Guest Reviews
- Ilia (3/5): Too backpacking - The only good thing was the price. On the one hand, it's hard to complain at this price, but... The host barely speaks English.
Poor room equipment, very uncomfortable and dirty shower (and only one for all rooms).
They offer tours at inflated prices, it is better to find another guides.
Lack of normal restaurants nearby.
The host promises to meet me at the bus station but didn't answer the phone and was late.
- Jiří (10/5): Exceptional - Really nice hostel! Its affordable, good location and awesome hosts. Can totally recommend!
- Stoppel (8/5): Very good - No wifi at that time
- Nina (7/5): Good - Cute family and very helpful with questions Beds are a bit small for 2 people. No WiFi.
The minute you walk inside the garden someone will try to sell you a tour to anywhere. Was too overwhelming.
No backpackers vibe - more like a guesthouse with mostly private rooms
- פאנק (10/5): Best in bahir dar - Peter helpped me with everything I needed. From arriving the hostel from the airport and to booking some nice trips around bahir dar. The whole crew members were really nice for me and weren’t say no for anything I asked them for.
The place is well clean and there’s hot water in the showers.
- Jason (7/5): Nice for a day or 2. - Small and simple room around a courtyard. Gated and safe area. Good mosquito netting. No wifi, simple shared bathroom, and was being touted to purchase tour packages from the very first second.
- Saberahmed91 (9/5): Superb - Great location where you have easy access to the main square and bus station. Not far from markets and the staff and owner Peter is extremely helpful. The atmosphere of the place was tranquil and I found the toilets and washrooms to be well maintained. I felt safe and would recommend it to anyone who wants to stay in a hostel. Some mosquitos nets need a change as some had some holes but honestly an easy fix
- Petr (7/5): Good - As the name suggests, this hotel caters to backpackers. The price reflects the basic facilities, such as shared toilets and showers outside the rooms. However, everything was clean, including the rooms, which is a big plus. The mosquito net was excellent and much appreciated.
The hotel owners are reliable and organize excursions, even if the budget sometimes doesn’t quite align with typical backpacker expectations. That said, I thoroughly enjoyed the trips to the Blue Nile Falls and the monasteries on Lake Tana. While the coffee plantation part of the tour turned out to be just a single coffee plant, the overall experience was pleasant. The trip cost $165, and I felt it was worth it. The transportation arrangement from Bahir Dar to Lalibela was less ideal. After some bargaining, I paid $50, only to find myself in an overcrowded minibus. Later, I learned that the price was roughly five times what locals typically pay. On the bright side, the hotel redeemed itself by securing a cheaper flight ticket for me compared to the online price.
- Robin (10/5): If you are in Bahir Dar, go to Bahir Dar Backpackers. - The guys from Bahir Dar Backpackers are super friendly and always willing to help. Thanks again for the great tour on lake tana and to the nile falls - the money was absolutely worth it.
- Rofe (9/5): Superb -
- Mariusz (10/5): Home Away from Home in Bahir Dar - Bahir Dar Backpacker is an absolute gem for travelers seeking a welcoming and laid-back atmosphere in Bahir Dar. Piter, the host, goes above and beyond to ensure every guest feels at home. His friendly and approachable nature makes it easy to ask for tips about local attractions, and he’s always happy to share insights about Ethiopian culture.
The hostel itself is clean, comfortable, and perfectly located, making it an excellent base for exploring the stunning Lake Tana and Blue Nile Falls. Whether you’re looking to relax in the cozy common area or embark on adventures, Bahir Dar Backpacker has everything you need. Highly recommended for budget travelers and anyone who values warm hospitality!
- Obsidian (10/5): Exceptional -
- Obsidian (10/5): Quiet place in Bahir Dar - I loved the bathroom! It's really big and has hot water
Peter, the owner, was helpful
It's quite comfy
I stayed three nights and slept well in all three, thanks (in part) for the mosquito nets.
- Nura (3/5): Poor -
- Martin (8/5): Very good - Staff just amazing, friendly, caring, welcoming. Nice place to stay, great value. Highly recommend. The backpackers organized a boat tpur to visit the monastries and this was totally tourist trap and rip off. Told visit 3 monastries, in the end just visit 1 which was u der construction, only tourist things to buy there. Absolutly rip off and nobody wanted to be responsible for that.
- Sam (9/5): A relaxing spot - A great location. Quiet and calm. Comfortable and cool during the warm days. Room is a little warm in the evening. But fine with a fan
- Bode (7/5): Affordable, relatively clean hostel. Helpful host with tours etc. - Comfortable bed, clean but basic amenities. Clean toilet and shower rooms. The floor under the bed was quite dirty. Bed needs to be moved and cleaned like rest of room.
- כאהן (10/5): Exceptional - Peter the owner of the hostel is the best guy, he was super helpful with everything we needed. The hostel is comfortable and in a good location in the city. We had a great time.

- Ofry (10/5): Exceptional - It was such a nice experience to stay in BahirDar backpackers! The hostel is really calm and clean, the facilities are good and there is a nice kitchen to cook for yourself.
Besides that, Peter the manager is a truly LEGEND! Very positive and welcoming, he speak English fluently and knows a lot about activities in the city.
He helped us arrange tour in lake Tana, rent bikes and even to make a birthday party to one of our friends :)
I recommend this place with all my heart, enjoy!
- Talynomade (9/5): Superb - Good user friendliness spacious rooms super clean and well secured. lack of cooking equipment only an electric hobHard to find because it's registered under two different street names.
- Leonie (10/5): Exceptional - Peter was really nice, he helped me organizing a lot. He even picked me up at the bus station, gave me a lot of recommendations, organized everything, helped me getting the next bus and was always there to help or talk.He even managed to change money for me. - Isabelle (10/5): Exceptional - Wonderful place, certainly one of the best in Ethiopia. Everything is super clean (even the cute puppy is regularly washed!). The rooms are tidy and comfortable. The place is quite central, but quiet at night. Hot water 24 hours. The courtyard is very pleasant with shade and outside sitting. You'll find everything you need in the kitchen, including free coffee. Peter is a very nice person, very helpful. He knows a bajaj driver who is always on time, which is quite convenient when you need to take the 4am bus.
- Regina (8/5): Very good - Spacious and clean room. Peter and Cherry picked me up from the bus station. Very friendly and helpful. Especially Cherry the guide took me to many interesting places, I wouldn't have found by myself. He organized a 2 day tour to the Lake Tana with 3 Monasteries and next day to the Blue Nile Waterfall. Both tours were excellent and price was honest. Can highly recommend. Quiet place. Water pressure in the shower was low. It happens in most places in Ethiopia.
- Denton (10/5): Exceptional - Bahir Dar backpackers was extremely comfortable and Peter is very helpful and accomodating. I was also happy to have hot water. Bed nets were slightly dirty.
- Dunn (10/5): Exceptional - I had a lovely time here. Peter and Cherry looked after me really well and I had a very memorable experience. The hostel is clean, cheap, and comfortable. It's located in a quiet area close to the centre. They helped me organise tours to monasteries, the Blue Nile, as well as a trip to the Simean Mountains. Staying here is a no brainer if you're travelling to Bahir Dar. Thanks guys! Nothing.
