Guest Reviews
- Ha (10/5): Wonderful experience with a beautiful family and lovely property - Beautiful property and ground. You can tell owners/hosts take pride in it with a lot of effort to maintain. Gabriela, her husbands and two boys went out of their way to make us feel welcome and at home. What a privileged to stay here.
We had our two year old with us and she was in heaven with their dog Sassy and farm animals. We tasted fresh fruits from their farm, saw spectacle owls and beautiful wild birds. Wonderful breakfast and fresh juice made with care by Gab. Experienced the labor of crushing sugar cane and tasting the freshness. Truly enjoyed every minute.
We would have loved to stayed longer if we could. It’s about 20/25 minutes away from La Fortuna but we had a car and plenty of restaurants and options around for a few days. The cabin has everything you need to make a decent meal and the convenience of a grocery store a block away. We miss everything about it already. It’s 20/25 minutes to La Fortuna but if your looking for peace, nature, tranquility and immersing yourself into a life of a Costa Rican, you can’t get more of a personal experience

- Judy (10/5): Costa Rica at its best! - This is an ideal property to stay and immerse yourself. It is a beautiful property with jungle and animals ( so many birds including macaws!!). It is a short drive to La Fortuna and all the activities there. The best part is Gabriela and her family. They are so welcoming, love to include their quests and teach us how they are using their land environmentally. We were provided delicious breakfasts every day! It was difficult to leave. Gracias Gabriela!
Rien
- Michael (10/5): I can’t think of a stay we’ve had anywhere else that we enjoyed as much as Gambas Lodge. - We stayed 3 nights out of a week long trip and by the time we left we wished we would have just spent our whole trip here. Breakfast was amazing every day; traditional Costa Rican food inspired by their farm. We loved the spring fed pool, short trails within the property, and the overall pride that Gabriela and her family put into the property. They’ve done a beautiful job with it. We really enjoyed our time here and hope to come back to visit soon! ¡Gracias a los chicos por las canicas! Nothing
- Joseph (10/5): A cozy, private cottage in a scenic setting. Perfect for staying away from Fortuna’s crowds. - Great location; beautiful house and spring fed pool; breakfasts were delicious and showcased different fresh fruit juices daily. Gabriela and her family couldn’t have been nicer! We wouldn’t have changed anything. It was a brilliant stay.

- Jessica (10/5): Staying at this wonderful accommodation was a major highlight of our trip to Costa Rica and we are going to miss it. - This is an amazing place to stay in the La Fortuna area. It was clean and comfortable for my family of 5 and the host family showed so much warmth and hospitality, feeding us, showing us around their farm, and always coming to find us or texting us if there was wildlife to see, like the breathtaking scarlet macaw that frequents their guava tree. My kids loved the natural pool, and everyone loved Gabriela’s delicious daily breakfasts. They were generous enough that we had leftovers to snack on in the evenings. There is not a single thing we didn’t love about Gambas Lodge.
- adam (10/5): We had the best time at Gambas lodge. Gabriela and her family go above and beyond in every to make your stay incredible. -
- Sohayla (10/5): - Gabriela and her husband are extremely kind and helpful. Their two sons are delightful and their animals are adorable. The house is gorgeous, comfortable, and clean. The swimming pool is beautiful and the area has wonderful food . We loved being there and hope to go back again . Everything was perfect.
- Silvia (10/5): -
- Gregory (10/5): Het verblijf was fantastisch.
- Miquel (10/5): ESTANCIA SUPERCOMODA Y DIDACTICA EN LA GRANJA DE UNA FAMILIA DELICIOSA.
- Kévin.M. (10/5): PARFAIT !
Rien
- Annette (10/5): A wonderful stay in perfect accommodation with generous welcoming hosts. - It was a magical stay. Gabriela and her family were such kind and generous hosts. They taught us so much about the area and their way of life. The lodge was beautiful and clean. The natural pool was amazing. We saw lots of wildlife and really enjoyed the walk the family had built. A truly amazing and unforgettable stay. We hope to be back one day Gabriela! Thank you. Nothing at all.
- Neta (10/5): The cutest little house in a beautiful setting! Loved it! - Everything! The house was cute, comfortable, and well stocked with pots and pans, dishes, microwave, coffee maker, stove top, electric tea pot, tea, coffee. The breakfasts were varied with a different fresh juice every day. The pool is filled with fresh flowing water from a stream and was delightful. The jungle is feet away from your balcony, and there is a little path in a loop. And then there is Gabriela the host and her amazing family. They are so sweet, ready to give advice and answer any questions you might have! They have a cow, a young calf, many chickens, a goat and two kids. Oh, and the cutest little dog Sasi. We asked if we could learn to milk the cows and they made plans the following morning to teach us. In general we couldn’t have been happier and would definitely visit the Gambas Lodge again! Nothing! Everything was great!
- Jens (10/5): The perfect family vacation - The property is beautiful, with gorgeous flowers, fruits and animals… Nothing
- Stephen (10/5): Great stay way from the hustle and bustle of La Fortuna. - Property is about 20 minutes away in a very thoughtfully designed and constructed ADU-like cabana with a shallow swimming pool ingeniously incorporated into an existing watercourse. A friendly and enterprising family rents the cabana on a very impressive small farm that is an admirable effort at small scale, sustainable agriculture and ecosystem restoration. Cabana is in a secluded, naturally landscaped setting separate from the main house with access to a short trail along the creek. Included breakfast is very generous.
- Tatiana (10/5): A truly amazing Costa Rican experience! - The hosts really go above and beyond to make their guests feel right at home. The grounds are beautiful and are a great place to spot birds. The natural pool is wonderfully refreshing and the farm to table breakfast is excellent. Nothing!
- Dawn (10/5): Special place with a familial touch - Gabriela and Minor are the owners of this small family farm with an incredible cabin, that he built. It’s about a half hour from La Fortuna - perfect if you want to visit the town but far enough away that you experience Costa Rica (and not just a tourist town). When you stay with a family host, and not a hotel, you get special experiences like when she made us a plate of fried yucca. Even better, they spent time with us to show us everything about the workings of their farm. They let us work the sugar cane press, which was fun. They even invited us to go to their son’s school for a dance he had that day. We decided to attend, which was a fun and unusual experience for our travels. They were so incredibly kind. They also have a small natural pool which was nice.
While at their place we also went to proyecto asis animal sanctuary (loved the tour there) and that was a 20 min drive. I really don’t have anything negative to say. I guess it’s not for someone who wants to be by the big town. But I really feel like the town is so touristy that I only want small doses of that anyway. Obviously it’s out of the way so you need a rental car.
- Amelia (10/5): If you want the full Costa Rica experience, stay here! Food, nature, experience and relaxation! - Gabriela and her family were so friendly and made our experience feel so special. The breakfast Gabriela made every morning was delicious and was a great welcome to our Costa Rica trip. There was a small swimming area and path that were beautiful. Lots of wildlife with toucans and many more.
- Henry (10/5): Exceptional - Great stay at a great property! Very peaceful! Gabriela is a great host, very friendly and helpful. Will certainly stay here again if we decide to return to Fortuna!! Everything was great!
- Fleming (10/5): Farm Stay Fun & Luxury - Gambas Lodge exceeded our expectations! Many say the La Fortuna area has changed, and is now "too commercial" - stay here at Gambas Lodge for an authentic experience! The hosts truly treated us as if we were friends coming to visit; they could not have been more friendly and accommodating. Gabby welcomed us with a hot appetizer, fried yuka, soon after we arrived, which was a truly kind gesture. The next morning, we learned about their small, sustainable farm, had the opportunity to milk a goat, and gained more knowledge about wildlife. The next day, we ground fresh sugar cane, right off the property, and drank it with lime, delicious! The fresh water pool and porch are ideal, and the space met our needs perfectly. Delicious homemade breakfast was delivered in containers, hot, with many options to choose from, along with fresh fruit and freshly squeezed fruit juices in glass pitchers. They placed fruit on a perch, which made for fantastic bird-watching. The Gambas Tree sits on the property and inspired the name of this accommodation. Each piece of furniture, cabinetry, patio chairs, and the entire home was built by hand, masterfully crafted by your host. We did not cook at the property, but you could, and a grocery store is within walking distance. Canyoning Costa Rica Maquique Adventure is nearby and was also great fun! The only thing I disliked is leaving this beautiful family and property.
- Rmrib (10/5): Exceptional - The place is really beautiful. Everything is new and very comfortable. The Family is amazing, the nicest and friendliest we found in Costa Rica. The kids shared their toys , they made us part of their family for the few days we were there. Our kids joined the farm tasks feeding the cows and the goats. The breakfast was amazing , every day something new to taste , local food, natural juice's, from the farm! It cannot get better than this ! Pura vida! everything was perfect
- Teri (10/5): We felt like we learned a lot about Costa Rican culture but also had space to feel like we were at home. - Our family had an amazing time at Gambas Lodge! We loved that we had a forrest and a farm in our backyard, as well as a pool with clear spring water. Gabriela and her family were the best hosts! Gabriela brought us so much food and fresh juice for breakfast. We really enjoyed practicing our Spanish with her and her family. She was so sweet to have her boys show our kids around the farm and to teach them how to get sugar cane juice. There is a small market within a two minute walk and a few places to eat at the end of their road. 15-20 minute drive into La Fortuna. Gabriela gave us some great recommendations about eating at Restaurant Ross and some things to do. She told us all about how her and her husband are working on making their farm self sustainable. We felt like we got a more authentic Costa Rican experience than staying at a resort. We highly recommend staying here and would love to come back one day! Nothing!
- Aliza (10/5): The exceptional rating of Gambas Lodge is well deserved. - Gambas Lodge is exceptional in every way. The delicious breakfasts, natural spring pool and the comfortable, clean and private cabin were perfect for our stay. Gabriela and her lovely family are warm, welcoming hosts who truly go above and beyond for their guests. Gambas Lodge was a peaceful retreat after the action of La Fortuna. There are supermarkets and restaurants nearby. Grilling by the pool, juicing sugar cane with our hosts, watching the wildlife and interacting with the farm animals were the highlights of our stay. We can't wait to return!
- Israel (10/5): 100% recommend staying with this wonderful family. It's clean, tranquil and memorable. - The family is so kind and welcoming. The lodging is clean, comfortable and well equipped. The fresh homemade breakfast is delicious with fresh juices from local fruits. Gabriela is very happy to help with all your questions and needs. Being an animal lover, our family enjoyed the animals on the property. The hosts are extremely accommodating and attentive. The lodge was constructed by the property owner himself and had all the amenities necessary (air conditioning, hot water, filtered water safe to drink) to have a pleasant stay. The family showed us how to press sugar cane into juice. The surrounding property is also well maintained. There is a fresh spring pool to cool down, drink your morning coffee while enjoying the sounds of the birds. If you want to escape the city life this is the perfect stay. It's quiet, calm and tranquil.
We had a lovely, memorable stay that will never be forgotten. I can not think of anything.
- Patrick (10/5): Our stay at Gambas Lodge in La Fortuna was absolutely wonderful! - Our stay at Gambas Lodge in La Fortuna was absolutely wonderful! From the moment we arrived, Gabriella, our fantastic host, made us feel so welcome. Her kindness, hospitality, and great local recommendations truly made our trip special. She went above and beyond to ensure we had a perfect stay.
The lodge is a tropical oasis—beautiful, clean, and surrounded by lush greenery, making it the ideal place to relax and connect with nature. One of the highlights of our stay was the excellent breakfast—fresh, delicious, and the perfect way to start the day!
The location is peaceful and secluded, yet just a short drive from all the great activities and restaurants in La Fortuna. Since the sun comes up early some more window blinds would be nice
- Alex (10/5): Exceptional -
- Giovanni (10/5): Don't look further, absolutely great! - This place was our highlight in Costa Rica. 100% recommendation with no doubts. Everything was perfect. We are a family with 3 kids (4,2 years and 7 months baby) and stayed for (only) 3 nights. We wanted to stay longer but it was booked out. You will get a very nice made and clean Lodge with no other guests around. It is family owned and they are wonderful people. Absolutely phenomenal with kids with that little organic farm which is not disturbing at all. They could even feed the animals. Also super relaxing without kids, enjoy your own jungle and if you are lucky you can hear monkeys in the early morning. Close to different activities by car within 5-20 min. To Fortuna it is about 20-25min drive with more tourists. Groceries are within 2- 5min by car, as well as some good pizza. The breakfast was included, everyday freshly made and delicious. We had such a great time, watching tucans and other birds from our balcony with jungle view and a fresh coffee in the morning. BBQ at the pool was also great. Lovely Family from the first minute and they give you absolute privacy if you want. Always available for every little need or question also by text.
THANK YOU so much again! Nothing.
- Ranga (10/5): Exceptional - Gabriela was an amazingly wonderful hostess. Brought us delicious home made breakfast every morning. Lovely lodge. Lovely property with animals. Ideal place to stay for a beautiful, and happy experience. I would love to go back, and stay here every time.
- Donna (10/5): AMAZING, worth the visit, highly recommend. - The property is spectacular. The owner built this charming and comfortable cabin at the back of their property where we could enjoy their very private, naturally spring-fed pool, magical when lit up at night. The beds were comfy, kitchen well-equipped. The surroundings were enchanting, nestled in the jungle with a private walking path through the lush trees, winding around their giant gambas tree and little pretty stream. Woke up to a tree of toucans one morning, there were hummingbirds in her flowers daily, and so many other birds at her feeder. Gabriela's daily breakfasts were delicious, different each morning, costa rican dishes with fresh juices from different fruit on her property. They demonstrated their milling of sugar cane and their baby goats visited our kitchen one morning - adorable little rascals! Her family was wonderful, the place so comfortable and safe. We were a great location to all of Arenal sights and attractions. Highly recommend - we would return again! Not a thing
- Josip (10/5): Great hosts and accomodation! - This was exceptional experience which made out trip unforgetable. Accomodation has beautiful rainforest, garden and natural pool. We felt safe and comfortable. If you are lucky enough you can see some tropical birds every morning. House is really cozy and clean
Hosts are on another level and we have never experienced anything like this. They made sure that our needs are met at any moment and we really felt like part of their family. If we ever come to Costa Rica again we will choose this accomodation for sure.
10/10 Nothing, everything was perfect.
- O123p (10/5): Amazing Experience! - Great personal attention from the Gabriella the host, which went way above and beyond to make our stay enjoyable. It was literally a cabin in heaven! The cabin was clean and surrounded by beautiful greenery. Once we entered, we were suprised to see flowers set up for us, as well as decoractions for Christmas and new year. There was a very authentic breakfast the host made for us in the morning. Before we left, the host family surprised us by showing us their cute sloth! The location of the cabin is 15 mins from downtown La Fortuna. But the cabin itself is a bit outside the city, in safe and more secluded location. The host was easily accessible and made sure to throughly explain everything (even the authentic food). The language barrier was not an issue as we used Google translate. We would highly recommend this place to anyone that's interested! We already miss this place. Nothing, everything was perfect!
- Percy (10/5): Exceptional - Peace and clean
- Michaela (10/5): Off the beaten path, lovely cabana immersed in nature. - Home made breakfast from the hosts, immersion in nature, all types of birds flying over our heads and on the feeding platform, amazing natural pool and the kindest family running the cabana, trying to make us feel comfortable all the time. Nothing.
- Martina (10/5): Oasis of peace in the jungle - A beautiful place, warm people, great location right on the edge of the forest where you can watch birds. The breakfast was delicious.
There is a little sloth in the garden and we were able to press sugar cane ourselves with the family. Our wishes were read from our lips.
The pool is filled with water from its own spring. The house is clean and made with love.
La Fortuna can be reached in 20 minutes by car. Nothing.
- Robinvb (10/5): Amazing lodge, very comfortable house and beds, beautiful people! - This lodge was the surprise and the highlight of our holiday. What a gem!! The house is beautifully built, by hand by the owner himself. The family is beautiful, authentic and very friendly. They had plenty of time for us, showed us their farm, let us experience making sugar cane juice, feed their baby sloth (wow!!!). I didn't even mention the beautiful natural pool yet! We highly, highly recommend this lodge. We wish we could have stayed longer. @Gabriella and family, thank you so much for giving us this experience at your beautiful farm!! Absolutely nothing. We left with a full load of special memories we will never forget.
- Furrer (10/5): Idyllic Costa Rican setting, lodge with all the modern amenities, and fantastic breakfasts! - I rarely write reviews, but this place deserves 20/10 from start to finish. Seriously. It's a beautiful lodge run by a very kind family. Picture this...you're staying in a lodge with great water pressure, air conditioning, comfortable beds, kitchen, and a pack and play if needed. And it's the middle of beautiful property filled with lush fruit trees, tropical birds, animals (including an adorable orphan sloth!), and a your private natural spring pool. And the owner comes to your door daily with a fresh, homemade, varied breakfast that includes 5-6 costa rican/american dishes, at your specified time while accommodating your dietary needs. They also invited us to make sugarcane juice and yuca cakes with them! And their two young sons brought their toys to the lodge for our kids to play with, generously allowed out kids to pet/feed their goats/cows, and even hold their orphan sloth! The owner also helped us order dinners delivered to the lodge while we swam, helps book activities, and is ready to do anything to make sure you have a wonderful stay. The family even came to wish us goodbye at 6 a.m. (with breakfast!) and gave us a family photo they'd taken of us with a beautiful hair ribbon for my daughter (that she wears every day). They really treat you like family...don't look further, stay there! :) Nothing at all....it's a very special place!
- Katherine (10/5): Lovely, peaceful, place to stay with kids - with absolutely charming hosts - conveniently located for La Fortuna and El - The cabin was lovely, immaculately clean and with a small private spring-fed pool that we all used to cool off regularly. The hosts were charming and went out of their way to make us feel welcome and enjoy our stay. There was spectacular bird life just outside our window thanks to a little platform with fruit on it in the tree opposite the cabin. The host brought delicious Costa Rican breakfasts everyday - with fresh juice from their many different fruit trees - in such generous portions, we often used the leftovers for dinner as well! It was a great place to stay with our children. We wish we could have stayed longer!
- Mamta (10/5): Absolutely amazing, wonderful and a hidden gem in nature. - We had the most incredible stay! Nestled amidst lush greenery, this place is a true haven for nature lovers. Waking up to the sound of birds chirping and the sight of towering trees was an absolute treat.
Every morning, we were greeted with an excellent breakfast spread, lovingly prepared by our gracious hosts. The freshly squeezed fruit juice was a highlight – so refreshing and delicious!
The host couple went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable. Their warmth and hospitality made us feel right at home. They provided great tips for local activities and even arranged for making the sugarcane juice.
Our kids had the time of their lives, exploring the beautiful surroundings and playing in the spacious garden. They especially loved the little nature trails around the property.
Overall, this stay was magical. If you're looking for a serene getaway with amazing hosts and fantastic breakfast, look no further! We can't wait to return.
- Manfred (10/5): Soooo great, friendly and beautiful! - It was super clean, beautifully constructed house by the owner , who did everything himself. The house itself is very well equipped and located in a beautiful, quiet location in the forest with a natural pool and animals around. The owners are so sweet, really attentive and prepare homemade breakfast for you in the morning! They showed us a baby sloth, their animals and a lot of fruits and other things to try - such a friendly and great family! Would definitely go back!
- Irena (10/5): A life time experience - The place was spotless. A little oasis with animals and natural pool. Grabriela and her family were most welcoming. She brought us not only delicious breakfast but fresh milk and fruits from their farm. And there was sloth baby!
- Suchinski (10/5): Exceptional - Loved how attentative Gabriela was amazing. She brought us an amazing breakfast as well as a local Costa Rican dish! Her and her family were kind and super helpful even with the language barrier. The best part of the stay, in my opinion, was your own personal natural swimming spring. It was quite with a few hiking trails on the property. It's definitely a place to stay if you want to experience authentic Costa Rica! The only downside is that you have to pay in cash because they do not accept credit cards. When I tried to use PayPal, it said they were not set up yet. The location is about 30-40 minutes away from attractions.
- Michel (9/5): Superb - Great friendly and helpful host. Definitely recommend the stay.
- Pet (10/5): Beautiful place full of nature and great people. - The place was so beautiful, and full of nature. We saw an ant eater, iguana, lots of birds, and other animals while walking around their property. The pictures don’t do justice to the property. It’s a magical place. We loved it. The hosts were so kind and super friendly. They let us make our own sugar cane juice and we also fed their cows. It was an amazing experience!
