Guest Reviews
- Madeleine (9/5): Peaceful Retreat on Pacific Coast - If you’re looking for a serene, tranquil getaway where you can immerse yourself in nature, Ecohotel Rio Mar Mecana is the perfect place. My best friend and I (two women traveling from the United States) stayed here as a relaxing retreat between city visits in Colombia, and it exceeded all of our expectations.
The setting is pure magic—nestled right by a peaceful river and just a short, beautiful 3-minute walk to the beach. The ecohotel gave us the best of both worlds: the soothing sounds of the river and the soft ocean breeze. We felt deeply connected to nature here, able to truly breathe and unwind.
Before our trip, the staff provided detailed and helpful information to make sure we were prepared. They even recommended an amazing tour, which turned out to be one of the highlights of our visit. Once we arrived, the kindness and hospitality of the staff stood out above all else. They walked us anywhere we needed to go, helping us feel safe, comfortable, and completely at home. Their warmth and care made the experience unforgettable.
The accommodations were rustic yet cozy, providing everything we needed: a comfortable bed, fresh towels, mosquito nets, and even a porch hammock to enjoy the sounds of the jungle. It was the perfect balance of simplicity and comfort, allowing us to fully embrace the natural surroundings.
We couldn’t recommend Ecohotel Rio Mar Mecana more for anyone seeking a peaceful escape, whether you’re looking to reconnect with nature, unwind, or experience a more serene side of Colombia. This place is a true gem, and we left feeling refreshed, grateful, and so at peace.
- Shanell (9/5): A nature lovers paradise - We had an incredible stay at EcoHotel Riomar. Laura and her team are from the community, have deep love for the area, and create a warm and inviting experience. We ate most of our meals with the EcoHotel and enjoyed over 6 species of delicious fish, local vegetables, and fresh squeezed juices at every meal. Mecana beach is absolutely beautiful - we went on long walks and played in the waves everyday, we went tubing down the river, Laura set us up with a bird guide to take us in the jungle and visit a Harpy Eagle nest, and we also went kayaking through the mangroves! Laura also offers trips to a waterfall, snorkeling, and whale watching (in the right season). Laura worked as a veterinarian for many years in Bahía Solano and is very passionate and knowledgable about the environment and wildlife. She is working with the community in Mecana to help control the population of dogs and cats. This is more of a things to know vs what we didn’t like:
-the climate is intense, it was very hot and humid, stay hydrated, be prepared for rain and mud, if you are going on a jungle trek cover up the mosquitos bite and the plants itch
-the cabin we stayed in (the most affordable) was very rustic, we made friends with visiting geckos and bats. The showers are cold and refreshing.
-the local community is vibrant and fun, they enjoy their music! We had ear plugs at night to help drown out the festivities and dogs.
-Laura understands a lot of English, but it would be best if you understand Spanish or have a way to translate.
-Bring cash. Communicate to Laura via WhatsApp before you arrive about the total cost of your stay, transport, meals, excursions/guides, bring extra for beer and come prepared to pay for everything with cash. There is a tourist tax you pay upon entering Bahía Solano at the airport as well.
- Todd (10/5): An Absolute Once in a Lifetime Gem. Unplug and Relax. - Where do I start? The property was up the coast from Bahía Solano on Mecana Beach. A remote and beautiful part of the Pacific Coast. I didn't like the hotel I had originally booked so I quickly packed up and made this reservation last minute.
I didn't know I'd have to take a boat from Bahía Solano (Mutis) to get there (I didn't read closely enough) but the owner Laura quickly arranged to have us picked up at the dock and we were sitting eating fresh fish and drinking cold beer after a short (20 minute) boat ride.
This place was magical, both because of the setting but also largely due to Laura's energy and passion for the property. She is a warm, caring and accepting person and I feel lucky that we got to meet her and stay at her ecohotel.
The food was delicious, fresh fish every day and everything was made in house. The place was perfect and just two minutes walk through the trees to the spectacular and peaceful beach.
If you're the kind of traveller who needs air conditioning, sterilized rooms or you are high maintenance in any way I would say that this property is probably not for you.
If you're like me and love to be close to nature and want to unplug and enjoy then don't hesitate to book here. I would go back tomorrow if I could! I'd prefer to use this section as a "things to know" rather than a "dislike" section.
The property is only accessible by boat so make arrangements with the property for your arrival. It says this in the listing but I missed it!
Bring enough cash to pay for your stay. They are not able to process credit cards as of this review but perhaps this will be different in the future. There is no ATM once you leave the mainland.
Not a big issue for me but the shower is cold water only. I found it very refreshing!
There are no shops once you have left the mainland so pack all essentials like snacks, sunscreen and bug spray.
The WIFI didn't quite reach our cabin but was available in the common areas. I wasn't there to stare at my phone so this didn't bother me at all.
Enjoy this gorgeous property. If I could give it more stars I would.
Thank you Laura for an amazing stay!
- Matthew (10/5): Amazing place - I had an absolutely amazing stay at ecohotel riomar mecana. The cabin was very nice, spacious with a very comfortable bed + large mosquito net and a terrace area at the front with a hammock to relax in! The food was really nice with some good variety. Drinks always available at the bar. Mecana beach itself is picturesque and very quiet. Most of the time I had the beach to myself.
I came to the area mostly to look for wildlife and trekking tours were arranged by the hotel with two local guides antonio and chicho. We spent hours walking around the long trails in the jungle just behind the hotel. It was great fun and the guides were brilliant.
The hospitality of Laura the hotel owner was outstanding, she helped me to get boats to and from the hotel (it is a very short and fun boat ride from bahia solana to the beach) and assisted with everything I needed during my stay.
I really loved my stay here and am planning to return again next year The fact that I didn't state I few more days longer!
