Guest Reviews
- Eva (10/5): The only accommodation I’d rent on Iona - The gorgeous Machair House offers an excellent, homey feeling. It is charmingly and cosily decorated. Offers all necessary commodities and with its spacious layout grants enough room to let the traveler breathe comfortably and come to profound rest. Beautifully cared for, which one can really feel and which adds to the general positive effect, the island itself can have on someone. Would 10/10 recommend and hope to visit again.
- Doug (10/5): Great stay, the property owner was really nice. Collected us from the ferry and made us feel very welcome. Would definit - Lovely house in a great location. Everything was good
- shirley (8/5): We got a real sense of this beautiful island. - It was cosy, clean and comfortable. Beautiful views and handy beach! Nothing
- Mark (9/5): A fantastic house with an amazing host! - Iona is our favourite wee island. We always leave a bit of our heart there. We have stayed in different parts of the island, our first time at this end and at this time of year. Machair House has views from all the windows, we only used one bedroom but spent time just looking out of the others! A beautiful bedroom with a very comfy bed. Sunrise and sunset views, the sea, the spouting cave. Very comfy outdoor furniture which we we got the use of before the weather turned. We had one glorious day showing Iona at its best, some not so good. Then Storm Amy arrived with 90mph winds to take away our power, phone signal and ferries! You always have to be one step ahead on Iona and we made do but the log burner did overtime keeping us cosy, boiling water and heating food. Jamie was amazing!! So welcoming and helpful. What a treat getting picked up from the ferry. He made sure we were ok during the storm and kept us informed of the ferry situation and even made us some lovely pancakes. The house is a mix of old and new which tells the story of the family home. We loved our stay even in a storm 😀 thank you Jamie for helping relieve some of the stressy bits of the week. Our 9 not 10 was for the kitchen, it needed organising. We had nowhere suitable for our food but cleared some stuff to use the open shelves. Maybe some plastic storage boxes on there for storing food items would be good. The coating on the bottom of the pans wasn’t great and that cutlery drawer ☺️ but….the positives always outnumber the negatives on Iona!
- Kenneth (10/5): Iona at its best. - Stunning location, charming host, extremely cosy and comfortable, well equipped with lots of ‘extras’ - beach towels, waterproofs, outside mats etc. etc. There is not much accommodation available on Iona and this is a gem! As mentioned in other reviews- an upstairs bathroom/ toilet would undoubtedly benefit the property otherwise we ( more than) liked everything about the property.
- Laura (10/5): Best week ever! - What an amazing place to spend our 25th Wedding Anniversary. Everything was absolutely perfect, the house is warm and welcoming and full of charm with the most comfortable beds ever and has everything you need and much more provided. The location is breathtaking and in an ideal position being only a short walk to all the beautiful beaches with incredible views of the sea, the landscape and across the machair, the tranquillity especially in the evenings when the only sounds came from the breeze and birdsong was restorative for the soul. Iona is a truly magical island which stays with you long after leaving and Machair House is the perfect place to stay to soak it all up. Jamie was a wonderful host and a joy to be around and nothing was too much trouble, the lifts from and back to the ferry with our bags were much appreciated. And of course a special mention has to go to Bleu who always gave us a warm greeting and a head to stroke 🙂 Thanks so much for having us and looking after us so well, David and I can't wait to return! The only thing we didn't like was leaving!
- Emily (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful place
- Jayne (10/5): Exceptional -
- Claire (10/5): Beautiful and very relaxing. - The location was absolutely perfect. Will couldn’t have been more welcoming or helpful. The lifts to and from the ferry on arrival and departure were greatly appreciated. Nothing really. I missed having a dishwasher but it’s a small thing that didn’t really matter.
- Eleonora (10/5): Peaceful beautiful location - Location is amazing! View of both sunrise and sunset from front of house. Starry sky at night. Peaceful sheep and cattle. Nearby lovely beach. Great walks. Very quiet and restful. Feel recharged.
Hosts jamie and will both very kind and helpful :-)
- Wilson (8/5): Absolutely loved it, and being within sight of the Spouting Cave was exciting. - NA No loo upstairs
Very creaky stairs which were quite steep so difficult for anyone with mobility issues to cope with at night
- Michelle (10/5): Exceptional -
- Marie (8/5): Wonderful stay in a lovely house - We loved the position of the house and the sun room had a great view The bathroom was a bit outdated and could do with being modernised
- Maeve (9/5): Iona is very special, it is magical being on the island, being able to walk everywhere is a bonus. - Location was fabulous, the views from the sunroom towards the sea were gorgeous. Jamie and Will were both excellent hosts, easy to communicate with and very helpful and responsive with any questions about the island and the house. We liked everything.
- Sarah (9/5): Wonderful! - Such a lovely warm welcome from Will, gorgeous views, highly recommended!
- Mcmillan (9/5): Superb - Location was perfect Stair carpet loose my friend fell down the stairs due to this
- Anonymous (8/5): Very good -
- John (9/5): Lovely week spent in Machair House on the beautiful island of Iona. Perfect base for the family. -
- Josephine (9/5): A wonderful week in a beautiful location. - Wonderful to be met at jetty and driven to the house. Beautiful views from house. Clean and fresh throughout.
Extra touches such as beach towels and games provided. Well equipped kitchen.
Lovely bottle of bubbly as welcome gift on arrival!
A thoroughly enjoyable stay. Bunk beds under sloping roof more suitable for children than adults.
- Cath (10/5): Peaceful, relaxing, homely and tranquil. - wonderful homely and spacious house which was the best place we have stayed on Iona. The fact that traditional features were retained added to its comfort and charm and it really felt like staying in a family home , but one with necessary touches that a guest would want. We particularly appreciated the beach towels that were made available .
Highlights were the sun trap conservatory , comfortable beds, spacious garden with probably one of the most picturesque washing line locations I’ve ever seen!
Jamie the host was always on hand and it felt like we were being looked after from afar with nothing too much trouble.
Would strongly recommend this lovely place ( as well as wanting to keep it a secret so we can keep returning 🙂). Having to say goodbye to it!
- Ruth (10/5): Perfect location, wonderful hosts & incredible views - On arrival in Iona, we were met from the ferry by our lovely hosts Jamie and his mother Kate. They could not have been more welcoming, driving us to the lovely Machair House, their tranquilly situated family home at the back of the island, surrounded by sheep and lambs grazing happily against the backdrop of the flower strewn Machair and the lulling waves of The Bay at the Back of the Ocean.
Machair House is as warm and welcoming as its hosts, with a splendid sunroom, relaxing sitting room, very comfortable bedrooms, and well-equipped kitchen.
I happened to be celebrating a special birthday during my stay on Iona, and our hosts made it even more special by providing a huge birthday balloon and a bottle of fizz!
We spent two wonderful weeks in Iona staying at Machair House. How perfect, after a day-out exploring the island, to return to this cosy and much-loved haven.
- Penny (10/5): absolutely glorious weeks stay at the most beautiful position overlooking the bay at the back of the ocean. Jamie couldn - We loved the glorious sun porch and the cosy bedroom and the views all round! it was well equipped for kids to play and had lambs leaping in the garden!
- Alison (10/5): Lovely, comfortable House in a great location for exploring Iona - The location was perfect, tucked away at the back of this stunning island, near a beautiful deserted beach, even in August! The Staffa trip was fantastic! I can't really think of anything...We loved our stay there.
I would advise holiday-makers to think ahead about their luggage, bring wheeled trolleys/shoppers, although we had lots of help to get our stuff from the port to the house by car.
