Guest Reviews
- Jason (10/5): -
- Veronica (9/5): A confortable hotel above a pub-restaurant in an excellent location. - Location is excellent, quite near the railway station and just where the town centre proper begins, so very near to major tourist attractions, shops, and facilities. Great view of the Westgate from the window, but although so close to the town centre it was very quiet and peaceful.
Rooms were extremely spacious, almost a suite, and comfortable.
Nice breakfast which was part of the package. The stairs are quite steep, no lift, so quite a long climb to the upper floors-it's the price you pay for the view. It didn't bother us unduly, but it would not be for anyone with limited mobility. But this is well known I think, as people we talked to who'd met guests who stayed there remarked on it.
- Cathy (9/5): Great location and good price - This room was above a pub which we thought may be noisy , but it was not at all.
The parking was a bit of a pain but being so close to the centre of Winchester was worth having park a little away.
Breakfast was great The noise from the other rooms was a bit loud but would not stop us staying here again

- Karen (8/5): Lovely stay. Would recommend - Excellent location. Such a cosy environment. Lovely food & great atmosphere. Room a bit on the small side, & shower needed upgrading.
- Virginia (8/5): OK Pub Hotel in Good Location - Good breakfast. Room was clean. Location was good for walking into the city center. Not for elderly or someone with a bad leg, but if you dont mind the stairs and dont have much luggage, it's fine. Also close to train station although we were driving. We were on 5th floor, which was a bit of a climb with luggage. Parking was a ways away in city garage. Awkward to unload luggage near the hotel.
- Steven (8/5): One night in Winchester. Good hotel, great dinner. - Breakfast was a good selection (buffet and/or ordered from the menu). Location is convenient to the Cathedral (5 min walk). Parking was available right outside, but if needed a lot was < 5 minute walk away. Lots of good restaurants just down the hill. Can certainly recommend Bottega del Mastro on Parchment St. Food was excellent!!! Tough to move luggage up the stairs and through the narrow hallways but that is how it is for an old building in England. No lift. Would be very difficult for anyone who struggles with stairs. The stairs also lean a little (quaint, but you have to be mindful). Some of the bedroom doors have up to an inch gap in the bottom of them. Floors creak, so you will hear your neighbors. Just different, but not necessarily bad.
- Andy (8/5): Nicely decorated Rooms above nice pub - Clean rooms and nice decor. Friendly staff Breakfast wasn’t the best. Staircases very tight fr carrying things up
- David (8/5): We wanted one nights accommodation for a concert. This property was in an excellent and interesting location not far fro - It location close to a venue we wanted to visit. Not much the room was not very large but for one night perfect.

- Antea (10/5): - Una camera deliziosa in posizione eccellente per visitare la città e i dintorni. Staff gentile, colazione ottima così come anche la cena. Camera pulita e ben servita. Oltre le nostre aspettative!
- Lin (8/5): - Great location and a friendly staff Our room, #5, was a sauna. Even with the window open and the fan on, that room never cooled down and there was no AC. The bed needed a sheet under the comforter to allow the comforter to be removed when it's that hot. But otherwise, no other concerns
- Yana (9/5): -
- Miguel (10/5): -
- Alan (8/5): - Music from the bar was very loud until very late.
- Cristine (7/5): Well located, comfortable hotel with delicious breakfast. - Fabulous location. Held our bags early so we could go on a tour. Delicious breakfast made to order. Stairs were narrow and difficult. No A/C and there was no place to put toiletries.
- Angela (9/5): Great location, excellent food. nice staff. - Older building with modernised rooms. Good sized room with smaller bathroom. Character rooms. Hallways are suffering a little but that is not where you stay 😊Breakfast was good with a nice selection of hot & cold options including tea, coffee. The staff at breakfast were great! Location is excellent right next to the historic High St, The Great Hall and Westgate. 6 minute walk from train station with bag in tow. Rooms are above the Bar & Restaurant. Had dinner once & it was excellent. Small outside patio. If I'm picky. Rooms are very warm. There is a small air con/heater in the room though. The hallways were very smelly but I think they may have had a leak. No lift & skinny stairways but still manageable to get the suitcase up. The room was a bit dusty.
- Ciaran (10/5): Perfect little stay - Great location

- Cathy (9/5): A quiet, clean, well situated place to stay. - This hotel was no more than a ten minute walk (uphill mind you) from the train station, but an easy walk back down when I left. My room was on the third floor above the pub so I didn't notice any noise from it. At check in someone happily hauled my suitcase up to my room for me. The breakfast was great. My room had two big windows that looked out over the old Westgate! It was lit up at night and was lovely. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom modern and clean. It was also a quick walk over to the Great Hall and the Round Table. It was an easy walk to the main centre of town and the paths out along the River Itchen to St. Catherine's Hill. I was very happy with my stay and would certainly stay here again.
- Summer (10/5): An excellent place that I would love to visit again. - Beautiful rooms which were comfy and well decorated, and also had an excellent view of Winchester. The staff were friendly and accommodating. The breakfast was one of the nicest I've had - fresh ingredients and very well seasoned.
- Gilles (10/5): Aanrader! - Goede sfeer, gastvrije ontvangst door Adrian, fijn bed, gezellige kamer, lekker eten, en op loopafstand van het station en het centrum. Te lage waterdruk in de douche.
- Joan (8/5): Great place to stay to see Winchester. - Breakfast and location were both good. The coffee was excellent and staff was helpful and friendly. Would have appreciated whole grain items for breakfast.
- Katrin (10/5): - Super nice place with great stuff. The food was really good and we enjoyed the stay.
- Anne (10/5): The best pub we have stayed in or eaten in. - Everything Nothing
- Stephen (6/5): Okay - 3 flights of narrow stairs no parking outside hotel
- Билень (10/5): -
- Louise (8/5): Lovely quirky room with stunning breakfast in a really nice pub situated very convenientl at the top - Room was lovely even if slightly small. And the location is perfect for both the train station and also to explore town. The pub downstairs is also really nice and staff very friendly and we had a wonderful breakfast in the morning!!! Room was too warm as no fan or air conditioning. Also think we mistakenly 'ate' the dog biscuits as the jar was not labeled but the biscuits were rock hard and tasteless - apologies if they were meant for us though!!
- Deborah (10/5): Lovely staff, excellent food, comfortable bed - Characterful and it’s location Not much shelf space in the bathroom
- Raymond (9/5): -
- Annamaria (9/5): -
- Nor Fadzilah Sulaiman (8/5): Will stay here again. - The location.
The decor in the room is cosy and homely.
The bed is comfortable and warm. Nothing
- Lily (9/5): -
- Christine (8/5): I wished I had another night! - Beautifully colored rooms, most comfortable bed, clean linen and room. I got breakfast on my package- I loved that! The morning staff could be more helpful with directing especially first time guests on how breakfast works. Was a little bit confusing.
- Cynthia (10/5): -
- Daniela (8/5): -
- oliver (10/5): Great location and very comfortable - General feel was warm and welcoming.. food was excellent and staff were great No parking
- Amanda (9/5): -
- Thomas (10/5): -

- Hanneah (7/5): Convenient and comfortable place to stay in Winchester - Really nice spacious room with great view of old Winchester history and a comfy bed. Very central location with a 5 minute walk to train station. Really low shower pressure. Quite loud at night as we stayed on quiz night.
- Paul (8/5): Very nice stay, lovely helpful staff - Nice pub in a central location. Breakfast was very good with an excellent selection. Nice big room with view. The room was up 2 flights of very narrow steep stairs. I do not think this was in the description, if it was apologies.
- Chris (7/5): - The shower wasnt very good
- Liam (10/5): - Generous breakfast (V tasty!), comfortable and spacious room, very friendly staff. 100% recommend.
- Lee (9/5): -
- Jon (8/5): Lovely place, would visit again for sure - Great location, great staff, great food The pillows! Too big/fat :-)
- Kate (10/5): - Great location and excellent breakfast Nothing 👍
- Jon (10/5): Fantastic location, rooms & food. - Great location. Great breakfast included. Good atmosphere. Shower a bit small
- M Knight (9/5): -
- Helen (10/5): Perfect location and stay! Highly recommend - Beautiful room and service was outstanding Location was perfect
- Luigi (9/5): -
- Rachel (9/5): Cozy pub aesthetic with great breakfast - Perfect central location. The room was very cute - beautiful decor and made the best use of space. I liked that this felt different from a hotel (in a good way). We booked with breakfast and were very pleased with the quality and options. The breakfast reviews were what made me choose this over alternative accommodation. Overall, I would recommend and stay here again! This didn’t bother me but a consideration for others… this is an accommodation above a pub, so there is some noise. My teens and I stayed here on trivia night and were on the floor closest to the pub, but we fell asleep just fine and slept great. If you are a light or particular sleeper, this might not work for you.
- Jody (10/5): Ideal. - The Westgate Hotel was a great choice to stay. It was very handy for all of the main sites in Winchester, bring over the road from the Great Hall and the museum at the Westgate and only a 5 minute to the old city centre and a 10 minute walk to the Cathedral.
The main photo shows our room. It was an amazing room, with a great atmosphere.
The bed was one of the comfiest I have slept in. The stairs would have been a bit tricky to navigate, but a member of staff carried our bags up for us.
- Annette (9/5): So good we stayed the following night - Food was excellent Staff cheerful and helpful Location was perfect
- David (8/5): Fantastic time, good value for money, great location. - Great room, clean. Friendly staff and fantastic location Only criticism is that the shower pressure could be better and no shelves in bathroom for storing toiletries.
Dead bolt on door would be a nice to have. (Single traveller)
- Martine (10/5): Exceptional stay. - The staff were friendly, the bar was amazing and the rooms were stunning. Food was exceptional. There was nothing I didn't like.
- Anne-Marie (10/5): -
- Graham (8/5): Great location and friendly. - A great location. A short walk from the station and ideally placed for exploring Winchester.
Excellent breakfast and a decent pint to be had! The staff were friendly and helpful. Not an issue for us, but some people might find the staircase a bit tight.
- Katie (7/5): -
- Mark (10/5): - Size of the room, cleanliness and above all, the staff - helped us with the luggage due to the stairs. Love the decor :) Would have loved to try the breakfast but we had to leave before 8am
- Tim (9/5): -
- Le Tissier (7/5): -
- Stephen (10/5): - Great location, room and breakfast. Stagff exceptional
- Danielle (8/5): -
- Christopher (8/5): Superb breakfast, lovely staff, great pub, super location - Location, clean, nice treat for dogs, comfy bed, super Stairs quite steep but that’s the building!
- Mélanie (10/5): - Camere con arredamento molto bello in style British. Situato sopra il pub che è altrettanto bello e dove abbiamo mangiato molto bene sia di sera che a colazione (prodotti di qualità)!
- Kirsty (10/5): Lovely! - Welcoming, lovely place, great location, nice views, good food and drinks, breakfast v nice, quiet warm bar and restaurant - as a lone traveller I didn’t feel peered at Nothing

- Sandy Harbanuk (10/5): Wonderful hotel; great base for exploring Winchester. - The Westgate is in an excellent location for exploring Winchester's history. The hotel is comfortable, clean, quiet, and has friendly and helpful staff. I appreciated that breakfast was included with the room and the breakfast choices were varied and quite good. I also ate dinner in the pub; the meals were excellent. I enjoyed all of the artwork around the pub - it has a very cozy, attractive feel. Everything was fine, nothing to criticize.
- Clare (9/5): -
- Delmar (8/5): - The room was very clean and comfortable. Traffic outside was a bit noisy, but it was expected.
- Michael (9/5): Lovely - Clean, comfortable and great location Room was a bit warm but I’m used to sleeping in a room without heating

- Dan (10/5): Outstanding small hotel - Rooms are spotless, and very well appointed. Beds comfy and the breakfast was fantastic. Can't fault it and thoroughly recommend. nothing
- Isabel (10/5): Delightful - The bed is so comfortable, the towels are so soft, the coffee is delicious, and so is the breakfast. I love the cosy vibe of the room and the vibe of the breakfast area - it's very classy. There was a strange smell on the first flight of stairs.
- Emma (8/5): A good place to stay - Nice decor, fantastic breakfast, great central location. My room was on the third (top) floor - a long way up with two bags and several fire doors to negotiate, but luckily didn't need to do it too many times.
- King (10/5): -
- Ralf (10/5): Tolles Hotel - Tolle Zimmer und gute Lage
- Sandra (9/5): - Lovely room
Lots of personal details
- Higgins (10/5): Warm and comfortable with pleasant staff - Varied choice and plentiful Nothing warm and comfotable
- simon (10/5): -
- Margaret (9/5): Great location in downtown Winchester - Great location and breakfast. Room was comfy, updated and spacious The stairs are a bit narrow when carrying up our bag but manageable
- Tim (8/5): Great price, delightful venue in a superb location for town - Great location. Don’t be put off that it’s above a pub or on a street corner. The snack selection was fantastic and although chargeable, prices were sensible. Bed very bed comfy. Lovely decor in our room. Breakfast great too as a included in our price but at £13 a head may be a little expensive if you’re paying it as an extra As it was a windy night the swinging pub sign outside our window kept knocking regularly but not too much to stop sleep.
- Daniel (8/5): Well above average pub rooms, in a location that couldn’t be much more central - Excellent breakfast, friendly staff, The Westgate is a busy and well run establishment Bathroom could use some maintenance, leaky shower, no functioning extractor fan
- Sarie (9/5): -
- Margaret (10/5): Number one for Winchester - The vibe was great. Within walking distance of centre of town. The room is very spacious and clean. Bed very comfortable. Lots of extras like face clothes and body lotion. Also, chocolate and savoury snacks in room that you could consume and pay for later. Late checkup standard and fab breakfast serviced until 10.30. Stairs to rooms uneven, which could be a problem if people had a walking disability
- Sharron (8/5): -
- Karen (8/5): Enjoyed but stairs were a problem - Breakfast great Stairs not good
- Teela (10/5): Lovely stay in winchester - Beautiful big clean room in great location Everything was great
