Guest Reviews
- Byrne (9/5): - Thank you AB, for a very welcoming stay!!
- WorldGlobetrotter (7/5): They were responsive to messages for the organization of the stay, but the tours are too expensive. - The hostel is located in the main tourist street, but anyway San Ignacio is very small (and is also the only safe, at least during the day, place in Belize mainland). The hostel is fairly clean. There is no kitchen, just a fridge. Beds have big lockers underneath and all have privacy curtains. The hotelier was responsive to the messages on booking.com app prior to my arrival, which is very important for the organization of the stay: there is nothing to see in San Ignacio itself, you have to use this town as a base to explore the temples in the area, some of which can be visited also on you own, while for some others you need a tour (the hostel provides several of them, which have to be booked ahead). Bear in mind that no tours go to El Pilar as it is just way too risky for attacks, while the situation has improved for Caracol, for which no more armed car escorts tourist vans along the road like it was until the near past (of course the temple is still full of soldiers and the road is patrolled). Xunantunich can be reached by public bus (2,50$ each way) and you can go to Cahal Pech just on foot. I really discourage you from choosing the Tikal tour as it is much better to do it from Guatemala: you will spend much less money and you will spend much more time at the venue, which is really huge so you definitely need to stay there longer. The hostel sells also a tourist minibus to Flores, but you may use also the public transport (which is much cheaper, just know that in Guatemala you must take the public bus, which is right beyond the bridge after you exit the border control, and NEVER EVER take a taxi (it is paramount for your safety). Let’s underline the big problem: tour prices. The hostel will give you a discount with their friend tour company, but still the prices are simply crazy. They really take advantage of tourists! You spend a lot of money, but you won’t enjoy if you are not smart. ATM can be visited only with tours and it is super disappointing that you cannot take pics freely for fake reasons (the guide will tell you some lies, while the real reason is just some stupid politically correct nonsense and therefore you must take pics discreetly without what were supposed to be fellow tourists to become nasty snitches claiming their pretentious moral superiority or simply asking to do the same). I've been creating my props from scratch (for example out of a bra) when such things were not yet available on cheap Chinese e-commerce websites like now. I’m an OG, so don’t envy me just respect me. ;)
- Damon (10/5): Brilliant staff and location - Clean and had everything required. Near to good food was a bonus. Best thing was the staff and Javier is a genius and just great human being and nothing was too much trouble for him. Only staying one night…should have stayed at least two!
- Elizabeth (8/5): Very good - Good location. Lots places to eat. Great jerk chicken BBQ on the same road. Central, close to drop off. Living room type area. Good space for your stuff Basic but it's good value for money.
- Karen (10/5): Exceptional -
- Caoimhe (8/5): Nice and central - Kitchen was lovely, hammocks everywhere, comfortable beds, plenty of rooms. It was SO COLD, be warned they have a remote for the AC at reception so you can turn it down during the night. I literally couldn’t sleep, I felt I was in the North Pole in an ice age!
- Calvin (8/5): Excellent value. Friendly staff - Nice chilled environment, dorm rooms were clean. Close to main street & easy to explore the surrounding areas on foot. The bin in toilet could have been emptied daily but I am certain that if I asked the staff would have had obliged
- Taki (9/5): Superb - Good facilities and location really spacious. just limited kitchen utensils and gates are closed up early. Lockers under bed are huge. Good place to stop for a couple nights and staff are lovely + super helpful. Very chilled place.
- Rachel (6/5): Not the greatest of sleep given noise inside and outside. Pleasant staff and accessible to town. - Good location. Pleasant room. Pillows were lumpy and need to be replaced. One sheet on bed so it's either very hot or gets cold with a/c running.
Room off common area so noisy in the early morning and slamming doors at night echo.
Noise outside early in the morning coming in.
- Karen (10/5): Exceptional -
- Longsworth (10/5): Very comfortable and the location is perfect! - The location was convenient
- Kristi (9/5): I was relaxed and felt like I belonged. - The staff and atmosphere were extraordinary. San Ignacio is incredible. The mattresses could use a pad.
- Kukka-maria (8/5): Very good -
- Miriam (7/5): Good -
- Lali (7/5): Staff were the best bit! - The staff were incredibly friendly here, and the outdoor space was relaxing. Beds with curtains are a huge bonus and the WiFi was reliable. Great location for San Ignacio too, and I recommend the laundry service. (Though slightly more expensive than we’ve paid elsewhere.) Lots of beds to a dorm, and the water failed to work on one of our nights. Lots of people to share a bathroom with. The indoor shared area isn’t that well lit so can feel a bit down. The staff were way friendlier than any other of the backpackers staying….
- Christoph (9/5): Superb -
- Anoushka (6/5): Pleasant -
- Fred (8/5): Pleasant atmosphere with helpful staff. Quiet enough to relax in the evening - Very quiet but still close to everything Lock the inside door at night, my son who was out with next door hostel had to call me to unlock the door at 1am
- Pien (6/5): Pleasant - Location was perfect. A little kitchen to cook stuff, friendly personell but only 1 person working there at a time. Water and electricity problems about every day.
We had to jump the fence when we left because the gates were closed early in the morning.
- Qi (3/5): Receptionist charges 16% more for credit card use, no hot water - Each bunker bed has a curtain so you have some privacy. 1. The receptionist charges over 16% additionally for credit card. The original bill shall be 30, and she said she needs to charge additionally for credit card use, but I did not expect she would charge 35 in total. When I found out and asked for clarification, she just pretended she does not know the math.
2. No hot water in shower and bathroom is dirty and mouldy.
- Connor (8/5): Very good - Nice little spot right in the centre of san ignacio.
We spent a night here and it was great, the room was spacious, aircon was nice and cold.
The hosts let us leave our bags and hang out in the lobby after checkout while we waited for our bus to flores.
Would recommend. Rooms are very basic, could use some hooks on the walls to hang up clothes, towels etc.
- Sarah (1/5): Terrible - The one staff member was very rude and sexist towards our all female group compared to our friends. The bathrooms weren’t kept clean and the toilets often blocked. The showers also constantly overflowing and had no lights
- Andreas (8/5): Very good - Spacious dorms, good Aircon Not much going on, which was alright after we were three
- Francesca (9/5): Superb - Nice hostel. Location is close to bus stop and market. Lovely staff, particularly Marlin who helped us with our onwards transport to Guatemala. Walls quite thin if other guests talking late at night, but fine with ear plugs.
- Yanicab (9/5): Clean and great location! - Very clean and well kept, great location close to busbstop, supermarkets cafes and restaurants, super nice hosts and a lovely outdoor common area! Na
- Nomadicsilver (5/5): Passable -
- Michael (8/5): Very good -
- Yannick (8/5): Very good - I was alone in the dormitory
- Karen (10/5): Exceptional - It was so great talking with Javier the manager! He is very informative about what to do and even where to eat. They have a nice kitchen and a great hang out area inside and outside all in all a perfect experience! I will return
- Gretchen (10/5): Exceptional -
- Hildur (10/5): Super good - The guy working there is 11/10 - taught me Spanish, told me how to get to Flores by taxi + local bus + tuktuk, taxi 8Belizean dollars + bus 60 ketsalas + 10 ketsalas for tuktuk, a lot better and cheaper way than to take the tourist bus
- Anonymous (8/5): Very good - Convenience - very close to the centre of town. Javier was very friendly and happy to please. They also do tours. Comfortable open spaces with comfortable hammocks. It has so much potential to be more.
- Adam (5/5): So noisy - couldn't sleep - Good WiFi
Friendly staff (especially Blanca)
Hot shower
Good location
Air con So so noisy - couldn't sleep at all. Rooms face on to the common room and door seals let all sound through. No enforced quiet hours. G Adventure tour groups getting up at 5 in the morning making loads of noise. Football behind room is very loud (fire crackers and vuvuzelas) as the window does not close. Also you can hear laundry being done throughout the night.
Mattress in bedroom needs replacing as you can feel all the springs.
There is free water but it is an eco filter so when it runs out it takes ages to refill - and if there is a large G Adventures group then it runs out quickly.
Could add some hooks in the bedroom to hang towels on.
- Mary (9/5): Good value for money and good communication - We feel very special here
Kitchen is very usefull too /
- Nenagh (8/5): Nice place, good WiFi and location - Nice little hostel with private rooms. Rooms were decent size and had good aircon and WiFi. Free water and good kitchen was very helpful, location was good to the main town. Staff were lovely and helpful. The sound proofing is awful here and so you can always hear people talking etc. The hammocks in the shared area squeak when someone rocks in them, which is the most irritating sound ever and people would be in them until the early hours while we were trying to sleep. Staff were great but a little distant, we needed washing done but couldn’t find anyone.
- Shiel (7/5): Good -
- Kimberly (8/5): Great staff and love the common area to hang out with fellow travelers! - Xavier was so helpful and was always there when I needed something. Great common area to hang out and meet new friends. The hostel is quiet and it's right in the middle of everything. The location is perfect for grabbing street foods or something from the grocery stores near by. Will definitely recommend to solo travelers. The showers drain slowly but I was told by the other travelers it's the area, not the hostel. Tolerable.
- María (9/5): A place to rest - The staff was friendly and that place was clean
- Diana (10/5): Exceptional - Very good staff. Leyla was very helpful during the check in. And Javier helped me during my check out. He even catched the "right" taxi and I came very fast to to boarder. Javier gave me a lot of advices for my trip to Guatemala.
- Nishant (7/5): Good - Good location and clean room/shared bathroom. The price is pretty high for what you get. The environment is very sterile. Not a place that makes you want to stay very long.
- Evelyne (10/5): will definitely come back! - the staff are very helpful! both of them are very attentive Laila and the young man I forgot his name . the shower.
water couldn’t drain out.
little piscina around your feet.
Need improvement
- Janette (8/5): Quiet place with good A/C and friendly staff. - The A/C in the room worked very well. The place was quiet and had a nice outdoor seating area. The staff was extremely friendly, helpful and welcoming. There was not much air circulation in the common area because they only had windows on one side. The pillows and beds were not comfortable - hard, not much cushion. The women's showers did not drain well. (The men's did.)
- Luke (8/5): Very good -
- Tomas (7/5): Good - nice staff, very good location AC in the shared dorm was set for a really cold temperature, I was leaving with a sore throat
- Young (10/5): Exceptional - Good location, lovely staff and good kitchen, aircon at night
- Sarah (10/5): Would stay here again - Good location. Pretty garden with lots of plants and fairy lights. The common area could be made a little more comfortable. Javier was very friendly, had a lot of work to do and kept everything clean. The hostel can also arrange tours. There is free filtered water.
- Kieran (7/5): Good -
- Joaquim (9/5): Superb -
- Daniella (9/5): overall great! - rooms were very clean, as was the common areas, and they provide free water which was great! employees were wonderful and chatty and gave us tips of where to go! very central as well no hot water in some of the showers, not super cold though and as it’s so hot it was fine to shower in!
- Hayley (10/5): Excellent value for money in a great location - Great property right in the centre of San Ignacio, friendly staff, good kitchen and communal areas, friendly staff
- Ninni (10/5): Exceptional - Perfect location in the town, nice small kitchen and good beds. Good sized lockers and super nice crew!
- Sara (7/5): Good -
- Dan (6/5): Pleasant -
- Frank (8/5): Very good - Great location, friendly staff, clean and quiet, I liked it:) outdoor and common area needs improvement, it’s lacking of atmosphere amd hostel vibe:) only rock-hard wooden benches to sit on…
- Lauren (9/5): Superb - Javier is the best! He was very helpful with booking tours, or providing any kind of information. He made my stay very pleasant for a solo traveller. I did like the outdoor area, it would be cool if they could have a bar there. The showers were a bit too cold for me.
- Joseph (7/5): Good -
- Peter (10/5): Exceptional - Javier was a great host. He would always have a smile, helpful, talkative, friendly and mostly accommodating. You couldn't ask for a nicer guy. He hailed me a cab as I knew no Spanish, arranged for my outings. Knew the area both in Belize and Guatemala. Highly recommend this hostel entirely for the service and care demonstrated. Great job Javier.
- Ryunosuke (8/5): Very good - Staff is so kind and friendly
Thanks!
I enjoyed my stay
- Laurent (10/5): Exceptional - Let's say it straight, the property may not be the best you will see on your trip, but Javier Pereira, the manager, made it all! Service and kindness second to none, always ready to help, knowledgeable of all things around and able to do some magic on top of having an historical culture to give any of your Mayan questions answers.
If it wasn't for him I would probably not have left a review but the man deserves distinction. From a fellow hospitality worker I know it's a tough world, stay passionate as you are, thank you!
- Morghan (7/5): Wonderful staff, good hostel! - Hotel staff were amazing - this was probably my best experience with hostel staff of all the hostels I've stayed at as everyone was very friendly and helpful. Location is pretty convenient and the value for price was pretty spot on. I don't think the hostel was well set up for meeting people - the common area indoors is a bit sterile and not set up for hanging out, while the outside is nice but also not really maintained for guest interaction.
- Bartas (10/5): Exceptional - No hot water. Great location. Javier really made my stay extra special
- Ashley (9/5): Quiet, clean and conveniently located with very helpful staff. - Javier, the manager, is a real asset to this place. He helped me immensely. He knows all about the area--including Guatemala. Even when there r large tour groups, he will take the time to answer your questions....even late into the night when there are many people. Super client services! The air-con works so well, youll be asking staff to make the temp a lttle warmer.
- Kemii (6/5): Pleasant - Good location. Close to food, drinks, ATM's, taxis,, busses, market, and shopping. Cahal Pech Mayan ruins is a bit of a walk but doable (10bz entry) and you can stop by the Iguana Reserve on the way back (25bz I think it was). Very nice courtyard. Spacious bunk room and community area. Staff was very friendly. Wifi was horrible and slow. Kitchen has no refrigerator. A hostel that sleeps that many should have a full size refrigerator. Noisy due to every sound echoing. Thin walls and can hear snoring from room next door and their conversation at 3am. Concrete in shower floors and doesn't drain well. Water temp after reaching way up to turn main water on was pleasant once you recover from the blast of cold water. Would not stay here again. This is the first time I've left a negative review.
- Noémie (9/5): Superb -
- Maria (4/5): uncharming - good location not cosy. lights in the common area were of at night. no hot water. just a creepy place and not it’s moneys worth.
- Mcdonald (10/5): Exceptional - Very helpful staff. Was very comfortable Nothing
- Fleming (7/5): Almost great - Very clean, good WIFI, and great location. The manager Javier is very friendly, and was fun to chat with. The hot water didn't work in my private room. Javier attempted to fix during my stay, but ultimately it didn't get fixed before I left. Used dorm shower, which was OK. If using dorm facilities, room should be discounted accordingly.
- Fabian (9/5): Superb - Very nice and helpful owner. Had some nice chats!
- Callie (7/5): Good location for a night or 2 - Good location and nice to have access to a small kitchen. We had a new mattress which was nice. The wifi was hit and miss and all rooms open onto the common area so it can be really loud!!
- Florian (9/5): Superb - Clean, comfy, good price and Havir is the best manager ever. Super friendly, helps you with everything. Highly recommend!
- John (7/5): Good - location is excellent.
Was given a whole dorm to myself. Appears to have lots of groups of guided tourists.
I found staff a little odd - very helpful one minute and then quite strange the next.
- Moncef (8/5): Very good - Javier was the best
- Elnaz (4/5): Disappointing - Aircon and location The bed, bathroom and especially the shower and you can't pay via the card only cash (so carry it on you if you choose the place)
- Imogen (2/5): Cancelled last minute - Booking initially approved but then cancelled via email the night before I was due to stay. However, I was traveling all morning the day of my stay in San Ignacio so did not have internet so didn't see the email. Turned up to find the place closed and had to waste a lot of the afternoon looking for somewhere else to stay. Could have at least sent a WhatsApp or text to check I'd seen the email.
- Thom (9/5): we had a really nice stay here! - the employee was really nice and welcoming. nothing
- Scott (8/5): Very good -
