Guest Reviews
- Werner (8/5): Schönes Zimmer mit Top Lage - Die Lage und die Sauberkeit des Zimmers. WLAN Code war nicht lesbar
- GrahamWhitehead (5/5): Has potential if cleaned up - The location was good and the cottage has potential It wasnt very clean, carpets looked like they needed hoovering around the edges, paint peeling off wall, cobwebs around ceiling, just looking tired and tatty.
- Langley (10/5): Stunning location and great nights sleep - Absolutely stunning location, comfortable bed and the cosiest room. Tim was so friendly and approachable, made sure we knew everything before arriving. Booked as a gift for my best friend, her first trip to whitby and she was completely charmed. Will definitely be back!
- LINDA (9/5): A fantastic stay great location try it you wont be dissapointed - Poppies is a wonderful stay been about 6 or 7 times now very clean excellent location we love staying there and we met the cleaner who does a marvellous job well done to the lady and management Nothing to recall here all great

- Chris (10/5): Absolutely ideal for location and comfort and a great price. Highly recommended - Perfect and just what we needed, went with my daughters for the goth weekend. Very clean accommodation, good location and very happy to get checked in early. Great communication with owners, would highly recommend and would definitely stay again. There was nothing we didn't like. Was absolutely perfect for the night
Very comfortable beds too.

- Emma (8/5): - There is no breakfast provided at the cottage it's room only. The room was quiet and comfortable with good facilities. If you have mobility problems don't book room 4 the one with the larger bed as it's up 3 flights of stairs and 2 of the flights are narrow and spiral, but it is a 17th century cottage.
- Lynn (8/5): - Location was brilliant
It was just what we needed for our short stay to whitby Both my boys are tall and could not stand in the shower however this was fine as we did nit use facilities
- Benjamin (8/5): Perfect location if you are a deep sleeper. - Suberb location , good sized room. The noise in the morning was very loud and annoying .
Window could do with a blind so got woke up very early, had to put a cussion in tge window .

- Diana (9/5): Best Location 👌 - Good location Room upstairs was noise
- Tew (8/5): -
- Gary (6/5): Adequate for a one night stay. - Proximity to town centre Smaller than imagined and steep stairs to access room.
- Jill (10/5): - Lovely authentic room, very comfy with all facilities. Quaint, quirky and tasteful decor. Great 👍 The steps to get to Room 4 are steep . It's a long way up and narrow so make sure you can climb
- Jonathan (7/5): - Location Noise from road
- Aaron (10/5): Relaxing - Location and size Did not know how to turn the heating off
Probably my fault
- Cat (10/5): - Rundum schön! Wir haben es sehr genossen! Wir haben uns sehr wohl gefühlt!
- Janine (10/5): - Amazing place in the perfect location at the bottom of the 199 steps. Easy walking to all prime spots in Whitby x
- Max (9/5): Lovely overnight stay. - Very clean and comfortable and great location.

- Bryony (10/5): -
- Hankey (9/5): - Lovely place to stay
- Vanessa (10/5): Very comfortable and clean - Very clean and central to everything of interest in Whitby Didn’t realise when I booked it that it’s a shared accommodation and you’re just booking a room in a house! I thought it was the whole cottage with a kitchen etc
- Frances (8/5): Short stay great location - Very good location and the owner was fabulous with directions even talked us through on the phone as quite difficult due to get to by car to drop off cases but once in was great
- Nikola (10/5): Excellent location -
- Emma (6/5): Lovely ensuite bedrooms, old building with character - Location was perfect for exploring Whitby. It was right at the bottom of the 199 steps. I can imagine it gets busy/crowded in summer but in low season it was perfect. Large bathroom with a lovely hot shower and heated towel rail. Nice sized room. Tea and coffee making facilities. Nice view from room 3 sitting in bed you can see the whalebone arch and Cooks monument. Glimpses of sea between the pubs across the road. Very near the small south beaches and right amongst the old cottages. Quiet at night. Communication with the owner was excellent. Please be aware this is a very old building so staircase is steep and narrow if you have heavy luggage or a disability. It was fine for me but just a heads up. As advertised, it is just a room and ensuite I did not spend much time there. In hindsight if i visited again I would probably choose a property with a kitchenette and parking as I visited out of season. That being said if you are just looking far somewhere quiet to sleep whilst you expolore this was perfect. Parking in the whole of Whitby is an issue it was advertised as £9 a day but it was £12.50 with no cheaper alternatives that are in walking distance if I had taken this cost into account I may have chosen differently.
- LINDA (10/5): Fantastic little place would definitely stay again the price is very good - We didn't have breakfast self catering accommodation Overall we had a great stay if i had one gripe it would be the bed was so comfortable i couldn't get up earlier than usual 😂

- Julie (10/5): Was a last minute decision for 2 good friends and myself to go for a night at Whitby. Checked through booking.com. Price - Lovely place to stay. Very clean, tea and coffee facilities for mornings. Great to have private bathroom/wc. Can’t even think of anything wrong to say 100% worth the stay Like said before, nothing wrong with the property
- Paula (9/5): - Very clean
- Lynda (8/5): Spur of the moment booking, fabulous location and character of cottage was lovely - Location was good Nothing
- Dale (10/5): We absolutely loved this place, recently renovated and a little gem. - Great location and wonderfuly comfortable Nothing
- lamb (8/5): -
- Wendy (10/5): Little cosy gem - Location is brilliant. Cosy and warm cottage. Nothing to dislike.
- Julie (9/5): Fantastic stay lovely room very pleased - Comfortable convient and spotless and affordable Issues with tv ( sorry )
- Louise (10/5): -
- Sara (8/5): - Helpful owner, great location Nothing
- Sarah (10/5): -
- David (7/5): - The room itself was lovely, nice comfy bed, plenty of room, nice bathroom, and it's in a good location The lack of parking obviously is a downside, but it's managable, the bins were collected the next morning which was a bit of a rude awakening, but that was it
- Susan (8/5): -
- Daryl (10/5): -
- Justine (9/5): -
- Mary (8/5): Very enjoyable. - Excellent location beside the 199 Steps.I loved staying in the old cottage which respected its age but at the same time had all mod cons. I have no complaints. It would have been nice to have a folder with information on Whitby which contained the opening hours of shops and restaurants, some recommendations for breakfast and dinner, things to do in Whitby and transport tickets and fares.
- Leanne (8/5): -
- Victoria (9/5): -
- Jane (10/5): -
- Donna (9/5): Loved this place and although the stairs are tricky the view from the top floor made up for it . Perfect location too 🥰 - Gorgeous traditional old property. Very comfortable and clean. We were on the top floor and the stairs were a little tricky with cases but we understand that this is just the design of the old cottage.
- Alan (5/5): -
- Nicola (8/5): Pillows could have been more comfy but overall was good - The location The steps
- Emma (7/5): Good location and value for money - Location, good size bathroom Old property so to be expected, but could hear every sound and movement from room above
- John (8/5): Perfect location for lovers of the old town
Cosy, comfy and great location - Location is perfect. Bed were comfortable. Spacious bathroom. Thought about the little things to make the place functional Wasn't overall spacious but wasn't expecting this.
- Sharon (10/5): Cosy stay in great location - The location was perfect for us, right at the bottom of the abbey steps. Excellent communication with the owners before and whilst we were there. The property itself was lovely and had everything we could possibly of hoped for. We parked in the long stay car park near the Coop for about £11 for a 24 hour stay and less than a 10 minute walk. Tea, coffee, milk and biscuits were much appreciated. We would definitely stay here again when visiting Whitby. Nothing
- Jade (7/5): - The location was great access to everything you need Only thing was it felt like you were on a slant in the room but they are old buildings
- Paul (10/5): -
- Gareth (3/5): Read before booking - Location and sea view was lovely Bedding was stained which unfortunately made us worried as to what we were sleeping on. Mattress was horrendous which collapsed when sat upon, and springs dug into us all night. This was mentioned in a review around 7 months ago but has not been rectified. The shower was the worst part for us, It does not appear to have been cleaned before our arrival. The shower head had not been cleaned for many months so much so we didn't use it. Shower is also leaking from the wall when we tested it. Toilet and sink was clean.
It's a shame this establishment seems to think it's acceptable to provide sub par rooms for paying guests with poor hygiene stndrds.
- Carol (10/5): -
- Lisa (8/5): - The room was lovely. Clean and spacious To many small winding stairs to get to the room. Would return if in a room on the lower level.
- Sandra (7/5): Location couldn’t be better comes with some outside noise and unsure if we was unlucky but bins / glass collection b - Location right at the foot of 199 steps we do visit Whitby regularly and decided to treat family and friends for a stay over for Christmas Beds are very comfortable however the wooden frames are a bit creaky did wake me up on every movement in the night the stairs for especially older or younger guests going especially to room 4 are to be avoided
- Michelle (9/5): - Location Toilet seat was broken.
- John (9/5): Fantastic service, amazing location in the heart of the old cobbled streets of Whitby near the shops - Julie was very very helpful, we managed to check in early and store our bags the day after. Quick at responding to questions and very happy to help via phone once there. The batteries weren't working in the TV/Firestick remotes
- leandra (8/5): Clean and comfortable in a great location - The location was fantastic and the news was comfortable and the property was very clean The 3 flights of stairs were a bit much for me as I have a knee injury but would be fine for someone fit and able
- Sam (8/5): Perfect location and everything we needed - Fantastic location, comfortable bed and clean TV didn’t work, but Lille something we did wrong, and also we were out most of the time so unnecessary
- Beckie (8/5): Would stay again - Clean, has everything you need, the bed was comfortable and great location. Noise from the street outside/local pubs day/night.. can hear guests upstairs walking around banging and flushing toilet etc .. didn’t really bother us but other people may not like it
- Stevens (8/5): Enjoyable apart from the shower - Location was top on 'breakfast out was great Could not get the shower to work
- Steve (10/5): - Brilliant location. Very well-appointed rooms. Nothing really. A bit of noise outside but not related to the property.
- Aiden (10/5): Just book it - Perfect location
Lovey and clean Everything was spot on
- Appleyard (9/5): -
- Kat (10/5): Comfortable and Clean - Fantastic location, great communication from owners and best of all, a comfortable bed and great night sleep. Love the fact there's plenty of coffee and milk too. Thank you 😊
- Gaby (8/5): -
- Griiiiiff (8/5): - The location was perfect. The room was exactly what was needed and had everything we needed. I couldn't get the tv to work, I just couldn't figure it out, although it was a minimal thing and likely more my issue than anything else.
- John (10/5): - Everything was just so lovely,so clean,so convenient for all that Whitby has to offer. We had a little problem with the TV and our hosts couldn't have been more lovely and helpful minor problem sorted straightaway so big thumbs up to them 😊Would definitely recommend Poppy Cottage and we will return Thank you. No negatives from us.
- Charlotte (9/5): - Great location at the bottom of the 199 steps!
- Becki (10/5): Lovely room, great location, definitely be back again. - Second time we’ve stayed and loved it as much as the first time.
The property is in a great location at the end of church street by the steps to the abbey.
Room 4 is a good size, clean and well decorated. Mattress was a little too soft but that’s a personal preference and not something that detracted in any way from our stay.
- Tammy (10/5): -
- lisa (8/5): it was good for one night wouldn't want to say there for more but the location and view was lovely - location and view window would not keep open had to wedge it and no place to sit would have been better been a double room instead for a room for three.
- Luke (10/5): Perfect location for friends or small family. - Superb location in the heart of the historic core of the town. A stones' throw from the 100 steps and two main pubs. The access was well instructed and easy enough, and the rooms, beds, and facilities were good sizes. Perfect trip for a small family or friends. n/a
- cheryl (10/5): Night stay in poppy cottage - Room was perfect , spotless clean , comfy bed, nice and cozy warm too nice big shower also, julie was really nice and helpful , we will be returning . Everything was perfect

- Blakemore (9/5): -
- Susan (10/5): Poppy Cottage - Cleanliness, helpfulness when we contacted the staff - Tim. Position in a great location, shops cafes Whitby Abbey. Parking not an issue but did take us time to park up. Room small but suited sll 3 of us that stayed there. Soap fresh towels iron, hairdryer complimentary biscuits with tea sugar milk and kettle.. shower room was Immaculate and modern.. Noise at night due to pub very close to us. Didn't really bother us. Handy having a pub there for those who wish to use it.
Nothing we didn't like we were happy with our overall stay... would recommend and we would stay again....
- Maureen (9/5): It was ideal for our short stay. - Ideal location. Clean and comfortable with welcoming touches - tea, coffee, milk and biscuits.
Helpful host when I needed information.
- Rob (9/5): -
- Clare (9/5): - Great location and comfortable beds. Only small criticism would be a check-out a little later at 11am would have been preferable
