- Ruaidhri (9/5): A wonderful relaxing time and very thankful to the owner! - I stepped through the door into the wow factor. I have previously stayed in Thessaloniki many times in apartments like this one (like the ones owned by Halu!) and this one was no different which is wonderful when you are travelling solo because you just want to pick up the key, go in and relax with everything clean and ready for you. I stayed two weeks this time and it was really incredible value. I looked at the others in the same price range and they were definitely not as nice and very far away (or not in nice areas). The added importance was needing to use a washing machine as I have been in Greece nearly a month and wanted clean clothes. Everything worked, it was mainly clean and the location could not have been beaten. I also found it very safe which again is important as a solo traveller. Sometimes the door to the road for these buildings is broken which means anybody can just come in, but in this case it was a chip key, so super secure and all the doors inside were completely triple dead-bolted too so this made me feel very secure. There was even a speaker playing light music as you walked in, which really added to the ambience and relaxing feel going in and out. There is actually a small balcony, but I didn’t explore this as it had been used for the cleaning equipment. I would most certainly stay here again. I mention the balcony. This could have been made more a feature although I understand why it wasn’t because it backs on to another building and it is pretty dirty out there. Unfortunately though this is the only source of natural light that you get, which cannot be helped so it is either that or not know what time it is (which is brilliant for sleeping though). There was a small problem when I arrived, but the owner came personally to sort it out and was super apologetic and very nice, so definitely not his fault. The only other things slightly odd (and is the case with many other greek properties so if you have never been before don’t be alarmed) were the fixtures and fittings which tend to be a bit of an afterthought for greek builders… i.e. the toilet (which is wall hung) always wanted to come off the wall every time i sat on it. It was fine for me, but eat too many Souvlakia and it could be you! Also (which is quite common in Greece) the shower goes over the whole floor of the bathroom, so do not leave anything on the floor unless you want to wring it out. The next was the kitchen, which although is self catering did not include many utensils or cutting equipment so cooking would have been near impossible - even making a simple xoriatiki salad was a bit of a cartoon as a result. The kitchen features push-close cabinets, but these drawers needed to be closed with the softest of an angels caress otherwise they spring back open again and then you have a load of drawers that you can’t close. The last thing was the television or (what I thought was a lovely touch) a television facing the bed and another for the living area. The issue with this is because they back onto each other and there is only a decorative wall between it means that if you point the remote to turn on one television in the living area… the one in facing the bed comes on too… so you end up with Euronews and a Greek comedy trying to compete at the same time.
