Guest Reviews
- Karine (10/5): Parfait - Le personnel, la situation géographique et l exceptionnel petit déjeuner Rien
- Steven (10/5): We had a lovely two nights at the Shoregate and look forward to returning soon. - Breakfast was outstanding. Lots of choice and perfectly cooked and presented.
Our room was lovely and spotlessly clean. All staff were very friendly and professional.
Had an evening meal in the restaurant which was excellent and enjoyed a drink in the cozy pub. Couldn’t fault anything about our stay.
- christine (10/5): - Cozy, quiet, nice appointments, breakfast fantastic

- John (9/5): Fabulous hotel and staff made our wedding anniversary extra special! - Excellent breakfast. Freshly cooked to order. No problems
- Jean (10/5): Great choice for a short stay - The hotel retains old world charm with quirky modern touches. The rooms are stunning, comfortable and luxurious. Little extras such as hand made macarons and a local gin were very welcome. Food was fabulous, as was service. The location is perfect for exploring the beautiful village of Crail and a short walk to the picturesque harbour. There is a bus stop right outside the hotel if you want to go to St Andrews without the car. A great choice for a short break and will definitely be back. Nothing.
- Lisa (10/5): Perfect! - We had the most amazing time! Room was perfect, staff very kind and the breakfast so delicious. We also had dinner at the restaurant in the evening, highly recommended. Our stay was 10/10!

- terri (10/5): It was surprisingly swanky for such a small town. - Beautiful property. We had a very nice, large, comfortable room with snacks waiting for us. The large bathroom has a great shower, robes and slippers. Friendly helpful staff. Delicious, top notch, beautifully prepared meals. We were walking the fife trail so Shoregate was a huge treat after walking 11 miles.
- wendy (10/5): - We loved everything about the Shoregate Our Rooms were very comfortable, and had a wow factor when we opened the door, lovely little touches like a macaron and tablet and a gin and tonic. The staff were lovely especially the guy who greeted us when we arrived. (Sorry his name escapes me) Our Breakfast was excellent and all home made, delicious!!!!
Will definitely be back Nothing

- Joanne (10/5): - The staff were very helpful - including putting some fruit and yogurt in my refrigerator the evening before I was leaving since I had an early pick-up time.
- Wendy (9/5): Would be very happy to return. Lovely intimate and friendly place. - Great food, comfortable room, immaculate and very friendly. Why does a room that hosts 2 people only have 1 chair?
- Christine (10/5): Luxury in Crail - The room was very comfortable and very well appointed.
We had dinner the night of our stay and it was excellent.
- Alexander (10/5): - Everything, Dinner was fantastic, Breakfast the best ever, Hospitality on a different level That i could not stay longer
- Janine (9/5): Excellent hotel with wonderful facilities.wpuld have loved to experience the restaurant for an evening meal but it was c - The decor, the facilities, the in room treats. The restaurant being closed for the duration of our stay.
- Eithne (9/5): Fab! - Rooms, staff, food No staff on site overnight. Given several numbers to call in an emergency overnight. Can see there is no space for staff to stay overnight but there should be a designated person on call via a single telephone number. There is no time to try different telephone numbers in an emergency.
- Porawan (10/5): - Excellent place!!! Nothing
- louisa (10/5): Best food on the Fife coastal path - Super place. Every detail thought through with love.

- Natalie (10/5): We had such a lovely stay! The room was spacious, spotless, and beautifully decorated—and the welcome macarons were such - Everything! The rooms were great, the breakfast was delicious and the staff was so helpful! There was nothing we didn’t like!! Loved it!
- Denise (10/5): Wonderful hotel and service - Staff are helpful and responsive to any questions tnat you have before and during your stay.
We stayed in room 1 - decorated and finished to an extremely high standard and, thanks to the wondefful housekeeper, Jean, immaculate. The interiors are stylish and of superb quality. Our room was well stocked with coffee pods, fresh milk, water, and two gins as well as some local tablet! A lovely touch. Lux bathroom.
Breakfast was divine, and service wonderful. They accommodated unusual dietary requests (how much does a slice of your sourdough weigh!) without batting an eye.
Well situated on the main road, which despite being the main street is quiet. Some parking is available to the rear. Quick drive to other coastal towns.
The bar had a live music event on - and soundproofing in the rooms is excellent so even if you don't fancy it, you won't be bothered
The beach is just a two minute walk away.
Can't rate the hotel highly enough.
I will definitely be back All fab, really.
- Pamela (10/5): The best accommodation in this tiny village. Will definitely be back. - Everything about this hotel is fabulous. David went above and beyond to make everything perfect. From home macaroons to the Gin and tonics in our room on our arrival. Even a bucket of ice. The dinner (please book early) outstanding and the breakfasts were WOW. Nothing .
- Shannon (10/5): Exceptional -
- Alisa (10/5): Exceptional -
- Fiona (10/5): The attention to detail was impressive, from our room to the restaurant - There were so many things that we were impressed with. Upon arrival the room had fresh milk in the fridge (not UHT pots) and macaroons to go with tea/coffee. There were complimentary gin and tonics left together with an ice bucket full of ice. You could get lost in the huge fluffy bath towels. The breakfast was incredible, both delicious and generous (and so was our dinner). The staff were attentive and helpful. We had a very relaxing and enjoyable stay and will definitely return.
- Joseph (10/5): Exceptional -

- Kenneth (10/5): Total Bliss from arrival to departure. Truly a wonderful gem with an equally amazing committed team who make your visit - Do not know where to start…The Shoregate is simply above and beyond from the welcome to the goodbye. The food is just incredible, think Michelin star, the service amazing, cleanliness, atmosphere, helpfulness, friendliness, peaceful. To be honest it is as perfect as one could aim for. We will certainly be back, if we can get in, as we are sure the word is out!!! Can honestly say NOTHING! There was simply nothing we did not like and we stayed two nights, maybe that is what we did not like…we should have stayed more!!!!
- Linda (9/5): A wonderful and friendly experience we wish could have been longer. - Loved our stay. The welcome G&T and Maroons were a nice touch. Dinner and breakfast were both wonderful. Wish we could have stayed longer than one night. A real gem! Clearer parking instructions. It would have been nice to have a small seat or stool to put toiletries or clothes on in the bathroom and a way to keep the window open at night. It was warm while we visited and the room got stuffy at night.
- Phillip (10/5): Everything was perfect! - We had a wonderful stay at The Shoregate. Breakfast was included with our room charge and it was delicious. We also had dinner one evening and highly recommend it. Nothing
- Antoinet (9/5): Pearl in cosy special location - Friendly considerate staff , good food : even better than we thought. Great breakfast with different choices. Helpful staff. All great!
- Belinda (8/5): Short break - Attention to detail in the room was excellent. Very comfortable & they thought of everything we could need.
Breakfast was out of this world, best ever but far too much to finish.
- Anthony (10/5): We will be back - High quality, extremely clean and attention to detail was outstanding. Everything was great
- Gillian (10/5): Excellent stay - The rooms were amazing . Every need met
The restaurant was excellent and the staff so helpful
- John (9/5): Superb -
- Giovanna (10/5): Wonderful independent hotel in Fife - The Shoregate is a wonderful independent hotel in Crail. It is run by a team that is committed to very high standards and has everything that is needed to provide guests with a relaxing stay. The team assisted me with tips ahead of my trip, and I also reserved dinner at the restaurant which was delicious. I hate decorative pillows because rarely do they get washed in between guest stays, although they work amazing from the aesthetic POV, and there were plenty on my bed. Just a small thing I am not a fan of.
- Liz (10/5): Exceptional stay - The staff were very welcoming and helpful. Our room was extremely comfortable and the shower exceptional. A very nice touch were all the complimentary goodies. The food was excellent though some of the portions a bit large for us but then we don't have enormous appetites. It was very quiet despite being in the middle of the village. A short stroll down to the harbour and round the castle walk is very pleasant especially as we had fabulous weather while there. Would highly recommend. The only thing that might have made it better would have been more fish on the menu.
- Susan (10/5): Excellent stay - Room was very well presented and comfortable. Staff were very helpful. Dinner and breakfast were excellent. Very nice fresh fruit plate for breakfast. Nothing
- Ian (9/5): Superb - Very comfortable stay in the heart of Crail.
- Bill (10/5): Superb - Everything Nothing
- Elizabeth (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jean (10/5): Enjoyed our stay very much and hope to repeat . Could not have been better. - This was an online booking by chance and what a lucky find it was. Beautiful room with excellent facilities and caring staff. Food is exceptional.
- Leigh (8/5): Very good -
- Gordon (10/5): Exceptional -
- Hannah (10/5): Exceptional -
- Scott (10/5): Excellent. Relaxing two days in a fab hotel. - Lovely room, comfortable bed. Food excellent .Staffs desire to please. Nothing was a problem . Would definitely return. Gem of a place. Trip advisor advised. Only issue which was annoying was we heard a door on our floor banging when someone had been leaving the room or place on our floor. Needs to be closed quietly and considerately.
- Strachan (10/5): Wonderful stay in a beautiful hotel with fantastic food and amazing staff. - It is a beautifully appointed boutique hotel with no minor detail overlooked. The room was beautiful, the food was absolutely exceptional and the staff were fantastic. I cannot recommend this place enough. Nothing. It is superb.
- Heather (10/5): 100% will stay here again and recommend to anyone wanting to stay in Crail. Breakfast was top notch and staff helpful an - Beautifully decorated, clean and modern. Perfect location for staying in Crail. Nothing.
- Elizabeth (9/5): Superb - Delicious
- Anderson (10/5): Worth the wait - Everything was as expected and better
We had been aware of the renovations being done and the time it took to get the project completed but the end result was worth the wait To be honest there was nothing major that could be improved on but the tables were a little small at breakfast time
Some people may find not having a member of staff on the premises daunting but it did not affect us at all Emergency procedures were in place
- Sam (10/5): Beautiful, comfortable boutique hotel. Loved it - Beautiful boutique hotel. We were in room 2 with a sea view. Lots of lovely little touches, complimentary gin and tonic and madeleines. Bed was super comfy. Bath robes a nice touch. Food was fantastic and breakfast was high quality with plenty of choice. Would highly recommend The hotel is on the main road in Crail, which is not very busy. The only thing we noticed was the top deck of the bus when it stopped outside was level with the bedroom window. However the bus is not that frequent
- Kat (9/5): Really good quality that is deserving of the cost to stay there. Every staff member we met was professional and delivere - Every aspect of our stay was high quality - the food, the bedroom, the staff.
We particularly liked the thought that had gone into into the design of the bathroom.
Breakfast was amazing The kitchen fan was outside our room and was a little annoying when we came back to the room late afternoon.
- Shaunak (10/5): Exceptional -
- Martin (9/5): Superb -
- Garry (10/5): Exceptional -
- Fenby (10/5): Perfect - Probably the best boutique hotel we’ve stayed in. Staff were really gentle & observant. Very comfortable.
- Smith (10/5): Exceptional - The room was clean and comfortable. The food was excellent at breakfast and dinner. Nothing.
- Peter (10/5): An absolute diamond of a hotel and restaurant - Rooms were extremely spacious and comfortable, food was phenomenal and staff were incredibly friendly and helpful Nothing really. Was class
- Azelia (10/5): A gem of a stay offering luxury with great service in a beautiful location! - Our favourite stay in Scotland!
The rooms were not just beautifully appointed but also very thoughtfully. Service was attentive and warm but discreet. Great location to explore the area including a short drive to St. Andrews. From welcome drinks & treats in the stunning room with lovely views plus excellent lighting (a rarity in any hotel) to the extravagant breakfasts; a lot of effort had gone into making this an exceptional stay for their guests.
The breakfasts were an absolute treat, all perfectly cooked by their Chef with 5 star service by amazing Alex. Both managers David & Dave were lovely; nothing was too much trouble - including bringing ice up 3 flights of stairs for our drinks.
We enjoyed a lively & entertaining village jam session in the back bar on our first night; and it was still quiet in the bedroom during the session - great soundproofing!
Top marks for The Shoregate. Highly recommend. Not a thing.
- Yinspire (9/5): Very lovely stay, which exceeded our expectations, with very nice paths to walk along the coast - The personal attention of the staff, really thinking along and the live music in the bar, which was genuine Scottish folk music in an intimate setting.
- Brenda (10/5): Exceptional -
- Amanda (10/5): Lovely place to stay in a great location. - Very modern, clean and comfortable rooms with a lot of thought put into.
Staff were welcoming and happy with any questions and talked fondly of the hotel. Nothing at all
- Sally (10/5): It was a lovely and relaxing stay. - Delicious food and beautiful presentation and service! I cannot think of anything. We so enjoyed our stay!
- Daniel (10/5): wonderful experience! - extremely nice and stalish room, excellent restaurant, wonderful staff. nothing
- Rachel (10/5): They have thought of everything. - Everything was just perfect from service to food and the room, would highly recommend it
- Eileen (10/5): Exceptional - They really provide a luxurious experience at The Shoregate. Our room was beautiful and we were very comfortable. The staff were welcoming, attentive, and very friendly. The location was great, right in the center of Crail and along our walk of the Fife Coastal Way.
The pub is cozy and the perfect place for a pint. We also had dinner in the restaurant and were very happy with our food. Breakfast was lovely as well. There were cheaper accommodations in Crail when we were booking, but for the quality of the food, the room, and everything else we left feeling like we got more than we paid for.
- Murray (10/5): Beautiful rooms, excellent service, wonderful restaurant on-site - I was greeted by the staff with the warmest of welcomes. I was shown to my room, where everything I needed to know was explained to me. I hadn't made plans for dinner, but the concierge immediately got me a table at the restaurant, where I had a delicious meal with extremely attentive (but not overly so) service. Perfect location in the heart of Crail, with plenty of parking nearby. Nothing!
- Margaret (10/5): Exceptional - Newly refurbished bedrooms...quite different.
- Paul (9/5): Luxurious place stay for the night - luxurious place to stay and lovely breakfast also - staff pleasant esp unto being deaf and easy to communicate- if wanna treat urself then go there 😎👍 Nothing
- Alan (9/5): Superb - Room was beautiful and the breakfast was incredible.
- Deirdre (9/5): Superb -
- Innes (10/5): Exceptional -
- Helen (9/5): Superb -
- Lorna (10/5): Amazing - The Shoregate was amazing in terms of professional attentive staff, luxurious surroundings, extremely well appointed room with double bay windows with an amazing sea view. The fixtures and fittings in the room were all top quality. The little touches such as the macaroons and tablet made the stay all the more special. Well done everyone the shoregate team
- William (9/5): Very enjoyable - Very full menu with very large helpings. Bright, tasteful and interesting decoration. Very central location with southern exposure. A second small chair in the bedroom would have been useful
