Guest Reviews
- Adam (9/5): Short stay in South Uist - Room with sea view. Good shower. Lovely staff. Wonderful food. Restaurant and bar also have great sea views. Close to ferry terminals for Barra and the mainland. The room was rather compact and no shelving in the bathroom made getting ready a little difficult.
- Joanna (10/5): Fabulous - Fabulous welcome, friendly and professional staff. Otis our dog was also made so welcome too 😊
Superb location, excellent breakfast and Sunday lunch. Thank you all for a wonderful stay, see you in May 2027. There was nothing to not like!
- Mark (8/5): Fabulous location with stunning views - Dog friendly, and welcome in the bar area. Very comfortable rooms with stunning views. Nothing to highlight
- David (8/5): Okay, but owing to ferry changes didn’t have any more than 12 hours there! - Location and bed and areal Scottish breakfast Dated room furnishings
- Heather (9/5): Freindly staff, good food, cosy rooms. - After a wet and windy journey plagued with ferry cancellations, the Polochar Inn was a welcome sight! A friendly team and cosy room added to the experience. We wish we could ahve stayed longer! The bathroom was quite small, but the views out the window across the sea made up for it.
- DIANE (10/5): -
- Annabel (9/5): Great stay! - We had a great stay in a great location! Staff very friendly and we had a comfortable nights sleep. The walls are quite thin and you do hear your neighbour's.
- David (10/5): would probably say the best full Scotish breakfast I've had - Really excellent food both at breakfast and in evening. Great ingredients well cooked. I would probably say the best full Scotish breakfast I've had. In the evening I like an out of the way place that runs out of some items on the menu it means they are using fresh stuff and not just hauling another out of the freezer. If I'm pushed my single room was warm, cosy, freshly renovated, insulated from the cold winds but a little cramped. So in no sense a complaint.
- Noel (9/5): - Staff, bike friendly
- Helen (10/5): Perfect views, beautiful hotel, amazing staff - what more could you want. Thank you to all the staff for making us so we - Staff were so welcoming and couldn’t do enough to help. Would absolutely stay there again, thank you. Nothing

- Russell (8/5): beautiful location, very nice hotel, excellent vegan breakfast - Absolutely beautiful location. Very comfortable hotel and very helpful and friendly staff. Excellent vegan breakfast; evening vegan options were good but could be more interesting.
- Matthew (10/5): -
- Dee (8/5): Comfortable. Excellent t - We didn’t have breakfast No bathmat which was irritating rather than important. Other than that all good.
- Euan (9/5): Wonderful location and excellent service - Staff were really helpful and attentive. Food served was great, both breakfasts and evening meals. Stunning location for views, and dark skies. A small beach is 1 minute from the front door. Nothing
- Elizabeth (9/5): - Customer care and the setting N/A
- Linda (10/5): Excellent value for money. Food, accommodation and atmosphere was all brilliant. Will definitely be back - The location was beautiful with amazing views. Restaurant on site Car park at the rear
- Caryl (8/5): Great location, comfy beds, good choice for breakfast & nice dinner menu. Attentive & friendly staff - Nice location near the beach & handy for the causeway to get to Eriskay Car park round the back, carrying stuff in the rain
- sharon (8/5): Short but sweet stay at Polochar - On to a winner right away as a dog friendly hotel!! We stayed for 3 nights.
Location - over looking the sea; 15 min drive from ferry terminal; 10 min drive over to lovely Eriskay; co-op also a close drive away.
Food - varied menu for all meals; very tasty and good portion sizes.
Room - all rooms have a sea view. I stayed in a single room with en suite, perfectly comfortable.
Connectivity - free wifi access; tv in room. No probs with signal fortunately as CalMac changed the ferry times due to weather and sent text/email notifications about this.
Staff and management - all very friendly, helpful, and keen to make sure island life treats you well! No complaints

- Chris (10/5): A great welcome awaits. - The Polochar Inn is a great place to stay with fabulous views across the sound to Barra. All the staff, without exception are friendly and helpful. They really go out of their way to ensure you have a great stay. The bar and restaurant are very welcoming and the food is perfect. Breakfast offers a big choice and I recommend the Eggs Benedict. Nothing

- Sally (10/5): Greeted by friendly and helpful staff. Great location with sea view room - Friendly staff and great location
- Nancy (8/5): Had a lovely stay and nice to have such a kind welcome for my dog. Will definitely be back. - Friendly staff. Good location. Cosy inn.
- Cheryl (6/5): - The rooms are beautifully decorated and clean . The hotel is on the coastal line and the sea is a right there
It’s 15 mins to Lochboisdale if you’re on the ferry.
The hotel is quiet. Staff are very friendly and welcoming and welcomed my dogs too. It’s the second time I’ve had dinner there and it’s very expensive for the quality.
But there’s limited options in the area .
- Dave (10/5): -
- Steve (10/5): We had a wonderful stay, great food and such a welcoming staff. The manager was incredibly kind. -
- Stephen (8/5): - Really well presented for a remote place. Rooms refurbed really nicely. Dog friendly and nice staff
- Laura (3/5): Convenient to allow us to get to Barra. Please hire staff that have customer service skills. - The location to get us to the next step of our journey. I've never met more unhelpful, inattentive staff before. They left the dining room/bar unattended on several occasions. They served us a raw burger, and when we told the young waitress we couldn't eat it, she rolled her eyes at the young man in charge and never apologised. They both then disappeared into the kitchen and didn't resurface until I had to knock the door 15 minutes later to ask what they were going to do about our food.
- Linda (8/5): Good but tainted. - The location is stunning.
The food was brilliant.
The shower was very powerful and hot.
There was plenty of parking(we were in a lorry)
The Atlantic Ocean was about 20 feet from the front door. We were over doing a job and were stranded because of the weather. We asked if we would be able to come back and stay the weekend if we didn't get on the ferry at Loch Maddy and they said it wouldn't be a problem. When we didn't get the other ferry we phoned to make sure we could come back and they said no and they were now closed. It left us in a bit of predicament but thankfully we found accommodation at The Borrowdale Hotel.
- Barbara (9/5): Great location for the views & lovely food - Great location right next to the coast. The bedroom was neat but enough space for two of us & the bathroom was modern with a great shower & plenty of hot water. The restaurant staff were very good at catering for gluten free needs & it was lovely food.
- eddie (8/5): - The location was beautiful the food was good. Staff friendly. Our room was not serviced once even though we spent 5 nights there.we followed the in room instructions on how to get fresh towels but nothing happened. We had to ask for tea coffee etc to be replenished. Did not seem to be many staff around and so rarely anyone at reception or bar. It put a damper on our overall experience.
- Sharon (8/5): -
- JENNIFER (10/5): Exceptional place to stay, friendly staff and beautiful surroundings! - Stunning building in an amazing location. Nothing I thought it was lovely.
- Lesley (8/5): Perfect for the ferries in the south of the island. Friendly staff, good sized well furnished room. - The room was furnished really nicely. Lovely bathroom. Room was very generously sized. Good location. Friendly service. Good to be able to book somewhere where could eat on site at the restaurant even though very late in the season. The fixtures are a little bit tired but everywhere was clean and tidy and soft furnishings were all lovely.
- Nicola (10/5): Stayed for a few days on the island as visiting family.convenient, Richard the manager was lovely couldn’t do enough for - Clean and tidy. Lovely and warm. Nothing
- Wendy (9/5): - Comfortable one night stay Nothing
- Harrie (8/5): Lovely hotel with excellent restaurant on an incredible location - location is incredible
lovely old house very well restored and decorated
Onsite restaurant is great ntr
- Andrew (5/5): - Location.
Quality of food No welcome.
Dated. Partly refurbished...long way to go.
No "atmosphere"
- Ian (8/5): - The location is outstanding.
The staff are all lovely.
The breakfast is outstanding. The room was not as clean as it should have been.
The cups and glasses in the dining room were dirty.
- Gareth (9/5): -
- robert (8/5): -
- Denise (7/5): Lovely stay, beautiful location - Food was lovely Service was slow, maybe short staffed
- Derek (6/5): Won't be back. Our return visit spoiled some very happy family memories. - Excellent location right on an exquisite and remote shore line. Deliberately included Polochar in our Hebridean tour as we stayed there with our young children in 2007 and it was perfect back then. But the place is now tired with apathetic management (reception unmanned on our arrival and no one responded to the bell), Poor cleanliness, disastrously disorganised breakfast service and average food.
- Jörg (4/5): -
- Tapitapson (6/5): -
- Mantle (9/5): -
- Thomas (8/5): Polochar Inn for 2 Nights - Breakfasts and dinners were good. Staff were friendly. The access to the car park had a lot of very deep and large pot holes.
First impression at reception was of untidyness.
- Tim (9/5): -
- BB (8/5): -
- Wendy (9/5): Overnight stay - The location is stunning
The room was lovely
The staff were great
The food was really good
Excellent breakfast Nothing
- peter (9/5): Great overnight stay - Great location, nice sea view room, friendly staff and excellent food both for evening restaurant and breakfast. All good for us, would stay again.
- anastasia (10/5): Very nice place to stay comfortable and all in one place - Very nice place to stay, the rooms are nice and clean, large shower with all the necessary, the bed very comfortable plus in the place you have a pub and a restaurant. The staff was very welcoming too. Amazing sunset from the window. Nothing all good
- Ann (4/5): Average stay let down by staff who were hard to find and showed little customer care. - Location Walls paper thin. Poor customer service.
- Michael (9/5): Gerne wieder - Das Essen und die Lage Zimmer etwas klein
- Sophie (9/5): -
- Helen (4/5): Overpriced, £219, wouldn’t stay again or recommend, it could be so much better as in a good location - Location Rooms poor for the money £219
Quite a run down place overall
Staff try their best, scruffy
- STEPHEN (6/5): - Hotel was comfortable and clean. When we went down to the restaurant we were asked to go into the bar for our meal (same menu as the restaurant) but definitely not a intimate. We weren't 'waited' on as such, had to go to the bar to ask for our order to be taken and the bar man seemed to disappear for 10 minutes at a time with people waiting to order or pay for meals. Not good!
Bonus was the pod of dolphins that appeared in the bay during breakfast.
- Alison (4/5): Not the cosy special place you might be led to believe - Food from evening meal was quite good Staff not attentive except for one young woman who was doing her best. One male member of bar staff was rude - monosyllabic and unhelpful. Breakfast was very basic and of very poor quality. Tea served without a jug of milk - you have to get up use a communal one . Gave an impression of once being a good place to stay but this is absolutely no longer the case. During our stay on the islands using a number of different types of accommodation, 8 in all, this was by far the worst.
- agnes (10/5): Fabulous stay. Easy access by car to Lochboisdale ferry - Great location. Nice beach on doorstep and surrounding areas. Comfortable rooms nice dining area and good food
- Sheila (5/5): We had to ask for things for our room. Felt more like 2 star than 4 star. - Location & restaurant Size of room
- Terry (5/5): So much potential! - Location spectacular
Comfortable room The staff seemed tired and disinterested.
Knowledge of food on offer and local beverages were poor
The restaurant service was disappointing!
Bar man on his phone , tables and bar top full of glasses etc

- Alistair (10/5): -
- Gruffudd (3/5): - The location is good. The lounge bar has character. Some good whiskies and gin behind the bar. Staff untrained/ had little knowledge of the food and drink menu. No sense of welcome or positive interaction. Rooms very small and felt claustrophobic. Large insect in bed on first night. Breakfast was supposed to be until 9:30 on a Sunday (pretty early), but one of our group went down at 9:00 to find it packed away. No possibility of staying in the bar and lounge area after 11:00pm. A guest lounge exists but doesn't really work if more than one group wants to use it, hard to spend time in bedrooms as they're so small. The vegetarian option was much less substantial than the meat dishes and completely bland. The notion that it's 4 star es absurd.
- Jens (7/5): Für einen kurzen Aufenthalt okay - Gutes Essen, freundliches Personal Sehr teuer, schmales Bett
- Jonathan (7/5): -
- Nicole (8/5): -
- Gregor (9/5): Saved us from the storm! - What an amazing location! And the staff were very friendly and helpful. Dinner excellent too. Decor could maybe do with a bit of updating, other than that, no concerns
- Mark (3/5): Fab location. Hotel needs a refurb...and in the short term, much basic maintenance to be done... - Location is out of this world.
The younger staff were friendly and helpful, but hindered by worn out and broken facilities.
The food was very pleasant.
The manager accepted responsibility for the issues and remedied what he could. The room was dirty and tiny with broken features, not least the shower and loo seat. Beware the upgraded room we booked 5 months before which was advertised as 300sq ft with a large double was in fact around 100sq ft. with a standard double🤔 ... no alternative was available when we arrived.
- Paolo (8/5): -
- Audrey (10/5): Would stay here again - Very clean and comfortable rooms. Staff were pleasant and helpful. Location is beautiful. Nothing to dislike.

- Audrey (10/5): Would stay here again - Location, friendly and helpful staff, clean and comfortable rooms. Nothing to dislike.
- David (9/5): A unique location - Location was excellent: it is right on the beach with views of Eriskay. Dinner was hearty. Staff were attantive. Dog friendly.
- raffaella (10/5): - Posizione bellissima sulla spiaggia
- Emily (9/5): -
- Emily (5/5): Good location, friendly staff but sadly a little tired and cleanliness could have been better - Good location, friendly accommodating staff Cleanliness was a big issue.
The property was tired for the money but could have been overlooked if it was cleaner
- Niek (9/5): -
- Alan (7/5): - Location, food quite good, service decent Good hotel, but slightly jaded interior
- GILLIAN (8/5): - Staff foood location
- Frank (8/5): Lovely stay and great food. - Nice hotel in a great location with great staff. Food was fantastic. The hotel is under improvement - inside is traditionally Scottish. The outside areas are being upgraded and the outside is being painted in August. It will look much better by September.
- Ad (5/5): - Afstand naar de veerboot locatie was de reden dat we dit geboekt hebben. Hygiëne was slecht.
- Karen (9/5): - Lovely old hotel in a stunning spot. After a lovely walk by the sea we watched the sunset from our bedroom. The food was very nice and the service was great. Comfortable beds.
