Guest Reviews
- barbara (8/5): Great location for Hadrian’s Wall walkers - Received a lovely warm welcome from Nick on reception who was very helpful. Hotel itself is lovely in the bar / restaurant areas but the rooms are dated, that said it was very clean and comfortable. The hotel is located right on the Hadrian’s Wall trail which we were walking hence choosing The George. Charlotte on the bar / at breakfast was fab as were all the other staff. Packed lunches on offer for walkers. Rooms a bit dated
- Joseph (9/5): A perfect place to stay on the Hadrian’s Wall trail. Beautiful to sit by the river with a beer after a good day on the t - Lovely restaurant and garden on the river, fun watching the quoits! Bit of a labyrinth inside to find the room.
- Tomas (7/5): -
- Louise (9/5): -
- Kim (9/5): Peaceful, great bed, rested. - Beautiful location, perfect t if hiking walking is your thing, trails everywhere. Staff extremely friendly. Room was very plain, but clean. Adequate, no view, sad given the location.
- Denise (10/5): - Beautiful setting
Evening meal was superb
Room was clean and comfortable
- Richard (6/5): -
- Rachel (10/5): Loves the location near Hadrian’s wall - Absolutely charming location right on the river and a lovely restaurant. It was a little difficult to find my way around the winding hallways
- Sally (9/5): Perfect - Location
Traditional style atmosphere
Friendly staff and helpful Nothing to critique
- Paul (8/5): Would stay again - Location, food, staff pleasant. A little dated in places, but would nit stop me staying again.
- Paul (7/5): -
- Daisy (10/5): -
- Susan (9/5): Overall a lovely stay - Beautiful location right on the Hadrians Wall path. Staff were very friendly. Minor cons were a very low powered shower and unfortunately the fish pie I ordered in the restaurant was one of the worst I’ve ever had. I struggled to find any fish! My husband enjoyed his meal, so maybe a one off.
- Karen (8/5): Excellent small break to visit Hadrian's Wall. - Very good breakfast. Room was a little noisy as we were adjacent to the entrance door. Perfect location for Hadrian's Wall, the bus stops at the George and takes you to and from all of the wall's locations. We would have liked a quiter room
- Chris (4/5): Could be better - Good location for walking Hadrians wall. Excellent food in the evening. We had steak and chips and fish and chips, both cooked perfectly.
The room was spacious and clean and the bed was comfortable. The evening meal was great apart from we when we were shown to our table the waitress tried to squeeze us in a table that was so close the to couple next to us it was impossible to even get in the chair. I explained that it would be impossible to sit at that table and be comfortable. As the rest of the restaurant was nearly empty I pointed at another table for two and said we would sit there instead. We were told that that table was booked so I explained that they could sit any of the other 20 empty tables for two in the restaurant. We were given a dirty look and the waitress walked off. For the rest of the evening no one else came into the restaurant so it doesn’t make any sense to squeeze people into tightly packed seats and then lie about other tables being booked.
The bar area before we had food was most unpleasant, around the entire bar were locals sat blocking any access for other people to get to the bar for a drink. When we approached the bar and asked people to move so we could get to the bar we were ignored by the locals and the bar man so we had to resort to shouting over to get attention and then we were grunted at because we had to lean over the locals to get to our drinks on the bar. When we sat down we witnessed several residents of the hotel enter the bar area and then leave because they couldn’t get to the bar. I am all for encouraging locals to use the bar however it is down to the staff to encourage them to leave some space for other customers to get served.
The next morning at breakfast the lady serving was extremely agitated and as soon as we sat down she ran over and said I’m on my own and it’s going to be manic so you need to order straight away. Not even a good morning! I asked if I could have a coffee first and she pointed at the other room and said you can help yourself but I need your food order. This doesn’t make for a very relaxing start to the day.
- Rachel (9/5): Very comfortable & lovely setting - Beautiful location & restaurant/bar overlooking the river Nothing
- nichts -
- Ward (8/5): A lovely pitstop - Comfy bed, good meal and breakfast No bath or room service
- Filippo (10/5): -
- Peter (10/5): -
- Deacon (5/5): - Dinner was great. Breakfast was chaotic with food running out, delayed service and even to the point where no spare bowls were available after asking a member of staff.
The packed lunch was awful - particularly for the price - the core of the lunch is a factory produced sausage roll or cheese and onion pasty.
- Nancy (9/5): -
- Dennis (5/5): -
- Maurice (6/5): Nice staff, beautiful location but annexe was ok - one night was manageable - The location Our room was in an annexe - not the original hotel. The entrance to our building was practical rather than welcoming
Goede kamers.
- Kumi (10/5): Lovely hotel and great location -
- Shelley (9/5): - We stayed two nights after initially booking only one night. The hotel was so friendly and helpful. Sitting by the river each evening was a lovely thing to do after long busy days. The restaurant was great and the hotel location perfect for our visit to Hadrians Wall. A quick trip to Hexham was also not to be missed.
- Debra (8/5): Friendly and helpful staff. Comfortable hotel - Comfortable Hot water ran out at the end of the day with lots of people using it
- David (9/5): Great for Hadrian's Wall walk - Location for doing Hadrians Wall is prefect. Good breakfast You can very clearly hear the people in the next room while in your bedroom
- Chris (10/5): Magical! - Beautiful location and gardens. Amazing food and attentive staff. Room was very comfortable with wonderful views of the river. NA
- Christopher (8/5): Pleasant, well-located hotel - The hotel is in a nice location next to a river, convenient for Hadrian's Wall path walkers. The included breakfast was good. The room was good and the staff were friendly. The hotel changed the included dinner to a voucher that was not enough to cover the dinner that we ordered (excluding drinks), which was not one of the more expensive offerings on the menu. The check-in was a bit chaotic too.
- Claire (9/5): -
- Natalie (6/5): -
- Joseph (6/5): Good could be better. - Nice location excellent garden space. Helpful staff. Long walk to room carrying heavy suitcases up and down stairs through long corridors and many fire doors.
No lift.
- Maureen (8/5): Very comfortable stay - Beautiful location beside the river with excellent beer garden. Great base for exploring Hadrians Wall. The staff were very friendly, efficient and helpful. Quite a lot of recent improvements to the hotel.
- Neil (5/5): Good location and very nice beer garden by the river. Beds uncomfortable, and the place is noisy. - The location is good. The beer garden along the river is very nice. Parking is easy. Attentive staff. Breakfast was disappointing. The beds were very uncomfortable. You could feel the springs through the mattress. Lots of noise in the morning. Plenty of construction going on.
- Cheryl (10/5): -
Hotel vell i decadent
- Margaret (3/5): -
- Luke (8/5): -
- Liz (8/5): Good stop off on the path! - Location on Hadrians wall path The maze of rooms!
- Mohan (8/5): Nice stay, great location snd staff - Great location for Hadrians Wall walk, sat by the river in a quiet village. Staff were friendly , food and ale very good. Bed was a small double
- Bronno (10/5): Very pleasant stay. - Very courteous staff. Clean comfortable room. Good food.
- Helen (9/5): - Lovely hotel with riverside views from bar and restaurant. Nice food with GF options. Friendly staff.
Ideally located if walking Hadrian’s Wall Path.
- Ian Lambert (8/5): - Great older style building that is clearly well placed for Hadrians wall walkers and Chesters fort. Spacious room and very pleasant staff. Breakfast was great! Nothing really, its an older building with bathroom in need of an update!
- Victoria (5/5): Expensive for a very mediocre place - Great location
Being able to heat the radiator to our own choice
Good beer Surly disinterested staff
Care home decor in the room
Price/ quality equation
- Steven (8/5): Very good stay in a good location for walking the wall. - Well positioned Hotel in a pretty position alongside the river. Our room was in the main block Dinner was good and the restaurant staff very helpful and friendly and was a generously sized twin room with a shower room.
Excellent and friendly staff in the restaurant which is well positioned overlooking the river. Food was good and service prompt. Breakfast was also good. Packed lunch was terrible!! They should make an effort to make some fresh sandwiches rather than buy a processed sausage roll or pasty from the corner shop.
- MURRAY (9/5): - Reception and restaurent staff were great and friendly. Long walk from reception to bedroom but that is me being very picky.
- Valerie (8/5): -
- Vannuil (10/5): Perfect place to get away for the night we both loved it. - Beautiful hotel, lovely staff & amazing food. Nothing.
- Florian (9/5): -
- Anthony (8/5): -
- Maria (10/5): -
- Tomanek121 (10/5): -
- Philip (10/5): A quality experience. Thank you 🙏 - Second time here and it does not disappoint. Fabulous location, brilliant staff, welcoming, friendly and professional throughout, comfortable rooms and excellent food. Would always recommend. Very dog friendly. Local people using the bar and restaurant also very friendly and welcoming. Thank you all Not applicable
- Raphaëlle (10/5): - L'emplacement Le prix
- Bufkino (8/5): Lovely. - The staff are wonderfully kind. The fish and chips from next door were tasty. They let me eat in the pub and provided a plate, cutlery, and sauces. Loved the pub. I'd most definitely stay here again.
- Kevin (8/5): -
- Stephen (10/5): - Very welcoming and great staff
- Dawn (10/5): - A beautiful resort on the Tyne…lovely!
- Peter (9/5): Great value hotel with lovely staff - The hotel was perfect for us - could not have been in a better location and all trhe staff were amazing. We had good food and the staff were so helpful.
- Nick (10/5): - The gentleman at reception made up an ice pack for me as he saw I was a little sore from hiking.
- Franck (9/5): A nice option on Hadrian’s Wall Path - The garden along the river is really enjoyable, the room has a decent size and the staff is nice. The breakfast buffet is a bit poor and you absolutely need earplugs to get a good night’s sleep, you can hear everything from everywhere !
- Kenneth (9/5): -
- Dianne (7/5): -
- Sinah (6/5): It's okay for the money with a nice breakfast - Nice Location, when it is warm you can site outside in the terrace of their restaurant. Breakfast selection was good, we had the eggs benedict which was really nice. Not a very nice view from our room, straight onto the parking lot. The floor outside our room was super squeaky so every time someone walked past it was quite loud and annoying.
- Lucy (9/5): Lovely Hotel - Stunning location, right on the river. Staff were all very friendly & dinner in the restaurant was really good quality. There were 4 x vegan options for dinner but vegan options for breakfast were very limited. Offering beans, mushroooms or avocado on toast would've been good.
- Fitzpatrick (10/5): Stunning location and great value for money - Stunning location and superb Sunday Roast.
- Didier (9/5): -
- Jan (2/5): Feel that hotel was understaffed particularly at breakfast. Management needs to improve. They KNOW how many people are s - Situation Toilet was dirty
Long wait at reception long way from reception
Locked door trying to get in
Breakfast had no pastries
Initially no glasses no cups no plates no bread
- Brazier (6/5): - Good rooms, staff were friendly enough. We couldn't get a table till 8.15PM which isn't acceptable for guests who have nowhere else to eat. Breakfast was extremely slow and average at best.
- Margaret (7/5): Nice hotel - River location
Restaurant Some reception staff were not friendly and felt rushed at breakfast
Tiny tv
- Misha (10/5): Amazing! Would stay again! - Staff were brilliant, went above and beyond to be helpful during our stay! Really difficult to get taxis in the area but nothing to do with the hotel
- Mikaella (4/5): -
- Paul (9/5): I love my mummy - Fantastic location for anyone walking the wall. Superb location right on the river. Great restaurant and breakfast Shower was fantastic as long as the water was on cold. With any heat needed you had to run around to get wet!!
- Brian (9/5): I’ll will plan a return trip as a tourist rather than work next time - Location close to Hexham peace and quiet plenty parking and good food at reasonable prices Can’t think of any negative thoughts apart from not having the time to use all the facilities
- Richard (10/5): An overnight stay at this hotel and could not fault it, the location was ideal. - Ideal location, bar and restaurant were excellent, highly recommend.
- Joy (10/5): Great stay at The George - We loved the location near the river. It's a beautiful building and the staff are really friendly. There was a good choice of breakfast and evening meals and both were lovely. We were lucky to have good weather and were able to sit in the well tended garden near the river one afternoon. The room was cleannd and comfortable but was at the back of the hotel so the view was of the closed swimming pool. If we went again I would request a room overlooking the river.
- Andrew (7/5): Comfortable & convenient - The shower, & more breakfast options other than the standard full English.
- WillIam (8/5): -
- Janis (8/5): Beautiful location and setting - The location was perfect for the purpose of our visit. The hotel and surrounding area was beautiful. The setting and the food in the restaurant was lovely and reasonably priced. It was very hot in all areas of the hotel in particular the bedroom with no option to open the window which made it very uncomfortable for relaxing and sleeping. Our room was very noisy with every passer by in the corridor being heard and the fire door along the corridor vacuum opening and closing noise. The lighting in the room was a bit too dull
- Frances (7/5): -
- Claire (10/5): - Nice big room and comfy bed. Good shower Swimming pool and rear garden area looked very run down and “abandoned” from what I could see from my window.
Dann müssen Sie hier Ihren Stop einplanen.
- John (2/5): Never - ever again. - Location , river views , location & historical reputation Most things. Small room, small bed, extremely firm to the detriment of sleep . A most uncomfortable night ever . Tiny TV , no bottled complementary water. Dinner was bland , very limited choice , sadly, breakfast lived down to expectations too. Undercooked bacon and sausage . Staff polite but not one person asked if everything was ok with meal / breakfast / room / stay. On checkout we were expecting the usual question , was everything ok with your stay ? We since chose to share thoughts with booking.com
At Checkout , with receptionist head down, no such interaction confirming the complete and total apathy here . Such a shame , wonderful location , let down by a lack of vision on what could / should / used to be a great place to stay
- Helen (8/5): - Attentive staff No access to the rivet.
- Enviroteam Services (10/5): -
- Cesare M. Cejas (9/5): Excellent location in Hexham - We stayed at George Hotel (Hexham) on our way to Scotland. Excellent location in the countryside with very friendly staff (also great place as a base if you want to see Hadrian's Wall). Food at the restaurant was equally great. Rooms have been renovated and are confortable. There's a section of the garden (towards the old swimming pool) which I believe is under construction (as of this review in April 2026), but is very much open & accessible and can potentially pose as a safety hazard.
- john (8/5): Highly recommended just a few minor issues - Excellent staff and location Pillows too soft and a little noisy in my room from other guests
- Andrew (8/5): - The location is very beautiful, staff were very helpful and the food was good. Very dog friendly. The corridor outside my room was a little noisy which was fine for me but kept getting my dog excited that someone was coming to visit her.
- Rob (10/5): - Great stay and location. The staff were brilliant 👏 Nothing
- Philippa (7/5): Lovely setting and comfortable accommodation - Great location on the river and a nice atmosphere The hotel is great in many ways but feels slightly as if it is resting on its laurels and relying on the location rather than striving to be excellent. The packed lunch was a particular disappointment, basically what we could have bought at the garage for half the price. Overall a good stay though.
- Imogen (9/5): - Clean and well presented, room was very welcoming and comfortable. N/a
- Quigs (7/5): - The setting was superb, lovely evening sat outside with a crisp cold pint overlooking the river in the sunshine 🌞
Good parking, spacious room and excellent shower.
Lovely steak, well cooked,I asked staff to compliment Chef.
Morning staff and breakfast were excellent, maybe put them onto evening service This is a mixed bag, young waiter probably needs a tad more training as he so nervous and at one stage ,even after I told him my room number several times and showed my key, asked me my name.....now I've never been asked this before and then he proceeded to ask me to spell it !! The 2 tables around me looked over in embarrassment at me and it was quite uncomfortable. Made me feel really uncomfortable.
- Eelke (8/5): Fijne plek voor een korte stop! - Ruime kamers en goed ontbijt
