Guest Reviews
- Andrés (10/5): Volvería - El anfitrión es muy bueno, estuvo muy pendiente de lo que necesitamos, el lugar está limpio y bonito. No sentimos como en casa. Recomendado!!! Nada
- Zainab (1/5): Bad - The hostel cancelled on us when we were already on our way, and initially offered no apology or help in finding alternative accommodation considering this was peak season.
- Hoonji (4/5): Disappointing -
- Hetty (5/5): Fine for one night it you’re arriving during the day - Cool concept I arrived when it was dark at the dock and spent about 40 minutes trying to find the hostel - there are no signs and even Google maps doesn’t know where it is, didn’t feel safe walking around the middle of nowhere. Once I got there the bed wasn’t ready even though it was the evening and I couldn’t check in for 30 mins. Shower is more like a hose and the bathroom had no lock.
- Madeleine (3/5): Disastrous, disorganised, overpriced. - I appreciated the creativity and craftsmanship that had gone into making the building. It was very unique and impressive. I also liked the hammock next to our ‘room’. We stayed for 2 nights. The first issue was that we were asked to pay the equivalent of £45+ 6% tax when using the card machine. Booking had quoted the price as £40. The host then forgot to add the tax so made me pay it in cash. I wish I had challenged the extra charges as the hostel was outrageously overpriced.
The hostel has no locks on any doors (rooms, bathroom, no front door). So security and privacy are completely absent. This is fine in some situations, but the host herself was nervous at times - once when a random guy on a motorbike showed up she went running to check who it was before leaving the hostel and once saying she had to make sure she had left the money in a safe place before going out - clearly we don’t live in a utopia and bad people can still be around. Also the town of Capurgana operates on cash as there is no ATM so obviously all tourists have huge amounts of pesos or dollars with their possessions.
On the first night (a Thursday) there was a ‘jam session’ which just consisted of people from the hostel and their friends from outside drinking, smoking weed, and listening to loud music until 1am. After a long journey we just wanted to sleep. It’s not advertised as a party hostel and their values are meant to incorporate ‘respecting others’ (which is the reason they give for no locks).
After sunset the electricity would normally run from a generator. On the second night the generator broke down and the host wasn’t able to fix it. That night the roof of our room also leaked. So we were without power and also soggy. We had things to organise for the rest of our trip which we weren’t able to do without the Wi-Fi and power.
The ‘room’ we had was essentially a sort of glamping shack. No electric light (even when power worked), roof to low to stand,no walls, but there were bedbugs. There was no soap for washing hands in any of the bathrooms throughout the stay.
Wildly overpriced for £25 a night.
- Jess (10/5): Exceptional - Great place, great people!
- Mihaly (9/5): Beautiful time in the hostel made of recycled materials - Amazing place, made of only recycled materials Sometimes there was water or electricity
- Elisa (10/5): Exceptional - The best hostel I ever been! The owner is a super kind rastaman and he know how to make you feel at home. The hostel is all made with recycled materials. Absolutely nothing
- Stephanie (1/5): Bad -
- Nello (8/5): Very good -
- Elijah (10/5): Amazing chill and clean eco hostel - The owner was very helpful and always willing to help. Also, its not to far from the town center so you can walk to and from. Also, the outdoor/indoor showers were surprisingly refreshing and definitely a highlight of the hostel! Also, wifi is surprisingly good considering how remote the town is. You get attacked by mosquitos but I talked to people at other hostels who had similar experiences so it might just be a Capurgana thing more than a Reggae hostel thing. Also, the hostel is not well marked and can be hard to find the first time. I did text the owner and he promptly gave me directions and met me out front so that helped.
- Colin (6/5): Pleasant - The owner was very friendly and helpful, and has made an amazing effort to build this place from recycled materials. Unfortunately the mosquito net wasn't functional, and we got a lot of bites during the night.
- Tessa (10/5): amazing special place with friendly host - House is made out of wood and decorated by using rubbish, very eco way of building. Place looks very nice and the owner takes very good care of it and keeps it very clean. House is very basic, but has everything you need including kitchen and also laundry is possible. Owner is there lots of the time and always in for a dinner, chat and always willing to help. Its like sharing a house and it really felt like home.
- Andrea (9/5): Superb - The atmosphere at Casa Reggae was relaxed and positive. Rasta has build the house himself and it is a (habitable) piece of art. Rasta was very warm, kind and welcoming, and he keeps the place very clean and tidy. One day the resort next to the hostel played loud music in their pool area, but only experienced it one of the evenings.
- Jana-maria (10/5): Exceptional - Super friendly owner, I liked this place very much!
- Anna (10/5): Exceptional - Jair is the Creator of Casa Reggae and you can see how much thought and effort he put in there. Therefore he also keeps it very clean. He helped us out with everything we needed and we really felt at home there! We didn't mind, but just keep in mind, that you are living in a kind of open house, so you hear all the surrounding noises of nature but also the village.
