Guest Reviews
- Kelly (10/5): Exceptional - We stayed here during our Quilatoa loop hike and it was a perfect place to stay! The room was comfortable and clean. It was very quiet as we were the only guests at the time. The best part was getting to know the hosts Maria and Walter whose families are from the community. They are such lovely, kind people and the dinner and breakfast were delicious. Highly recommend!
- Samuel (10/5): Staying with family - Staying at this hostal was one of the most heartwarming and memorable experiences of our trip. The family who owns it are truly some of the most friendly and hospitable people we’ve ever met. From the moment we arrived, we felt more like cherished guests than just travelers passing through.
Maria, the host, cooked us an incredible chicken soup using chickens from their own farm — it was not only delicious but made with so much care. She also invited us to try marocho con leche, a traditional Ecuadorian treat we had never tasted before, and it was absolutely delicious!
What made this stay truly special were the hours we spent just talking with them — learning about their lives, their culture, and about Ecuador. It felt like being welcomed into someone’s home, not just a place to sleep.
Another amazing touch was that we could choose the time for breakfast, which meant we were perfectly set up for the next day, ready to leave exactly when we needed to. That kind of flexibility and thoughtfulness made all the difference.
For anyone far from home and missing the warmth of family, this is the place to come. They treat you like one of their own. On top of all that, the hostal itself was very clean, cozy, and the perfect spot to rest and recharge for the next day’s hike.
We can’t recommend this place enough — it’s more than just accommodation, it’s an experience of true Ecuadorian hospitality. all perfect
- Jessica (10/5): Exceptional - Family running hotel was so kind and accommodating. Great location
- Brian (10/5): Exceptional - The hosts Walter and Maria may be the nicest people in Ecuador. They are so lovely, hardworking, friendly, and helpful. The location is great, just off the trail to Quilotoa so you only need to start walking down hill in the morning. The hostel is very quiet. The food is good with nice big portion sizes. Definitely a good place to stay on the hike!
- Mikhail (8/5): Very good - Host is amazing! Super friendly and does everything to help you! Much appreciated. Dinner and breakfast are super. So, would recommend this place if you decide to stay in this town. Nothing.
- Zeigh (9/5): Superb - The hosts make the place. Without them there's nothing much to it, but they are so sweet and treat you like family. They sat with us for dinner, even though they didn't eat, just to chat.
My diet is restricted and they lovingly catered my meals according to what I could and could not eat. The room was a bit cold at night (temperature-wise), the shower did not have hot water, and the wifi signal was very weak.
The ad said they had a restaurant that served African food, which was what made me choose it, but apparently booking.com made a mistake and it was supposed to say American food.. (But to give you an.Idea how sweet the host is, when the woman found out that i was expecting African food, she went on google to look up recipes for african food to make me, which I told her not to bother doing, but still.)
- Kornelije (10/5): Exceptional - An excellent place to stay in Chugchilán, run by a lovely local family who will ensure you have the best experience. The accommodation offers great value for the money. Nothing at this price point.
- Max (10/5): Exceptional - I stayed here for one night whilst on the Quilotoa Loop, and had a brilliant time. The family are lovely, really kind, and the food and drink was excellent too.
- Michael (10/5): Almost like a home stay. - If you are looking for more than a comfy bed and a hot shower, this is the place for you. Maria and her family made us feel very much at home. They even dried our shoes and cloth. Her cooking was delicious. Almost like a home stay.
- Peter (10/5): Exceptional - I do like absolutely everything about this hostal it is 10/10 without any doubts.i couldnt imagine better welcoming and staying.Walter Maria and the whole family are just exceptional they will accomodate you to a very high standarde and make you feel like a family member.beds pillows are super comfy and douve and 2 blankets keeps you warm on a chilly nights.breakfast and dinner included in price which make the value even better and local food is just delicious.will definitely come back.mucias gracias walter y Maria hasta luego🤗🤗🤗
- Pechler (10/5): Exceptional - The family running this was so nice and the meals they made were delicious.

If you are on the Kilotoa hike don't forget to ask for the delicious sandwiches
- Ethan (10/5): The lovely family welcomed us in as one of their own, the best people we’ve come across. They served us breakfast and di - Based in a beautiful location, surrounded by gorgeous views. Nothing - perfect :)
- Gerardo (10/5): I highly recommend Backpacker’s. It is an excellent value & you wont find kinder hosts in Ecuador ❤ - Maria & her husband Walter are very kind, generous people. Maria prepared my breakfast & dinner each day & ensured that everything was to my liking. They also run a tienda if you are short of needed supplies or medicines. My single room was large & well equipped. The WiFi never dropped & was very strong. Backpacker’s is very close to a trail to quilotoa. Alternatively, a bus departs at 9 am & stops directly in front of backpacker’s. I highly recommend Backpacker’s hostel. It’s an excellent value with love and care mixed in. Everything was perfect!
- Lassila (10/5): Exceptional - Maria and her family are such kind and warmhearted people and made sure us guests were comfortable and had everything we needed. Felt like staying with family, so lovely. Definitely recommend. Thank you for everything!
- Alexandra (10/5): Exceptional - Walter and Narcisa were so kind to us! It felt more like a home stay than a hostal. They even arranged a special breakfast for my husbands birthday! I would absolutely recommend this hostal to anyone! The shower was hot, the beds were comfortable, and the food was delicious. There is also a lovely patio space upstairs.
- Birte (9/5): Superb -
- Evi (10/5): Exceptional - María and her family welcomed me very nicely to their hostal. It really felt like home. They served very good and a lot food, I could take my rest and could relax very well. The rooms are cozy. The family even has a little shop, where I could buy snacks for the day. I highly recommend staying with María and her family in their hostel.
- Will (10/5): Exceptional -
- Livia (9/5): Superb - It is a new, small family owned hostel, so don't expect a big common chill area like in the more known hostels, but very friendly owners, a lot of good food (the most food I had on the whole trek!), hot shower. It was a wholesome experience.
- Pascal (9/5): Very friendly owner - Very friendly and helpful owner
You can decide when to take breakfast for an early hiking start
- Andrea (10/5): Exceptional - This is one of the best hostels i ve stayed. Is like being home because everything is just perfect and the owners are very warm and helpful and make you feel a member of the family Is in perfect position for hiking the Quilotoa loop and the dinner and breakfast are very good. Wonderful family and very comfortable place! Don't miss it!
- Nadine (10/5): Amazing stay in ecuador! - If we could, we would give even more points! It was sooo nice with maria & walter! They are super amazing. Its kind of a homestay with privacy. They do amazing cooking, they take care about you, they give you everything what you need! We would come again everytime. We really appreciated the stay! Thank you so much maria & walter!
- Charlotte (10/5): Great value - The owners are the nicest people in the world who will give you an authentic experience. It was their dream to open a hostal and meet other people with other cultures, so they did this at an older age and combine 4 jobs to pay for it...
The facilities are basic but all clean and worthwile the price. Our breakfast was one of the best so far in Ecuador. The lunch box we asked was even more amazing (a big box with fried rice, omelet, vegetables,...).
There is a little rooftop terrace where you can enjoy the sun and the view over the mountains.
- Pauline (10/5): Come here for a local experience! - If you want a local experience with super friendly hosts then this is the place to stay! Maria and Walter make you feel like part of the family and are always available for any help you might need. It has only been a month and half they opened the hostal and are open to ideas to be the best they can be.
- Ewan (10/5): 10/10 you won’t be disappointed - The room was a lovely, spacious and comfortable so was great value for money. The main attraction of this hostel however and what sets it apart from other hostels is the people who work there. They will make an incredible effort to make you feel welcome and part of their wonderful family. Maria is also an excellent cook so you will receive a lovely breakfast and dinner and will make you a packed lunch for the next day on request. I couldn’t recommend this hostel more to anyone looking for an authentic and wholesome stay with some lovely people.
- Jia (9/5): Great homely stay - Maria was a very welcoming hostess, her family is very friendly and gives you a nice sense of comfort. Food is simple and traditional but good. Free water available to fill your bottle. Good value in Chugchilan for a private room. The room is quite spacious and the beds and pillows very comfortable. Plenty of blankets to keep you warm. They're also constructing a nice terrace with a good view. Water in the shower could be warmer (not cold by any means but it is one of those instant electric showers so it is to be expected).
- Bas (10/5): Lovely stay with super kind hosts - Maria and Walter were the kindest hosts you could ask for. They did everything within their power to make you feel welcome and comfortable.
If you have specific wishes for breakfast or dinner, they will see to it that your wishes are met. On top of that, it was delicious!
The room was basic, but great value for your money.
There is a rooftop terrace (under construction), with a nice view over the city. Additionally they have a shop in which you can buy pretty much anything.
