Guest Reviews
- Lisa (4/5): We wouldn't stay again - it's very cold in winter. - Good location, quiet road and a short walk from town. Parking directly outside the house. Everything seemed clean. Beds were comfortable. There was a drainy smell lingering in the house in the downstairs bathroom - if you opened the back door it was very pungent. Obviously there's an underlying problem.
The house was extremely cold - uncomfortably so. Most of the radiators have wooden box covers on them, which I don't think helped. Our stay was over a couple of winter days (temperatures just above 0 degrees celcius outside) and the house brochure says the thermostat is set to come on to a comfortable temperature in the mornings and evenings and tells you NOT to mess with the timer settings. Because of the low temperature fixed on the timer settings (20 degrees celcius), once the timed heating kicked in, it actually turned off the heating if you'd turned up the thermostat outside of these times, so it barely ever got above 20 degrees. We had to put our coats and scarves on to eat breakfast at 8.30am.
We didn't cook anything other than breakfast there, but it would have been nice if there was a cafetiere or coffee machine in the kitchen, and a few more mugs, as if there were only four, which doesn't work if some are in the dishwasher.
Also beware - a neighbourhood cat seemed to like to dart into the house at any opportunity, so if you are bringing in luggage or groceries, keep your eye on the door.
We chose this accommodation for the location, as our friends live on a neighbouring road, however for the price, I wish we'd stayed in a hotel as the additional space we had in the house couldn't be enjoyed because it was uncomfortably cold so we couldn't relax.
- Anne (6/5): Great Character House. Needs Serious Attention - This little cottage is in a good location and with a bit of trial and error we found a good walking route into town which took about 15 mins. The house was quiet and the road wasn't crammed with cars so ubers were able to pick us up outside our door. The garden is probably a real asset in the summer and the house is spacious for 2 people and would still be ok for a family or two couples. The twin bedded room is actually bigger than the photo shows. There is room to move easily between the two beds. The chairs and sofa in the living room are comfortable as are the beds. As has been reported previously, the downstairs bathroom obviously has a serious drain problem. The smell when we arrived was really bad. When we were out the following day I bought an odour neutraliser and some drain cleaner. These obviously only masked the smell - I really think some serious investigation is needed, but it made things more bearable. As it's directly off the kitchen it needs urgent attention. I think prospective guests should know that the stairs are really steep and there are two steps outside the twin bedroom. We kept the landing light on all night which wasn't a problem - the doors fit well.
Cleanliness is an issue. Everything is superficially clean but I dropped an earring in my bedroom and whilst searching between the bedside table and the bed the dust was bad. The centre of all the rooms were clean.Edges were not! No doormat inside the front door either. Although we took our shoes off immediately on entering, it was a cold and wet November and we entered straight onto carpet.
Trying to find instructions for the oven which was running very hot, the QR code in the home pack labelled 'oven' brought up 'Beach huts to rent in St Anne's on Sea' 😆 We never did work out the oven settings. The dishwasher is on its last legs. No instructions for that.
The radiator in the dining room was stone cold. May only need bleeding but because it has a cover we couldn't access it. This meant there was one radiator in the whole of the downstairs but the sofa is pushed against it. I can't count the little towel rail in the smelly bathroom because we kept the door shut ! When we arrived the house was freezing. Temperature was set to 19° and room temperature was showing as 14. If we pushed it up to 24° we could get a room temperature of 20 downstairs. But then the bedrooms were sweltering.
What could have been the most serious thing was what happened when we arrived on a cold, dark November evening at 5pm.
- Ruth (9/5): Perfect stay - The house was spacious and well furnished. We were a short work from the centre of York and had all the amenities we needed. The street was quiet and beds very comfortable!
- Hugo (9/5): - Gezellig, sfeervol, proper, comfortabel huisje in een rustige buurt op wandel afstand van het centrum. Het welkomstpakketje werd gewaardeerd. Alles was perfect in orde.
- Anthony (8/5): NIce clean house, reasonable location for city centre access. - Location was pretty good for walking into centre. If you like a firm mattress you will be happy with the beds. All rooms were clean and in good condition. Nice quiet area. I can recommend going for drinks in the local pub 'The Punch Bowl', a friendly pub with good prices. Not sure of the purpose of having a full bathroom downstairs, where you have to walk through the kitchen to get to it. Built in cupboards were shallow but they did supply enough hangers that had hinged hooks to fit the space. Only had one dishwasher tablet for a 2 night stay.
- Martin (9/5): Very good - N/a Downstairs toilets have a bit of a ventilation/ smell issue , but ok if you keep the door closed
- Wesley (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lesley (7/5): Nice location, spacious house. But it
needs someone
tweaks to be really good. - Spacious, clean, nicely decorated ....in good location It was very cold in the morning. Adjust your timer to warm the place up properly in winter first thing. Very annoying!
Make the kitchen better equipped:
For example:have proper sharp kitchen knives for cooking....we gave up trying to cut the loaf of bread we'd bought!
Get a cafetiere: most rentals have them
- Devon (9/5): nice clean well-equipped home in excellent location - excellent location, close to the centre, which is great as car parking is quite expensive in the city. Parking was as describe, easy access to the keys, well equipped and comfortable house. drain smell in bathroom which will be reported to the agency.
- Ann (9/5): Lovely neighbourhood and parking, will book again! - Quiet location, close to the Minster and ideal for The Shambles market.
It was ideal for relaxing and doing revision for GCSEs and ICBs.
Garden; sadly it was a little cold so we couldn’t enjoy it to the full. Great neighbours and chatting over the fence.
Stays York were really helpful. Downstairs bathroom with no way to lock the door. Could have been embarrassing. No separate toilet. Only one key until we were given another.
- Chris (9/5): A wonderful home from home, I cannot recommend it highly enough - A lovely quiet street, with parking. Really was a home from home. Everything we needed was there, it was a great location, with good facilities. The place was clean and welcoming. The best thing was, we could come and go as we pleased Nothing really could have been improved. Yes, the bathroom was downstairs, but that was not a reason to nit like the house. We would certainly come back and stay there when we visit York again
