Guest Reviews
- Laura (9/5): - The family was super helpful with all my activity planning. Great location.
- Alice (9/5): Nice and quite place in the nature - Nice and quite place nearby the main reserves and other attractions. Nice room, the owners are really helpful and give nice and local tipps! Maybe for solo traveller with no car a little bit far from the city center Santa Elena. There is a small supermarket nearby with local products, which is though really expensive.
They could offer breakfast for the price, would make it little bit easier :)
- Alexandra (10/5): Helpful hosts and a quirky and comfortable property in a great location - This is a small casa on the edge of Santa Elena and it was in a brilliant location. We could easily walk to Curi Cancha reserve and the bus to the Monteverde cloud forest (700 colones single) departed from the main road at the end of the drive at 6.20am - important to catch the early bus if you don’t have pre booked tickets.
There are coffee shops and restaurants within a 5-10 min walk. There’s also a small organic food shop just up the road.
The owners were really friendly and helpful. They spent a lot of time with us on arrival answering questions and suggesting places to go in the area.
The bus station is a 30 minute walk / 5 min taxi ride away.
Large communal space downstairs with a basic kitchen and plentiful seating. There’s also a sunny terrace upstairs with outdoor seats provided. We missed hot water to wash up but there was a kettle provided.
- Sanfl (9/5): Great stay with kitchen in Monteverde - The owners are very nice, helpful and flexible. They live on the property, and you can communicate with them on whatsapp in writing. When asked, the owner gave me a carton of milk so I can make tea. I stayed in 2 different rooms (one had queen size bed and attached bathroom, one had twin size bed and separate bathroom, both rooms on upper level - the bathroom is at a lower level). Both rooms had a "slat" in the window so you can open it and have the fresh air in the room, if you wanted to. The place is clean. The kitchen has fridge, microwave, stove etc though the stove is quite dated. It is located next to Bat's Jungle. There is a great place to watch sunset, not far from the airbnb. Improvements: It will be good, if all rooms have couple of hangers. Though it is not the owner's fault, but if you are sharing the bathroom, the other people can make it messy. In my case, the couple who was using the bathroom (the man was not flushing the toilet, not sure why). The uber or the tour vans (For Selvatura, For Jeep-boat-Jeep transfer to La fortuna, For Night tour to Kinkajou) will not come till the entrance of the airbnb and you may have to carry your luggage till close to the road, which is not very far, but can be challenging if you have heavy luggage.
My first day, front door got locked when I got out in the morning. When I came back 30 minutes later, I had to eventually call the owner after trying to open for 20 minutes as one of the locks had gotten stuck - the owner is very handy and came and fixed it. Unfortunately, because of that I missed my bus which goes at some interval and so I had to wait an hour for the next bus.
- John (10/5): Exceptional -
- Anna (7/5): Good - The hosts were friendly, helpful, and responsive. The location is close to various tours and attractions, as well as grocery stores and gas station. Although, in terms of wildlife, the area isn't as diverse as Arenal and the Pacific Coast. The night walk tour will likely be a huge hit-and-miss. Overall, you'll likely see a few dark-coloured frogs (there are no colorful frogs in this part of CR), a few scorpions (seeing those light up with dark light was cool), and several sleepy birds disturbed by the flash lights. The house was old and designed weirdly, just not what I expected. The kitchen and pots need to be cleaned up and updated, and the kitchen drawers need to be cleaned out.
- Aljoscha (8/5): Very good - Very welcoming host, good tips for activities and local shops. Nice details in the house. Location is good for daytours to curi chancha and el tigre. A bit ouside the village. A bit challenging to find.
- James (10/5): Exceptional - Great hosts. Helped me find transportation and answered all my questions.
2 reserves within easy walking distance, private waterfall across the street.
- Paul (10/5): Exceptional -
- Bertram (9/5): The Casa Alquimia is an ocean of calm. - The property is very calm and peaceful. Your sleep will never be disturbed by noise. It is very clean. And it is close to certain sights in Monteverde many people want to see. It has hot showers, once you can figure out which knobs to pull where. Very nice hosts who will help you with your stay here and your transportation elsewhere. There is a very well-ordered common kitchen. It takes 20-25 minutes to walk to the main part of town. There is one bathroom for all the guests. I never found that to be a problem, but some people might.
- Colorado (10/5): Unique Costa Rica experience, love the house! - Fantastic house, large room, private parking, private bathroom, great common kitchen. Love the "treehouse" look, jungle view, beautiful sunset. The host greeted us at the parking space, THANK YOU!
- Ana (10/5): Exceptional - Cozy and very peaceful atmosphere. Ideal for resting and connection with nature
- Kamilla (9/5): Superb -
- Sarah (8/5): This home is a lovely place to stay in Monte Verde. Very well located where you can actually walk to the Curicancha rese - It was very peaceful and it was so nice to have a house to ourselves more or less The bathrooms downstairs need to be updated
- Shantanu (7/5): Good -
- Pontus (9/5): Superb - Beautiful and rustic, very helpful host. Only small thing was that I could not pay by card. But PayPal and cash was fine 🙂
- Yukon (10/5): Exceptional - It was lovely, had all the amenities. It was close to a wonderful restaurant(Stella's), the bat jungle. All within walking distance. It was about 25 minutes or more to get to downtown walking. Bus was easy to catch to the Cloud Forest. AND there was a wonderful waterfall right across the street. A bit of a hike down to it, but beautiful.
Also walked to the Children's Eternal Forest.
- Meliniotis (10/5): Exceptional - Amazing place , nice location just 10 min walk to beginning of town , the host was so nice Nothing
- Kristiana (10/5): If you appreciate a good aesthetic and design, this place is for you. I feel lucky to have found it. - We absolutely loved our stay in this beautiful hand-crafted guest house. There’s an airy kitchen with all the basics + more and a lovely dining and common area. Truly a gem. So much more than vocational rentals for this price offer in other places. Though, the room itself was small, the common area and the artistic feeling of the house compensated more than enough. We will definitely return in case we visit Monteverde area again. We also enjoyed the fact we were greeted by the hosts and not just given a lock box number. These days it’s becoming increasingly rare to meet the lovely hosts, who truly master hospitality. Thank you. I wish I could give more than 10 stars. Oh!! And we loved the Christmas Tree. :) We always left the house early in the morning and were a bit cautious about making sounds because the floors upstairs squeak a bit. I liked the sounds of wooden floors but my husband was weary of waking everyone up.
- Joy (10/5): A definite 10 ! - A beautiful place to stay. The hosts are artists and very knowleadgable about the area so their advice on things like where to go/bus times etc was really useful. As a solo female traveller this place was ideal and I felt very safe and comfortable here.
- Nir (9/5): Superb - Very nice place, the wood house very clean and feel like home. The owner very friendly. Bit far from Santa Elena. Can be reach by walk of 15-25 minutes (about 2 km).
- Christopher (8/5): Very good -
- Maria (7/5): Beautiful forest location and homey feeling! - The location is absolutely stunning. You wake up literally inside nature in the level that you might see wildlife in front of your window. The feeling is very homey and the hosts are the sweetest people, ready to help with whatever you need. If you don’t have the steadiest feet the entrance might be a bit tricky. It’s very steep, with no light at night and quite slippery in the rainy season (it’s not very long, stamina wise anyone could probably get up easily, you just need to be super careful to not slip). Inside the room, even though there are beautiful big windows, they can’t open. Meaning the air in the room can get quite heavy. And lastly, in the private room amenities there is a balcony mentioned, but the balcony is not connected to the rooms. It’s a shared terrace for all the rooms. Still beautiful though.
- Eva (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kaja (10/5): Exceptional - The hosts were super nice, recommended us incredible things to do around Monteverde and got us in contact with the best guide on this planet (Dulce).
- Toby (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kymm (6/5): Pleasant -
- Danielle (8/5): Cute little forest house in Monteverde - The location is up a long alley, but it's close to the parks and you can get around and do your forest visits easily from here. Also, the town isn't too far, and there's a lot to do/see/eat there. The location is very green and natural. We saw amazing tropical birds outside our door in the morning, including the motmot with his beautiful, long turquoise tail. There's a friendly dog who's happy to follow you around if no one else is paying attention to him. There's a little kitchen and fridge you can use, which is handy because there are no restaurants super close. The owner is nice and happy to share info, but it can take a little while to track him down. The room and is bathroom are small and basic, a bit like glamping. But honestly, it's fine, and I'd stay again.
- Lucinda (7/5): A bearable room in a charming guesthouse. - Hosts were very welcoming and helpful, the common spaces were nice. We saw colourful birds through the window if our room. The kitchen was very useful! The location is great. The room was so small the bed was flush against the wall. There was hardly any room to move. The room has a slightly unfinished effect, like the builders left after doing 90% of the build work.
- Violetta (8/5): Very good - Very good location for going to Monteverde
Free parking spaces
- David (9/5): Superb -
- Liz (10/5): The most beautiful house I’ve stayed in - Everything, the host were kind and welcoming. The house was clean and magical. I stayed in 1-bedroom and it had a huge window facing the trees. I fell asleep to the birds chirping and woke up to them with the sun peaking through. There’s a small window beneath that window that allows for a cool breeze in ( no mosquitoes or bugs got in btw).
There’s a balcony up to we’re you can watch the sunset
Cuti-cacha & the children’s eternal forest National parks are walking distance, there are even some waterfalls across the street , and the bus stop directly to monteverde cloud forest is across the street as well ( where the waterfall sign is)
I walked to Stella’s coffee shop, Kaffi coffee shop, & the coop which has traditional Costa Rican food & it supports the local women
- Chloe (10/5): Can't wait to go back - Great location, lovely host. Felt right at home. Beautiful bedroom. Shared areas were very cosy and warm.
- Chantale (6/5): Hum area / helpful owners, nice stop for a day - Super nice and helpful owners, and stylish arty property. Easy transport links by bus. We thought it was a bit expensive for what it was... the walls are made of wood and you can hear everything so we got awoken alot in the night. We also had a scorpion in the room that got in through the ground floor shutter. Also my bf suffers from the hum condition and it seems to be bad here in Monteverde as he hasnt experienced it anywhere else in Costa Rica so far.
- Rachel (10/5): Beautiful place close to national parks - Lovely place. Quiet with lots of wildlife in the garden. Highly recommend Nothing
- Annalena (10/5): Exceptional - This place was just magical! We’ve spent 2 nights there and I was really sad when we had to leave. From the moment we arrived, it just felt like home. Very beautiful and peaceful.
- Arndt (6/5): Pleasant -
- Nicholas (7/5): Good - Good location, very reasonable price. I had a very small room with shared bath. Nice shared kitchen. More like a hostel with a small private room. Nice host family lives nearby.
- Mia (8/5): Wonderful - Wonderful and helpful hosts who live on the property. Lovely garden and nature surrounding the house, bonus friendly kitten! The location was nice, easy short walk to a restaurant and excellent coffee shop. You can hear everything in the whole house from the room, luckily no one stayed up super late while we were there.
- Carlos (8/5): Very good -
- Dawn (8/5): Very good - The location was good and the owner very helpful There is no sound proofing so I could hear those walking on the floor above me, and every sound others staying made.
- Lynda (10/5): Exceptional -
- David (7/5): Good - The place was great. The place had a musty smell. The pillows were too thick and hard. Great place and wonderful people. Very hard to find.
- Tiffany (9/5): A great stay with wonderful host and nice location. - The host was amazing. He greeted us upon arrival and set up a guide for us the next morning at Curi-Cancha Reserve. We had a wonderful stay.
- Henning (10/5): Cute House. Nice furniture. Very helpful host :) -
- Erin (8/5): Very good -
- Broken-winged (9/5): Great place, would stay again if visiting Monteverde. - Gudy and his family are very very nice, helpful and welcoming. We locked ourselves out and they were able to help us immediately. The shower is hot and towels are provided. The guesthouse has a shared full kitchen and there are some very good restaurants near by too. The accommodation is well located for visiting the private and the public reserve. Our room would benefit from having the second bed removed to make space for maneuvering easily. The signs to the accommodation from the road need to be improved. Waze and Google got us there no problem, but we were a little confused as there is another Casa on this road with parking.
- Paul (9/5): Excellent value. - Extremely helpful staff arranged a skilled provate guide at rhe last minute. This vastly improved the value of my stay in Monteverde. The shared space was spacious with a full aized kitchen, which would be excellent for an extended stay.Individual rooms have there own locks. Poor sound proofing. The single bathroom may be an issue if more people are staying.
- Alan (8/5): Very good - The owner was really lovely and welcoming. The house is located near the Curi-Chancha and the Monteverde reserves and is perfect if you like hiking and nature walks. The owner recommended and organised a trip to the El Tigre waterfall reserve which was the real highlight of our visit. Our room with small private bathroom was very comfortable. The kitchen was very spacious but would benefit from some more pots and pans, cooking utensils and breakfast bowls, etc. We couldn't find a light over the large dining table.
- Lyubov (10/5): Exceptional -
- Cath (7/5): Good -
- Charlotte (10/5): Lovely house with very welcoming hosts that support you with any organisational problems. It was a pleasure to visit - The coziness and the bed was amazing Nothing
- Paula (10/5): it was great. i would recommend this place to everyone staying in Monteverde. - this was definitely one of the best accommodations i’ve ever been to. the hosts were okay with my late arrival and overall they were SO nice and helpful. They helped me plan my stay in Monteverde and what to do, because i didn’t have anything planned. The place is about 10 minutes to the closest market with food and the closest restaurant was about 5 minutes walking. There is also very close a cafeteria and a souvenir shop- everything a tourist needs. Anywhere else i ordered a pick up with tour. -
- Frans (10/5): Great stay in Monteverde - Nice rooms and common area with great sunset view. Excelent host who could tell us a lot about tge surroundings and activities. We definately enjoyed both the day and night walk in the Curi-Cancha reserve!
- Pola (10/5): Hidden gem worth checking out - The owners are the sweetest people ever and super helpful. WiFi works well if you're a digital nomad, warm water and the property is located in a quiet area which makes it easy to enjoy the nature and rest. There's some restaurants nearby, waterfall and a grocery store.
- Gwen (9/5): Superb - Such a beautiful space in the MonteVerde area outside of the hustle and bustle, but still close enough to walk to everything.
- Philip (9/5): Superb - The house looks a bit like it was put together by the owner himself, but it has a lot of charm.
I had a room with a private bathroom and a small kitchen, which I liked very much.
The host is very nice and explained many possible activities when I arrived. The house is a bit outside of Santa Elena towards the Monteverde Preserve, so a car is an advantage.
- Jasmin (8/5): Nice house with a cosy cabin vibe. - Beautiful sunsets from the terrace, big windows, surrounded by trees, very friendly and helpful owners. Rooms are not soundproof, no hot water in the shower, rooms were not really spacious.
- Winnie (8/5): Great spot in Monteverde - Great kitchen facilities.
Sun terrace was nice
Tarsicio & his wife were incredibly helpful, and always on hand to offer advice on trips/restaurants etc. in the area
Great location for many of the national parks
- Michiyo (10/5): Exceptional - The owner was really kind and helpful. He shared tips to enjoy Monteverde area which helped me a lot to plan during the stay. And also the room was clean and spacious enough to relax or work remotely as well.
- Xiaorong (9/5): For the price, this is an excellent choice. - The room has the view of trees. One can hear the birds in the morning. There is a shared kitchen and a shared living room downstairs. There are shops and restaurants nearby. The host is super friendly and helpful. A bus to the National Biological Cloud Forest Preserve (the main traction) passes the main road once every hour. The place is tucked on a side alley, a bit quiet and dim in the evenings. The location is a hike into town (30min). It's small. Bathroom and shower are downstairs. This may have nothing to do with this venue (it may be the same everywhere in Monteverde): At night, during the 2 days we stayed there, the wind was so strong and noisy, such that it's very hard to sleep.
- Flemming (4/5): Disappointing -
- Emily (10/5): Pura Vida! - We had such a lovely stay here - The room is perfectly set up with fridge, sink and stove, great shower and very quick wifi. Marianela and Tarsicio were so welcoming and accommodating, providing recommendations and support whenever needed. We really appreciated their hospitality :) The guest house is located close to lots of lovely restaurants and cafes and is easily accessible to the cloud forest (walking if you’re brave or via bus). Also very close to a beautiful spot for watching sunset. Would highly recommend this spot! Nada!
- Angela (10/5): Exceptional - Such friendly hosts, making my stay feel like home. Super grateful the hosts were flexible for an early check in for me, and were even willing to hold my bags a couple hours, as this helped me with my commute needs a ton!
- Kevin (4/5): Disappointing -
- Kathleen (6/5): Convenient but quirky. - Location was excellent and the hosts were very sweet. They helped us find a terrific tour at an organic coffee farm. they called and made all the arrangements. There was a nice communal kitchen. The bed was horrible - hard as a rock. The walls were very thin, so you could hear everything going on in the house.
- Aseem (9/5): Magical Monteverdi Casa !! - what a wonderful place to stay …. calm and beautiful… with the most charming host… the communal areas are so welcoming and comfortable that it draws the guests together to mingle…. but the rooms and terrace allows the privacy of you want it …. kitchen facility is very good , clean and spacious…. host is very responsive and helpful….. fantastic value too !!
- Donna (8/5): Very good - Common area good for socializing. Monkeys, birds right on property. Shared kitchen was adequate and clean. Really close to Eternal Children Forest Walk, bus to Monteverde Cloud Forest, restaurants and small grocery No outdoor seating area
- Alicia (7/5): Cute and quiet. - It was a very lovely guest house with a gorgeous garden. The staff were very kind also. A nice thing was that there was a waterfall nearby and more nice views outside. It was uphill, and while it allowed for gorgeous views, walking around from one place to another was a bit tricky as a lot of places were further away. This was especially harder to do when it was so windy and rainy in the evenings particular. But overall it was still a lovely place.
- Ronja (9/5): The owner is sooooo great and helpful! Really charming. - Easy to get around by public transport and taxis too. Nice things within walking distance. The walls are really thin so all the sounds from the room above come through. With considerable neighbours that is no problem. With small kids in the neighbour room our night was a bit short 😜.
- Anonymous (8/5): very enjoyable - good location, very clean nothing
- Emily (10/5): Exceptional - Really lovely place - felt like home. A little out of town so lovely and quiet but useful to have a car to get to. Lovely shared kitchen, dining room and living area. Lovely warm covers on the beds and very friendly couple running the place. Noting everything was great.
- Catalina (10/5): beautiful cozy wooden stay - the hosts were amazing, location is exceptional and the house so charming I liked everything
- Aurora (10/5): Exceptional - I felt instantly very welcomed and at home, super friendly and helpful host, felt like family!
- Charles (8/5): Very good -
- Jen (10/5): Exceptional -
- Alexandra (9/5): Beautiful house, lovely rooms and details and a dream kitchen within nature - Incredibly beautiful house within nature run by a lovely family. Perfect for everyone who wants to escape noisy touristy hostels. Recommendable for friends or family travelling together. If you’re travelling alone and looking for companionship this might not be the best opportunity.
- York (10/5): Exceptional -
- Mark (10/5): Exceptional -
- Nadia (10/5): Exceptional - lots of green. very friendly owners. everything was great
- Jonas (10/5): Exceptional - Perfect place. Cozy cabin, nice and helpful host. There's a deck to see the sunset. Nice kitchen, good beds. Overall awesome. Walking distance to several parks and activities Nothing bad to say
- Madison (10/5): beautiful escape - very beautiful space and perfectly located if you enjoy walking or are feeling active. beautiful views from property and right next to an amazing view point. hosts were extremely helpful! would definitely recommend you can hear everything so need to be cautious of noise made in room
- Sandro (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ceecee (8/5): Enjoyable stay with great location bonus. - The location was perfect. I could walk to town and 40 minute walk to Cloud Forest Reserve (or take a bus/taxi). 100m from Casa Alquimia are restaurants, grocery store, coffee shops, co-op and a 100m further is El Tigre Reserve. Don't miss the Bat Jungle tour - the guide is a bat expert and fascinating. Tarsicio speaks English and offered local information and assistance with taxi numbers, etc. Room was roomy and clean and bed was comfortable. Bathroom for the 2nd floor rooms was on the first floor and a little challenging finding things in the kitchen. A hook or two would be helpful in the room to hang a wet jacket on.
- Richard (10/5): Exceptional -
- Katharine (6/5): Don’t expect too much but enjoy the view from your bedroom window- especially with no curtains! - nice location away from road - Owners nice a personable Bathroom not cleaned throughout my stay -5days-toilet waist bin including!
Kitchen has all facilities but no usual salt/ coffee etc- you have to buy everything- no matter how long or short your stay
I think the owners are too busy building their new house and have taken their eye off the ball
- Jere (9/5): Superb -
