- Jane (9/5): I would happily stay at this delightful haven again. - Although our room and bathroom were tiny - as I knew in advance, - they, like all rooms there, were charmingly decorated, equipped. and painted. It was a joy to wake up to. Likewise, the lounge area by the garden and reception was a haven to be in. It was also the area where we were served an excellent breakfast. Our hosts could not have been more welcoming, caring and friendly. They made us feel like we were with old friends. We also liked that a number of restaurants (and apparently shops (although we did not go to any) were in easy walking distance on streets that were well maintained and felt very safe. Really nothing.
- Helen (10/5): Sweet little hotel in urban Liberia - This is a very sweet property with a lovely outdoor area. The host, Edwin, is warm and welcoming, made me coffee at 5:45 am for early departure. Room is simple and clean.
- Federico (10/5): -
- Deborah (9/5): Perfectly pleasant place to soak in over a century of history - The owners were extremely accommodating and generous with their time Super conveniently located. Outdoor space is a bonus for a inner city hotel
The decor is very sweet with many little touches around every corner This is a rare historic find that transitions you to a bygone era. Great breakfast While a adapted, travellers might want to be aware that there is no hot water but showers are surprisingly pleasant
The rooms are small but fit the era of the hotel
- Carrie-Anne (10/5): Understanding and kind - very welcoming. - Edwin is a fantastic host. Very helpful and makes guests feel at ease. Thank you so much. Beautiful courtyard with places to relax if you like.
- Barbara (5/5): - The host was friendly, spoke good English and provided good restaurant recommendations. This is not a 3 star hotel. Hot water is not supplied to the rooms. The rooms are very small, the furniture basic. The garden area was unkempt.
- Jennifer (7/5): -
- Webb (9/5): - The owner was very friendly and accommodating Rooms are a bit small
- Mary (8/5): Welcoming and relaxed - The breakfast was wonderful and Edwin took care of us like we were valued friends . We really appreciate him. It would be better to have blankets in the room and a more comfortable shower.
- Denise (9/5): I highly recommend Hotel Libéria and would not hesitate to return. - Excellent location, caring owners were on site , breakfasts were fresh and healthy - everything was outstanding. It would have been nice to have hot water in the bathroom
It that is something that the hosts are planning to bring in with future upgrades.
- yasmeen (10/5): The hosts were terrific and very helpful. I would return. - It was very pretty and centrally located. The fact that we were there during the town fiesta when fireworks were set off at 5 am.
- Joshua (10/5): -
- Gina (10/5): Lived Hotel Liberia! - This is a beautiful facility, great location and we really enjoyed meeting the proprietors Edwin and Marisol, who gave us a lot of information about all that was going in in Liberia. Nothing, one of our best stays in Costa Rica - great way to finish the trip! Big 'Thank You' to the hosts for such hospitality.
- Annabelle (9/5): Excellent!!!! - L'accueil. L'emplacement.
- Seha (5/5): -
- David (10/5): 100% I will be staying in Hotel Liberia the next time I'm in Costa Rica. - It was a pleasure to meet Edwin! He is a kind-hearted family man who has surrounded himself and the hotel with good people. Edwin gave me excellent directions to the best places to eat nearby. And the breakfast he made for me before I had to fly out was delicious and filling.
- Anna K. (10/5): A true hidden gem in the heart of Liberia! - This charming hotel offers a perfect blend of historic convenience and peaceful tranquility. Locations is fantastic. Exceptional hospitality. Highly recommend it! No hot water, but who needs it when the temperature outside is over 30 C lol
- Brady (10/5): - Nice and tucked away in the heart of Liberia, very nice atmosphere and great hospitality by the owner.
- Laurel (10/5): Edwin and family were very friendly and helpful. - Convenient historical location, and yet quiet.
The hotel was charming -the open lobby with coffee and water available was inviting, and the shady courtyard ‘s flowers and trees were beautiful.
- Evan (10/5): -
- Layla (8/5): Very convenient for one night in Liberia before flight next morning - Very friendly owner, convenient location
- Côté (9/5): -
- Diane (10/5): -
- Anne (5/5): Basic and Clean - Decent, cheap and clean, but very basic. Not much to see in downtown Liberia. If you are staying overnight to fly out of Liberia, stay near the airport instead.
- Raydene (8/5): Perfect overnight spot and good breakfast included. - Location great and quiet. Walking distance to restaurants and the Zocalo. Bedding was a little spare. Comfy bed though. Make sure you ask if there will be hot water. We didn’t have any but told before we arrived so we were prepared.
- Matt (1/5): No hot water and super small rooms. No way this is more than a one star hotel.. - Walking into the lobby and courtyard, the place looked quaint. The rooms were incredibly small. The bathroom even smaller. My dogs crate is bigger than the bathrooms. There is NO hot water to be had in the room. They only give a sheet and one pillow for the bed. The curtains were so thin that you could almost see directly out so no privacy at all and they didn't block the light at all. WiFi doesn't reach into the rooms. No TVs. If this had been advertised as a youth hostel, that would have fit the bill more closely. This place should never have been advertised as a 3 star hotel like booking.com said it was. And how in the world are there over 4 stars from user ratings. This place was the worst hotel I've stayed at in over 30 years.
- Andres (10/5): At this price point, you will not find a better accommodation. - The hotel was situated in the middle town. Many great places local and chain places to eat, good shopping, and easily accessible services like haircuts and pharmacies. The hotel was very clean and the owner is very kind and knowledgeable with his area. Additionally, the hotel owner was happy to recommend places to go and things to do if you asked! NA.
- Patricia (10/5): -
- Francesco (10/5): - Edwin and his wife are amazing, great breakfast and super helpful and friendly. we felt at home! also the hotel is in a perfect spot close to great restaurant and next to the square. we would stay here again if we come back to Liberia
- Daniel (9/5): Perfect for a quick stop in Liberia. - The host is simply fantastic. Dedicated, kind, helpful.
- John (9/5): Quaint, relaxing, centrally located stay. - Hotel Liberia is a quaint, relaxing, ideally located hotel in the heart of Liberia. The hotel, according to Edwin the proprietor, was first opened in 1901. Edwin took over a few years ago and spent 1.5 years getting it ready. Edwin and his family are wonderful people. They make you feel like family. Sitting in the courtyard area is a very relaxing way to start or end one's day. The location is near many restaurants and coffee shops, as well as the central plaza/park. Just adding a small shelf in the shower would be useful. (And don't forget to bring your own shampoos.)
- Nikitenko (9/5): -
- Norberto (10/5): Perfect - Customer service was outstanding.
- Tapani (8/5): -
- Zacharias (10/5): Great place to stay for a night! - I loved the courtyard and Edwin and the staff were very friendly and helpful!
- Joost (9/5): -
- Jakomina (8/5): Perfect - Great place, super kind owner, everything is nice
- Katie (10/5): The most perfect stay in Liberia! - We certainly got lucky booking this great hotel for a night in Liberia. Perfect traditional Costa Rican hotel in a very central location in town - but what really made it for us was the most lovely family that own and run this hotel. Edwin couldn’t have been more hospitable and was fascinating to talk to. We were only sad we couldn’t stay longer. Nothing!
- Daragh (8/5): I’d probably stay here again if I were staying overnight in Liberia. I liked the atmosphere and location, and the necess - Clean, comfortable, a building with character, nice outdoor area. Best part was the host and owner, Edwin. He regaled me with many stories of his interesting life. He also took care to park my car safely overnight, and got fresh coffee ready for my very early morning start. I got some noise from within the building, although I still slept OK.
- Maria Jose (10/5): -
- Caroline (9/5): Perfect room in center of Liberia managed by incredibly kind host - The host was so, so kind. The location was super central and walkable to a bunch of restaurants. Felt very safe. Charming courtyard. Clean room with everything I needed. Nice breakfast for $5 extra Only thing was the water was a bit cold, but I think that’s pretty standard in Costa Rica, I’m just not used to it.
- Sylvia (8/5): - Edwin and family are excellent hosts No hot water in showers
- Cordelia (10/5): We would never stay anywhere else in Liberia. - Two things stand out: One is the lovely, relaxing atmosphere in the reconstructed oldest hotel in Liberia with the central courtyard that brings the outdoors with birds and flowers indoors. The other is the owners who make you feel like friends and guests rather than customers. Edwin will make sure all your needs are met whether it's cooking a delicious breakfast, calling a taxi, recommending a restaurant, providing a refrigerator to store food and a place with equipment to cook or giving you a fascinating history of the region and its politics. Hard to think of something we didn't like.
- Mathieu (8/5): Good location and conveniently located for travelers in transit - Great Friendly service, nice fresh fruit and muesli in the morning, great location No hot water, air conditioning not working.
- Burcin (10/5): - Incredible hosts! I definately recommend to stay here
- Rebecca (8/5): We decided to stay there again at the other end of our trip. We very much enjoyed the peace and tranquility and the grea - Wonderful hospitality, great location, and very comfortable and pretty. Also great price. The breakfast wasn’t the best.
- gerardo (10/5): -
- Hailey (10/5): - First, this is the best location in Liberia. Less than a block to the main park and cathedral, close to downtown, walking distance to everywhere. Also, it’s in the old part of the city, which now has some of the best cafes and the new food hall, Casa Liberia.
Also, the rooms are comfortable, super clean, and located in a historic building with a traditional courtyard. It’s absolutely adorable.
Finally, the family that owns the hotel is super warm and welcoming. I will definitely stay here again when I return.
- Sabine (8/5): -
- Sabine (8/5): -
- Sofia (9/5): - Propriétaires adorables et aux petits soins. Merci pour leur accueil !
- Margaret (10/5): Peaceful and relaxing. We will return at the end of our journey. - The green garden area is pretty and relaxing. The host, Edwin is an asset. He is friendly, helpful and interesting to talk to. The rooms are basic and charming. The internet worked well. The location is excellent for shops, transport, restaurants and bars. Easy local bus ride from the airport. We are going back. There is nothing to not like. The shower is not hot water but we didn’t need it as the weather is hot and it is refreshing to cool off after exploring.
- Jette Schack (10/5): -
- Silke (9/5): -
- Cadin (10/5): -
- ROSEMARIE (10/5): I would stay at this hotel again. - The clean courtyard a pleasant place to sit. Made to feel like special guests. The owner assisted us with any issues and full of knowledge on places to eat and visit in the town. The hotel located in a central area with easy access from the airport and restaurants. Found everything enjoyable.
- Auday (10/5): great place, lovely staff!! - Staff was incredibly kind, quiet location, cute scenery The shower was the only thing we weren’t pleased with
- Acevedo (9/5): Superb -
- Nina (10/5): Exceptional - Very convenient location in the centre of Liberia - easy to walk from the bus terminal and lots of restaurants and cafés around. There's a beautiful courtyard to hang out and it was surprisingly quiet at night. Rooms are small but very clean.
But what makes this place so special is his owner and his family: Edwin is such a wonderful host and really takes care of his guests. I only spend two nights together with my 5year old son at Hotel Liberia but Ewwin was so welcoming like I have stayed there for much longer.
- Steve (8/5): Excellent value & location near the park in Liberia - Edwin speaks English & was very friendly & helpful. Took me to a local breakfast place also.
- Matthew (9/5): Superb - Excellent location with cafes and nice restaurants near park in Liberia.
- Kellie (7/5): Charming and affordable - Hotel Liberia is a lovely hotel right in the center of town across from the beautiful Catholic Church. Many restaurants, coffee shops and general shops are within minutes of the hotel.
The hotel is the oldest in Libera and it is charming. However it comes with very limited amenities so if you stay keep in mind to bring shampoo, hair drier. The host supply you with soap and (very clean) bath towels. What the hotel lacks in amenities, it thrives in cleanliness. The floors are made of very beautiful old terracotta tiles and they are well kept and very clean. The sheet (and bath towels) are also very clean.
The host, his wife and child are lovely and kind to a fault. This hotel is a gem and an incredible value if you are ok with going with less than what you'd find a commercial hotel. The queen mattress in my room was all coils so I slept in the twin bed which was perfect. The queen mattress needs to be replaced. And although the weather was warm and it was refreshing, it would have been nice to have water warmer than lukewarm.
- Chapple (10/5): Excellent, quaint spot in a good location. - Lovely host, very friendly, welcoming and accommodating! Just one thing, showers were one te.p only, kind of cool. But in the hot weather, that's just fine! I should have left my AC for the room off/not set as cool until after I showered.
- Miked0 (10/5): Great find - Edwin was a wonderful host. The hotel is in center of city's historic area. The courtyard and open lobby area are lovely and comfortable - nothing fancy, but also nothing pretentious. Same for the rooms - modest but clean and comfortable. Good a/c. We opted for breakfast - good coffee and delicious fresh fruit. Off street parking available.
- Brad (9/5): Superb -
- Rebecca (10/5): Lovely spot with an amazing host family! - The courtyard was such a nice spot to hang out. Very quiet and peaceful. Edwin was an amazing host! He answered all our questions and more. I would highly recommend the breakfast.
- Ashley (10/5): Would definitely stay again next time in Liberia as it is a great location in the city with h good restaurants in the ar - Historical hotel built in 1902 with a lot of original features. Owner is updating the facility as needed The owner Edwin went above and beyond to make us comfortable. Arranged for a taxi to pick us up at 4:00 AM and even made us coffee that morning to send us off with.
- Bertollini (9/5): Authentic and close to everything - Very basic lodging but the hosts are friendly and the location is fabulous. Perfect for staying the night in Liberia after a long flight. Relaxing courtyard area and the air conditioning is great. Close to dining options and feels very safe. Good for families with tweens or teens looking for a more authentic experience.
- Michelle (10/5): comfortable, accomodating, and enjoyable - Edwin went above and beyond to accommodate a last minute change through clear communication and working together we were able to enjoy our time in Liberia! Walkable to great restraints and the museum!
- Villalobos (6/5): TV please - No TV
- Patrick (9/5): Superb -
- Lou (8/5): Very good - Hotel is not super fancy or elaborate. The rooms are small yet very clean and comfortable. The location right in the center of town is excellent.
- Barbara (10/5): Exceptional - Excellent location and the owners are a really friendly couple. They’re renovating so it still needs work but it was comfortable enough, rooms. Are small ,they have a beautiful patio. There’s AC in each room.
- Michelle (8/5): Very good -
- Kathryn (8/5): Very good - The rooms at this hotel surround a lovely inner courtyard. Charming and helpful hotel owner, Edwin, prepared a tasty, traditional Costa Rican breakfast with coffee that we ate in the courtyard. Later we took an Uber to the airport for the first time. Edwin waited with us for the car to arrive and helped us to communicate with the driver. The rooms are simple and small but we had a very good experience.
- Patrick (8/5): Well worth it - Good place near Centre with restaurants nearby
- Yorston (8/5): Very good - Great location in central Liberia, extremely friendly owner and staff who went out of their way to help. Yummy homeade fresh fruit, granola, yogurt breakfast and eggs and pintos.
- Robert (7/5): Quirky choice in the centre of Liberia. The oldest hotel in town? - Lovely garden in a private courtyard. Lovely owner host. Great breakfast (at a charge). Free coffee for all. Small, old rooms. Even smaller bathrooms 1960s style. Lack of any modern amenities, no soap or hot water in bathroom. Not the best vfm at $70+ pn.
