Guest Reviews
- Chiara (10/5): - Jhuna was a great host and guide. He provided us with an amazing tour of Komodo islands and we saw spectacular places and had a wonderful time. The homestay is very cozy, with a nice terrace and air conditioning in the room. The food was really good and we had filtered water all the time. We had a great experience!
- Emmanuelle (10/5): -
- Monika (10/5): Thank you Jhuan for EVERYTHING ♥️🙏🏻♥️ - Thank you, Jhuan from Komodo!
I am extremely happy with his care and hospitality and truly recommend him from the bottom of my heart.
Thanks to Jhuan, I had the chance to experience the real life of the people of Komodo.
The food prepared by Jhuan’s wife was absolutely delicious, the room was clean, and everything was perfectly organized.
Warm regards, and I truly hope we meet again one day ♥️🙏🏻♥️
- Richard (9/5): Great play to stay and explore Komodo - Jhuna and his family have created a great place to stay in the former fishing village on Komodo Island. The facilities are basic but given that this is not the Côte d'Azur it's fine. Jhuna can arrange any kind of tour or trip. In Komodo National Park or the islands and sea around. He and his helpers have great knowledge about the nature in the area. And the food that his family served was delicious. On top of that your stay will help take the village further out of poverty. Worth every penny! There is no airco, but that is normal in these basic places in Indonesia.
- Yassin (10/5): BEST CHOICE! - EXCELENT CHOICE!! The stay at jhuna kmodo homestay was just perfect! The staff here is super friendly and welcomeming it will make you feel just like home. The place is spotless clean and looked after with amazing views from the rooftop on top of that you will be suporting a local family staying here. The food provided is deliciuos and with plenty of variety. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!
- Rachael (10/5): - This is definitely the best way to explore komodo! Staying in the village is a fantastic experience and the homestay is right in the heart of the village. Jhuna is a great host, and arranged our day trips to visit the national park and for snorkeling at manta point. He can also organise a private boat to acces the island if you don’t want to use the public ferry. The food was excellent, and you can even buy a beer at the local shop.
- Juliane (10/5): Tolles Erlebnis!
- Edgar Poe (9/5): - Komodo Island met our expectations.
The accommodation was simple but spacious.
Meals are provided, everything was very tasty.
Interestingly, we were the only tourists in the village, so we attracted some attention. People were kind and friendly, with lots of children everywhere.
As for the Komodo dragons, we were lucky and saw a total of four. It's currently mating season, so it's not unusual for some tourists to come and not see any at all.
On the second day, we went on a trip with several stops—all of them worth it.
First was Padar Island—there's a beautiful view from the top of the trail above the bay, although there were quite a few tourists.
Then we went snorkeling at Pink Beach, Manta Point, and Taka Makassar. Unfortunately, we didn’t see any manta rays, but we were lucky to spot a stingray hidden in the sand, some turtles, and a young blacktip reef shark.
Otherwise, the underwater life was beautiful and colorful.
We really enjoyed it and will remember it fondly.
Thank you very much for everything—we definitely recommend it!
- Edward (9/5): Superb -
- Leo (8/5): Very good - Komodo Park ist amazing. Jhuna is very friendly. The house is clean, the food is good. The village people are also very nice but expect to see a lot of garbage, just don't be surprised. I would reccomend this homestay, because the money goes to the people of the village. We took the public boat to komodo island which I can not reccomend. We had to wait nearly four hours on the boat before it departed and the it took another 4 to arrive at the island. So we spent a whole day just waiting. People were through ingredients plastic in the sea on the way to komodo.
We aware that you can't do anything on the island apart from a short walk with the guide. You will then have to rent a boat from the host. The boat is very comfortable and prices are ok. However the boat is very loud so you can't really talk which is a pity.
For snorkeling bring your own equipment, the one provided was not in good condition and I couldn't enjoy snorkeling that day so much.
Be sure to plan well with Jhuna. The second day was supposed to be just beach next to the village, however he was flexible and we went to turtle point instead.
I was a bit sad that I didn't have the feeling that the host was interested in telling you a lot about the Dragons or island or village. You always have to ask questions and the answers can be quite short. And when asking more details sometimes he says he already answered that. So at some point I wasn't in the mood to ask more...
We had a tour of rinca a few days later and learned much more with the guide there. Maybe our host wasn't in a good mood these days.
- Kevin (10/5): As mentioned above - Jhuna opened his doors and made sure all our needs were met , we came to the island for 1 thing to see the dragons and Jhuna made sure we seen plenty … many more then the national park tour . Also Jhuna took us on a boat tour back to Labuan bajo and took us on a private snorkeling tour where we seen tropical fish and coral, aswell as huge manta rays swimming in the ocean … Jhuna went above and beyond to make sure we had a great time and we are more then grateful . Thank you
- Dana (9/5): Authentic stay in an interesting island village - Jhuna organized our itinerary nicely and gave us a great walk to see the Komoido Dragons. His nephew, Funny, followed through with an excellent boat tour to scenic locations and snorkeling with a manta. The accommodation was right in the middle of a lone village on the island of Komodo. The people were incredibly friendly. As par for the course in such a village, our place were very basic with fresh water out of a tub. However, the homestay was very clean and the food was excellent. Electricity was incredibly sporadic during our stay (no fault of the homestay) so at night we could not use the fan as we slept. Wifi was also very sporadic at best. The score given is high because this was an experience that we found enriching and was worth doing. Jhuna's homestay allows travelers to stay in the middle of a truly authentic village among similar buildings, nice people, and many animals. There were many mosquitos, so bring repellant. Also, you will hear many sounds, voices and animals. Earplugs would help if sounds affect your sleep.
- Petra (10/5): Exceptional - It was very amazing place. We lived in the middle of village with very interesting people. There are 2000 people living there and everyone knows each other. They are one big family.
Jhuna was taken well with us, he was very polite and helpful. The acvomodation was beautiful and clean a with excellent food. We met 14 Komodská dragons. Very impressive animals. Likewise, Manta in the sea. The trips were excellently organized, the ship's crew behaved professionally and led the ship safely even in bad weather. If you want to get to know Komo
do up, this is the best choice!
- Ying (8/5): Such an impressive tour. - Jhuna is a very nice guider, and he planned for the private tour and made us avoid bumping into big tour group. We stayed for 2 nights and took private boat for 2 days. He found 9 komoto dragons and about 20 mentas. Thanks to his wife who made good dinner for us. If it was equipped with hair dryer and hot water shower, it would be better. Also it is village, there are some animals noise and running.
- Dakota (7/5): Good - Overall, we had a nice time at Jhuna homestay. Jhuna helped us with finding transport to Komodo and helped arrange expeditions around Komodo to see all the tourist spots. His house was very clean and the food was absolutely delicious (some of the best we had in Indonesia). Komodo and the surrounding areas are absolutely stunning! Highlights of our stay included: 1. Seeing so many dragons (our max was 7 in the morning) right behind the village. It's obvious that they feed the dragons, but if you want a guaranteed sighting of some big dragons the village is def the place to visit. Jhuna took some nice pitctures of us with the dragons. 2. Snorkeling at long beach - water was crystal clear and the corals and fish were fairly healthy. 3. Swimming with giant rays at manta point - we got super lucky and had around 10 giants rays swirling between us. Booking our tour directly with Jhuna meant we had a private boat to take us around the area and it was super nice to stay at places longer and at our own pace versus other tours coming from Laubuan Bajo. While we had additionally planned to take the local ferry to Komodo, Jhuna let us take a private boat back with him as he had brought it to Labuan Bajo the day prior to drop off tourists which was an unexpected treat. We found the tour could have been better organized. We booked 2 days of activities with Jhuna. The first day included visiting Padar Island in the late morning, which was nice because we missed the bulk of tourists but it was already extremely hot. After we went to long beach to snorkel and eat lunch, which was beautiful and we had a really good time here. Then we went and swam with the rays at manta point, also amazing experience. Then we went to taka makassar island. At this point it was getting pretty late in the evening and we had spent almost the entire day in the sun and were burnt and dehydrated. The next day the only thing on the schedule was a quick dragon walk behind the village and then a boat ride to pink beach, which Jhuna said we could stay at for as long as we wanted. Pink beach was super disappointing and the surf churned up the sand so we couldn't even snorkel there. Jhuna kept pushing that we could stay for like 5 hours but honestly we were bored, cause who just wants to sit on a tiny beach for 5 hours. We ended up going back early cause we were bored and burnt, and then just sat around the homestay for the rest of the day. I wish some of the activities from the first day could have been moved to the second to make for a more balanced experience. Additionally, if you're a budget traveler this experience is not for you. While accommodation and transport to Komodo is affordable if you want to do any tourist stuff be expected to pay top dollar. After seeing how much we paid total it was equivalent to a private cabin on a stay-aboard boat. Additionally, because you can't walk around Komodo by yourself you are basically forced to pay the very high tour prices or you can't do anything. Booking the homestay really depends on what experience you're looking for, do you want to sleep on land or sea?
- Koen (9/5): Go for a unique experience, you'll love it! - This was a great experience. You stay in the middle of Komodo Village with Jhuna and his family. They really make you feel at home and if you like street photography then this is a fantastic place to walk around. The room is simple with a matras on the floor and a fan to keep you cool at night, the bathroom is clean and instead of a shower hose you simply use a bucket to poor water over yourself. I knew this beforehand and I loved it. It was all I needed.
Jhuna's wife cooked me delicious meals and she was super friendly. Jhuna is a ranger in Komodo and he took me out on private walks to see the dragons which was fantastic. I managed to get many wonderful photos of these ancient reptiles.
I made a deal for a 4D/3N private tour with Jhuna and I got great value for money. I had a private transfer from and back to Labuan Bajo, we visited most common places for snorkeling, pink beach and mantas, and of course the Komodo Dragons. If you want to experience something different in a more homelike situation then don't hesitate and book with Jhuno. There's a big difference between visiting Komodo Island for just a a few short hours or actually staying there and being able to walk around this authentic village with the opportunity to see the dragons in a private setting. The local villagers are incredibly friendly and enjoy talking to you. I loved it. My stay exceeded my expectations. I knew it would be basic, but basic is all I need and it was absolutely great. DOn't expect high speed wifi, this is just the situation on the island. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. No problem, the world continued to spin around when I was offline and social media hadn't changed a bit ;)
- Justin (8/5): A remote rustic Indonesian village homestay -- a trip of a lifetime! - We stayed three nights with Jhuna at his homestay, and wow, what a trip. He and his wife Desi served us three squares a day of Komodo Island fare: fresh hot rice, beautifully butterflied and grilled fish, chicken, and a little vegetables. Jhuna expertly guided us to see not only the Komodo dragons (astonishing!) but also manta rays, turtles, and all kinds of wonderful fish in living coral, Padar island viewpoint, and two pink sand beaches (we suggest you research and negotiate the price for the guiding and sightseeing BEFORE booking the homestay as there are no obvious alternatives in Komodo village). In the evenings, before tucking into comfortable beds under mosquito netting, we strolled around the bustling village enjoying sunsets, sea breezes, and having great conversations with some of the friendliest, most welcoming people we’ve ever had the good fortune to encounter in our travels. This rustic homestay doesn’t have a sink or running water, the very clean toilet and shower required use of a plastic water ladle from clean basins the host refilled each day, and the house was not sealed from the elements. I write all of this in the good section because this is what we expected and wanted — an authentic village homestay experience. The unit had decent WiFi, but power outages did occur. Notes for packing: Hand sanitizer. Plenty of bug spray and sunscreen. Good earplugs. We made a point to buy beers, snacks, and souvenirs from the many small shops in the village to spread out our spending. The little village schools are under-resourced, so a fresh pack of dry-erase markers for the teachers would be very welcome. If you have more room in your bag, bring pens and notebooks. Jhuna will get them to those who need them. Enjoy! It’s a very special place. The Booking.com ad was misleading which lowered our overall rating from a 10 to an 8. The bathroom is not private as listed when we booked — it is shared between the two guest rooms (all guests must pass through the common area where the host sometimes is to reach the bathroom). Food was not a “buffet,” instead it is a set family-style meal of mostly fish, squid, chicken, and eggs with little vegetables and no fruit (food is no longer served Indonesian style on a carpet on the floor as was shown in several pics in the ad). The rooms do not have a terrace or sea view. There is a common-use raised entry landing/balcony with 4 chairs shared with the host and other guests. The home is in the second row of houses from the ocean, so you look from the balcony between two neighbors’ homes to see the sea). There is no “free private parking.” Access to village is only by boat (3.5 hours on public ferry (150k IDR pp—ask host about it) or on private boat (either host arranged or hire one in Labuan Bajo) for a lot more (2.5M IDR for two people one-way—more comfortable, but less of local experience). All of Jhuna and Desi’s hardworking, gracious, and thoughtful hospitality doesn’t change a few facts—noisy village life starts soon after the early morning prayer (around 4:30 am), and this confined remote island village is dealing with challenges (e.g., rats, trash, and toxic smoke from small periodic trash fires). If these facts are going to ruin the trip for you, this is not your trip. If you can take it in stride, then you might have the time of your life. I suggest bringing cash for any booked tours with host as the host does not cover for any electronic payment fees or conversion rates to IDR in his price. Jhuna is constantly improving and I expect many of these concerns within his control to be improved for future guests. I share all of this to help set expectations (and encourage revisions to the ad). I would definitely stay again and I highly recommend this homestay!
- Pol (10/5): Great homestay -
- Daniel (10/5): You need to be ready for authentic Indonesia with all + & - (not for everyone), we enjoyed it! :-) -
- Lavin (10/5): Unique stay on Komodo Island with great host and comfortable accommodation - Unique opportunity to stay on Komodo Island! Comfortable stay, clean with great food (all meals included). Only two rooms so you are taken care of.The host was amazing plus offered regular trips to see the dragons and visit all the National Park has to offer. This is a very local experience in the village so enjoy everything that comes with that...close proximity to lots of friendly, active families and animals! None
- Michał (10/5): Adventure in the jungle - We were so glad for the organization of the whole trip with every place which was really worth to see.
- Leslie (10/5): One of the best experiences we have ever had: total immersion in the local life. Erjun has organized a very nice program -
- Martin (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sarah (8/5): A rare opportunity to experience local village life - This is a really wonderful opportunity to experience local village life. Occupying the Upstairs of a Ranger from the National park. This is luxurious spy village standards with a Squat toilet and large buckets of water for showering and flushing said toilet. What was most amazing about this? Home Stay was the sounds of the village – chickens roosters and goats run freely and provide quite a Dawn chorus coupled with the ubiquitous called to prayer. Bring earplugs if you are a light sleeper! The stay includes three wheels which were absolutely delicious – some of the best food I’ve eaten in Indonesia.
When you arrive at the Home Stay, you walk through the village and passed the beach strewn with plastic bottles and discarded plastic wrappers . when the tide came in, we saw plastic bottles popping in the water out to see in what is a UNESCO nature reserve. I don’t know how much tourism is responsible for this but if it is we should probably stay away or at the very least ensure we take all our plastic bottles (we used refillable bottles we filled from large water tanks) and take all other plastic back with us. Although the property is very good value – particularly for the food provided – getting to the island involves chartering a private boat which is expensive – 7.5 million which is a lot when there’s just two of you travelling. We arranged it through the host at our Home Stay and I would recommend, asking for a boat that he is on. he was with another group when we arrived and we were on a boat with another guide who was lovely but had limited English and it felt a bit of a shame to mostly be getting our information about the island dragons from my lonely planet. also the boat returning us to Labuan Bajo broke down and we ended with a fast foot slightly terrifying journey on a much smaller boat with no toilet – no emergency small boat and no lifejackets! I know our host wasn’t very happy about that either.
- Bruce (10/5): We enjoyed a few days of visiting beautiful sites around the park by boat, dragon watching, and an up-close perspective - The Homestay is tight in the middle of the busy village and a boat ride from fabulous sites around Komodo. Arjun and his team were welcoming and friendly and did a great job taking care of us. The room is basic but comfortable and clean, and all meals were taken care of by his family. Arjun was busy our first day, so his cousins Fani was in charge of us and also did a great job. We took the public boat to the island, which was colorful and interesting but not very comfortable. I’d recommend asking Arjun for a ride.
- Boguslaw (10/5): The best place in Komodo Village - I couldn't imagine better place in the Komodo village, where the rental business started just 6 month ago! Earlier you would even dream to live here with locals, now it is possible. The Jhuna Komodo Homestay is profesjonally prepared to visit tourists, the owner and also park ranger is a very smart and kind man, his wife cooks delicious meals, the house is perfect clean. Everything deserves the highest rating. Other disadvantages are due to the nature of the island. Highly recomended ! Nothing
- Emma (10/5): Great way to see Komodo Islands and 10/10 stay! - Jhuana was such a great host. His wife does all the cooking and her food was great and really traditional. This was the best way to see the Komodo Islands. We were never rushed and Jhuana helped us avoid the crowds. In some places it was just us (3 people staying at the Homestay). Staying in Komodo village was an authentic experience and it was easy to go and see the Komodo dragons. We saw 4 dragons the first day and 3 the next day (a few a second time and one new one) as it was mating season. We also saw dolphins, snorkeled several times including with about 10 turtles near Manta point. There were some people on multi day sailing trips and they had short times at most places and seemed more rushed. The Homestay itself was comfortable and I was tired every day coming back. They provide meals and water. Beer is available. From reviews for the day trips it often seems like there are hundreds or thousands of people at some places all at the same time, so I am really glad to have done the homestay. I got a little bit sick of eating rice for breakfast after a day or two, but that is probably just because I’m not used to it. Nothing else that I didn’t like, however a few things I think are good to be aware of. The boat for the transfers and tours has quite a loud motor, so you may want to bring some ear plugs if you’re sensitive to this. The village of Komodo is obviously quite remote and fairly disadvantaged. There is a fair bit of trash in the village and a lot of animals like goats, chickens, cats and rats, however the people are very friendly and have a real sense of community. Komodo is predominately Muslim so you will hear the call to prayer several times a day and for women you may want to dress a bit more conservatively if you can. Its worth being aware that the Homestay has a squat toilet and cold bucket shower, so but the beds are comfortable and the fan provided is enough to cool you down. You may want to bring some cards and a good book for downtime and snacks if there is anything you really can’t live without for a few days. You can’t buy much on the island and there is no atms but if you run out of money Juhana will be able to help you pay for extras like souvenirs.
- Vincenzo (10/5): Exceptional - I give it a 10 for the overall experience (nothing to do with tourist excursions from Labuan Bajo).
Jhuna is a great host, guide and sailor.
His wife is a wonderful cook, so there is no need to go out in vain in search of a restaurant.
It is not a hotel but a real village house (therefore: shared bathroom with another room and shower with basin), you need to have a great spirit of adaptability, however for us it was the best way to experience the island, seeing the dragons up close and discover incredible beaches).
Thank you Jhuna, I wish you and your family all the best.
- Vincenzo (10/5): Exceptional - Wonderful experience. Nothing to do with tourist excursions from Labuan Bajo.
Jhuna was perfect host, guide and sailor (also ask him about transfers to and from the island).
His wife is a wonderful cook (no need to go to a restaurant).
It certainly requires a certain spirit of adaptability. You have to be aware that it is not a hotel but a real village house, so: bathroom shared with another room and shower with basin.
However this allows you to really experience the island, see the dragons up close and discover incredible beaches without crowds.
Thank you Jhune, I wish you and your family all the best.
- Yvan (10/5): Exceptional - If you want to visit the Komodo National parc we can only recommend Jhuna’s homestay. Jhuna is an adorable person who always pays attention to what you need and makes sure everything is okay.
Moreover you will be directly at the center of the activities and Jhuna knows lots of activities depending on what you want to do. He knows where and when to go you to avoid the crowds, which we really appreciated. We went snorkeling on different spots and thanks to him we enjoyed these spots alone to contemplate the underwater life. He takes care of everything: the transfers, the materials and everything is well organized.
The food is cooked by his wife and is really delicious, you can enjoy the local fish, meat and more.
- Camilla (10/5): An unique experience in komodo - The host (jhuna) was incredibly welcoming, very kind and always available to every request or question we had. The place was in perfect condition, very clean and tidy. In the booking food is included which was always delicious. Jhuna was also an incredible guide, always making sure that we had the best time and could enjoy every experience to the fullest.
- Paul (8/5): Classic rustic brilliance - This was such an enjoyable experience, I have to advise everyone to try it out. Jhuna was perfect host, arranged pickup from the port, and sorted all the tour attractions for me. Got to see the mantas and some rather big lizards (even though it was mating season). Komodo island and its surroundings is such an amazing place. Oh can’t forget to mention the chef, the food was excellent standard. The goat in the neighbors (I nearly had goat stew by 10pm).
- Zack (10/5): Exceptional - Brilliant weekend on komodo island with the best guide. Absolutely nothing bad to say about it.
The food was amazing aswell. I wouldn't recommend for solo travellers on a budget but it's well worth the money
- Hanyang (10/5): Exceptional - Jhuna is a fantastic host, very informative and friendly. If you want to visit Komodo island, make sure you give Jhuna's homestay a go!
- Anna (10/5): Adventures, fun and highly recommend stay! - Great host, guide and a very intelligent and attentive person. Honest, knowledgeable and trustworthy. The best part of the home stay is that you can tailor your stay according to your needs and liking. Khulna is always there to help you and meet your needs. He also called me weeks before our arrival and sent all the pricing sharing his advice and suggestions. We saw many Komodo Dragons, fish, mantas and had great times every day. It was very hard to leave. We enjoyed the stay very much and will be back very soon!!! Also, the public boat service is unpredictable and I do not recommend it.
- Florian (10/5): Exceptional -
- 妙蓮 (10/5): Five-star trip experience in komodo island! - Five-star trip experience in komodo island! Erjun is really reliable. He knows where to find more komodo dragons outside of the national park and also keep you safe. He also knows the best time to visit sight seeings so you can enjoy the view without too many tourists. Just let him know what you prefer and he'll give you good suggestions.
The homestay is really cozy. Food is fresh and delicious. People are friendly. It's the best option if you'd like to experience how the local life is.
All in all, you'll get a totally customized trip. Just stay with Erjun!
- Fabienne (10/5): Highly recommended homestay with exceptional local food - Nestled in Komodo village, my stay at this homestay hosted by Jeki was unforgettable. Jeki organized private tours tailored to my preferences, offering an authentic experience away from the tourist crowds (to see the Komodos, Mantas and for snorkeling). His expertise in Komodo dragon encounters, the ocean inhabitants and the region ensured memorable moments and stunning photographs. The homestay provided a simple (local standard) but cozy retreat with delicious local cuisine cooked by his wife. Seamless transfers and reliable internet access added to the convenience. For travelers seeking an immersive Komodo adventure, this homestay offers hospitality and local insight beyond compare. (Note: It's not a hotel; you stay with a local family.) Furthermore, I would like to point out that Jeki was super helpful via WhatsApp for transport arrangements & other questions and flexible in arranging the stay.
Thank you! And all the Best, you and your family will be remembered :-)
- Monika (10/5): Very highly recommended - Amazing, clean, and comfortable homestay and super nice and extremely helpful host.
The host is a ranger, and he knows everything about the komodo dragons and the area. The village was the best place to see them! There were many and they were big and active. Erjun, the host, will take the best pictures for you. He knows where to find them and how to deal with them. I also went with him to Komodo Park, where all the tours from Labuan Bajo come to see them. It wasn't even half as good as the village. In my opinion, to get the best experience and the feel of the authentic, local live, it's best to stay in his homestay and organise the trips with him. He will also take you to other places like Pink Beach, Padar Island, snorkelling with Mantas, and more.
I have to mention that the food was provided for all day and it was delicious. And Erjun will help with boat transfers. He picked me up from the port and dropped me in on time. He sent me detailed information about what boat to take from Labuan Bajo and from what Port. He even sent me a picture of the boat to make it easier. Top class service!!!
Also, a big bonus is that the property has internet.
Thank you very much, and best wishes!
- Nil (10/5): Exceptional - Amazing experience. Great tour guide. Nice food and nice photos.
- Luigi (9/5): My Komodo Dream Fulfilled. - Erjun’s homestay on beautiful Komodo Island was everything I had hoped for. I was able to experience living in a genuine Komodo village while being well taken care of by Erjun and his family. His wife’s food was delicious and plentiful. The home is clean and comfortable. Any issue I had was resolved and Erjun is very knowledgeable about the island and the Komodo Dragons I came to see. Being a Park Ranger he guided us through the park where we witnessed multiple Dragons, he also brought us to beautiful beaches and sites on the neighboring islands. His knowledge of the islands was valuable to making my stay a memory that I will always treasure. The public boat from Labuan Bajo only comes a few times a week. However, Erjun was valuable in providing alternative transportation.
