Guest Reviews
CASH ONLY!

- Mary (9/5): Great stay at Monkey Hostel - The proprietor and staff were very friendly and accommodating. Margerie would help us with arranging transportation and was flexible when there were changes in our itinerary. The hostel has a relaxed social atmosphere with interesting guests from around the world. The shared kitchen was overcrowded at meal times.
- Ewart (8/5): Loved it, the staff was great! Private room 3 was the best best best - The staff were great! Loved the private room, perfect temperature, very clean, nice view and lighting. The shower was a little cold but refreshing. The shower was a little cold..

- Manon (4/5): - Location, hot shower (if low pressure) Matress must be changed (springs in your bones), tiny lockers, cannot properly cook because very little tools and people working there themself put the tools in fridge or use and dont wash them, lol. Worker family came at dîner to do there nails with machine in the kitchen/doing area, very nice use of the hostel. The entrance door is never locked and there is nobody working at night and evening so anybody can enter the place and the bedrooms. Everything is cheap, to make as much money as they can I guess (you feel like sleeping outside with the wind, one light for the entire room, bed curtains kept following because the bar are way too short etc etc.). They ask you to pay more than what booking indicate in your booking total to pay. You cannot access the kitchen between 12pm and 7pm; I really needed to pick up my sandwich between two activities and they did not let me in, quite annoying (as restaurant around are expensive for low quality). So overall very disappointing for me. I had amazing hostel for cheaper in Costa Rica the same week, with owner truely caring for you, so I comment knowing what is possible for this price.

- Zeledón (10/5): Recomendado - Exc staff, location is nice with great views, bedrooms ok, hot water included. Kitchen equipment ok. Limited breakfast options
- Guest (2/5): Worst hostel on the 14 day trip - Very loud with the bar “on premises” bed had no padding only spring. Owner wasn’t aware we were staying and was very drunk while we were trying to sleep. My friend had to a confrontation with him while going to car to get camping sleeping pad to pad their bed. Owner wasn’t aware of our last minute booking and at 3 in the morning acused my friend of being an imposter. This situation was pretty awkward but resolved when I got out of bed to meet him and show him our reservation. The owner wasn’t aware then very apologetic and we negotiated discount. Breakfast is make yourself eggs and toast which were stored in the oven so we didn’t realize it. Overall the location is great and we really enjoyed the jungle bar food and drinks right down the road.

- Thomas (6/5): Well located cheap hostel that could do with a upgrade to less painful beds. - Good location. Quiet at night. Free coffee and eggs and toast for breakfast. The worst bed ever in a double room. I could feel the springs it was actually painful.
- Bezdecheck (4/5): Pretty place, but staff made it an uncomfortable experience - Good location
Clean and comfortable
Overall great value I was told late at night that I needed to pay in cash, which was an unpleasant surprise. I had to walk to an ATM and accrued $20 in additional fees.
Twice, staff barged into my room without knocking. The door was closed, but they pushed it open!!
It is loud! The staff walk up and down the hallways chatting very loudly, but you can also hear whispers. Walls are unbelievably thin.
I was given incorrect departure information regarding a tour which caused a lot of confusion
- luciana (8/5): -
- Angel (1/5): - Se mojó la habitación
- Joran (8/5): Relaxed atmosphere - I liked the cosy and relaxed atmosphere and amazing view from the living room! The host was maintaining the hostel well. The shower was cold, even though the host indicated that the hot water was fixed. So maybe it's just me, but I heard other people in the hostel complain about cold showers.
With the rainy days here it's nice if I could have a hot shower next time.

- Nomo1 (10/5): Exceptional - The staff were so nice, especially the owner Raudin was very friendly and tried to make everything as easy as possible. You can tell that he really wants to improve the facilities.
Really great value for money with the breakfast included! The location is also great and there were many people staying at the hostel, so felt very social as well!
Special shoutout for the cute dog Mia!!!
- Willhem (10/5): Exceptional -
- Willhem (10/5): Exceptional -
- Alex (10/5): Exceptional - The staff are lovely and so helpful. Helped to organise tours and transport to my next destination. property is close walking distance to everything you need
- Viren (4/5): Not a good value for your money, but it's adequate if you just need a place to stay that is central. - Location was central to the main town you could walk to the main town from the hostel for the most part. Staff were friendly and helpful in any thing I needed there were activities provided, and they help organize tours and other outside excursions if needed, there's a good social vibe of in the hostel. The hot water barely worked. You really had to play around with the tap and barely any hot water came. There was barely any lighting in the room. I had to use my own headlamp to provide lighting when it got dark. They only accept cash to pay for the room and other transactions whereas other places you can pay with card.
It was hard to lock the doors, both from the outside and the unit itself. I had to play around with the outside door by lifting it slightly above ground to try to lock it from the outside the unit cannot be locked with the key. You have to lock it from the inside.
Although they provide some breakfast, the breakfast itself is very minimal. If you were expecting a meal, you likely would need to go outside to purchase in town. The breakfast, I got consisted of a plate of some rice, fried plantains, and a couple tortilla chips while I do appreciate the hard work that may go through. I don't feel the value of what I got versus what I paid was there.
- Abbey (10/5): Best Hostel in Costa Rica - Must Stay!! So cozy when the weather is bad, and when the weather is good have access to a big deck with look out over valley. Beds are comfy with curtains. Delish pancake breakfast. Yir is so so lovely, one of best and friendliest hostels I have stayed in all year. Big equiped kitchen, lots of boardgames to play and all info of what to do in town. Watch toucans and monkeys and parrots while you have breakfast. Only 1 plug in dorm room (plenty in communal areas)
- Bowyer.k (7/5): Good -
- Worden (6/5): Pleasant - Loved the location and view from the deck. The rooms could have used more storage or hooks
- Ashley (9/5): Great spot in a fab location. - A great, sociable hostel in a great location. Yir is a superstar and helps with everything you need. Comfy beds and great decks to chill out on. Free breakfast to help start your day.
- Miriam (9/5): Affordable and well located - It was clean and had a good location with good views. We saw toucans and pisotes while having the free breakfast.
- Alice (8/5): Very good -
- Camille (8/5): Very good - Clean hostel, nice people. It's located at 300-400m from the city center of Santa Elena. The shower wasn't beautiful in my room.
- Rosanna (5/5): Passable -
- Alvin (9/5): The other side of the busy Puerto Viejos - The kitchen and the common area to socialize, eat, and chill. I love the fact that it's not that away from the busy street yet the area is quiet. Could have been better if the ventilators were a bit big.
- Amy (7/5): Good value for money. - Clean and good location. Great value for money. Good kitchen facilities for cooking. Not a lot of common space to sit comfortably, could certainly do with a couch for days when you’re sitting around. Breakfast was also very poor.
- Bethany (8/5): Very good - Lady running the place was really friendly and helpful with us booking activities - seemed to be at a cheaper price than other places too. Nice kitchen and the place is kept clean. Good hot shower. Pancakes for breakfast were nice. Curtains on the window from corridor into our room were quite thin so room was a little bright until they were turned off later. Not a big problem though!
- Jan (8/5): Very good - Great location, you can do lots of hikes from here. Familial atmosphere in the hostel.
- Maya (4/5): Disappointing -
- Andrea (10/5): Exceptional - The staff were very friendly and helpful with organising activities in the area. The pancakes and fruit for the free breakfast were delicious. The common area and kitchen are spacious and a nice place to meet other travellers. There are books and games to keep you entertained on a rainy afternoon. Well located and has a beautiful view of the first from the outside seating area. Fast WiFi and very clean. Nothing!
- Lewis (8/5): Very good -
- Lewis (9/5): Superb -
- Anonymous (9/5): Superb -
- Aruna (9/5): Superb -
- Cian (9/5): Superb -
- Sonia (7/5): cheap hostel. get what you pay for. - great location. great views of town and canopy from communal deck. bit dirty. especially the community kitchen.
- Mile (8/5): Cosy place for a short stay at good value - The place has a cosy and home-like vibe and it seems to cater for younger travellers. It is very easy to meet people in the common spaces around the hostel. The terrace has a very nice view with a hammock (especially on a clear day). They serve a simple and nice breakfast (fruit, pancakes, coffee). The staff is lovely when it comes to offering advice about things to do and tours (there is a nice booklet with a description of all the tours available) and offers to help with this even last minute. And there is a bus stop for going to the Monteverde Cloud Forest right around the corner. When I arrived, they told me there was no available bed even though I made a booking (apparently because of overbooking). I insisted that I should be accommodated, so they were nice and gave me a single room (that is normally for emergencies) for the first night. The next night I moved to another room with a private bathroom, but it had no door between it and the bathroom (only a curtain). Given it was a room shared with someone else, it would be noisy when one would flush the toilet or shower late at night.
- Maggy (10/5): Exceptional -
- Tomas (8/5): Very good - Good price, privat room, breakfest. Friendly and hopefully personal. Super vicinity. My room was smaller than was reservations and without windows.
- Benjamin (4/5): Disappointing -
- Sandrina (9/5): Superb - The host was amazing. She was very helpful and always there to answer questions or give suggestions. Every morning she made pancakes for everybody.
The place is good located. You get quickly to the center as well as to the bus station.
- Boothy3 (10/5): Exceptional - Yir is a great host and works so hard to make your stay a good one. Breakfast is good to start thr day off and it is close to the centre of town and supermarket. Always good vibes in the hostel in the evening cooking together and playing cards. Surprises in the morning when the coati and especially the monkeys turn up for there breakfast too
- Marie (8/5): Very good - Great staff, friendly cat, tasty breakfast and very close to center of town without all of the tourists. Lots if young ppl to socialize with Our room was next to the highway, making it hard to sleep at night. The rooster would crow very early in the morning every morning. No big deal for us since we were expecting to be up early in the morning, but if you're looking for a great night's rest, I wouldn't suggest here.
- Katharina (8/5): Very good -
- Paul (9/5): Superb -
- Natalia (8/5): cozy and friendly - Wooden house, terrace, super friendly atmosphere Very noisy during the night because of the wind. There are no sockets near the bed
- Ryan (9/5): Superb -
- Martyn (9/5): Superb -
- Wesley (10/5): Great hostel, no remarks - Really nice hostel. The host does a great effort in getting to know and help you. Also supports bringing the different guests together.
- Claudia (8/5): Nice place - Nice staff and common areas. Pretty view from the balcony. The noise from the wind. You could hear the roof making all kinds of noises. Also the window was by our head and you could feel and hear the wind blowing at night
- Monica (10/5): Exceptional - Super cute and cozy new hostel, with lovely and friendly staff.
Full kitchen equipment and speechless views from the terrace
- Patrick (1/5): Bad -
- Paulina (10/5): Exceptional -
- Christine (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lia (9/5): Superb - The value for money is incredible!!! The rooms, even the private rooms are really affordable and you get breakfast included! really cozy place to stay!
- Russell (8/5): Very good - Nice hostel! 5minutes walk from centre, good kitchen, good place to chill when raining, wi-fi ok, comfy beds, room wasn't hot so easy to sleep. All good for me!
- Tom (7/5): Good -
- Sorin (6/5): Recommend for backpacker’s on budget. - For young backpacker’s on budget it is a great place.
The shared kitchen was nice and created a meeting place. it was a very simple place. right on the road with out a yard.
- Pinkert (7/5): Good -
- Jia-huei (8/5): it was an ok hostel, cheap, you pay what you got - view from the balcony, free towel only one plug in a 4 beds dorm, bunk bed is squeaky quit loud, didn't have any sound proof inside the room
- Jamie (8/5): Very good -
- Simon (6/5): Pleasant - Helpful staff, decent self-service breakfast, nice view from balcony. It’s a decent central location but not the best if you want to be amongst nature. No door on the bathroom, shower drain smelled like sewage.
- Chirag (8/5): Great spot to stay if you want a chill environment with a cozy feel - Sometimes the power goes out so you may have some break in WiFi connectivity early in the morning
- James (6/5): Disappointed - Friendly staff,.great view Our room had no windows, and it's a very humid part of the country so the smell of damp was almost unbearable. The breakfast was some very bad white bread with jam and some mouldy bananas. There was no coffee made either
