Guest Reviews
- Athina (8/5): -
- Sylke (7/5): Alles bestens - Zentral gelegen in Samara. Daher alles super.
- Fallon (10/5): Welcoming hostel in Samara - Annie and the staff are lovely and so helpful. Location is close to the beach, grocery stores, and local bus. The room was cleaned every day and had good A/C. Good kitchen facilities and public spaces to hang out. I especially loved the adorable kittens and mama cat! The only small suggestion I have is that the pillows could be better.
- Rebecca (4/5): Clean, safe, close to beach - but I just can not recommend staying here - Stellar location! Two blocks from the door to having your feet in the ocean. Walkable to restaurants, shops, grocers, and booking agents for activities. Street/bar noise was drowned out by the fan/AC in the private rooms. Room was very clean, fresh linens and towels every couple of days. Two big, glaring things: 1) They only accept cash - and only colones. This felt like a scam. I was charged well over 200.000,00 colones for a one week stay in a private room ($70+ USD/night). I never received any communication that this would need to be paid in cash. To top it off, the owner used an exchange rate from a year ago (current rate was 455/1, she used 470/1) and then told me that "business owners know the rates best". She told me that "this happens all the time" which leads to believe it's an intentional miscommunication on her part. Everyone in town accepts credit.
2) I opted for a private room in a hostel over a hotel because I love the vibe of a hostel - the community, the knowledge of local eateries/hot spots, the ease of access to activities, the communal areas... this place did not have a community vibe. They hosted a few long-term residents, who were very kind, but kinda... lived there? There was nothing about local activities or where to eat or what nearby beaches to travel to... on the first day I asked the owner about grocery stores and the answer was so convoluted, I didn't ask another one.
3) A few other small things that wouldn't have mattered if the other things weren't a bummer - they ask you to turn off the A/C and fan while not in the room, so we always came home to a stuffy room (this seems reasonable, but I felt we were paying a fee that should afford some comfort). The electricity (and thus A/C & WiFi) turned off a few times while we were there (no back-up system). The community fridge broke during our stay (they did get a temporary fridge by the front door while it was getting fixed). The WiFi was very unreliable, sometimes not working at all. The community area was a few uncomfortable hammocks and some tables with the chairs stacked to the side - absolute bare minimum.
- Christophe (9/5): - Très bien situé, accueil fort sympathique, Conseils et renseignements parfaits. Un endroit pour se reposer.
- Simon (8/5): -
- Viera (5/5): I did not like their atitude about booking! They do not want to loose the profit! - It was clean. They charged me 12.000 colones, about 3.500 more than is listed on booking. We had no controller for air condition, and it was freezing! When I left the door open, the owner got mad! Their excuse was that guest brake/damage the controller Why they do not get deposit to avoid that?.🤔Me and my friend got sick due to that. The other guess like to be in cold, like freezer, and because of that, they ignored us,but we payed the same for our bed. My mattress was not comfortable, it was not strait, dented for long time use. Also we were told, that all the rooms
are mixed, but on your site it mention
choice for mixed or not. That was kind of weird.I would not go back!
Nächstmal würden wir in US Dollars bezahlen.
On pense même à y retourner :)

- Floribeth (1/5): I didn’t stay. - Nothing Everything
- Caroline (10/5): -
- Prévot (10/5): -
- Nova (9/5): Toppen!

-*Super* friendly and helpful manager ... thanks for everything Annie!! 🙏🏻 -Lumpy pillow 😑
- Jamie (7/5): Good -
- Gardner (9/5): Superb - Central location, large common area, great kitchen facilities.
- Emily (10/5): Fantastic first hostel experience - This was my first time in a hostel. I had a private room with bathroom. The room and facilities were very clean and well maintained. There is no hot water heater (very typical for this area ) and I did not miss it. Showers were good with great water pressure. I had a bin for my food in the commercial refrigerator and no one bothered it, it was very easy to cook and prepare my foods. The family that runs the hostel are welcoming, kind, and attentive. It was a great experience. I was in town for language school and the lovely hostel and center of town location were perfect. It was very easy to swim in the ocean twice a day at sunrise and sunset. Mercado is across the street. Interbus dropped me off at the door. Very easy and I would stay again. Felt very safe at all times. I really enjoyed my stay. Nothing bad to say here!
- Laura (10/5): One of my best hostel stays - A wonderful place with a great vibe right in the center of Sámara. An extremely attentive and friendly family running it. Very clean bathrooms, comfy beds, nice kitchen and open common space. Instantly felt welcome and at home!
- Aisha (6/5): Nice staff and short stay - the location and staff! shes beyond nice and helpful along with her sister I had seen a huge dead cockroach when I entered my room, due to power surge my ac was also off all night
- Jeff (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sara (10/5): Exceptional - Super clean and organised shared kitchen. Close to the beach and town.
Super sunsets
- Valschaerts (10/5): Exceptional - Very nice place to stay and good location.
The staff is very friendly
- Stanton (10/5): Best budget accommodation in Samara. - Clean, friendly staff, great location, quiet, great kitchen, comfortable bed, inviting common areas, strong wifi, interesting guests, great value.
- Abeed (8/5): Very good -
- Stanton (10/5): Clean, friendly staff, great location, quite, great kitchen, great value. - Clean, friendly staff, great location, quite, great kitchen, great value.
- Dan (6/5): Pleasant -
- Alexandru (10/5): Like being at home while on vacations -
- Scott (10/5): super friendly and clean. - Very welcoming and informative about your stay. All staff and people look you in the eye and address you as a person. Probably the cleanest stay in Samara for me, possibly all of CR. Value is there. location is super. I honestly didn't dislike anything about this place. I guess, for some concerned, though I'm not sure why, in Samara, I didn't have any hot water. But, like I said. if you need it, you might be in the wrong place.
- Lukas (10/5): We originally planned on staying for a week, but we enjoyed our stay in the hostel and the amazing town of Samara so muc - It was just perfect. We were treated like family and felt at home from the first second on. The people do it by heart and help you with anything you need even if they don’t have to. It’s just the kindness and the pura Vida lifestyle.
The rooms and the toilets are always clean and even if you don’t want to chill in your room you can easily relax at the couch area with the tv.
From our side an absolute 10/10.
We would highly recommend this hostel over any hostel we stayed in Costa Rica and are definitely planning on coming back Nothing. It’s a must stay if you are looking for a hostel in Samara.
We simply have nothing to complain about. The time at the hostel was just perfect, especially for the price.
Best hostel we’ve seen so far.
- Philippe (9/5): Great staff and amazing food - The staff was amazing. They even cooked authentic ceviche for us! We loved our stay. It was a short walk to the beach. The staff was also very helpful with booking activities and shuttles.
- Anaide (8/5): Very good - The location was great
Annie was really nice
The place is clean The room are really small, luckily I was alone in the dorm but I can’t imagine to be 4 in there !
- Nancy (7/5): Very tight room - Well lit and safe neighborhood. Super convenient to grocery stores, restaurants and beach. Location is perfect walk to bus stop for 4am departure. Tight space in 8-bed mixed dorm. Room relatively dark with window covered by curtain and blocked by beds and lockers. Fan simply insufficient for the extreme heat and humidity in Samara. Open space outside of dorm is cluttered with beds that serve as couches.
- Julia (10/5): Amazing host and great location. - The people at Hostel Sámara were super friendly and welcoming. Annie was an amazing host who was always happy to talk and answer all my questions. The dorm and bathroom were very clean and tidy. The location was perfect, right in the center of Sámara and within a short of walk of the beach, restaurants, and shops. Thanks Annie for an incredible stay!
- Beth (9/5): Superb -
- Matthew (7/5): Good -
- Jessyca (9/5): Superb -
- Dana (7/5): Good location and helpful stuff - A lot of space. I chose the smaler room without ac there was a fan. Was hot. No windows.
- Rachel (10/5): Great hosel great location - A good welcoming hostel. Great atmosphere and excellent staff Nothing
- John (9/5): Superb -
- Nomar (10/5): Super clean, very organized, well-equipped comfortable right downtown two blocks from lovely beach - Super clean!!! well organized with foot shower on the way in to keep the sand down in common areas. Terrific kitchen. Clotheslines available to dry beachwear. Safe - there is a keyed/buzzer front gate whenever desk is not staffed. Water refill station. Nice staff. Right downtown two blocks to beach. Very nice (covered) dining/working space. nothing.
- Michelle (9/5): Superb - The staff were all very friendly and helpful. This is the only place we stayed where we were asked if we wanted our garbage changed and room tidied. Large kitchen area with designated spots in the fridge for each room. Our room was spacious, clean and quiet. Very convenient location, close to the beach, restaurants and grocery store. We appreciated having cold drinking water as Samara was by far the hottest stop on our journey! There is no designated parking however we had no issue parking across the road. Cash only
- Josune (10/5): Good choice - It’s all very tidy and clean. Very close to the beach. Very helpful staff. We had a very enjoyable stay
- Theodoros (8/5): Good location, kitchen and facilities - Pretty good and clean place to stay and would easily recommend it. The kitchen is pretty big and clean so you can prepare your meal. The place is also recommended for digital nomads (or for people who want to just check their emails. Pretty comfortable beds, lockers etc. They could accept cards like pretty much all of the small businesses do in Costa rica. I think the air condition in the dorm rooms work on a specific schedule so take this into consideration before booking.
- Nic (10/5): Comfy and felt like home - The staff here made this place feel like home. I chatted with them daily and they always offered help for booking and information. Michele and Annie are wonderful humans! I have no bad words for this spot. I’ll be back !
- Daniel (10/5): Would love to go back and stay there again! - One of the best hostels I stayed in Costa Rica. Great location, Value for Price and one of the best, well stocked kitchens out of the dozens of hostels I visited in Costa Rica. Very helpful and friendly staff. Windows into our room had drapes that didn't block the lights from the lounge area, hard to have a dark room when it was time to sleep.
- Simon (8/5): Very good -
- Catherine (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sandra (5/5): Passable - It's hard to say.
I missed the people and company. It's more quiet and really hot. No trees around for shade the building etc.
In general I can say that they are nice people but one experience really made me not feel go and still bothering me.
There are two sisters to run the hostels
With one I organized that my clothes get washed. As she told me the cost will be how much it weighs, I put 2 pairs of shoes to the cleaning.
As I picked the clothes up, the sister were there and told me to pay 3000 colon more because of the shoes.
That's a no go. First not telling me and then have no problem to charge me more.
In total I payed 16 Dollar for a small handbag full of clothes.
Ridiculous.
The next day I left for my new destination and realized unfortunately in the new one that there is a top missing. Unfortunately my favorite one. So this experience was definitely not good.
Shower has just one slash of water coming out. Handavle but not comfortable.
In general they take care of the cleaning. The kitchen has everything you need to cook. When gas was empty she called immediately someone to change bottles.
- Marie-christine (10/5): Great stay! - Location was perfect, walking distance from restaurants, supermercado and Samara beach! Close to a bus stop to take you to Playa Carrillo. Staff was so nice and helpful. We appreciated the cold water from the fountain. Perfect stay!
- Ian (9/5): Superb - Owners obviously care about the place, and the cleanliness and the kitchen was particularly well outfitted with (gasp) knives that actually cut and pots and pans in good repair. Also really liked the fact that there are two common areas (living and dining) which made for good areas to socialize, depending on your speed.
- Miro (9/5): Superb - Great location.
- Alexis (9/5): Superb -
- Leanne (8/5): Great place for the price and in the heart of everything - This hostel is in the heart of Sámara, great location. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Nothing fancy just a good room for the price and can walk to everything. 7 minute walk to the beach. Grocery stores across the street and restaurants all around you. Go on the dolphin tour, for $50 US it was four hours long. We watched dolphins for over half and hour then we watched 8 humpbacks for about 35 to 40 mins, it was amazing!!!!! I wish they had hooks in the rooms to hang clothes or towels!!!
- Niehaus (9/5): Superb - It was extremely clean and well equipped and the owner is very nice! The prices were fair and everyone is calm and friendly. The rooms were nice and the AC works perfectly. We would come back for sure!
- Jon (8/5): Very good -
- Hana (10/5): Honestly this place was our favourite hostel of all the hostels my group has stayed at during 3 weeks in Costa Rica! I c - The kitchen: fully equipped and so clean.
The location: a 5 minute walk from the beach, in the absolute centre of the town, surrounded by restaurants.
The room: amazing, clean, spacious (as much as a hostel room can be) and so comfortable!
The people: so amazingly kind and helpful. Literally nothing!
- Chandragiri (8/5): Very good -
- Charity (10/5): I had a lovely stay! - Staff was super helpful and always going above and beyond. The location was prime. Very clean. Super comfy bed. Big kitchen to share. Nothing comes to mind.
- Ray (9/5): Super Value, pleasantly surprised - Amazing location, accross from everythin including great beach, Kitchen super equiped, ample room to eat, rooms are clean and quiet, reception and staff very friendly and helpful. No Parking if you have a car, but you can find places to park along roads
- Julian (9/5): Superb -
- Evelyne (10/5): Exceptional -
- Paulo (9/5): Superb - The staff was very helpful and friendly. Great location large clean community kitchen. We will be back.
- Oakley (10/5): I’m coming back - A/c is very cold, perfect location right in town a 1mjn walk to the beach, very clean, and the hammocks on the balcony are awesome
- Sebastien (10/5): Exceptional - Excellent location. Super friendly staff. Very clean. Highly recommended. My second time here in 2 years.
- Clare (10/5): Exceptional - Perfect backpackers.
Central location.
Super friendly owner / staff.
Best equipped kitchen of any hostel I've stayed in.
Comfortable rooms.
Lots of space outside rooms with tables and hammocks.
Supermarket 2 mins away.
Beach 2 mins away.
We loved our stay here.
Mum + 2 teens. Cold shower 🤣. Although not the end of the world when it's 36C.
- Luisa (7/5): Good - It was very clean and comfortable. It was very noisy. You can hear everything from the outside as there’s not a proper door. There’s a bar restaurant next door that you can see from the hostel. Basically I couldn’t go to sleep until 3am in the morning when the people outside stopped talking.
- Astha_garg (9/5): Superb location! - Very nice location. Close to the bus stand, and close to the beach. Many restaurants and supermarkets are nearby.
The shared kitchen is nice, and has most of the essentials. The lady at the reception was very sweet and helpful. The bed was very creaky. There was noise every time we took a turn. Rest, all good!
- David (10/5): Morning swim, late breakfast, late swim, late dinner, repeat! - Annie and her large number of sisters went out of her way to make us feel at home. Even accommodating us to stay an unplanned extra night in the same room. Everything was as shown on the site and the big washing lines for drying clothes were an extra bonus. Nothing off note.
- Bradnm (7/5): Good -
- Johanna (8/5): Very good - Good value for money. The kitchen was very clean and I got a room for myself for little money. There was no way to get some air circulation. I could only open the door to get some air from outside. Also the whole building was really heated up, so the AC was running a lot, which I usually don't like that much.
- Duforest (8/5): Very good -
- Leonie (10/5): Exceptional - we stayed in the private room and everything was great! kitchen was well equipped, staff super helpful and location very central (3 minutes to the beach)
- Tonya (5/5): Passable - Sweetest receptionist with her little helper (daughter) who was so very kind and helpful. Specifically, our rooms has a very bad carpenter ant issue. All night getting crawled on and several other bug bites.
- Ron (6/5): Pleasant -
- Silver (7/5): good hostel, would be great if it had AC at night - great location, super close to the beach and supermarkets etc.
the staff were so lovely, especially the lady at reception in the day she was so kind and so helpful!
the kitchen had lots of pots/pans/utensils etc there’s no AC in the dorms. the rooms were so unbelievably hot, there were two fans in the room but they just circulated the hot air.
we were asked to keep the dorm doors open for covid reasons (not had that anywhere else in CR) which is fine but there should be a lock on the mosquito mesh door because anyone can just walk from the street right into the dorm rooms in the day
the fridge was broken for the first few days I was there but did get fixed on the fourth day.
- Madeleine (8/5): Very good - Good location for goods and services
Well equipped and organized kitchen
Very friendly and helpful staff A little noisy
Thin walls
Not as much privacy as one could wish
- Elizabeth (7/5): Good -
- Dafna (8/5): Very good -
- Kelsey (8/5): Very good -
- Thomas (9/5): Superb - Awesome common areas! Great kitchen, cool view. Met some amazing people here! Wonderful staff! Room was very hot, but 2 fans were nice
- Barbara (6/5): Nice hostel - in the center and close to the beach. Confortable kitchen. Nice wire to hang clothes and tables to eat Little traffic because on one of the main Road. Only cold water and when you are not well, you Wish to have a warmer shower. Private room Is nice but hardly fit sitting on the wc because too narrow.
- Jeff (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sebastian (5/5): This was fine for a one night stay, but I would not return. - The location was nice excellent and the staff were lovely to interact with. The mattresses were ver uncomfortable, the AC did not work very well and the electrical outlets for the double bed in the room were placed right where your pillow/head rests making it very uncomfortable. But the worst was the tiny bathroom- I am a taller guy (~192cm) and I could not sit down on the toilet without my knees touching the opposite wall). The bathroom was much smaller than it appears on the photos. My last gripe was the cash-only policy, although it is my fault I didn’t notice it while booking I don’t understand the policy when cards are accepted almost everywhere in CR.
- George (8/5): Great, chilled hostel with perfect location. - Perfect location, big chill out area. Friendly staff, comfy bed. clean bedding. Dorm was too cramped and way too many people in a small space. lockers right next to bed so very loud when people are in and out and your trying to sleep. only one shower and one toilet together between 8 people which proved a problem a few times. I needed to use restrooms in the restaurant next door when I was dying for a wee!
- Justine (9/5): Superb - Very helpful reception lady! Very close to the beach and restaurants! Clean. Bit noisy with sounds from the street.
- Adir (9/5): Beach, chilling and good food - The owners are the best.
They helped me with every question that I asked. Nada
- Dale (10/5): Really memorable location and beautiful tree house - Great breakfast. Nice to go to bed and hear the waves as you fall asleep. Amazing view of the beach. Nothing we didnt like
- Massimo (7/5): Good -
- Javier (10/5): Exceptional -
