- Jul (6/5): - L'emplacement

- Lucie (2/5): - The staff were nice. Avoid this place if you can. Filthy, full of unfriendly and rude people (mostly the ones staying long term) - noisy and disrespectful. You can say goodbye to sleep especially if you're in a room close to communal areas. I wouldn't stay again even if they paid me.
- Emma (10/5): -
- Natalie (9/5): - Good hostel with a great atmosphere in a beautiful area :))
- Sally (7/5): Less 'Boutique', more 'Rustic and Outback' - The beach location is the best thing about the retreat and John's $5 shuttle bus waiting, when I got off the Greyhound bus. The bed I slept in was clean and comfortable and the air con worked well to cool down the room in order to sleep. The hostel itself is less ‘boutique’ and more ‘rustic and ‘outback’ so don’t expect too much. The bathroom was a bit ‘tired’ but fine for a couple of nights. I was lucky to be allocated an 8-bed mixed dorm by myself since it was low season, which was a huge bonus after having driven a van 2000km+ solo. (However, there were no lockers in the rooms to put your valuables or bags/suitcases in.) I met some lovely locals on the beach and enjoyed my dip in the stinger-netted-off-area on Mission Beach. Leny’s fruit shop has fresh produce and the Mini Market some essentials, at a price though. The fish and chips next door were fresh and cooked perfectly and the staff very friendly. The Pub across the road is a good place to escape to, although I only bought a drink and sat on the deck out front to write.
The second night, when the long-term guests were out working the rest of the short-term travellers could use the couch, TV room and the table. It was more comfortable socialising together rather than in our rooms and we had a great time playing cards and chatting about our past and future adventures. Being next to the TV room was a disadvantage. On my first night, long-term guests were still cooking after 11pm and eating in the TV room so my room smelt like a kitchen. The noise of the TV and laughing went on way past midnight, which was not conducive to resting. At around 11.15pm I’d had enough and asked them to turn the volume down and be more considerate. Thankfully this didn’t occur on the second night after outlining to reception that the 10pm closed kitchen sign was not being observed.
Unfortunately, due to the high volume of 'long-termers', the vibe of the hostel has been negatively affected. These guests treat the hostel like home, leaving their clothes and stuff all around the place and playing their music all morning in the living area. To escape the noise of the morning music I took my laptop down to the picnic tables in park next to the beach to work and write, which was better than staying in the common area. The fridge and freezer had little space for newcomers and the kitchen sponges were smelly and needed to be changed more regularly for hygiene purposes. The staff working did little to promote a place of social equality and inclusiveness; the reception staff lay around, on the couch hanging out with the ‘long-termers’ like a 'high school click' when not at the reception desk, and thus was quite unapproachable, especially to less confident younger individuals.
As a solo traveller this hostel was quite isolating and seemingly unfriendly. The long-term guests and staff on duty did little to integrate with short-term travellers. All the other 2-3 night guests I spoke to totally agreed! ‘Budget and basic’ would be my rating after spending more than a year travelling and staying in hostels all over the world. It has the potential for more if a more mature, inclusive approach was taken by staff (who worked when I was there) and a few facilities were updated.

- Cleary (6/5): Ideal for a short stay, comfy mattresses but beds was unsteady. Only 2 bathrooms for the whole hostel wasn’t great but t - Close to the beach, nice welcoming and helpful staff Bunk beds felt very frail

- Alexia (6/5): Perfect for a short stay - I booked at really short notice but the room was very clean (except some dust but that’s not a huge issue). Kitchen was clean as was the common area. The bathrooms were decently clean, could probably do with being cleaned twice a day but they definitely weren’t awful.

- Alex (9/5): -
- Sara (9/5): Superb - In the middle of town and close to the beach You can hear the noise from the pub in the evenings
- Michael (10/5): Exceptional -
- Geraint (6/5): New Owners needed - The hostel manager, Stef was a star. he's pro active in all ways about the place, communicative, helpful, informative. he was invaluable keeping us informed about our dissapeering snorkel trip. He's keeping The Retreat as ship shape as possible under difficult circumstances.
The beds were comfortable as were the common areas. the showers are hot and easy to get right.
It's a friendly family vibe. However, the whole place needs a deep clean. the fixtures and fittings generally need maintainance. Oh and the toaster broke but the owners are to tight to afford new stuff 😞
- Steve (6/5): Pleasant - Location and price The facility is a bit grubby but it is a backpackers so no real drama
- Jon (8/5): Very good -
- Thibault (7/5): Good -

- Ani (10/5): Exceptional -
- Heidi (10/5): So Relaxing with Beautiful Surounds and Character! -
- Matteo (8/5): Very good -
- Toby (10/5): Perfect for a couple of nights - Small hostel with a friendly vibe. Twice weekly minibus trips to woolworths, good area for cooking, small but nice pool area. Shuttle from greyhound stop to hostel for €5AUD (wouldn’t recommend walking it with your bag in the heat). Great location if you are doing a skydive with skydive Aus and if you book it through the hostel you get a free night. Also very close to the beach but you can only swim in a designated netted area. Location - not a lot to do in Mission beach but very nice for respite and there are a couple of basic shops.
- Wouter (9/5): Superb - The manager (Stef) is a great guy and very helpful!
- Carina (10/5): Perfect place in paradise. Will come back x - Amazing and extremely clean hostel with great amenities. The staff are incredibly helpful and friendly
- Giulia (10/5): People who make the experience great - Nice atmosphere, special thanks to Stef the manager and Mattia, housekeeping member :) lovely people Nothing
- Laura (10/5): Exceptional - The staff were amazing! The place was in the best location and they had everything you need. Would definitely stay again hands down.
- Margherita (2/5): Very poor - due to flooding on the road I was unable to stay. I kindly asked for a refund at least for a part so that they could pay the taxes charged to them by the booking site, but with no positive outcome. Moral of the story even though they were warned promptly they kept all the money! think about it before booking!
- Olivia (10/5): Exceptional - Super nice and cozy hostel. The hostel manager is incredibly friendly and open to all questions. The hostel itself is very well-maintained and, above all, extremely clean. On Mondays and Thursdays, they even offer to take you to the supermarket. The hostel is located very close to the beach. It's in a rather quiet area, which is perfect if you're looking to spend a few relaxing days by the sea.
- Fiona (10/5): Exceptional - Feeling like home, being in a big shared house but small enough to talk to everyone.
Stef (the manager) and the long term residents are really welcoming us.
- Scout (10/5): Exceptional - Social, colourful, a step away from the beach, good pubs and stuff. Not as perfect as the pictures show, but I loved it anyway. Good vibes
- Vito (7/5): Good -
- Phoebe (10/5): Exceptional -
- Anna (1/5): Bad - Nothing, it was dirty and nothing like advertised All of it. It was S**t
- Jessica (9/5): Superb - Good facilities, clean and well kept.
Easy to get to and from greyhound bus with shuttle, Woolworths trips on mon and thurs. It was quite warm in the communal cooking/lounge area.
- Katerina (6/5): Pleasant -
- Mark (8/5): Nice relaxing hostel - Great location by Mission Beach and close to shops and restaurants
Friendly staff at reception
Relaxed vibe in the lounge and kitchen area. Really easy to meet new people Could be slightly cleaner
- Leon (5/5): Horrible sleep. - Mattress completely worn through - you‘re basically laying on the metal bedframe. It‘s really the basics. Not even ok for a night.
- Daniel (4/5): Great location but not if you want to sleep! - Very friendly check in staff
Amazing location right on the beach and next to restaurants and a shop
5$ shuttle service from the Greyhound bus stop (follows bus arrivals)
Cheapest option in the area The mattresses and beds were awful! The metal on the bunk beds was concaved inwards from so much use. Coupled with the very thin overused mattresses which sunk in the middle. Felt like I was falling through into the floor and had back ache for 2 days. (Obviously reflected in the low price however, get what you pay for)
Guests making a lot of noise and music til after midnight and staff does nothing about it!! Why bother putting “quiet hours” if they just ignore them and don’t enforce??
This, combined with the awful bed, meant I barely slept for 2 days.
Smoke detector in the room didn’t have any batteries in it
- Marín (7/5): Good - It was on the main street and next to the beach We found trash under the bed.
Really old mattress
- Markus (10/5): Markus D. Brownies expression - Awsome Staff - very clean - very relaxed - all in all a little dream Nothing
- Maelis (9/5): Superb -
- Oliwia (9/5): Superb -
- Sandra (8/5): Fine for a few nights :) - Nice location near the beach. Kitchen and bathroom okay, can't say anything about the rooms because I had my camper ;) Could be a bit more space in the kitchen, bathroom could be cleaner.
- Tina (10/5): Comfort and clean close to beach - Handy Nothing
- Orla (2/5): Very poor - The cleanliness of the room was not good enough for the price I paid. There was a foul stale smell in the room when I arrived. It was clear that the room was not cleaned properly because there was a lot of dust laying around. We removed the bed sheets and covers when checking out. The dirt, dust, hair, that I found was disgusting.
The hostel has 3 bathrooms (of my knowledge) in total which is not sufficient for the amount of guests staying at the hostel. This led to long waiting times to use the bathroom.
Also, if you are not a fan of lizards then this hostel is not the place for you. I spotted multiple lizards around the walls inside! Which made me uncomfortable.
- Lisa (8/5): Great place to park up & sleep in your car/camper next to the beach - Location next to the beach. The staff were lovely. The ambience was great. Loved the open plan, comfy seating and fairy lights. Liked the option to park up and sleep in the car/van. Not enough toilet and shower facilities for all the rooms and people who pay to park onsite.
- Raquel (3/5): Poor - It was close to beach and just for one night was the cheapest accommodation that we found There were people at 3am watching a TV show next to our room and we could not sleep.
- Nicholls (10/5): Exceptional -
- Caterina (7/5): Good -
- Julia (10/5): Put this on your list ♡ - Exceptionally clean. Friendly staff and very helpful. Pleasant peaceful atmosphere. Very close to beach with rainforest walks and some shops. Very restful after much travelling. Definitely recommend a short stop or stay longer. 🤔 👍 Nothing to not like.
- Angeles (3/5): Poor - Location There are 2 bathrooms for 40 people accomodation.. room poor cleannesses.
- Niamh (9/5): Superb -
- Elora (6/5): Pleasant - great location, nice staff, good beds bad wifi, dirty kitchen
- Paul (5/5): I left after one night as couch surfed at friends nearby - Availability. I had never been in dormitory accomodation before so uncertain what to expect - good for backpackers as lowcost
- Julian (1/5): Worse stay, 1 hour of sleep and no AC - It mentioned including AC but that was not the case. Also had 1 hour of sleep since the public area with tv etc is directly next to the rooms. So could not sleep until 4 am and woke up by the first persons at 5 am. I understand that for a cheap price you can’t expect to much, but this was definitely not worth the money.
- Lea (7/5): A good stay for a few days - Small accommodation in the middle of town. Cosy social area. We had a room with a bathroom which wasn’t cleaned any of the 4 days I was there :(
- Lucy (10/5): Super cool little rustic hostel - Staff are great! Very cheap and nice area Nothing it’s great
- Daniel (8/5): Very good -
- Mirko (10/5): Exceptional - Loved the tropical and chill vibes.
The staff working in there was amazing too, they organised a little bonfire the night I was there..amazing experience, they also gave me a ride to the bus stop the next day..absolutely legends!!! I wish I could have stayed longer
- Lilia (7/5): Good -
- Linda (8/5): Very good - The olace was close of the beach and restaurants. The staff was friendly and very helpful 😊 Nothing
- Christoph (10/5): Exceptional - Nice hostel with rustic charm, very close to a beautiful beach (stinger net just a 10 min. walk away).
- Coline (5/5): Passable - Nice people Bed was not confortable at all
- Mehdi (9/5): Superb -
- Johanna (7/5): Good -
- Kim (10/5): Exceptional -
- Amanda (9/5): Perfect location and comfy stay. - Fantastic location in such a lovely town. Comfy bed and good laundry facilities. Not big but adequate with cooling facilities, tv room and lovely chill out sofas. Nothing it was all good
- Carolina (10/5): Exceptional - Awesome location, specially if you're here for sky diving! .
- Emilia (8/5): Great stay! - The outdoor style kitchen Air way too cold in the room
- Josep-oriol (8/5): Very good -
