Guest Reviews
- Tamae (7/5): - Great location, wonderful hospitality, good food Bathroom was old, very little water from the shower, and the toilet floor was always wet (don’t know where the water was coming from). Lots of flies in the dining area and ticks in the bed - we got bitten everywhere.
- Dee09 (9/5): Good - The location was good. Thanks to Mussa and his team everything was superb. The snorkeling team was good as well. Will definitely visit the place again Breakfast
- Nicole (8/5): -
- Sheila (3/5): Its cheap but not cheerful - The location is fabulous. Beachfront property The flies! It was impossible to eat with them. Garbage is just heaped up and they come in swarms. The room smelled awful and musty. Even though i only stayed one night I was charged for a week and the owner refused to meet me when I left which was disappointing.
- Björn (5/5): Nice for shortterm - Super Lage, nette Leute und köstliches Essen!
Bed was good and Moskitonet all over! 👍🏼 Der Beachfront bungalow is very basic. The shower didn‘t work properly, same to the sink.
- Ikuko (9/5): -
- Hussain (8/5): Would stay again here - The friendliness and the kindness of the location was amazing.
- Boris (9/5): - Tout était parfait ! Un vrai paradis! Moussa est au petit soins ainsi que tout le personnel :-) Je cherche toujours .....;-)
- Marisa (10/5): Unforgettable stay – like leaving a piece of our heart behind! - Juani Beach Bungalows is not just a place to stay – it's a feeling, an experience, and a memory that stays with you long after you've left. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with open arms and genuine smiles. The owner is a truly wonderful human being – full of joy, warmth, and a deep desire to make every guest feel at home. His mantra, *Hakuna Matata*, isn’t just a saying here – it’s a way of life. You really don’t need to worry about anything; everything is taken care of with love and attention.
The bungalows are charming and comfortable, perfectly blending with the natural beauty of the surroundings. The beach is simply breathtaking – soft sand, turquoise waters, and unforgettable sunsets. Every evening, we gathered around a fire on the beach with music, dance, and laughter – it felt like pure happiness.
The food was excellent – fresh, flavorful, and lovingly prepared. But what truly made our stay unforgettable was the staff. Each and every person made us feel like family, going above and beyond to make us feel comfortable and welcome. Their kindness, joy, and sense of community touched our hearts.
We left Juani Bungalows feeling like we left a piece of our heart behind. It’s more than a destination – it’s a home, a celebration of life, and a reminder of what happiness truly feels like. We can’t wait to come back!

- Kristina (10/5): Exceptional - The hole of the place. The feeling of being welcome and not as a turist, but as a human. Mussa is the carrier of the place, his way to run this place is so responsible for Natur and respectful to his staff, it all shows. This is the best holiday we ever had, and i give it my warmest recommendations. And I have been traveling to Tanzania for four years now. Mosquitos bites 😄
- Nicholas (10/5): Exceptional - Really nice owners and staff. Very cute little bungalows.
- Lucy (8/5): Breezy - Great location in the beach, friendly and helpful staff. Nothing
- David (10/5): Five weeks of restful, relaxing bliss. I’ve booked for next year! - Gorgeous location, right on the beach. Friendly and attentive staff. Just a superb lodge. I’m struggling to think of anything I would change.
- Jasmin (10/5): Definetly the best place to stay for good value for your money! - Location is perfect. The walk to the city by the beach is about 20 min and you walk across the local village area. Even the town is super safe to walk around and locals are always helpful. ATMs are in the city as everything is paid by cash. Food at the lodge is good and always fresh, we had dinner there every day for the 2 weeks we ended up staying. Always local and different types of fish, prawn, octopus and sea food curries with rice or chapati. Beverages with a good price and always cold. Musa can organize anything you wish to do on the island! The rooms are cleaned daily and bedding is changed. All the lodges have a terrace and there is chilling area at the beach and the garden. Hot shower and wifi is a major plus. You can get coffee and tea whenever you want and the filtered water is always full. The rooms have working fans above the beds and clean bathrooms. Rooms are a good size and have proper beds. Oh and the airport pick up is included in the price! Thank you for everything 💜 Same as pretty much everywhere in the islands there are occasional powerouts. Luckily they don't last long. Shower pressure could be better but nothing I felt that bothered me.
- Nicola (9/5): Fantastic place. We were sorry to leave and would return in a heartbeat. Thanks Musa! - Fabulous location on the beach. Very chilled.
Musa, the owner, was great and always there to help when needed. He sorted out my bag with the airport in Dar es Salaam when it was delayed for a few days.
The room was great, spacious with large European style bathroom. Very clean. We had the cheaper wooden bungalow. It’s slightly further from the beach than the more expensive ones but still only 1 minute walk to the beach.
Whale sharks right off the beach, we could see them from the property. Musa organised a whale shark snorkelling trip for us. The guys who took us were great, going in the water with us to show us exactly where the shark would surface.
Beer was good price at 3000 TSh.
We dived 5 days in Utende. Journey by TukTuk was half an hour, 15000 TSh return. Easy journey. So Juani is a good location to stay for diving as you also only have to pay marine park fee for the diving days.
The staff were mostly helpful. Didn’t speak much English but as Musa was always there or reachable it didn’t matter.
Other reviews talk about too many mosquitos and sand flies. That wasn’t our experience at all. You always get a few of those but we only had a few bites in one week and the sea breeze pretty well kept them away. Food was adequate but could easily be improved. Breakfast comprised lovely fruit (mango, banana, pineapple, water melon) and then pancake, toast and eggs. We had omelette which was fine but no vegetables in it. A bit of pepper and onion would make a difference. The toast wasn’t toasted so was just dry bread. Suggest to get a toaster that works. No pepper available and salt was wet. Coffee and tea available but only creamer, no milk. Understandable given the location though. It’s island life and wasn’t a problem but minor things like that could be improved.
Dinner was ok but portions a bit small and quite plain. We mainly ate dinner elsewhere because of that.
It wasn’t a problem for us (the opposite actually) but when you stay in nature like that you have to be prepared to share with the wildlife. We had visits from a large iguana, a huge centipede, a cockroach and a rat. The rat seemed to have a liking for my boyfriend’s handkerchiefs as it stole 2 and nibbled the rest. Best to keep small items in the suitcase or in clothes bags. It was our fault as we had nuts in the room. The rat liked those too. Once we removed them it stopped visiting us.
- Heide (10/5): Exceptional - We had an amazing 6 days stay. here..Mussa the owneris a very nice man, good energy very friendly and always up to help you, and giving sugestion for day trips and aranging them for you
And he is a great chef, we had incredible good lunches and dinners.I can highly recomend to stay here. All the personal are very friendly. Our bungalow was very nice, big bed,big bathroom and with our own terrace with great viwe to the garden and the sea.
- Berend (9/5): Fantastic - The owner is a wonderful and hilarious guy
- Luisa (1/5): Bad - Nice location at the beach (has potential) Bed full of dead insects, bath room not cleaned (bathing suit and empty shampoos and soaps of other people still in there), mosquito net with huge holes, hammocks not usable because of holes. They offered us another room instead of the first one because of the insects, but that room had the bed full of ants and no light in the bath room. We therefore stayed in the room, asked for new bed sheets and did the bed again ourselves. The manager not even once apologized and was very arrogant and rude. After hard negotiations, she gave us a tiny discount and another room later, but the first night was not even worth a cent and at least a simple sorry can be expected. Never met a manager so rude in my life and I have stayed in many locations. For the price the accommodation has and even for any price, at least a clean bed sheet and bath room can be expected.
- Georgy (7/5): Good -
- So (9/5): Superb - Best place to stay and relax in Kilindoni as the beach is well kept, beautiful sunset, hammocks and plenty of comfortable and relaxing spaces. Spacious and comfortable bungalows. Feels in harmony with nature. Departure for whale sharks sightings just in front of the lovely bar/restaurant. Highly recommend.
- Samir (7/5): Good - Politeness of staff, especially Mussa and Milka The ocean was full of jelly fish, no swimming. The period of staying was not chosen well.
- Saschavansant (10/5): A perfect getaway on the beautiful island of Mafia - Beautiful location and a perfect staff who are always helping you out! Really nothing!
- Martin (6/5): Pleasant -
- N (7/5): Good -
- Jule (9/5): Perfect location with amazing staff - After reading some of the reviews, I was afraid of the animals inside the bungalows. However, the staff does a really good job on making sure you have as few as in this superb location possible in your room!
The staff was exceptionally friendly, the kitchen chef always treated us to an amazing breakfast.
The location couldn’t be better, swimming before breakfast included.
The offered tours were all organized perfectly, worth every cent!
Mossa gives you a home away from home - if I ever come back to Mafia, this is where I will stay :) If you are really sensitive about insects in your room, this might not be ideal for you. I think the location in the middle of nature makes up for the few cockroaches we saw (and I personally hate them)
- Tom (10/5): Exceptional -
- Laura (7/5): Good -
- Matty (7/5): Overall enjoyed our stay! If you can handle the bugs then I would definitely recommend - Amazing location, the staff were really friendly. The seafood was very nice. Can’t be helped, but we had issues with no water at times. And had many bugs in the room, I guess expected on a small island in beach bungalows.
- Jennifer (9/5): Great place to stay - 2nd time i have stayed here. Great gem of a place, good cost effective place to stay for visiting mafia island, transport from airport was included in the price via booking.com. Breakfast is good and filling and sets you up for the day, free filtered water available all day. Seafood restaurant onsite provides some lovely food. both times I have been eaten alive by mosquitos and sand flies but this is not the fault of the accommodation! Travel to africa and expect some wildlife!
- Francisco (7/5): Good -
- Magdalena (10/5): Great place for holiday - Really nice place with great atmosphere, staff really kind, smiley and helpful in everything. Arrange our trips, transfer and all what we need, great food, amazing beach, beautiful sunsets and area near hotel. Perfect place for reset mind and chill. I really recommend juani beach bungalows, if come back on Mafia island im sure that again choose this place Nothing
- Ceresole (9/5): Superb - Beautiful place and super friendly staff
- Adnane (10/5): Wonderful stay - The host, the location, the hospitality and the positive attitude of Mussa
- Sasha (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful clean bungalows on the beach, great food and amazing helpful staff. We had great time in this place.
- Mauro (8/5): Very good - We spent an entire week at juani. Comfortable bungalow, good dinner with fishes, breakfast with fruits and eggs. Exactly on the beach!!! Moussa was super friendly and able to arrange every kind of activiites for me and my wife. Mosquito net with some holes, the nearby lodge with loud music
- Ann (7/5): Great for sunset views - It's located right at the beach with beautiful sunset views. Unfortunately, this time of the year there was a lot of seaweed (and rubbish) washed up on the shore, it's still pretty though. The outdoor seating area is ideal for a sundowner, beer and soft drinks are sold at good prices. Food served was good.
The staff is really friendly and helpful, you can book activities with Mussa as well.
The room itself is clean, and has a nice seating area in front.
Drinking water, coffee and tea are available free of charge all day long. The bathrooms are dark and a bit dirty and could use some fresh paint. I would recommend adding some hooks and/or shelves in there as well to put your toiletries on. As there was only one power socket in the room which was used for the fan, we had to charge our phones and cameras in the bathroom which wasn't ideal. The mattress is a bit laid through in the middle and especially when sharing the bed as a couple it wasn't really comfortable. Pillows had a weird smell, maybe they need a good wash. Overall, it's ok but considering we paid 60+ USD per night on booking.com, a bit more comfort could be expected. If the bathrooms were nicer I would have given a higher score.
- Helen (10/5): The best bunch of humanity in one place! - Milka and Mohammed and Massoud, and the whole team! Freshly ground coffee would have been better than instant. The 51000tzs addition to our bill was a bit of a surprise as we thought the airport pickup - 5 minute journey - was hotel service. We could have easily picked up a tuk tuk had we known.
- Bronwyn (7/5): Good - Breakfast was awesome; food good and the staff were awesome Lack of AC :)
- Walugembe (8/5): Very good -
- Sandra (5/5): Needs a lot of work - Nice people, good location, nice food (although not many choices if you dont eat seafood), spacious bungalows, affordable great tour with whalesharks No airconditioning! I was there in january and it was very very hot. Only one noisy fan above the bed that was not enough. No hot showers. No water pressure. Toilet did not flush (when I told staff they said to lift the lid each time and flush manually). Not worth the amount I paid at all.
- Pankaj (8/5): Wonderful place to stay. - Wonderful location. And just 10 mins tuk-tuk/cab ride from the airport. The host was great at communication, so it helped informing him about the arrival (he sent a tuk-tuk) and the food in advance. These chaps took care of the whale-shark excursion the next morning, with a boat leaving from right there. Chill place. Would recommend. Good food as well. Nothing as such.
- Mario (8/5): Very good -
- Ricardo (10/5): Superb experience - - Mussa, Juani Beach manager, will provide you diferent choices to do as many activities as the island can offer you. All his contacts will be professional and caring with you.
- Location could not be better, just by the beach.
- Food is not only better than any other around the island but also pricey
- Rooms are local-styled made of palms leaves in some cases Taps and shower water flow not too strong. Anyway not a big deal.
- Susan (9/5): Superb - Wonderful place. I was made to feel very welcome and comfortable from the get go. Bungalow was basic but comfortanle with some nice little touches. Right on the beach. The food was amazing. I saw someone having lobster my first night, said I would love that, and next night I had fresh caught lobster dinner!! And they always had my wine at the table wirhin minutes of sitting down lol. There was a campfire on the beach every night that was a nice way to meet and chat with locals and other travellers. And you can arrange day excursions through Mussa.
I would definitely stay here again. Mussa (owner) and all the staff made you feel like family.
- Manoj (10/5): Excellent Staff, Really laid back, Excellent Location. - Laid back. Staff excellent Hot water
- Manoj (10/5): Laid back, very accommodating - On beach. Laid back. Showers not warm enough
- Margo (8/5): Lovely location on the beach, very friendly staff - Location to beach and airport Nothing it’s Mafia island
- Kobus (8/5): Laid-back stay on the beach with whale shark snorkeling - Located on the beach with friendly staff.
Close to whale shark snorkeling. Cold showers. No hot water. Noisy fan.
- Lena (8/5): Nice place to stay at - Very nice chill out areas, well-maintained, located right next to the beach, water refilling station, delicious food, hammok, bonfire at the beach The internet was often not working, the bathroom could be nicer
- Raziah (8/5): Very good -
- Marcotizzi (10/5): Exceptional - Everything is amazing at Juani! It's not a problem for me, but it should be advised that there's no hot water at the moment (July 23)
- Shose (7/5): Good -
- Luise (10/5): Our stay at Juani was amazing and we could have not wished for another location. Value of money was perfect and only hap - The staff and surroundings were extremely friendly and open. Our room was perfect and simple for our stay on Mafia. The food served was very fresh and always on point.
Another good thing is the location of the property, just at the beach, with beach lounges and activities in case you want to see some more than just being in the hotel.
Since someone is always around you can be sure that all of your belongings are a 100% safe and you can even decide to leave your room open or leave your phones to charge somewhere out. The only thing was that the bathroom had a door but the toilet and shower itself were in two rooms though they didn’t have doors.
- Hannah (2/5): Rats in our room!!! Not worth the money - Right on the beach. Dinner was good and bonfire on first night. Musa was very friendly and nice and tought us some swahili. No WiFi no hot shower beach was very durty couldn't swim. Nothing around at all. Overpriced!!!!!! Spent all our time in hotel along the beach as jambo didn't do food other than breakfast and dinner at 7:30 pm only small selection of cold drinks. Rats in our room(complained about this and got a thanks for letting us know as an answer) bacari was nice when introducing the hotel but once he knew you weren't interested in yours was not friendly.... They give you keys for the room but everyone has a spare anyway...
- Helena (10/5): Excellent spot for a cosy, comfortable, relaxing and delicious stay - We had an amazing stay at Juani beach bungalows. Truly cosy, comfortable, very clean, surrounded by greenery, with direct access to the sea and a super nice walk to the centre of Kilindoni. Food was delicious, staff lovely and Musa himself was an excellent caring and informative host. Most recommended! This was not related to the accommodation but to the trip we organised through the contacts of the accommodation. We would advise all visitors of Mafia island to choose carefully the organiser of the whale shark trip and ensure that they are respectful of whale sharks and the sea, knowleadgeable of the sharks’ behaviour and of the best way to interact with them, and tell tourists what is and isn’t allowed when swimming with them. Chasing sharks with motor boat, stopping right in front of them and making tourists jump right next to them is sadly a rather common practice by some organisers, scaring and at times hurting the animals.
- Neil (10/5): Exceptional - The location is superb with immediate access to the beach and the beginning of any excursions that take your fancy.
The staff are very helpful, fun loving and a great source of local knowledge.
The fresh, locally sourced food was delicious and lovingly presented. It was all great.
- Peter (9/5): Superb - We weren’t the only guests to extend their stay at at these beach bungalows. The rooms are comfy and spacious(although cold water only), and the meals varied and good quality at a reasonable price (TSH20K).
We took the snorkelling trip to Chole Island, Blue Lagoon, plus barbecue on the sandbank - an excellent day out. Our attempt to see the whale sharks failed. In fact on 3 days when we were there they failed to see them. I suspect the success of the trip was over sold, and, unfortunately, the price is the same for a once on a lifetime experience or 3 hours ploughing up and down the waves in a small boat seeing nothing.
- Fsdbr (7/5): Basic services in a nice environmnet with nice staff -
- Gareth (10/5): Exceptional -
- Cherie (7/5): Robinson Crusoe style. - Located right on the beach from where the boats go out for the whale shark trips. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Free hot drinks and filtered drinking water 24hrs self service. There are so many mosquitoes and sandflies in the area, may be not the fault of the accommodation but I wasn’t expecting to get bitten during the day so I hadn’t applied insect repellent before I arrived and was bitten quite badly the first day. They do have insect repellent for guests to use if they don’t have any. Another person was bitten in-spite of applying repellent. you do need to be aware if you are one of those people who gets bitten a lot. As a solo woman traveller I felt very safe.
- Maja (6/5): Pleasant - It's a large room with large bathroom, the location is rural and you step on sand as soon as you leave your building which was lovely. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was pretty much the same every day, but it was enough to fill you up. The beach was lovely, but expect a lot of plastic rubbish. The hotel staff however clean the sand outside the hotel daily. Be also aware that during November-February there are loads of Nomad Jellyfishes which cause very painful burns...it's advisable to swim with a mask and snorkel so that you can see them (they are very beautiful if you keep your distance) there are also hundreds of colorful star fish if you fancy snorkeling. There are a number of things how this hotel could be improved. 3 sun loungers were not enough for the amount of people in the hotel. The only other option was sitting on a chair or on the sand. Due to the rural location and gaps below the door I had a large cockroach running over me in the middle of the night (the mosquito net did not stop it) The cold shower was also barely a trickle and washing long hair took forever. For the price we paid, I expected a far better standard.
- Chahan (4/5): Disappointing -
- Amadea (3/5): Poor -
- Anna (5/5): Passable - There were bedbugs on the rooms
- Mikael (10/5): Awesome place to stay on Mafia! - Fantastic staff, always happy and smiling, and the owner Mussa was super helpful when we arrived with the ferry from the mainland! The location is great, next to a nice beach with no beach sellers harrasing you. They also arrange the whale shark snorkeling tours right from the property at a fair price. Breakfast was super and the overall vibe of other travellers at this hotel was very good with people from all over hanging with each other. This was our favourite hotel during our whole trip in Zanzibar/Tanzania/Mafia and so good that we returned here for an additional night. Nothing to complain about at all
- Gustav (10/5): Exceptional - great place!! kindest staff
- Emmanuel (8/5): Very good -
- Jeannette (10/5): best location for walshark - die Lage und Ruhe waren absolut mega
best place to start the activity with the walesharks. the lodge hs their own people
- Katherine (8/5): Great location on the Beach - Great location right on the beach. Bungalows are basic but well maintained and clean. Bed comfortable with a mosquito net. Staff friendly and welcoming.
- Sevan (10/5): An authentic Tanzanian experience, right in the heart of a local fishing community. I got incredible customer service at - outstanding service, amazingly friendly local residents. Internet service was a little unreliable
- Laura (6/5): I recommend for a stay on the beautiful island of Mafia at low cost, but not for several nights. - The location and the beach are truly breathtaking. I enjoyed the outside facilities and the restaurant - the food was quite expensive but excellent. The staff and the owner are very friendly and always ready to help. The water in the shower was always cold. This is fine for one night, but not for 3. The room was very basic and spartan and there was a lot of noise at night. They had no blankets available, just a sheet, and we were cold so we had to sleep with socks and a sweater.
- James (10/5): Would recommend to anyone, paradise at great value and wonderful vibes - Gorgeous location, stunning sunsets, and the most wonderful staff who couldn’t do enough for us. it was so good we stayed an extra 3 nights! nada
- Jenny (10/5): Highly recommend - The hosts are great, help with organizing tours.
Dinner is great.
- Steph (10/5): Exceptional - Room was great, good bed with nets and clean
bathroom. Food was really good and everyone
working there is so friendly and helpful. Wish I
stayed here not Ibiza inn as so much better! Would be good to have dorms to keep
costs down as this is missing on Mafia island!
- Viviana (9/5): Superb - Moussa and his staff are super friendly, always available to support and to make you feel home far from home. The location is wonderful and a perfect spot to enjoy a sunset walk or a drink. Food is also great, so we will definitely consider coming back!
