minute entschleunigt....Pole, Pole... Wir haben einige Tage im nahe gelegenen "Dive - Planet" getaucht. Das Tauchen war einfach spitze und auch der Ausflug nach Mange Island wird uns unvergesslich bleiben. Tolle Crew, tolle Tauchplätze.... An unserem vorletzten Tag haben wir dann noch einen "Whaleshark" (Walhai) Ausflug gemacht und haben mehrere dieser sanften und freundlichen Riesen getroffen....solche Begegnungen sind einfach magisch... Herzlichen Dank an das Basecamp - Ihr habt erheblich dazu beigetragen, dass wir hier so eine wunderschöne Zeit hatten....wir kommen wieder... Aletho

- Neha-Tamara (10/5): Perfection all round - I absolutely loved my stay at Basecamp and can’t wait to return. The hotel is beautiful and the service of the staff exceptional. They can’t do enough to make guests feel comfortable and accommodated for. The rooms are stunning, overlooking the beach and the pool and restaurant areas are a great place to relax. For divers there’s a dive shop within a minute’s walk and for non divers alternative excursions from the hotel. A wonderful place to stay for some quiet time on a white sand beach.

The area was quiet and the balcony was overlooking the sea. We felt like we were in paradise!! They made a big effort to make it eco friendly, which we loved. We will definitely go back! Thank you to all the staff for an unforgettable experience The air conditioning in the room took a while to cool the room down. We had to get water from the main area, maybe it would be worth it to give more bottles or to put another fountain closer to the accommodation

The light switches give problems. The dead grass in front of room needs attention, and lacks the feel of a kept garden, as this is the view to the sea quite a way away from the rooms.

- Manuel (5/5): Nice facilities but massively overpriced. - Next to the Beach, nice Pool, new Rooms very nice. The restaurant offers very good Breakfast with the friendliest breakfast staff! Except for the receptionists who only do interview-styled small talks every time you pass them, every staff is absolutely friendly and helpful. Friendly manager. Everything is massively overpriced considering $280 per night 2pax with breakfast only: - WiFi only in the dining area. - They offer you a Taxi from and to the airport for $25 but you‘ll usually get a car for $12 and a Tuktuk for $6. - The Beach was dirty (a lot of waste) and only few beachchairs. - You have to get filtered water every day yourself at the reception. - The initial room didn’t offer a mosquito net they had to ask the manager to give us a room with a mosquito net and we were very lucky to get one of the new rooms with bednets. - In the description it is highlighted that the room we booked has a infinity pool as a highlight - this is only a scam there was no room with an infinity pool ;-) - We had to change the newly built room after 2 nights beacause of a water leakage. After returning from a day trip they offered us 15 minutes to relax before we had to change the room and because we were tired and asked for a short recovery time they just came themselves and took all our belongings to the new room and deposited them anywhere in the new room so we took some time to find all our belongings in the new room. - Dinner is a scam: we got a soup and cold rice with a few vegetables for $25 which is a complete scam considering being in a country where you‘ll usually get warm rice with beans and vegetables for $1. - You pay $23 extra because you stay in the marine park area. We knew that but still it is not well highlighted in the hotel description. (Aside there are many fishermen within the protected marine park area).

- Mohamed (8/5): A serene place to visit which is on the beach with easy access to sports and boating facilities. - The location is excellent. The rooms were old but comfortable. Internet available in common areas. Beautiful beach bar recently built? Caters to individual food taste. Still undergoing renovation. New rooms should be better. No WiFi in the rooms. No TV in the rooms. The property is in the Marine zone hence have to pay $23.95 per person per day to the Marine conservation authority- not the hotel.
- Julian (9/5): Unique and memories that will stay with me forever. - The friendliness and helpfulness of the staff at all levels was exceptional. People went out of their way to ensure everything was ok and helped solve some of my more challenging logistics challenges eg. find and un-named and not in the beaten track beach I’d visited 32 years previously. The dinner in the restaurant was excellent. Exceptional value for money, tasty and well cooked. Portions were very plentiful and the menu flexible and varied. Tuna steak and Veggie pasta were epic. The view from the room and the main lodge is unique, stunning across the water to the isle of Chole and with wonderful sunrises. I was lucky enough to meet the new owners. They were excellent fun, very welcoming and kind enough to share their vision and entrepreneurial story. I found the eco goals, ethos and joinery very inspiring and can see how the new development work they are doing such as the stunning new pool (that I tried), new accommodation units and service amendments will make this a unique and great place to stay. All of this is situated inside the marine park and near Untendi beach with the excellent Mafia Island Diving and ferry to Chole a 2 minute walk away. Truly unique. I had a brilliant time. The old stock of rooms are a bit tired. Clean and comfortable and represent good value for money but tired. There is a rolling programme of new units being built that I am sure will be a big improvement and available in summer 2024. Found mattress too hard at the start but this was quickly changed. No dedicated exercise space so used area by the pool. New facilities will address this.
- Anne (10/5): Perfect get away to re-energize and enjoy all the ocean and Tanzania has to offer. - Beautiful resort. The location is amazing, my room even had ocean view. The food is fantastic, every day was a celebration and surprise. Which for me as a vegan is quite hard to find usually, even in Europe. Let's not forget about the staff. Everyone is super friendly and helpful. It's super rare to find such attentive staff. I will be back for sure.
