Guest Reviews
- Rebekka (7/5): Quiet stay - The location is right next to the beach, the sunset was beautiful!
It was also very easy to catch a bus on the main road.
Breakfast was included and they give plentiful.
Everyone was very welcoming and helpful. :) The bathroom could use a little love.
The bangalows have traditional roofs so naturally dirt will fall through regularly. Nothing to do here but a broom would have been nice so that guests can get rid of that.
Also lots of bugs but didn’t bother me.
- Tegan (4/5): The staff are lovely. We were booked to stay here for 5 nights but only ended up staying one night because of the unclea - The beach is beautiful! Pillows need replacing as they are covered with black mould. There were also bugs falling from the ceiling and the second bed in the room didn’t have a bug net. Slept with ants crawling up my legs while sleeping.
- Sebastian (9/5): - Good location within walking distance of the airport. There are frequent minibuses too. Friendly staff. Nicely located on the beach in a quiet location. Great breakfast. I recommend to stay there. Vanuatu is a poor country. You can't expect the highest standards for that price. Expect frequent animal visitors.

- Giuseppe (9/5): - Personale accogliente e super disponibile. Struttura vicina al mare e all'aeroporto. Pasti semplici ma molto buoni. Non essendoci alcun supermercato nelle vicinanze, forse potrebbero ampliare il menú rendendo disponibili anche panini o spuntini
- Bettina (10/5): -
- Juan (10/5): We absolutely loved our stay at Alofa. Dion was exceptional. He invited us to participate in a ceremony his family and v - Beautiful hut, gardens and a minute walk to the beach. It is walking distance to the market where you can find truly organic and locally grown vegetables and try Vanuatu’s national dish Laplap

- Zoe (7/5): Cute spot by the inner reef, with nice views and friendly staff. - Cute little spot by the water!
Quaint bungalow with bug nets and bathroom.
Staff were friendly and helpful with organising tours and travel - also just nice to generally chat too.
Nice spot to unwind. There were constructions happening in front of our bungalow which were noisey + there is a school next door, so during the day it isn’t quiet - but certainly not the end of the world!
Without a car you can be isolated - so make sure to ask the staff to help you out.
There is no shops around, so stock up on essentials before you rock up!
- Guest (8/5): Had a lovely bungalow stay! - Breakfast was included and was lovely! They have a rotating menu board thing so they changed that basically every day, a few options per meal time. The staff helped us book our tours easily and were very friendly. The location is on the beach where there were some lovely rock pools. They have some cats and dogs, one of the cats was particularly friendly and would sit on your lap in the dining area. There was a day where we tried to order dinner earlier in the day as they requested but they weren’t there and then we didn’t see them again until about 7 pm where we were told we should have ordered earlier.. but they apologised for the misunderstanding and we still got dinner. Wifi only worked in the dining area when they put it out/ when you ask for it. But that wasn’t a big problem. They could probably do with some new pillows.

- patrick (5/5): - It was in front of the ocean
Lovely kittens to Play with Try to be independant with transport, food and activities.
Food is very simple and overpriced. You can get much better at big resorts for similar prices, or go to lekanel town, there are fruit markets there and you will pay 4 times less for much better food. Transportation was overpriced. Just walk to the main road and you will pay 3 times less. We had a situation with activities because of poor organisation. We felt like we were responsable for their poor organisation!
The rooms were rundown with lots of insects, Lizard and mouse defecation.
Pillows were stained and the room was very humid.
- Zeana (10/5): Felt like home - wonderful family taking care of the property and the guests. I am ready to go back. - Beautiful location and beautiful garden and flowers.
- Werner&Siyarat (9/5): - I like it there. It was very quiet, beachfront and close to the airport.👍 Nothing, all good👍
- Milan (9/5): Relaxing and Unexpectedly Nice - The property is in a beautiful position, alongside gorgeous rock pools and stretches of ocean. The rooms were great, the food was yum, the water was hot, and the property is well maintained, with gorgeous greenery. Also cute cats. Theres a swimming beach a couple minute walk to the left of the rockpools if you want to dip, but overall, impressed! The wifi is only limited to the reception, and it is rather slow, however it’s great if you want to be off your devices and relax in nature!
- Kaisu (5/5): Passable - Location was great and we really enjoyed the company of the resorts' cats. Room was dirty and also moldy. A lot of cockroaches, bugs and lizards - and a lot of their poo as well in the rooms.
- Jackson (10/5): Excellent location and value, hosts are super friendly and ensured we enjoyed Tanna - Amazing staff, accommodation was comfortable and they also prep meals and help plan tour activities. We had a few struggles during our stay but the hosts were always quick to resolve any complications. I would highly recommend Alofa and would happily stay here again, Tanna is very remote yet the value for this place was exceptional 10/10 Can't complain :)
- Jamaisvu (9/5): Great! - The location is great, the family was really nice and welcoming. The bungalow was beautiful with a comfortable bed and a small terrace. You can reach the beach in a couple of minutes. Dinner is limited, but affordable and delicious - the owner prepared it for me after hours as I got back from my tour later. Breakfast was also nice, you can additionally order Tanna coffee. -
- Vanessa (6/5): Basic, but clean beachside cottage - Relatively close to the airport. Beachside property with amazing tropical fish swimming in the coral reef Vodaphone does not work here.
- Gabriela (10/5): Beautiful stay at Alofa - I had a lovely stay at Alofa. The property was very well-maintained with a beautiful garden directly on the beach. The staff were kind and helpful, food was excellent, and it was such a quiet, peaceful location. Thank you Alofa! Lots of bugs in the room, but the room has bug nets for the bed. No shops or restaurants within walking distance but they cook meals on site.
- Theresa (10/5): A little gem - Little gem, the host John and Veronica were great and hospitable. The bungalows are very neat and clean with hot water and a fan. Veronica does a lovely job of presenting breakfast nicely and putting flowers around the rooms. The gardens are immaculate! The village is a short walk away along the beach and very interesting to visit. The beach in front is rocky but there are little pools you can swim in.
A great stay! Nothing
- Rufang (9/5): Superb - Excellent
- Annie (7/5): Not terrible - The breakfast is great, the beach is right in front, use of snorkel gear is free and someone is always on site. They can arrange taxis and get direct pricing from the locals themselves. It's very safe, and overall, a nice family set up. A rat haunted my first room, and the second was filled with lizard droppings, termite-eaten wood shedding everywhere and in the communal space, make sure to have insect repellant all the time. The walk to and from there to the main road is ridiculously muddy, there are no signs to get in from the main road, and waves are huge/unpleasant to relax in the water on the entire coastline.
- Van (7/5): I travel to Tanna on a regular basis and have made The Alofa our regular place to stay. -
- María (10/5): Just chill and enjoy - We enjoyed the location (going to the beach, watching local’s life, visiting the school next door). But the best were John and Veronique that were super friendly. They also helped us arrange transportation to the volcano. The food options are limited but always great! Veronique really makes it look great too. The breakfast was plenty and yummy. And we enjoyed the bonfire at night. The room might welcome a little maintenance (door and shower curtain) but overall we were satisfied!
It might be a good idea to add something to put or hang clothes.
- Jason (10/5): exceptional - We had the most wonderful time with John, Véronique, Becky and John-Marc. They went out of their way to make it such a special holiday for us.
My husband and I went there for one week and every day we discovered more of the island, the people and how they live. John can arrange every activity you want and we could decide that spontaneously in the morning. We went to the volcanoe, to the Yakel tribe, to a local english school, to the village nearby, to the local market and even cooked Simboro and Laplap with them. John also accompanied us on every trip and gave us additional informations and he even speaks the language clik, so he could also communicate with the people of the Yakel tribe. Every evening, after dinner, John made a fire at the nearby fireplace to enjoy the rest of the evening.
When you want to see the real Tanna you definitely have to go to this place. nothing it was exceptional
- Seamus (10/5): Exceptional - My stay at Alofa was amazing! John helped organise everything while I was there, and showed me how to make traditional food and also invited me to a traditional ceremony at the nakamal (meeting place). It was a wonderful authentic experience of Tanna, highly recommend++
- Alberto (9/5): Superb -
- Paul (6/5): Experience the real Tanna away from the upscale resorts - Alofa, as its name suggests, is located on the beach and is near local villages. The accommodation is basic, but has its own special charm. Our local hosts, Glen and his sister, were very kind and helpful. While the menu options were limited, Glen's fried chicken and chips were quite decent. We really enjoyed swimming at the local beach where the locals swim. More luxurious resorts offer more comfort, but we felt we experienced the real Tanna staying at Alofa. Our family group initially stayed in bungalows 2 and 3. Bungalow 2: On our first night my wife was awoken by a rat dragging her reading glasses across the floor; later the same evening the rat was found making off with a packet of biscuits. My wife then joined our children in Bungalow 3. We subsequently discovered that rat was living inside the wall lining. Due to the rat issue, my wife and I eventually moved to Bungalow 4 when it became available - but not after the rat had eaten holes through my shorts as I had (foolishly) left a biscuit wrapper in my pockets. The cats that jump on the table during meal times were quite annoying - apparently, they are there to keep the rats out of the kitchen, which makes sense.
- Claudia (9/5): Superb -
- Kate (7/5): Kind staff but needs a few improvements - Wonderful setting on a beautiful beach.
Not far from airport and most tours/trips are
Reasonably accessible. The staff I met, Becky & her cousin, were kind and helpful Communication was not good/confusing. The tours/transfers pricing was particularly unclear and I ended up paying more than I expected to because staff and the guide were breaking it down differently eg it’s x price for the journey but x price for entry, and then other add-ons I didn’t know about :/ would be really helpful to be clearer
About this. The room also wasn’t in a good state - sheets did not appear clean and dead insects around the floors etc
- Aislinn (8/5): Lovely stay and staff - Becky and Glen were absolutely lovely, so helpful when we had an issue as soon as we arrived and great throughout the stay!
The bungalows were right by the beach, spacious and had private bathrooms which was a luxury too! Definitely good value for money and really enjoyed! Breakfast was also included, simple but tasty and filling. The sea was a bit difficult to get into at lower tide due to the coral but Glen directed us to deeper spot which was better. Dinner could have been more varied but was still good.
- Gabby (6/5): Alofa Bungalows by - The price and location. Right on beach and easy 15 minutes to town.(Lenakel)
Good size bungalows, nice beach out the front. The new owners are still finding their feet. Check-in was slow, as was the serving of meals in the restaurant.
- Florian (8/5): Very good - The location is very beautiful! Just sitting behind a beautiful beach where you will find no other tourists! Just other friendly locals! 😊 Food was fairly cheap and very good. The owners are super nice and will help you out as best as they can! It’s a little bit pricey for a basic accomodation. But still a very good experience
- Camille (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kai (7/5): Good place to stay, only bad first impression - The people are friendly. Food from the kitchen quite delicious but only limited choice. The beach is at the front. The location is remote but one can still go to the town by bus or taxi. The cats are cute. We believe that we have asked for the airport pickup arrangement. However, when we arrived there is nobody picking us up. There are other guests arrived on the same flight, that is, both of us expected the pickup but in vain. We hired taxi from the airport by ourselves. When we arrived the bungalow, it takes like 30 minutes before we can have our room. That was not a pleasant first impression for an accommodation.
- Camille (10/5): Very helpful staff. Very clean and comfortable accommodations. - So many friendly locals around to meet .
Beautiful coral shore to explore.
- Francois (9/5): Superb -
- Johannes (10/5): Feel the real Vanuatu - Really great place to stay on Tanna, our host John was one of the friendliest persons I’ve ever met. He really welcomed us with open arms and organised everything we wanted to do on the island for us. He showed us the real original Vanuatu 10/10
- Rui (9/5): Superb -
- Andiswa (8/5): I had a wonderful time at Alofa! The staff were superb and the location is close to the beach! - The staff were amazingly responsive to queries I had before arrival and continued to be super friendly during the stay. They organised travel logistics for activities and are well informed. Alofa is right at the beach and close to town! Nothing much I did not like. It would have been great to have more cold beers in the fridge, I missed eggs at breakfast and to get to the volcano is quite a drive. Though I enjoyed the drive there as I was able to see more of the island.
- Gilbert (8/5): Very good -
- Stella (7/5): We had a comfortable stay - It’s close proximity to the beach ; the food and the staff If you take the bus it’s a bit of a walk to the main road but you can always ask them to call the bus to pass thru the property by the beach side
- Gilbert (8/5): Flight Cancelation Booking - Friendly staff Location from the main road and town centre, but it's on a seashore
- Jutta (10/5): I LOVED staying here and would love to return. Fantastic hosts - I LOVED staying here and didn't want to leave. Veronique and Jean-Marc are really friendly and worked hard to make my stay really enjoyable. The breakfast is included and all food was really delicious. The gardens are beautiful and the setting by the beach simply wonderful. There is free wi-fi. It was a wonderful place to relax. You can get there by bus from the airport if you don't have much luggage but the position of the bungalows is slightly wrong on google maps. No complaints, everything was great.
- Ivan (10/5): Exceptional - Great location. Veronika is an excellent cook. The price for transportation to the volcano is 3000 watts less than in the surrounding resorts. Veronika's husband took us to a local village with a Kava tasting and indigenous dancers. I highly recommend.
- Kensen (8/5): Very good -
- Clinton (10/5): Exceptional - Absolutely everything and Veronique and Jean Marc were fantastic they so nice and very helpful 😊. We liked everything.
- Clinton (10/5): Exceptional - I loved absolutely everything the family are very special and kind hearted the meals were fantastic and 😋 the accommodation is excellent 👍 the beach was magnificent swimming and snorkeling relaxing on the ⛱️ beach I will miss this place very special plus I had a wonderful birthday cake we both loved it here. I loved everything .
- Tracy (7/5): We travel fairly regularly to Tanna, so wouldn't hesitate to book again. - The staff were amazing and so helpful. The meals at dinner time were really delicious and suitably sized and priced. Definitely didn't go hungry! Breakfast was also delicious with plenty to eat. First world problems I know, but the shower wasn't very good in our Bungalow, but our friends showers were much better in their bungalows.
- Tracy (9/5): Superb - Staff were super, friendly and so willing to accommodate requests.
Meals were really delicious.
- Oleksii (8/5): We spent an incredible 3 days at Alofa, enjoying the beach and the island. - Our bungalow was really nice, authentic and cozy. The location was perfect - just a 1 minute walk to the beach. The family that manage the properly are very helpful and friendly. Nothing.
- Matthew (9/5): Superb -
- Stan (10/5): Easily one of the best accomodations on Tanna - John and Veronique were amazing hosts and were extremely helpful when our flights got cancelled. They happily involved us in their local culture and showed us their customs. Everything is clean, beds are super comfy. When the shower head broke he immediately fixed it within 24h. You can have breakfast, lunch and dinner for reasonable prices and all meals very good and delicious. I'm all positive about my 4-night stay, highly recommended!
- Lindsey (9/5): Superb -
- Eduardo (10/5): Comfortable, friendly and relaxing! - As we were travelling on a budget and keen to meet the locals Alofa Beach bungalows was the perfect balance of comfort and friendly hospitality. Simple, relaxing and authentic looking bungalows with ensuite, running water and hot showers.
The host were lovely and ready to help with whatever we needed. The food was nice. Pancakes for breakfast :)
The bungalows are near a long stretch of coral strewn beach typical of Vanuatu and close to the local village. Perfect alternative to the resorts if you're after a more authentic experience. Good tip is not to bring food into your bungalows as it attracts little animals ;)
- Underwood (7/5): Good - Very excellent service from the staff. Lovely place with beautiful beach close by. Excellent choice for people who don’t want to spend a lot of money but don’t want to risk budget accommodation. The shower pressure did not always work and it was mostly cold.
- Deirdre (9/5): Lovely location and good value for money - Nice friendly and helpful staff. Good communication. Lovely location. 2-3 choices of melas every night. Close to the airport and not far from Lenakal village. Perfect place to relax for a few days and not very expensive. Breakfast was included in the price
- Jay (10/5): Excellent property with great facilities - Great property. Right on the beach. Very well maintained and the family that run it are very friendly and helpful. We were coming from spending two nights in a tree house near Mt Yasur volcano which had no electricity and running water. From there to here with electricity and hot water it was an amazing feeling :) the restaurant has some great food too and an amazing breakfast spread. Going to the Lenakel market and coming back is a bit of a pain given this property is off the main road. Having said that the owners make it really easy by calling a car when you do need to go. So it's not too bad.
- Diana (10/5): Nice view - The location is superb right on the beach. The bungalow is clean and has comfortable beds. The garden is well maintained. The staff is very kind and did everything to make us feel good. They helped us with the transfer to the airport and with the organization of an excursion. Thank you!
- Kensen (8/5): Awesome stay - Breakfast was okey given that the island was still recovering from the cyclone, hence the lack supply of fresh fruits. However, the bungalows location was superb with the staff who always accommodating to any request. None
- Vegard (10/5): Exceptional -
- Olivia (10/5): Loved it - John Mark was the best tour guide. He and his wife made my stay very magical!
- Brioney (10/5): We loved staying here - The staff pay a lot of attention to detail. Place settings for meals are beautiful. The cooking is very good, with a limited menu. Staff very helpful with advice and make sure guests are happy. Hot water showers, and electricity all day! Very good value for money. Quiet, clean and peaceful. Easy local buses to Lemakel, airport and other resorts. Internet can be slow, but that is a general problem for the island, not the bungalows.
- Mark (9/5): Aloofa Beach Bungalows exceed my expectations and a wonderful place to stay in a beautiful location. - Breakfast was simple and plentiful and there were good additional options for addition reasonable cost. Also lunch and dinner were very nice as well. I loved the location it was very beautiful and quiet. Tony and Veronique were wonderful hosts. Very friendly, attentive and helpful. Everything exceeded my expectations.
- Kaluatman (10/5): Exceptional - Thought it's far from the main road and town. It it the best place to relax. Peaceful and quiet, waking up to the beautiful ocean view
- Meaghan (10/5): we had a lovely time with John, Veronique and Lizzy. would absolutely recommend this property! - John, Veronique and Lizzy were so helpful and kind. the bungalows are right on the beach and it’s a beautiful property. The gardening is lovely and very welcoming. the food was very good and reasonably priced. wifi could have been stronger, and it is off the beaten path from the main road—but don’t let that deter you!!! beautiful spot.
- Beverley (4/5): Disappointing - Breakfast was very good. John and Veronique were a lovely couple and very helpful No power for 1day ( not their fault )
No hot water for two days as the gas was not turned on to our bungalow
Sheets had holes in them.
Plastic chairs collapsed causing me to fall to the tiled floor. ( Was not hurt )
No place to put travel bags except the bed or on the floor.
- Jane (6/5): our stay at Alofa was probably a bit long our purpose for going was to see mt Yasur and should have stayed 2 nights not - the managers were extremely friendly and showed us their village and went snorkeling with us. probably lack of choice of food as they ran out of many things whilst we were there ….as we prefer not to eat meat our meal choice was very limited they ran out of eggs, cola, beer and we had to pay for our bill so they could buy more at the market before the end of our stay and still didn’t buy eggs!
- Jeremy (9/5): Superb - John and Veronica where amazing and were super nice and did everything they could to make our stay comfortable. Highly recommend! Could have had wifi
- Terry (10/5): The Alofa Bungalows was fantastic and I highly recommend it - The hosts were amazing, the place was amazing.
- Bertha (10/5): Exceptional - Customer service e nice tumas.
- Ning (10/5): enjoy the rest! - good no have
- Fiondella (8/5): Very good - You're right on the beach, just two minutes walk distance to go for a swim. The bungalow was beautiful, clean and tidy.
- Roberto (2/5): know what you’re getting yourself into - located literally on the beach extremely dirty, full of bugs, ants. staff disappeared after 7pm. a nightmare!
- Nicholas (10/5): Exceptional - nice little bungalow by the sea. wonderful staff
- Jiri (10/5): Exceptional -
- Clara (10/5): Exceptional - Absolutelly lovely place amazing garden and on the beach. The couple handling the business is local and they are super nice we felt very sas yo leave. Reef un front is amazing
- Samuel (10/5): Traditional life in a confortable and welcoming place - Véronique and Jean-Marc were the most welcoming hosts. They genuinely care for our well-being, our safety and will properly recommend tours depending on the weather. They also include us in the local life and give us a rare opportunity into local tradition, cuisine, and community. Food is great, the beach is awesome. Close to the airport. Internet is unstable and a bit slow (good of emails and planning your trip, forget about uploading pictures). The black magic day tour was too expensive for what it was.
- Kirsty (8/5): Very good - Great location on beautiful beach. Friendly staff. Well priced. Good food. Bed was comfortable. More mosquitos than at Whitegrass up the road and fle screens weren't perfect but we didn't get bitten. The geckos did their work.
