Guest Reviews
- Andrew (10/5): Host was absolutely tremendous- thank you so much. - Very spacious and great location to the local town.
Dog friendly Nothing - all good
- William (8/5): -
- Lynne (7/5): -
- Joanne (1/5): Not able to stay as already had people in it! - We arrived to find someone already in the property! The owners were apologetic but we had to find somewhere else to stay after a 5 hour drive
- Janet (10/5): - Quiet location. Lovely cottage.
- Carol (10/5): -
- Michelle (10/5): - The whole place was just so relaxing, clean, and nicely put together
I have a SEN Child and fitted perfectly!!
Throughly enjoyed the experience!! Would definitely book again! The only thing I can honestly say is: could have a thicker duvet during the winter, but we were not cold at all!!
So, a seasonal change? If I had to pick anything
- Smith (5/5): -
- Ashley Joseph (10/5): Home away from home - After reading the reviews I saw a lot of negative, about the stairs and little bits, but that’s what makes a cottage so special, this place is a diamond and I can safely say iv found my home away from home, will definitely be booking again, thank you for letting me and my boy Rex spend the new year here and will continue to book for trips to the north east, heaven on earth. Nothing beautiful home
- Amy (8/5): -
- Joanna (8/5): Lovely cosy cottage - Lovely cottage and only a 15 min walk into Alnwick. The host was lovely and had great communication. Had pretty much everything we needed, very cosy for our little Christmas away! Thank you for a lovely stay! Overall, we had a nice stay, but there were just a few small things that could be improved. The duvet in the main bedroom was quite thin, so we used one from a spare room as extra. We also found that some of the glasses, cups, and pans needed re-washing, so a quick double-check after cleaning could help.
A proper washing-up sponge and an extra tea towel would have been useful, as we needed to buy a sponge ourselves. The Prosecco glasses appeared to be left over from a previous hen party, as they had names on them, so having standard, matching glasses would be a nice touch as we used these for our Christmas dinner.
These were only little things and didn’t negatively affect our stay, but addressing them would help make the experience even better for future guests.
- Lisa (7/5): Great location in a beautiful place but needs some TLC - The property was in a fantastic location which made it easy to explore Alnwick and surrounding areas. It’s a quaint little cottage that has lots of really lovely features and huge potential. The property (as it is old) naturally took a while to warm up. This was made trickier by the kitchen and main bedroom radiators not getting warm so we bought a heater so we were comfortable. The rest of the cottage was toasty though.
A few essentials were missing such as a dish cloth and the cleaner had not checked if the pots and utensils were clean after the last visitors so we ended up washing most of what we used first. The property is obviously newly decorated and masking tape was still visible and hanging off around most of the upstairs doors and grout was smeared around the shower tiles. The towels and bedding could also do with replacing. The stairs (can’t be helped due to the age of the building) are steep and could be an issue with children/elderly. Access to the property is also dimly lit and very uneven so care does need to be taken.
Access to the property (driveway and back gate) was accessed by the owner during our stay and a heads up would have been appreciated. Also it could benefit from blinds being fitted to two of the windows that left us feeling quite exposed.
- Caroline (7/5): Would book again if the mattress was renewed - The location was great and it was warm and welcoming The mattress on the bed in the single en suite room was the must uncomfortable I’ve ever had.
- Sandra (10/5): Such a lovely, cosy, well equipped place to base ourselves for exploring the area. Would love to have stayed longer! - Clean, cosy, convenient, well equipped Nothing!
- Leanne (10/5): Beautiful cottage, great location - Absolutely beautiful cottage in a perfect location. Really nicely furnished, spotlessly clean, warm and cosy
Hoping to return next year and would definitely recommend
- Anna (9/5): - Lovely quiet location, it felt homely and clean.
- Isla (9/5): - Excellent location and a beautiful cosy cottage! The host was so attentive to our needs. Top class. Can't wait to visit again in the spring hopefully.
- Kenneth (9/5): Cosy cottage stay - Great communication, lovely comfy stay.
- Jackie (6/5): - The cottage was in a very nice area and other than the beds, the furnishing was comfortable. It was good for us because we had a dog with us and the outside area was safely enclosed. Housekeeping wasn't good. Many of the light bulbs were blown. The cooker wasn't connected to the electricity. The beds were very lumpy. Washing had been left in the tumble dryer. Could have done with a hair dryer and slip mat in the bath.
- ROMAN (9/5): Flying visit to Alnwick - We stayed in Mews cottage.
Family of four in open plan accommodation.
Very cosy. Everything worked and all kitted out well.
Superb location for town and coastal route.. A bit of confusion on which cottage we were staying in initially, but this was sorted quickly.
Only one large bedroom but downstairs sofa bed and toilet worked for us.
- Carolyn (6/5): Alnwick is amazing but the property was disappointing. - The location and carpeting were great The kitchen was poorly equipped.
The freezer was iced up.
The small bedrooms had no windows.
The smallest bedroom was more like a cupboard, with no bedside table or lamp. There was a hole in the wall in the smallest room and the bed wasn’t made up leaving that room difficult to stay in for one night if our two night stay.
There were light bulbs missing from many rooms in the house.
The window in the downstairs toilet was permanently open and thus a security risk.
The garden furniture was rickety.
Finally, the picture on the website are misleading. The double bedroom is presented with different bedding making it appear to be two doubles rather than one.
- cressida (6/5): -
- Stephen (1/5): Alnwick and surrounding areas are beautiful but our stay was spoilt because of the condition of cottage. - Good car parking Stinking over flowing bin and no bottle recycling box.
Broken garden bench.
Dog poo all over gravel patio.
Damp mouldy smell when entering property.
Freezer completely iced up.
No windows in two bedrooms.
One bedroom had only room for single bed
nothing else was like a cupboard.
No blind on landing windows no privacy.
- Joe (6/5): Comfortable property, excellent location but could be cleaner and facilities lacking - Location is excellent - very quiet, close to main tourist attractions and a 15/20 minute walk to Alnwick centre.
Comfortable lounge and beds
Three bathrooms
Two good size bedrooms The property was not the cleanest, especially the kitchen - the floor was bad.
Not enough cooking equipment (one knife, one chopping board, no scissors, no grater etc)
3rd bedroom is a cupboard - very small with no window
- Pyl (10/5): Great and charming old house very close to Alnwick centre. - It’s a very charming old house that’s very well located in Alnwick. Quietly, just outside the centre, but within walking distance to it (20-25 min walk to the centre and the castle). So you can leave the car on the spacious and free parking at the cottage when visiting Alnwick. For dog owners; the courtyard is completely closed so you can leave your dog outside in all security. Luxury problem; you don’t have a dishwasher. Made me and my family talking again during the dishes which was nice quality time again 😉.
- Caroline (5/5): A lovely cottage but sadly in need of some more effort to make this comfortbale and enjoyable place to stay - Peaceful location, spacious off street parking, large smart TV, spacious living room Musty smell
Poorly equipped kitchen
Dirty bed linen (polyester)
Bathroom floor broken
Difficult to use shower
2nd and 3rd bedrooms no windows, no bedside lamps
No lamp in living room and ceiling lights missing light bulbs
No lampshade or effort made to improve the 3rd bedroom, which felt like a prison cell
No hooks/storage for personal items
Lack of seating in living room - plenty of space for additional furniture
Barking dog at night living at house behind
- Ilse (9/5): - Ruime cottage. Sfeervol. Op loopafstand van kasteel en interessante boekwinkel.
- Melanie (10/5): Highly recommended - Clean , spacious , great location , and dog friendly
- Stacey (8/5): First family trip with baby - The cottage was very spacious, we are family with our 4 month old and 2 Labradors and there was more than enough room for us all; the cottage was well facilitated and furnished to accommodate us and be very comfortable.
Having read previous reviews I was worried about the cleanliness however we didn't find that to be an issue.
The host was in touch directly once we had checked in to check everything was OK and again once we had left. They were open to any feedback we gave and made it feel very welcoming.
The location of the cottage was perfect for us with short drives to the areas we wanted to visit and supermarkets just minutes away. The stairs up to the bedroom are steep, this obviously cannot be helped as it is an old converted cottage with tall ceilings but as I had my 4 month old it was a challenge.
The gate to the courtyard opens inwards and onto steps so you need to be very careful when leaving to make sure you don't lose your footing and fall back down the step.
- Larkin (8/5): Very good - It had everything we needed for a two night stay.
Plenty of room for more than us two.
10 minute walk into town. £5 for an uber if it rains.
Nice and quiet location. Next doors dog barking at every opportunity! Rather annoying.
- Lar (8/5): Very good -
- Laurie (10/5): Beautiful, peaceful, fun stay. - Clean and spacious, quiet and beautiful surroundings
Fab courtyard, sun trap. 3rd bedroom quite small, however, it wouldn’t put me off booking again
- Keith (9/5): An enjoyable stay and a happy wife do not need to say any more !! - A conveniently situated property in a pleasant location with car parking.
- Sarah (4/5): Such a shame..... - Great location. Ground floor is well laid out and comfortable and the main bedroom is large and well appointed.
Very good Hive heating system. The entrance gate was broken and difficult to open/close, leading to steps which would be easy to step back off whilst trying to close the gate.
The large bins below the steps were overflowing and clearly hadn't been emptied in weeks.
The sunny courtyard was private and could have been lovely apart from the knee high weeds.
Whilst the ground floor is well laid out and comfortable, the crockery, cutlery and glassware were a random selection of oddments and insufficient for full occupancy. The laminate on the floor in front of the fridge had holes in it, and the freezer was entirely frosted requiring a thorough de-frost if it were to be used.
The kitchen cupboards had a selection of empty boxes for things such as the cafetiere, which incidentally had a broken lid. There was also left over foods and cereals in unsealed packages, which we certainly did not want to try!
There was no "welcome information pack" of any type and not even a pint of milk in the fridge.
We booked this for a group of 3 friends as it is advertised as a 3 bed property.
The master bedroom is a great size and if you overlook the wardrobe of random stuff, including a small plastic Christmas tree thrown in on top of a bag of goodness knows what (??) it was a very good room.
Bedroom 2 was an "en-suite' single, however the shower didn't work, and the door knob came away in the hand of the occupant trapping them in the room! The room has no window and is a bleak, drab space with a single bed, a bedside table and nothing else, not even a bedside lamp.
Bedroom 3, it transpired, was so small that it had to be accessed via a folding cupboard style door and this also had no window, the space was entirely filled by a single bed and was even darker + dingier than bed 2.
Sadly.one of our party had to drop out, however it was probably a good thing as I very much doubt that anybody would want to sleep in there.
- Ravinder (10/5): Lovely! - Great, clean, spacious house with comfy beds & everything you might need
- Nick (8/5): Comfortable stay with some lacking items that would have improved our stay. - A comfortable cottage with a decently equipped kitchen and a nice living room. Overall the cottage just needs a little bit of TLC to make it stand out. One of the 3 bedrooms was very small although that was as listed and there were a number of small items not present that would have improved our stay,.such as chairs in the bedrooms,.a bath mat in one bathroom, no non slip mats, teaspoons and a broken.cafatiere
- Luke (10/5): Exceptional -
- Cindy (9/5): It was lovely to be in the country! - We enjoyed having to stay in a cottage and able to use kitchen facilities, tv and wifi a must as we were able to rest after our excursions. We arrived by Uber, and it was a little difficult to see where the cottage was as it was late when we arrived. There was floor damage by the main shower, but we made sure we put the rug over it and wiped down the shower so it did not contribute to the damage.
- Vanessa (8/5): Very good -
- Tk (1/5): Shocking - We arrived at Courtyard Cottage late afternoon to find the property had not been cleaned. Beds were made, but with dirty bodily fluid stained sheets on all 3 beds, they had not been washed . Bins hadn't been emptied. Cobwebs everywhere. There is no light working at the entrance. Reported, not fixed.
We rang the owner, Sadie. She apologised but did absolutely nothing to help us and said she hadnt had this issue before. We ended up washing and drying the bedding ourselves and borrowing some from the Mews cottage she owned next door which was also dirty , the owner had the cheek to ask us to go and get this and return it clean for next guests ! Could not make this up.
I found rubbish by bedside tables and dirty tissues behind my headboard. Couldn't use the wardrobe as was full of dead bugs and cobwebs.
The kitchen was a joke, the bottom oven didn't work and it was so basic you had just about enough to make a sandwich!
We spent the first 2 days cleaning . No one offered to come and clean for us or sort any linen out. Instead we just got a snotty message from the owner saying we could just leave and she would ring booking.com However reading other reviews we'd found online on Sykes Cottages , these issues were raised before by other guests so we knew she was a liar hence keeping all my contact with her strictly via messages for proof I used against her with booking.com who have kindly refunded me a night NOT the owner . You should be ashamed of yourself, and I will make sure this review is on every review page possible . Shame, as it's a lovely cottage, but unfortunately it's owner is incompetent.
We also noticed rats outside by the bins . We had to laugh, really !
The spare 3rd bedroom is more like a cupboard with a disgusting stain on the wall.
The main bathroom floor is so dangerous by the bath , it's giving way.
The Cottage is on a new estate relatively quiet, and parking is on the gravel outside, which was handy .
- Katie (9/5): Lovely cottage in a great location - Lovely cottage in a great area, close enough to walk into Alnwick.
The cottage is spacious and has everything you need.
The communication with the vendor was very good
- Leonard (10/5): Courtyard Cottage, Alnwick - Great location, cottage was clean and tidy, owners very helpful, perfect for a short or long stay.
- Laura (9/5): Very enjoyable stay in a nice cottage - Very warm cosy cottage in a nice location
Beautiful town nearby
Gorgeous beach very close too Everything was ok
- Martin (10/5): Excellent location - Plenty space and comfortable stay and ideal for our stay for the location Only thing I would have liked would have been a lamp in the living room on a night time.
- Paul (8/5): Plenty of room - Plenty of room. Two bathrooms plus a downstairs toilet. Dog friendly with a secure garden. Quiet area. Stairs from ground to first floor are a bit steep.
- Louise (10/5): Exceptional - The house was fabulous there was plenty space and it was a lovely cosy cottage. It was also located in the heart of Alnwick. Perfect for our little family vacation. Would highly recommend thanks 😊
- Hannah (10/5): Cozy, comfy, friendly and very welcoming - Amazing location, and very spacious for 4 girls getting ready for a wedding. The host was in contact with us to make sure everything was okay which of course it was. The cottage was equipped with tea and coffee so no need for us to buy any. Everything was perfect and cozy
- Jenny (9/5): Great location, cosy cottage - Ideal location for the delights of Northumberland and easy to find. Lovely cosy feel to the cottage. Very well equipped and furnished. Brilliant having two bathrooms. Very good communication from the owner prior to our arrival. Having good WiFi was helpful to enable us to look for restaurants and making plans. Not sure I can think of anything!
- David (10/5): Exceptional - warm and comfortable, with all you need for a short stay. parking right outside and well located.
- Alison (8/5): A comfortable, quiet haven for a small family with a dog. - The cottage has a private entrance accessed through an enclosed courtyard, which was great for our dog. Although on the edge of a modern development it was incredibly quiet. The cottage was beautifully clean and we had full control of the heating thermostat. The temperature was rapidly responsive so the property was soon warm and cosy. The host was excellent and keen to hear advice on possible improvements. Previous reviews have commented on the glass in the bathroom door. This problem has now been solved with a frosted covering. Alnwick is a beautiful village, very well worth visiting. As other reviewers have said, the two single bedrooms are window-less, but there is nothing the owner can do about that. In the larger of the two rooms this really didn't matter as it had an en-suite with a window. The smaller room had a semi-transparent door onto the landing, which does have natural light. Both rooms have good sized single beds, which were very comfortable, but that made the smaller room too tight for any additional furniture. There is no dishwasher but the kitchen is otherwise well equipped.
- Tina (8/5): Very good - It was clean and spacious. Close to where we needed to be for a wedding . Pans we're a bit worn but had everything ypu would need .
- Anthony (6/5): An excellent location with plenty to do. The property had pros and cons and would benefit from an upgrade of bed linen a - Location was very convenient for town centre, castle, gardens, restaurants. Many places of interest within easy reach. Parking on the street was easy, convenient and safe. A 20 minute stroll to the town was much better than taking the car always. See through bathroom / toilet door was very strange. In my view this would make the property unsuitable for non family groups or families with older children. A simple solution would be a blind. Whilst not important to us as a couple travelling alone the single bedroom has room for a bed only with very little space around it and no room for any furniture. Also there is no window in the room.
- Anne (8/5): Very good - Comfortable and met our needs. Great location for visiting Alnwick and nearby coast. Could be great with minor tweaks such as a lamp in the lounge and outside lighting near the steps.
- Jamie (7/5): Good -
- Carole (4/5): Disappointing, host appeared to be responsive but needed Booking.com to resolve issues - location was good Felt uncomfortable on arrival as there was a unsecured ground floor window (this was resolved during our stay after requesting, we needed to stay in for handyman to attend)
Broken toilet seat, and another broken toilet this was not fixable during our stay
Unwanted visitors, mice, for which after many messages we shortened our stay by one night, the promised refund for this has eventually been resolved via booking.com (one month later), after being told and assured by the host numerous times this was imminently on its way to our bank account (it never arrived via host)
No introductory information pack about anything in the property, for example asked for help re TV use this was not resolved during our stay
Property was not as described in write up, for example parking
- Anne (7/5): Good - Perfectly located for walking into Alnwick and exploring wider afield by car.
- Katherine (8/5): lovely stay would go back again - spacious and a nice walk to the castle was a lovely stay just missing a lamp in the living room but we just took one front yhe bedroom
- Lynette (7/5): A great location, just improve the privacy aspects. - Great location for visiting in and around Alnwick. Useful information about local places to eat. The privacy in both of the bathrooms was poor - transparent windows and doors with no blinds or curtains.
- Richardd69 (5/5): Not a great stay unfortunately - Location was good Unfortunately, I find myself leaving a negative review which is always hard to write. We appeared to be one of the first to stay here for 2 nights and I believe the property was not ready. There was missing T-Towels, lack of cutlery, there needs to be a blind or something at the toilet and en-suite windows, we could not turn the fire on as the lead was too short, the TV did not work, the front gate was hanging off and no lights at night to guide you to the door which was dangerous. To top it all we had mice, my son left his sweets on the kitchen table and they were literally eaten. To be fair we reported all this, and the host said they would fix all of it and refund us a night, but this did not happen.
- Eva (8/5): Comfortable and spacious - beware of the stairs - The house is tucked away at the entrance to a rather new development. From one side of the house you overlook the development the other side looks into the neglected yard. The location is good - very close to Alnwick. Overall the house was clean and tastefully furnished. The living area is spacious and comfortable as is the kitchen. Two bathrooms, three toilets. Heating worked well. The stairs are very steep!!! (Not suitable for kids or older people.) The second bedroom is ensuite but has no window, just one in the bathroom. (The third one which we did not use is just big enough for a bed and has also no window.) What we kind of felt uncomfortable with is the fact that there is no proper lock for the front door. The window in the downstairs toilet did not close properly.
- Donna (8/5): Would recommend and stay again if in the area - Space, cleanliness, decor. More blinds/curtains in en-suite bathroom and main bathroom.
- Sally (10/5): Relaxing and great to explore the area from. - I bought this for my mums 70th for her and my dad to go away. They had a fabulous time said they had everything they needed for a great stay. Only a 10min walk into Alnwick and they said the Italian was nice near by. They went to the theatre, cinema and The Gardens and The Castle. The third bedroom is tiny apparently but would be fine to just sleep in.
- Tracey (9/5): Great place to stay - Location was amazing Unable to put fire on as plug didnt reach socket
- Rachel (10/5): Exceptional -
- Stone (5/5): Passable - Location Stairs
- Olivia (10/5): Beautiful cottage, spacious for the family but so cosy! - We loved every bit of our stay. The house was immaculate and so spacious but so cosy.
Really central to Alnwick and to all the ‘tourist attractions’ which was great for our stay but also out of the way so we weren’t disturbed. Located a beautiful estate which is quiet and surrounded by lovely people!
Although this property is pet friendly, you wouldn’t notice at all - it’s perfectly suited to anyone!
We will definitely be back again! Thank you Sadie xx Not applicable. We loved every part!
