- Harrison (10/5): - Very unique place! We only needed somewhere to stay for one night on our trip from Adelaide to Melbourne and are glad we stumbled upon this hidden gem. Bob and Shelby were very welcoming. The decor is so interesting, overall good experience. Thanks for having us!
- LYNELLE (8/5): Great location when traveling from Victoria to South Australia. - Bob was an outstanding host. Very friendly, a great conversationalist, excellent sense of humor! Bob has done a great job renovating and updating the facilities to provide a welcoming environment. The lack of an en-suite was a surprise. Fish and chips were fantastic, chicken parma was undercooked.
- Stephanie (10/5): -
- Graham (1/5): the room is small not real clean and the pictures on the website don't match up with the rwal room - they state reception is opened from 2 pm to 10pm . we arrived at 8.00pm an it was closed and we called after hour number at it took them 45m to call back
- Jason (8/5): - The hotel is an iconic old hotel with that eccentric feel only a good hotel can create. Bob was great and more than accomodating. And the food downstairs was typical country pub size servings The only negative was the bed was a little hard for my back issues. I am sure some will like it harder like that, but it was not good for me.
- Abraham (10/5): -
- Hilary (10/5): Brilliant. Amazing decor and friendly staff. Good food and fantastic atmosphere. -
- Nova (9/5): -
- Arvind (1/5): Bad experience with staff - Nothing There was one Toilet for all those staying at the hotel.
- Emily (10/5): Brilliant spot! Will stay here every time now! - Beautifully renovated, decorated with passion and style, attention to detail was amazing!
Like an art deco vintage hotel meets Hard Rock Cafe. So much amazing memorabilia! Super clean and fresh AND dog friendly! We felt so welcomed! Nothing
- Damien (9/5): - Great!
- Kylie (8/5): It’s another world. Very hospitable & well- worth the visit. Just take headphones or ear plugs for sleeping. - Artistically appeasing, the owner has done a brilliant job of creating an experience. The noise from the trucks at night. But take some noise-cancelling headphones and you’re right mate!
- Robyn (8/5): Loved the hotel, loved the quirkiness about it. Would stay there again for sure! - Bob & Shelby made you feel very welcome.Loved the very quirky feel about the pub. Quite retro and vintage. Maybe the bedroom was a bit tight with 2 x king single beds in!
- Roslyn (7/5): -
- Sally (9/5): - Very friendly and felt safe. Some rooms a little way from the bathrooms
- Jamie (8/5): We would stay at the Commercial again. Such a good, honest country pub. - The pub is awesome. You can see the effort Bob has gone to in the themes, character, facilities. WE stayed in the "Music" room. It was really cool. Unfortunately the bed didn't help us get a good sleep, important for cross state driving. The Commercial Hotel is a credit to Bob and his Sister. It is a great country pub, friendly, basic, clean and the meals were a good size, not overly big like you get in the city. We appreciated the dunnies! Nicely done and top cleanliness. Thanks Bob! Just the bed. It was hard. Made me remember my nights sleeping on a steel deck.

But no, absolutely beautiful beds shower cleanest hotel so far, so anybody going through Kaniva stay there you will be surprised. The shower covers your whole body awesome 👌 👏 👍. Paul Faulkner P.S. free breakfast 😋 No comment here.
- Kim (9/5): Easy and cruisey local vibe. Shelby a hit! - Easy check in and fun to stay. Locals a hoot!
- Kristy (8/5): Fun place, eclectic! Bob is a great host. -
- Annette (10/5): Great accommodation & meals, beautiful old hotel. Great - Old hotel decorated with lots of memorabilia. Toilet & bathrooms beautifully done. Room very comfortable. We ate dinner at the hotel and had delicious meals. All good.
- Emma (10/5): A beautifully restored art-deco pub with spotless facilities, comfy rooms, and welcoming atmosphere - A Wonderful Find in Kaniva
The Commercial Hotel is a beautifully restored art-deco pub that’s full of character, with interesting artwork and memorabilia throughout. Our room (the Music Room) was comfortable, unique, and had everything we needed, while the communal bathrooms were spotless and recently renovated. The small kitchen was handy for a quick coffee or breakfast, and the VIP lounge with its fireplace was a great place to relax after a long drive.
We enjoyed a good meal in the bar and appreciated the friendly atmosphere created by Bob (and Shelby) — it really feels part of the local community. A great option whether you’re staying in the area or just passing through, and we’d happily stop here again on our next road trip Having to leave!
- Joe (10/5): I would stay again if the situation came again and I totally would recommend the Commercial Hotel to anyone - Neat, tidy, very hospitable, and eclectic. The host was amazing. He showed us around, was eager to help and a genuine nice man. The food was great. Perfect place to stay. There was nothing I didn’t like. I loved everything

- Akiko (10/5): Special classic Aussie hotel experience - The owner Bob was so friendly and funny. We loved his good humour and had a great time chatting with him and other locals/ travellers over beers and nice meals at the pub downstairs. The whole hotel was spotless and Bob’s attention to the detail for decoration and furniture was impressive. Just a stopover to Adelaide became such a memorable place. Thank you Bob! Shelby the dog was way too cute. Not fair
- Ben (8/5): Fun character pub stay with Bob and Shelby the dog - Character stay at this eclectically renovated pub. Bob and Shelby the dog live and run this place so it’s almost a hosted stay. Classic inn for the weary traveler. Have a meal in the front bar then retire to the parlour upstairs for a nightcap. Note shared bathroom and toilet.
- Wendy (10/5): Exceptional - Beautifully decorated. Quirky. So much to look at. Very comfortable. Loved the lounge - check out the 1897 Boys Own Annual. The free breakfast was appreciated. Bob the owner very friendly and helpful. It was all good.
- Julie (1/5): Bad - The breakfast was help your self which was every room and there was 4 bits of bread for all of the rooms so we decided not to eat any so others could have it. We booked a suite so we thought it had a bathroom but it had a shared bathroom way down the hallway
- Harris (10/5): Exceptional - Good food, good fun and good value - genuine country hospitality...thanks Bob
- Michelle (8/5): Very good - The pub accommodation is unique and authentic. It is so quirky, friendly, fun and comfortable. The pool tables and old school music disc player were great. The attention to detail to create a truly unique experience is fantastic. In a wonderful tiny Victorian town.

- Monse (10/5): Nice vibe, cool style, welcoming and Bob, the owner was really friendly - Very cool style, the owner and his dog were really welcoming. Nice spot to spend the night when traveling from Adelaide to Melbourne. A bit noisy because is in a Main Street but they provided ear plugs and honestly I slept like a baby!
- Katie (8/5): Personality in spades! - The place is a treasure trove of weird and wonderful trinkets. What this place has is personality in spades. The owner is very welcoming and makes you feel almost like a local. A bedside light would have been a good added touch.
- Alvin (3/5): Poor - Nicely redecorated. Good air-conditioning. Constant traffic noise. Separated toilet facilities. Downstairs bar noise.
Cost.
- Linda (8/5): Very good - The historical aspect of the old hotel with all the antiques.
All the rooms are themed.
Bob the owner was very pleasant and bent over backwards to ensure a pleasant stay Breakfast was not worth the money
- Mark (8/5): Pleasant stay, friendly host. - Location and host.
- Jennifer (9/5): Superb -
- Gouldthorp (10/5): Exceptional -
- William (8/5): Very good -
- David (7/5): Good - Breakfast was average. The position on the main road is noisy throughout the night.
- Denise (10/5): Exceptional - Everything. Made to feel so welcome and full of amazing collections of everything so interesting and fascinating. Locals really friendly as well
- Ian (8/5): A fantastic surprise - The host and his dog. The eclectic decoration. The food. An old fashioned hotel, with a twist.
- Manfield (7/5): Good -
- Julie (8/5): Very good -
- Heather (8/5): Loved our stay and would stay there again! - loved the decor, the staff was really friendly and it was a great stop on the way to Melbourne
- Traceyleigh (8/5): Quirky & Comfortable Stopover at The Commercial Hotel Kaniva - We were just looking for a place to stay overnight on our way to Mount Gambier and decided to give The Commercial Hotel Kaniva a try, despite usually avoiding shared bathrooms. For a one-night stay, it turned out to be a great choice.
Located on the Great Western Highway, halfway between Melbourne and Adelaide, the hotel has been fully renovated with boutique-style accommodation. The themed rooms added a unique touch, and the VIP guest lounge was a nice bonus. The free continental breakfast was basic (cereal, toast, and whatever was in the upstairs kitchen), but it did the job.
The pub itself is packed with memorabilia and quirky decor, making it a fun place to explore. The meals were really lovely—there weren’t a ton of options, but we had a parma, and it was fantastic.
Even if you’re not staying overnight, it’s worth stopping by to check out the interesting collection of items on display. Just note that it only opens from 4pm.
The publican is quite the character, adding to the overall experience. Plus, it's dog-friendly both inside and out. Having to share a bathroom with others but we knew this before we arrived so no real issues.
No TV in bedrooms - there was a lounge upstairs so we were able to utilise this.
Bedrooms a bit too full of unnecessary items and furniture
- Noah (10/5): Exceptional -
- Georgia (10/5): An absolute gem - A unique, beautiful old hotel with decor that brings so much charm and character! We felt so welcomed by Bob & Shelby. A must-stop if you're travelling through to Melbourne/Adelaide Absolutely nothing
- Trevor (9/5): Perfect location and comfortable facilities - Boutique feel and cleanliness all good no problems
- Larissa (9/5): Great place to stop in between Adelaide and Melbourne. - The hotel was great, comfortable room. Be aware that you're right on the main highway and it's noisy from the trucks going past for most of the night.
- Sara (7/5): Good -
- Karren (10/5): Fabulous friendly staff, comfortable and attractive room, the food was absolutely delicious. Highly recommend anyone to - The staff went above and beyond to make me feel welcome.
- Katie (10/5): Exceptional -
- Nikola (10/5): Exceptional -
- Mel (8/5): Very good - Good location, very friendly owner. Rooms and bathroom were clean. It was easy access into the hotel and rooms Included breakfast was fairly minimal but it was a public holiday. The curtains didn't fully cover the windows which isn't an issue except for a toddler getting to bed.
- Polly (8/5): Everything was great! Great location, staff, facilities etc. Only feedback would be to improve the food (breakfast and d - The staff were extremely helpful and friendly!
The hotel was homely and quirky. It was great for our family and dog. It would have been nice to have a bigger variety of for breakfast considering i couldn’t cut the bread that was left out. White, wholemeal, multigrain bread would be good, and some musli or granola and yogurt. Also, a bit bigger dinner menu.
- Susan (7/5): Good -
- Shearer (10/5): A true gem - Bob and Shelby are incredible hosts! Walking into the Commercial Hotel felt like being welcomed into someone's home. Warm welcome, outstanding eclectic decor and meticulously organised treasures and all pristinely clean. Bonus points for not just being dog friendly but dogs genuinely welcomed. 10/10 and we will definitely be back.
- Roger (8/5): Very good -
- Kathy (9/5): Superb -
- Oleg (10/5): Acceptable for a Short Stay! - It’s ok) “Breakfast” 😹
- Michael (8/5): Very good -
- Michael (9/5): Superb -
- John (7/5): Good overnight stay between Adelaide and Melbourne. - A quirky, older style hotel stay. Tons of atmosphere, very genial host (Bob), adequate light breakfast provided, limited range of pub grub in the bar. Little to dislike if your expectations are realistic and you don't mind a shared bathroom.
- Ferdinand (7/5): Unique - Host is ok, very good resto, pub and clean room. Shared bath and toilet
- Bianca (9/5): great staff, clean facilities, good price. - included breakfast, bathroom facilities were nice, staff were friendly, easy parking, room had aircon/heater beds squeaked, road trains were quite loud.
- De (9/5): Superb -
- Karen (10/5): The best pub and publican in Australia. Do yourself a favour! - Bob at the Commercial is the best publican in Australia. From the minute we arrived he was so friendly and helpful, even introducing us to the locals. We felt so welcome and comfortable with every aspect of the accomodation and the pub. I really loved what he has done with the place and I would highly recommend staying here. The trucks are a little noisy, but I would still stay here as just the best.
- Denise (10/5): Very enjoyable - I loved the theme of movies and all the things to look at, it could take so long to look at everything
- Fiona (5/5): Passable - Super clean, quirky and great location Brekki isn't really included. Some ceral and toast available in a shared kitchen
- Garry (7/5): We were just a bit disappointed that the advertising didn't match the facilities we got - We didn't eat breakfast but there was a good kitchen to use to make breakfast - the host was very welcoming - the facilities throughout the hotel were spotlessly clean The Executive Room was advertised as en-suite - it wasn't - we had to go down the hall at the far end of the corridor to use the quite fine shared facilities - but it was not what was advertised and not what we paid for with the room premium - the room was also at the front of the hotel where double b's passed very close by until the wee hours in the morning
- Natalie (10/5): Great atmosphere ! Unique design ! Bob and Shelby are legends :) -
- Gianna (9/5): The best pub stat we’ve ever experienced! - Very quirky but friendly place. Bob the owner is super chilled and allowed us to have our dog Barry in the room. The restaurant downstairs is also delicious and perfect after a long drive. Nothing
- Lyn (8/5): Great! - The ambiance of the property Not sure about no lock on the shower part, but don’t think it’s an issue
- Tim (10/5): Commercial Hotel Kaniva
Timveal1967@outlook.com - The host. The beer. The room was great Nuffink
- Peter (10/5): Exceptional - I was welcomed immediately and made to feel comfortable. Shelby (the pub dog) also welcomed me on my arrival.
The owner was fantastic to deal with and made my stay a great experience.
- Belosevic (8/5): Great halfway accommodation spot between Adelaide and Melbourne. - Fantastic Hotel, very quirky and fun. Bob the owner was very friendly and helpful. Had the family room which was good and felt safe. Great place to stay for a halfway spot between Adelaide and Melbourne. We ate in the bar that night, very convenient! They allow dogs which was great. They provide earplugs as the trucks going past at night are very noisy.
