- Marta Belsh (5/5): We enjoyed the beach, but felt the hotel was overpriced - We were disappointed with the breakfast, both in terms of quality and quantity. The selection felt limited, and the food did not meet our expectations, which took away from an otherwise positive experience. The portions were quite small, and the food itself did not meet expectations—eggs were overcooked, the toast was dry and hard, and the omelette was very small and overdone. Unfortunately, this took away from an otherwise positive experience.
- Brian (8/5): Good overall, minus breakfast. Cocktails were way over priced - Quiet location but not far from Samara. Food was not that great. Breakfast was small portions and limited choices. Cook needs some training on cooking eggs for breakfast.
- Gary (10/5): Very relaxing holiday - Friendly staff always happy to help and very clean hotel in lovely surroundings Nothing
- Alexandra (9/5): - Carillo beach within 4 min. drive Pool closed to early in the evening. seemed understaffed at the moment. Long wait for breakfast
- Jean (8/5): Nice location. Pool area was clean and peaceful.Restaurant on site. Breakfast included. - Location, pool, private deck. (A little road noise though not bothersome). Morning monkeys and birds were charming. Glad to not have a pool side room as there is little privacy. Staff was curt and job oriented vs people oriented. First hotel I’ve ever stayed in that charges for in-room coffee. (Cmon, it’s Costa Rica…)
- Joachim (8/5): Enjoyable place to stay for a few days - Whole facility is very attractive and the staff was very helpful. Restaurant service was excellent. Bathroom was a bit small but very functional. Could have used a box of facial tissue and a free bottle of water per day. Prices at the restaurant were a bit high compared to free standing restaurants in the area but certainly not out of line
- Liudmyla (10/5): -
- Gerardo (8/5): Relajante - Ubicación e instalaciones La habitación tenía mal olor
- Castro Cordero (6/5): - L habitación espaciosa Todo muy sucio
- Gabriel (7/5): Good - Bed No hot water
- Scott (8/5): Very good -
- Carl (9/5): Superb -
- Christian (10/5): Exceptional -
- Andrei (10/5): Exceptional - -everything was ok;
-the staff was attentive and supportive;
-quite good breakfast; -the location is near the main road so can be noisy from 6 am till 9–10 am.
-i requested a quiet room but they gave us a room right near the street;
- James (10/5): Will return to Samara someday and stay there again! - Location- between Playa Carrillo and Samara beaches. Away (but not too far) from town so it was quiet and peaceful. Beautiful rooms and common areas. Pool was perfect! Excellent breakfast in the open air restaurant.
Don’t miss the Saturday market in Samara!
Best part- meeting and talking with Loyda at the front desk. She was friendly, helpful, professional at her job, and very easy to chat with! To learn more about a local’s life there really enriched our trip to Costa Rica! Not one thing.
- Kim (8/5): Very good -
- Lee (9/5): Superb -
- Delvin (6/5): Staff members are wonderful. Lacking maintenance and cleaning. - Fabulous staff, location was very convenient Lacking in grounds maintenance, garbage around property. Room was not cleaned properly. Coming from managing larger hotels maybe I’m too picky. Hair around sink and base of toilet. Hair in the shower, dirty floor.
- Silky (5/5): Our overall experience was not good at this place and we not be returning again . - Property was close to beach and the pool was nice . Although breakfast was included, it was not worth it . They were not able to make eggs as requested multiple times. We asked for over easy and they kept making over done . Coffee was diluted and milk was not good almost like watered down. They were serving fruits in little cups and were not enough like one piece of watermelon, pineapple etc . Pancakes served had no taste . Also the shower didn’t have enough water pressure and hair dryer didn’t work . We had to request multiple times for clean towels , they kept saying just hang up your towels and it will dry . They have understand Costa Rica has rainy and humid weather , so towels don’t just dry easily. For the money you are paying per night, this place is definitely not worth it.
- Michael (9/5): Great quality hotel in good location - Good quality hotel in quiet location and walking distance from quiet beaches. Staff were very friendly. Really liked the property but would expect a more extensive breakfast in a hotel of this quality. The fruit juice wasn’t fresh and there could have been additional buffet fruit selection
- Razia (10/5): A Slice of heaven on Play Samara! - The service was top notch is every aspect. Stuffs were welcoming and always always eager to help! Nalla was kind enough to offer us juices everyday we were at the pool. The stay was so much peaceful and relaxing mostly owing to the stuff.
We wanted a beachfront hotel. However felt glad we chose this as it was close to both the beaches: samara and Carrillo.
Will come back again!
- Jimmy (9/5): Superb - Sisi the Cook was soooo Nice.
- Joanna (7/5): Good - It was friendly, rooms were huge and evening meals were really good. It served us well as a base and I appreciated being out of town and the calmer setting. They also helped us make some bookings, and were willing to make changes to the set breakfast menu as my kids would not eat the whole thing and it was a waste otherwise. Howler monkeys and pop up iguanas were a bonus. Staff were super friendly though at times it felt there was more chatting than clearing tables etc, though again a couple of notable staff were working double time and really hard. We had a car thankfully as I would not have wanted to walk along the main road every day with 2 under 10s to get to the beach. I had to ask every day for coffee for my room, and the cups, glasses etc were never cleaned or changed in our 6 night stay. Our sheets were only changed the last night of our stay though I'm sure they would have been changed sooner if I'd asked or needed. I was underwhelmed rather than didn't like the place I think as our other stays in CR had exceeded my expectations and this was not as on the beach or with great views as I'd expected, however being so close to Playa Carillo was really great. We only spent a very small amount of time in Samara.
- Thomas (6/5): Probably not 'Boutique' but a pleasant place to stay and good for the price. - A pleasant location around 10 minutes drive from the centre of Samara. An easy walk to the nearby beaches and a nice swimming pool which was clean and never busy. Staff were very friendly and accommodating. Drinks and food on-site were very expensive. Breakfast had a set menu of three items with additional cost if you wished for more variety. Due to location not much else around in-terms of other places to eat without driving.
- Alexandra (5/5): Okay stay - The staff were incredibly lovely and friendly, and the bed was really comfortable. It’s really close to beach access to both Carrillo + Sámara, on quieter parts of the beaches - a 5 minute walk to each.We also enjoyed that there was quite a lot of monkeys around it. Spending 10 days traveling, we booked this as ‘our treat’ where we wanted to be able to relax at the hotel and not drive everywhere or need to cook for ourselves. Unfortunately, only when we checked in where we told the kitchen was closed for our stay, which meant a limited breakfast, no lunch or dinner and no bar (we did manage to get a couple of beers.) This left us in limbo - no way to get food there, but also no amenities to make it ourselves as the fridge wasn’t very cold and very small. The staff were apologetic about it, but we should have been told in advance and given the opportunity to cancel our booking. The hotel is not close to Sámara town, so we had to drive everywhere for meals or walk the 30-35 minutes down the beach (fine on the way, but pitch black at night!) This would be fine except it was the only 3 days we wanted to avoid that. The hotel felt quite old fashioned and in need of some love.
- David (7/5): Great pool and room for family of 5 was ideal! Need to keep ants and wasps under better control. - The kids loved the pool and the room we had for 5 people was ideal. The 3 kids were able to sleep in the upstairs loft and we slept downstairs. Breakfast - not a real Tico experience. The fresh squeezed juice you get everywhere else was just a sugary Orange Tang. They did not have any syrup for the kids pancakes, but did get them chocolate syrup to put on them. You'll see some reviews about ants in some posts. It's true if the unit you are in (most of which have a kitchenette's I believe) had previous people staying who ate throughout the room or left small crumbs of food you'll have ants. This was our experience the first night. Just went around killing them. They stayed on the floor so not too big of a deal. The next day I let them know and I think they must have done a better job on cleaning and we did not have any issues. Its a little further from the beach area than I was expecting, but an okay value.
- Silvia (9/5): Superb -
- Susan (9/5): Friendly, helpful staff. Very close to two beautiful beaches. -
- Lorraine (10/5): It’s a small resort but a lot of bang for your buck. - The hotel restaurant was fantastic and the atmosphere felt like a very calm retreat. The staff went above and beyond and made us feel like family. The beach is only a 5 minute walk from the hotel and the trail had beautiful trees and monkeys along the way. The loft was roomy, very clean, and the beds were extremely comfortable. It’s a fantastic hidden gem. No complaints! We loved everything about Hotel Montelaguna and will definitely come back.
- Kara (9/5): Sweet staff, beautiful rooms and good food - Room was great and the staff was wonderful. Breakfast was great too I would have liked to be closer to the city
- Mike (7/5): Good -
- David (5/5): Passable - The property has a nice swimming pool. The room had no hot water and the restaurant offer was quite basic.
- Katherine (6/5): Pleasant - We loved the shared spaces, especially the pool. We also liked being near both playa Carillo and Playa Samara. Staff were very nice and helpful. Walking to the beach was doable, but you have to cross and busy street, which I didn’t realize when we booked. Also I thought the rooms were not as nice in person as they looked in the picture. The restaurant was pricey and even though breakfast was included, there were only a few choices. My kids only wanted the pancakes, but they were very small and my kids were always still hungry, so we ended up going into town for bfast most of the time.
- Alex (9/5): Superb -
- Heidi (10/5): Exceptional -
- Susan (8/5): Pleasant but a bit remote without a car and overpriced - Breakfast was good Near two excellent beaches All a bit faded. Not much choice in restaurant and a long way to others/shops
- Loriana (10/5): Exceptional -
- Carlos (8/5): OK for the money paid - Clean, friendly they could improve the breakfast service quite a bit, not the food but the experience, i.e. more staff, coffee and juices served to your table etc
- Blackwell (7/5): The staff were very helpful and friendly. - The pool was very nice and had lots of beautiful plants around it. It’s a very noisy location beside a busy road.
The restaurant had limited offerings and not much fresh vegetables. It’s far from the town and activities.
- Rhonda (8/5): Would never stay here again. - Close to the beach. Noisy traffic behind the guest rooms.
Cockroaches in bathroom, lamp shades broken, remote for air conditioner didn’t work even after we put “our” batteries in it.
Kitchen and wait staff are “not” friendly.
Breakfast was ok, dried out piece of bread, eggs ok. Asked for splenda for coffee never did get it.
- David (10/5): Costa Rica vacation - We were made welcome upon arrival and the reception staff and management were always available for advice and bookings. Friendly and attentive restaurant staff. Room was cleaned daily and the bed was very comfortable. Location was excellent, private balcony to observe and hear wildlife. Walking distance to 2 beaches and a 5 minute drive into town. The lovely pool area provided a relaxing environment after time at the beach. Good breakfast each day and the chef cooked a delicious dinner for us using a couple of tuna we caught on a fishing trip. The cleaning staff were friendly and very efficient. We had a great stay and would like to return. Nothing
- Carla (8/5): Very good -
- Helena (10/5): Every thing was pretty - Location and amenities Nothings
- Keith (7/5): Good -
- Heather (10/5): Excellent in all respects - Excellent hotel, friendly and professional staff, great facilities, excellent food, thank you to all the staff for a great stay. Nothing to add here.
- Nichola (1/5): Steer well clear! - Good location for exploring Samara. Apart from my daughter (who was the only one in our party who didnt have eggs for breakfast at the hotel), we all contracted food poisoning after eating in the restaurant. We know it was this restaurant as we are so careful with hygiene, only drank bottled water and hadn't eaten out anywhere else as we were previously self catering before going to the Montelaguna. The hotel owner did not care, just kept telling us we can't prove it was them. We were terribly ill for the last 4 days of our holiday. He told us they have 40 guests and we were the only ones who complained, however, we know another family who were ill at the same time and the restaurant was always ghostly quiet - we know as we spent our time there gazing out of the window overlooking the restaurant in between clutching our stomachs, vomiting and running to the loo with the most horrendous diarrhea weve ever had. 😢
That aside, if you need any other reason to avoid the Montelaguna, the hotel needs a lot of updating and repairs to be carried out. Curtain pole hanging off in one room, cockroach in the shower, shower not able to point in right direction so either sprays the wall or into the bathroom. Outdoor shower by the pool was green with slime and in a bad state of disrepair.
The hotel owner will probably respond blaming us for our own illness but we just wanted to make sure future holiday makers know the truth. Avoid like the plague.
- Manuel (9/5): Superb -
- Jeanne (7/5): Good - Shared areas are pretty, rooms are ok Rooms and service are a bit basic for the price
- Francisco (10/5): Beautiful location, very nice rooms and pool, amazing staff would definitely come back . - Breakfast and staff Booking.com chat was hacked and try to phish me with messages about resending my credit card information .
- Patricia (10/5): Exceptional -
- Pilar (7/5): The facilities are beautiful, and the staff is super friendly. - The facilities and gardens are all beautiful, and the staff went above and beyond to make sure that we were comfortable and all our needs were met. Coffee should be available in rooms even if guests are staying only for one night, that is basic everywhere. Also, there should be a microwave in every room. I have stayed at more affordable hotels and there is always a microwave. The food at the restaurant is not tasty, I would not consider having dinner there.
- Karen (9/5): Superb -
- Daniela (8/5): Very good -
- Marta (10/5): to rest with comfort and privacy - privacy comfort and clean
- Guiselle (8/5): Very good -
- Martina (9/5): Superb - Big rooms, very nice pool area, super friendly and helpful staff. The beautiful Carillo Beach is only a 10mins walk away If you stay a few days, it is good to have a car.
- Diane (10/5): We enjoyed our 6 night stay and would recommend it; hotel is small (17 rooms) and intimate. - The staff was wonderful, especially Xinia who consistently went over and above and always addressed our needs and wants. The owner Don Mario was super friendly and attentive. The housekeeping staff was very flexible when we wanted to hang in our room in the mornings. The food was very good and had a good variety and always fresh fish, veggies and fruit and reasonably priced. The free breakfast was plentiful and delicious.
- Valerie (9/5): beautiful hotel, great service - clean, spacious rooms. comfortable beds. staff were amazing as was the breakfast buffet. beautiful landscape the sign for the hotel was small, hard to read when we arrived at dusk
- Daniel (8/5): Samara trip - The people working were fantastic. Breakfast was healthy and fresh each morning. Great pool and a hotel away from the hustle and bustle of Samara. Wifi was spotty and didnt work for me the entire time. No stove for cooking in room even though it had a Kitchen. No stove or microwave.
- Ryan (8/5): Pleasant - it was a very charming little boutique hotel. The rooms were comfortable and clean. The staff very friendly and helpful. The hotel is located just off the main road between two towns. It’s about a 10 minute walk to the nearest beach and about a 10 minute drive to the nearest town.
- Aysegul (10/5): great location, great staff, clean hotel - good location, clean, great food, great staff nothing
- Lívia (8/5): Very good - The beach is only 10 minutes walk, but there isn't any bar or restaurant. Very natural, beautifull, quiet beach. If you wanna go to the town you need a car or taxi.
- Theresa (10/5): Exceptional -
- Dalia (7/5): Good value for this season. - Good value for the price, very nice people! Breakfast, noise from the Cleanning team, air condition, coffee in the room.
- Alex (9/5): enjoyed our stay - breakfast was great. Nice pool. nice dining room
- Nestor (8/5): Very good -
- Barry (8/5): Very good -
- Edward (7/5): Good - Pool and common area were very attractive and comfortable. Room was functional and clean. Checkin was friendly and efficient. The iguana who lived in our patio drain was very intertaining. Bathroom in unit was tiny and not well lit. There was no way to shower without flooding the bathroom floor. After a half-hearted attempt to fix the non-funtioning a/c controller, no further action was taken. On second day of our two day stay, breakfast buffet featured cold coffee.
- Anonymous (10/5): Exceptional -
- James (10/5): Exceptional -
- Matthew (10/5): Exceptional -
- Faith (8/5): Very good -
- Hosting (5/5): Basically okay -why did we get the worst room? - We chose the hotel because of its central location between the two beaches and intentionally a bit out of the way. Nice personel. The location was nearly unfrequented and we got the worst room. We could move to a better room. Rooms need to be refreshed.
- Caterine (7/5): There room selection was misrepresented - A serious thing - they advertise a Family Suite. Two bedrooms. I specifically and importantly needed two bedrooms as I was travelling with a colleague I wasn't too familiar with. When we arrived, the family suite consisted of opening the door into a bedroom, that then went into another bedroom that then went into bathroom. So the person in the first bedroom needed to climb over the second person to go to the bathroom to get to the washroom - and there was no "suite" portion to "sit". Why does Green Acres come to mind. I am not sure if this is the hotels fault or Booking.com's but it was not good. We managed to get two single rooms at $500+ more but would have been stuck if these weren't available. The person at the front said "See, it says Family room, 2 bedrooms, and you booked it...". Ya' right. That was kinda' lousy. Once settled, the place was ok and grew on me but if you'd never been to CR before, the long walks to the beach would be daunting w/o a car.
- Roger (10/5): Exceptional - I liked the overall experience at this property. The staff very helpful. The room was comfortable. We had 3 people in the room and it was spacious enough. Great breakfast as well.
- Ashley (10/5): Exceptional -
- Timothy (9/5): Superb -
- Emelie (8/5): close to Carrillo beach - We enjoyed the closeness to both beaches and the hospitality from Julio at the front desk. When we got our room it was cleaned, however, a plate of old food had been forgotten in it. We were told restaurants would be nearby, this is not the case. You need to drive to central Samara in order to eat at any restaurant apart from the only at the hotel.
- Hosting (6/5): Pleasant - The location near the nicer Carrillo Beach and the grounds of the hotel. Very friendly staff. Quiet (not applicable to all rooms). The pool. The rooms are very different. First we got probably the worst of all rooms (15), right next to the street, no balcony, bad Wifi.
The other room (6) was better by classes, had a balcony and seemed nicer and bigger. We didn't understand the room allocation - the hotel was never fully occupied.
- Katherine (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ottavio (6/5): Pleasant - The location was perfect The breackfast poor. The building was old
- Uwe (8/5): Very good - Staff was friendly and helpful The rooms are ok but a little old styled
- Natalie (4/5): Very disappointing. Not worth the money. - Nice pool. Good location for quieter beaches. Good breakfast. Friendly staff. Loft suite was very disappointing. Kitchen is not set up for self catering (no stovetop as advertised) so self catering not possible. Kitchen units and cupboards broken. Bedroom lights went on and off randomly. Bathroom tiny and dark with no window - not what you’d expect when paying for the biggest room/suite at the hotel. Restaurant overpriced and no atmosphere. Food took ages with only 8 people eating.
