Guest Reviews
- Mark (8/5): Comfort! - Nestled very close to Scarborough in Scalby, this house is a very comfortable stay, and has the happy extras of plentyful roadside parking and two pubs on your doorstep.
The kitchen has more than expected with an airfryer, microwave, and slow cooker (as well as a hob), and there is instant hot water for your shower. The double bed is very comfortable too. Some modernisations with lighting may help and some floorboards could lose a squeak, otherwise hardly anything to criticise.

- Claire (9/5): Homely stop - Location - village is lovely, great pubs and places to eat. Visit the local store, the owner is a gem.
The cottage itself is very authentic. Lots of books and a radio, perfect. We felt like we were staying at an old friends house.
15 minute drive to South Beach.
- Zara (1/5): - Nothing The place was absolutely freezing cold the place wasn't clean the towels and bedding were dirty we were not told that the hosts lived on site absolutely would not recommend this place to my worst enemy
- Carmen (2/5): Wouldnât recommend unless you donât mind dark and dingy and left feeling uncomfortable as soon as you enter. Photos on w - Nothing Was not very private. Seperate keys to lock different rooms instead of whole property. Rooms were dark and dusty. Lights in kitchen were constantly flickering. Kitchen was not clean. Cupboards full of peopleâs clothes. We left 5 mins after arriving. Felt very uncomfortable and like we were being watched

- Haw (8/5): - Nice little cottage/different Mens clothes is cubard and drawer was freaky.not that clean
- April (8/5): - It was a peaceful and quiet location with good amenities within walking distance The pillows are past their best
- Harry (8/5): The Ferns, Scalby - Scalby village is an location was excellent.
Atmospheric and somewhat like going back in time. I was born in the 1950s. The 'wireless' and plentiful books & decor added to the experience. The kitchen was small but packed in a washing machine, dryer, dish washer, fridge, microwave, 4 slice toaster and air fryer. No sink in the kitchen. Cutlery tray needed a clean.
- Gaynor (8/5): Peaceful! - Great location, nice cozy area and peaceful with atmosphere. N/A
- Ian (1/5): Wrongly advertised, itâs a room you are getting with shared access to the owners house - Nothing, itâs wrongly advertised. Itâs a room!!! And the rest is just the upstairs of someoneâs house that is not separated so the owner could walk around it at free will if they wished. If I hadnât of arrived in the evening with my 2 kids I would have left and went elsewhere. There is no door separating the âapartment âonly door with lock is the bedroom. Owner clearly lives in the same part of the building. His clothes are in the drawers and cupboards, his food is in the cupboard, a used razor in the bathroom when I was staying with a 4 year old đ¤Ź. Bed room cold as there is a window missing that the reviews show fell out weeks ago. Itâs dark and dingy like the other bad reviews say. It needs taking off booking.com. The owner will reply to this saying itâs in the description on the website but it is NOT!!! On booking.com absolute disgrace.

- Rhys (8/5): - An absolutely lovely location. Very quaint and peaceful. The apartment was very well equipped for everything we needed. The beds were super comfy and the shower, very good! The decor was a little old fashioned to my taste, but not off putting.
- Livingston (7/5): -
- Angela (10/5): - Comfy bed lovely village, plenty of facilities
- shaun (10/5): - Great location to where we wanted to be.
Lovely little cottage. Very Hetty Wainthrope. Great village. The single bed base was damaged. Too late at night to do anything about it. Not a great night's sleep. But everything else made up for it.
- John (5/5): The bed was comfy & we got a good nightâs sleep. Also the crockery was very good. - Breakfast N/a Location very good. The dreary dark lounge. The trees near the window need pruning & the lighting is poor.
- Barber (3/5): I didnât stay in the house felt uncomfortable - Good location Didnât feel very private,
I had the feeling like I was in someone elseâs house with the owner living inside, no greeting the house felt uncomfortable in this situation the feeling of no personal space.
- Chris (8/5): -
- Lily (8/5): Overall it was lovely. - It is a very homely place and has everything youâd need when coming to stay. The host had laid out things such as tea towels, bath mat, bath towels, soaps etc. The bed was really comfy so I managed to sleep really well. There was a wide variety of books for those who enjoy reading. Never met with the host but he seemed really friendly over messages and was really helpful when I had any inquiries. Low cleanliness in some areas. There was already food in the pantry area, not sure if this was left over by others or provided by the host. However, some products were out of date. There were products in the bathroom cupboards. Again, they looked as if they couldâve been left by others as there was a used razor in one of the drawers.
- Mantas (7/5): Good -
- Beverley (8/5): Very good - Brilliant location close to open air theatre and not far from Scarborough and the village of Scalby was lovely and we were a stones throw away from a pub! Dated decor and facilities and cold bath tap broke so we couldn't use bath/shower but that said the host was quick to turn up and deal with the issue and it was excellent value for money and was ideally situated
- Paula (10/5): Exceptional - All of it Having to go home
- Allison (7/5): Good - Was ok wish we could have got into gradens
- Paul's (9/5): Great location served by a village shop and a couple of pubs. - The location was great and the parking pretty good. I could always see my car even though it was street parking. All in all I enjoyed my stay there. The fridge control needs attention as does the kitchen light switch. All still usable though.
- Andrew (8/5): Lovely cottage in a nice location - Lovely cottage in an ideal location, walking distance to 2 different pubs (although I didn't try either so can't comment on them) everything felt very homely
The beds in the bedroom were lovely, everything was very clean, i even noted that things like shower gel and shampoo had been left out.
I would definitely stay there again The venue could do with a few tiny bits to make it even better, for example while there was WiFi, the password was written on a tiny bit of paper in the corner of the kitchen and so we didn't see it until we were nearly leaving.
The TV is very old, no smart apps and some of the buttons on the remote didn't work, advertising as a family friendly venue, simple things like a tv with YouTube and good WiFi access go a long way these days for families travelling with children, especially in a rural setting, again a very minor observation and a potential incredibly easy fix
- Asa-jai (10/5): Cosy, low cost, amazing location. - The property was exceptionally cosy, people complaining about the decor were clearly expecting the sterility a hotel room offers. This property had charm, it felt like staying with family instead of in a hotel.
I had an issue with accessing the wifi (tip: Yes, the characters are XX and not xx or yy or YY etc) but the host helped me fix things very quickly. Once connected, the wifi was nice and fast and stable. The bed headboard was a bit loose and clattered when I moved, it could do with tightening or removing. My fault for not mentioning during my stay though! I feel the host would have fixed it if made aware.
- Susan (8/5): Very good - Fantastic collection of books, nice and warm, great period house. Thank you for a lovely stay.
- Daniella (3/5): Wasnât prepared , very poor quality but good price - The location and the bathroom was okay Wasnât clean & prepared at all
No soap to even wash your hands
- Trevor (6/5): Perfect location for our stay / local amenities - property is a little dated but the owners give you privacey and th - Location is great - 2 mins walk to both the nags head and the plough so good for food / drink in the evening post the days beach walk etc (Beach 10 mins drive away ) This is a lovely property in a great location - the owners let it as an apartment & provide a âlight touchâ approach to check in / out (they leave a key / you donât see anyone so very easy if thatâs what you like )
While there is a lot of space (bedrooms/lounge/kitchen/bathroom ) it is not high tech and does feel a little like your staying in a part of the unused house .
The price reflects what you get and it is absolutely functional / well located - just manage your expectation on decor / facilities .
Scalby is a great spot to base yourself from to walk the local coastal routes .
- Ambreen (7/5): Nice house. Good stay once I got over what I expected. - Homily decor. Host available and did try to accommodate requests. It was a short stay, so hopefully some things will be seen to for future guests.
Free WiFi Living room was comfy with plenty of books, a telly, dining table and chairs. Did have all you need. The kitchen was more of a utility room with added facilities of a kitchen. The only sink we had was in the bathroom next to the 'kitchen' utility room. Free parking was on street not on site.
- Shivshankar (10/5): Exceptional -
- Cat (7/5): Good -
- Mr (8/5): Other than the drink issue very happy with the apartment great value for money - Nice quite location close to a family party so we didnât have to drive home Unfortunately there was no caffe or milk to make a drink in the morning
- Phil (10/5): Exceptional -
- KrisztiĂĄn (6/5): Pleasant -
- Tushar (10/5): Exceptional -
- Julie (10/5): Exceptional -
- David (6/5): Pleasant -
- Ashley (7/5): 1 Night in Scalby - The apartment over 2 floors was very spacious with plenty of facilities. The location was on the main street in the village opposite a pub, but was still very quiet. I had a good nights sleep. Check in and out were easy and can be done without contact with the owner. I was able to park on the street very close to the property. If you like being surrounded my modern conveniences and gadgets, then you may be more suited to somewhere else.
- Ukwanderer (7/5): I enjoyed it. - Fern cottage will not be for everyone. Quaint and quirky would be used to describe it. Personaly I loved it and felt at home. I will be visiting again if allowed. Lovely area that I look forward to seeing more of. I suppose I have complain about something to be honest.. The TV channel control did not work.. I read a book and enjoyed the peace.
- Roddy (8/5): Very good - Very nice cosy accommodation
- Jan (7/5): Quiet. Friendly village. Very comfy bed. Suitable for single/couple. - Location within the village was good. Scarborough not too far away. Quiet. Tree lined streets. Added to the charm but blocked a lot of light from the living room. Not the hosts fault though.
- Karl (5/5): Passable - The down the road serves lovely food The place is very dated. IE clutter, dark furniture, no shower and not the cleanest.
- Sarah (7/5): Good - Beds were comfortable Was dated but clean and presentable
- Charmaine (7/5): Went smoothly from booking which made the trip more enjoyable - Location was peaceful and safe to park car. Had all the basics required for a couple of days stay. Only
A 10 min drive to Scarborough Beach. The hot tap on the bath was very loose.
- Dawson (9/5): Comfortable and met my immediate needs. - Nice location between places I needed to visit, comfortable and quite classy. I was able to settle in easily, there were cooking facilities in a well equipped kitchen, comfortable sitting room with TV and the bed was clean and comfortable.
It was located in a village and beautiful at that The property was very nice, it suited me just fine.
- Mark (9/5): Superb - It was all fine
Good value for the cost.
We were walking the Tabular Hills and it's was a good location for that .
We were allowed to check in 3/4 of an hour early.
We never really used the kitchen except the fridge.
The place was on 2 floors which was fine for us.
Overall it felt a good place to relax in a home like environment for the evening. Everything was fine
- Stephen (1/5): Dark ,dingy and not as clean as expected so we did not stay we left after an hour - The village Cleanliness
- Gary (10/5): Exceptional -
- Andrew (7/5): Simple overnight stay without breakfast. - Location was great. On street parking was limited
- Barrie (8/5): Very good -
- Iain (7/5): Good value, quaint place to stay in Scalby - Location was great in centre of scalby
- Gary (8/5): Very good - Was in the centre of the village, very quiet and great value for money Absolutely nothing
- Richard (6/5): Pleasant - Lovely old property with easy parking
- Neil (4/5): Glad it was just for work and not pleasure - Kitchen facilities and bathroom facilities
- Nikki (9/5): Superb - The quirkiness of the cottage and it was situated perfectly for the pubs To my mirrors they were everywhere
- Catherine (7/5): Beautiful village - It is very dated could defo do will a bit of a spruce up my little boy was on a camp bed and it collapsed on him twice but itâs in a beautiful little place Not really a proper kitchen could not have stayed more than a few days
- Colin (8/5): Very good - Location, very peaceful.Host very friendly and helpful . Apartment well equipped Heating inadequate for time of year and size of rooms ..No shower.
- Shelley (10/5): Exceptional -
- Beverly (4/5): Stay at Grandmas - It was OK but very old fashioned in style representing a grandma style interior. Warm enough. 2 ring electric hob.plug in. No sink. No cooker
- Ems (2/5): Very poor -
- Arturas (10/5): Exceptional -
- Brown (10/5): Exceptional -
- Richard (1/5): Bad - Good location Really strong fusty damp smell could do with a revamp there is no shower, also states its a single bed but it not its a camp style bed which I would only put children on would not recommend.
- Nick (8/5): Very good - No breakfast the host played the piano in the evening which I found very relaxing Shower would have been good đ
- Taylor (7/5): Good -
- BirutÄ (5/5): Passable -
- Ruth (7/5): Good - Wonderfully quiet. Lovely to have the space provided, with not only the bedroom, but the sitting room and kitchenette as well.
- Sal (10/5): Exceptional - A very cosy and wonderful traditional cottage i would certainly stay here again đ N/a
- David (6/5): Pleasant - Very comfy bed đ Bit dated not very clean
- Anonymous (7/5): Unfortunately had to leave early due to a family illness but very comfortable and great value in a great location - Comfortable and very well priced
- Steve (9/5): Superb -
- Hughes (7/5): Good - Good location, my son liked the fold up bed and enjoyed browsing the books.. it was only a flying visit but was perfectly placed for our itinerary. Plenty of towels, leaflets on places to go.
- Alan (9/5): Superb - Quaint Little dark coming back late could do with night light.
- Combie (1/5): Bad - Except the location Not much. 1, It is a bedroom bathroom and living room which the owner has access to.
2, It is in need of modernisation.
3, The facilities listed are nothing to do with the property.
- Jack (10/5): An exceptional Stay - A lovely old fashioned home feeling, felt very much like a piece of home away from home. I loved all the books and it had every facility you could think off.
The cute garden at the front was perfect. Plenty of amenities locally and the host was most gracious.
- Stephen (10/5): Exceptional -
- Christopher (10/5): Exceptional -
- Anonymous (9/5): Superb -
- James (1/5): Not an enjoyable experience. - The bath was very comfortable with hot water.
Did have a washing machine and a dishwasher, plus a fridge/freezer. The bed mattress was that bad you could the springs through your spine. Needs a new mattress.
The apartment was misrepresented. It's the 1st floor of a house. Not segregated or seperated. Which made both of ourselves feel not at ease. Host belongings were in the cupboards and draws in the hallway and living room.
No stove to cook anything. Not even a plug in portable stove. Just a microwave.
There was a musty smell throughout.
- Paul (10/5): Exceptional -
- Pearce (10/5): Exceptional - Extremely pleasant and helpful. Everything.
- Natalie (7/5): Good -
- Asad (6/5): Pleasant -
- Mark (8/5): Very good -
- Natalie (7/5): Good -
- Kirsty (5/5): Passable - Good location to the hospital where I was working.
Free on-road parking outside property
Clean enough - staying in a person's home ultimately so expect it to feel lived in. Not as private as advertised - there is a lock on the bedroom door but essentially staying in the same property as the host. I expected the floors to be separated more securely. Pull cord for the main bedroom light didn't work. Fridge/freezer didn't appear to be working but the property served its purpose to get a nights sleep before working again the next morning.
- Andrew (8/5): Stayed for 7 days at a great price - Convenient location The bath ..a shower would be better
- Johnny (9/5): is good for stay with this low budget .. nothing can ask for more. - location is great. only bath tub available .. with shower will be perfect.
- Sandra (1/5): Disappointing - No parking outside house had to park near disused garages, wet through bringing shopping in. House needs a good clean & refurb.
- Susan (3/5): I did not feel comfortable in this property - Well located for me in the lovely village of Scalby Rooms not separate from owners home - not able to lock it secure - as lone female I felt uncomfortable not doing this
No usable kitchen facilities- area off the bathroom had jumble of kitchen equipment in it but no running water or sink
Place smelt musty & damp and of cigarette smoke seemingly coming from owners rooms
