• Alex H. (10/5): Great place to stay to explore Ilfracombe! - Wonderful hotel. It is in a great situation, close to the sea front and Ilfracombe town centre. The staff were fantastic, really helpful at all times and gave us lots of advice for where best to visit, and what cliffpaths were shut, etc. Breakfast was included and excellent quality and portion sizes. We particularly loved the little library tucked away on the entrance floor!

• Adriana (10/5): - I had a lovely 2-night stay at the Carlton Hotel in Ilfracombe. From the moment I arrived, everything felt welcoming and well-organised. The room was clean, comfortable, and had everything I needed for a relaxing stay. A special mention to Michael at reception, who was incredibly helpful and friendly throughout my visit. The hotel is in a great location, making it easy to explore Ilfracombe and the surrounding area. Overall, it was a very pleasant stay, and I would happily return in the future.
• Michael (10/5): The Carlton Hotel, Ilfracombe - a perfect stay - From the moment we walked in the experience was a joy. Michael the owner was the perfect host. He made us feel really special. He knew where we went each day and asked about it when we returned. The whole hotel was spotlessly clean. Our large room was great; comfortable bed wonderful shower in the en suite. There were comfy chairs plus a table and chairs. The restaurant was well appointed and the food delicious. All the staff, housekeeping and restaurant seemed to take a real pride in their work. All in all, this is one of the best hotels that we have stayed in and when we return to north Devon we will certainly stay at the Carlton. Nothing we didn't like. It was a great experience.

• peter (1/5): I’ve been using booking.com for years but never again as will family and friends. - I had to give a score or l couldn’t proceed to giving a comment,l never actually got to stay there as the war in the Middle East put and end to that so l really can’t comment on the actual hotel but l can comment on the treatment l received when l had to cancel,absolutely disgusting,the owner of the Carlton tried to say it was non-refundable which was absolute nonsense as l booked months in advance from Australia and lm just touching on 80 years of age so believe me l wouldn’t book a hotel that was non-refundable,numerous e-mails asking for proof from the hotel and booking.com about this was fruitless as both blamed the other and l wound up $1,200 dollars down the drain,like l said l can’t complain about the facilities but l can complain about the management and it’s absolutely atrocious. Couldn’t tell you but l wouldn’t stay there if l was homeless.

• Sarah (10/5): Perfect easter Bank Holiday stay. - Absolutely brilliant hotel. Very well run. Attentive staff they couldn't do enough for us. Beautiful breakfast with a great selection. The hotel was spotlessly clean. The bedrooms were very clean but it was a little small. You could do with more shelves in the bathroom for toiletries but all in all the rooms were beautiful with a comfy bed.

Dim lighting in the dining room at breakfast time. Dimmed lights in the evening is appropriate but not in the morning when a nice light, bright start is preferable.

• Victoria (9/5): Good ! - I liked the location of the hotel I also found most of the staff to be very helpful and kind. The first night I arrived late and there car park was full however the lovely man on check in helped guide me to a safe place to park my car around the corner. The morning i checked out I had a lovely chat with the lady who was checking me out. On my first day as I arrived back from a day out visiting a friend I went up to the reception desk to ask about booking for dinner it was full there was no problem with that I did leave it late and was a busy Saturday night so I understand however the male receptionist I didn’t catch his name (he had glasses) was very rude about the fact I had taken my key with me that day. I was never made aware I wasn’t meant to take my key when I explained this to him he said I was lying as he had told me when he checked me in however he was not the same kind man who had checked me in the night before. It is a real shame he was so rude for no reason he did not even apologise after. That is the only disappointing thing about my stay.

• Brown (10/5): Warm welcome, lovely hotel, excellent location. - Lovely welcome at check in. Very good breakfast, lots of choice and very attentive staff. Room was very clean with everything we needed. Even though there was a wedding function on, we were still welcomed to use the bar and very little noise heard. We had the twin room which was a bit small but loved the fact it looked out to the front of the hotel. I think we were also lucky to get the last parking spot, which was just big enough for my car but would not have catered for my husbands.

The room we had was very small to be a double and the bathroom was so small as to be uncomfortable. We stayed here in September and had a much bigger and nicer room. The hotel didnt seem full so dont understand why we were given such a small room

• Sue (8/5): Very enjoyable - I was particularly impressed with our breakfast waitress Fri, Sat & Sun morning. Breakfast itself was excellent . I also IOU had occasion to speak to one of the chambermaids and she was friendly & loyal!! Free parking was a bonus! It didn’t spoil our stay but painting the hotel in a such a strong shade of blue doesn’t enhance the exterior. A little attention to the steps & weeds would be very beneficial especially as this is the quiet season & I suggest time would be available. One other thing I would mention is that in hospitality we always say ‘you never get a second chance to make a first impression’ so when we arrived and the chap behind the desk carried on his conversation whilst I stood waiting, I wasn’t impressed . I had no acknowledgment & it seemed the conversation was not work related. Shame as everything else was great!
• Carly (10/5): A very nice mini break away. - Well what a weekend. Beautiful room, very well decorated and clean. Hotel decor was exceptional, breakfast menu was extensive and delicious. Had a library and gym too and board games, a bar for evening drinks if needed. Great location tucked around the corner from the tunnels and hotel had on site parking. Nice and warm in the room, the shower was very powerful and the towels lovely and soft. The bed was massive, we stayed in a king room and was very comfortable. Thank you very much for a lovely stay and shall book again if we find ourselves back down your way 😊 There wasn’t actually anything we didn’t like.

• Linsey (5/5): Not bad. - We had a lovely evening meal, and Michael and the staff were friendly and helpful. Our room was TINY and the TV was a bit dodgy. It was all slightly more old-fashioned that in looked from the photos.

• Jordan (10/5): - The staff were friendly and welcoming, the breakfast offered plenty of great options to choose from, and the room was clean, comfortable, and perfect for our stay. Overall, a great experience. I’d definitely come back!
• Kaye (8/5): It was fun and I would stay again - Breakfast options were good for vegan/vegetarians. All staff were very friendly and hospitable. Lovely location with short and easy access into Ilfracombe. Very glad to have free parking Although I had been advised the room was small, it was still smaller than I had anticipated. It was also constantly extremely warm in my room, even though it was Sept/Oct. A fan was provided but did little to help. I am not sure all guests were aware dogs were allowed.. they should be to avoid the judgemental stares and comments at breakfast. Not sure whether I would say having to hand keys in every time I left the hotel was something I didn't like but it was strange, and I didn't like the fact that I had no option but to leave them on the desk at reception if it wasn't being manned at the time
• Michelle (8/5): Lovely hotel, would stay there again, breakfast needs improvement. - Super friendly staff. Lovely room. Huge bed, really comfortable. Modern, clean, lovely atmosphere. Lovely evening meal, the bar man is brilliant, he certainly knows his way around a bar. Breakfast was not as good as the Hotel. We had a coach party in and twice there were not certain things available on the menu. Breakfast is quite basic. I had a sausage sandwich, it was served on a plate, not even cut in half, really thin bread so it went very soggy. You have to pay for a special coffee. I asked for sour dough bread but they said no, even though sour dough was available with an egg and avocado.
• Katherine (10/5): - What a lovely hotel so attentive and friendly. The breakfast was very enjoyable with great quality food. The hotel and room was modern and spotlessly clean with good facilities. All of the staff were very friendly and informative, it was so nice to stay in a dog friendly hotel that still offered all the comforts of home. We would 100% recommend to anyone with or without a dog.

• Nathan (9/5): Excellent staff and good value for money - The staff at the Carlton were excellent, especially Michael. Nothing seemed to be too much, including booking taxis and recommending places to eat. The rooms are clean and are a good size. Breakfast was delicious with a variety of options. Off-road parking is also a bonus.
