Guest Reviews
- Janet (7/5): Short stay but perfect for visiting North Yorkshire. Good for scenic dog walks and a peaceful break - Beautiful, peaceful location. Close to shop and pub. Bus stop to City Centre. Parking. Small garden with outdoor seating. Welcome pack. Friendly and helpful owners. Well lit. Not far from York and other tourist attractions and eateries.
- Elizabeth (10/5): Comfortable and ideal for a short break. - Breakfast not included. There was nothing we didn’t like.
- Mihai (10/5): -
- kings (10/5): - Very clean tidy and well organised. Comfortable bed and although it was cold outside the heater warmed the lodge quickly. We appreciated the delicious cake and the tea and coffee making facilities. Beautiful location with a lovely view.
- Diana (9/5): Fantastic -
- Andrea (10/5): -

- Kimberley (8/5): Our accommodation was comfy and cosy, lovely welcome gifts and spotlessly clean! - Location, views, comfy bed, welcome lemon drizzle cake and pint of milk, unique setting. Portaloo was fine but three days was max with it!
- Sally (10/5): Peaceful place to unwind - Well appointed, spotless, in a fantastic location. So peaceful, beautiful views in a stunning village. Absolutely loved it and will be booking up again shortly. Nothing
- Simone (10/5): -
- Claire (8/5): It’s in a beautiful area & would recommend it. - Location was fabulous, the accommodation was cute. And the lemon drizzle went down a treat.
Lots of hot water, great shower.
Lots of beautiful fruit trees around and nice groomed gardens. Couldn’t see the ruins very clearly for the bushes (understand birds may be coming to the end of nesting). The mattress was tired (although the bed was nice and clean).
- Turty (9/5): Peace and quiet in a fabulous setting - Peace and quiet. Location. Setting. Bed a little soft for us. Lounge chairs could be improved.
- Phil (10/5): - Simply stunning surroundings and everything was provided for a perfect escape from city life.
The hosts were absolutely fantastic.
Lovely private garden area if you take the dogs.
Great places to go for walks and enjoy the scenery.
- Myra (9/5): - Location very peaceful with lovely outlook from the balcony. Nice homemade lemon cake provided. Beautiful location with lots of walks closeby. The porta potty toilet. Very low and unpleasant experience, saved myself when going out, otherwise everything else in the shower room good.
- Jane (8/5): Peaceful, pretty location. Perfect for a short stay - Lovely location.
Nice to be able to sit outside on the balcony.
Some nice touches like fresh flowers and cake.
Basics like oil, salt and pepper, tea and coffee, fresh milk were all provided.
Even emergency sanitary products in the bathroom. Only the toilet, which we were aware of, took a while to get the hang of.
- Gail (10/5): First time solo travelling , felt safe in the location lovely private garden for my dog overall just - Very private beautiful views great location
- Anya (10/5): A blissful, restful, nature rich and historical place to enjoy. - Fabulous view and the owner gave me a tour of the castle and a brief history of the grounds Loved it all - was surprised by the porta-potty loo but it made sense was super clean so all to like really
- Danielle.i (10/5): Exceptional - The fact it is dog friendly is the biggest plus! The private garden and balcony were perfect for that sense of privacy. The gorgeous lemon cake and bottle of milk left for us by the owners was a nice touch. The view of the castle from the balcony was amazing. Bed was really comfy. Very peaceful location. Owners were very friendly.
- Janet (10/5): Exceptional - The location and the peace and quiet There was nothing we didn't like
- Susan (9/5): This is an idyllic setting in country Yorkshire. We had a great time visiting family who live nearby - The location, views, ambience are gorgeous. The bed is comfy and the shower was hot with great pressure. The hosts are lovely - they left cake and fresh milk, tea and coffee. Lack of a flushing loo is a bit of a negative - though the ‘caravan’ type loo works efficiently.
- Claire (10/5): Amazing birthday getaway - Absolutely amazing little summer house, we were extremely blessed with the weather during our stay. The views of the castle and surrounding countryside are outstanding. Friendly, informative host, peace and quiet in abundance. Comfy bed, powerful hot shower, immacuately clean. Local country lane walks, lovely country pub close by. Nothing to mention
- David (9/5): Lovely, scenic place, I would go back again. - The location and the owners.
- Jimmy (10/5): Exceptional -
- Bill (5/5): Basically a caravan. - Very well appointed. The location was excellent. There was no Wi-Fi or TV. The early morning bird chorus was very clearly heard, and the tin roof was loud when it rained. If you are happy with a Portaloo, then that is OK. It was like a small caravan, which is fine, but I do not think the description was obvious. I was happy overall, but I think the price was a bit high for what it was.
- Gillian (10/5): Monday to Thursday - We self breakfast cute watch view front window see very cold frozen land beautiful we enjoyed Nothing
- Gretchen (10/5): Would Stay Again. - The lovely hosts left a sweet note with some delicious lemon drizzle cake. We were also shown around the grounds with our dog, while she played with the dog of the owner of the property. Really lovely people. We also liked a piece of artwork that was for sale in our cabin, made by a local artist. The weather: hit by Storm Bert. But the coziness of the cabin made it very pleasant. Obviously, the weather cannot be helped. You just come prepared when you come to the north of England. The owner would have been very accommodating had we required anything.
- Merlinsmum (10/5): A real gem in stunning Yorkshire - Beautiful venue in an idyllic location.
This stunning accommodation is set in the most amazing setting in the grounds of a ruined castle which once beloved to Richard III.
It was warm & nicely decorated with a really comfy bed. The shower was really efficient and warm, & the little extras such as milk, tea, coffee etc were really thoughtful - especially the home made cake!
Pat & Tash (& beautiful Ottilee, the Otter Hound) were perfect hosts. Getting a personal tour of the castle, along with their completely unique wedding venue, was a real treat too.
It's worth noting that there is no TV in the room, or wi-fi connection, although this didn't bother us in the slightest as we enjoyed the peace & quiet.
The local pub, The Highwayman, was pleasant & dog friendly with a decent enough selection of drinks. We were unlucky in that the pub kitchen was closed for the half term holiday when we were there so we can't comment on the food but the locals were friendly & welcoming.
We will definitely return to Castle Lodge. I found the chemical loo a bit unusual. Someone with mobility issues might struggle with how low it was.
It wasn't unhygienic or unpleasant, & the request for it to be emptied was responded to very quickly by the hosts - it was just unexpected (which it shouldn't have been considering there is a photo of it in the property description). I was just a bit unobservant, I guess.🙂
- Brian (1/5): Shed - Nothing Everything
- George (9/5): Lovely accommodation, cosy and clean! - A lovely quiet place to stay close to York. The lodge was cosy and had everything we needed for our 2 night stay.
Host was very friendly and accommodating. Nothing! Thank you!
- Richard (9/5): Enjoyed our stay. - The location was great. With a lovely view.
Lovely village. Not keen using a porta loo. But ok for a couple of nights. Didn’t spoil our stay. Would definitely stay again.
- Pamela (10/5): Perfect setting for a relaxing break - We had a lovely relaxing 2 night break in this accommodation set in a beautiful peaceful location with amazing views of the ruined castle which made it very atmospheric. The lodge was well equipped, clean and very comfortable. Perfect for visiting relatives nearby. Cake on arrival and milk in the fridge - much appreciated. We enjoyed the local walks and being able to see round the castle too. Thank you for a most enjoyable stay.
- Lewis (10/5): Exceptional -
- Susan (8/5): Very good -
- Angie (10/5): Enjoyed the peace and tranquility. Perfect for walks and relaxation - Unique.
Exactly as described. View exceptional. Perfect
- Caroline (10/5): Perfect, tranquil dog friendly stay. - Perfect dog friendly stay. So tranquil. Owner lovely and showed us the castle in between guests. Lovely lemon cake on arrival. Accommodation beautiful, clean, comfy bed and good size shower. Also liked the enclosed garden for the dog. Would definitely recommend and stay again. Nothing. All perfect.
- Elaine (10/5): Beautiful and peaceful - Sitting outside, no one over looking All good
- Ian (10/5): Ideal for a chill weekend. - Stunning location. No Tv or Wi Fi 👍 Chemical toilet but understand due to remote location.
- Louise (10/5): Just what we needed to get away from it all. - Beautiful location
- Anonymous (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely views and lovely hosts
- C8824 (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely location with lots of walks, a great little pub, store and coffee shop within 5 min walk
and Natasia was the best host. We arrived to a lovely lemon cake and she generously gave us a tour of the castle in the evening. The lodge was really comfortable and cosy and the heater warmed it in literally 5 minutes! The only thing would be a proper flushing toilet, that's the only thing that wasn't worth the cost but everything else was brilliant!
- Gillian (9/5): Superb -
- Charley (10/5): Exceptional - Very secluded and private with beautiful views and lovely helpful staff
- Stewart (9/5): Superb -
- Una (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely location, lovely hosts.
- Anonymous (10/5): Great place to stay and if you love Castles, it’s a must! Will most definitely go back and would recommend it without he - Our host was very friendly and conscientious, made sure that should we require any help she would be available.
This was a lovely place to stay, clean, comfortable and the views were amazing! Everything there for a cuppa and cake! Facilities for cooking as well. There was nothing about the property that we disliked.
- Jack (10/5): Exceptional - We had the best weekend ever at castle farm. We stayed in the castle lodge with our dog. Upon arrival Natasha was really welcoming and had even made us some homemade lemon drizzle cake. The lodge and the surroundings were beautiful with an incredible view of the castle. Everything within the lodge was so well thought out for practicality and cosy aesthetics. Everything you could of asked for and really clean. They are really dog friendly and safe for them to have a wonder round as they have gates around the lodge. They even had a treat waiting for our dog upon arrival. Thank you Natasha for the great communication throughout and the amazing hospitality and would definitely come again.
- Brendan (10/5): the main word is perfection. we needed a break from the world and we got it. from the second we pulled into the driveway - everything! the beautiful views. beautiful cabin. facilities were brilliant. balcony was perfect. everything was perfect. nothing. genuinely nothing.
- Julie (10/5): Magnificent break away from it all with amazing castle view. - The lodge was spacious and very comfortable with all I needed for a getaway. The terrace looked onto fields with a spectacular view of the ruined castle. Plenty of wildlife to see and hear. No tv or internet ensured a real break
away from it all. There’s a pub and store five minutes away and the locals are friendly. York is a short drive away. Fantastic. I was given only one hand towel- I hope it was a mistake . I used the shower every day.
- Kathryn (9/5): Beautiful location and a comfy stay. - Really friendly owner with resident dog, welcome gift of homemade cake. Beautiful view and enclosed grass area for the dog. Shower temperature a little temperamental.
- Adrian (10/5): Perfect weekend of peace and tranquility. - perfect location. Nice and peaceful with an amazing view of the castle ruin and surrounding fields. Lovely walks for the dogs and fantastic owners.
