Guest Reviews
- Roland (1/5): - I booked this property to stay the weekend 27th till 29th of march.we drove down from Scotland only to be told we would have to find alternative accomodation at our own extra cost as the property had Bern double booked. Bearing in mind I booked and paid for this accomodation on the 3rd of March.. treated terribly by booking .com.will never book with them again.absolutely disgusted
- Michelle (9/5): Beautiful apartment value for money. - Beautiful apartment in an excellent location close to all amenities the owner was friendly and helpful and told me to message if there were any problems at all which there wasn't we really enjoyed our stay and would definitely stay again. The sliding toilet door was a bit tricky to use at first but we soon got the hang of it.
- Sarah (10/5): Had a great stay with my partner and 2 children, they both loved it. Very welcoming! Very close to shops, beach , park , - Great location, fab decoration, lovely and spacious , clean and tidy Tv was hard to get the hang of
No hot water in bathroom sink
- Vicki (1/5): BEWARE - OWNER DENIED MY BOOKING EXISTED ON BOOKING.COM AND THEN LIED ABOUT IT - NOTHING I made a booking in January for a Saturday night stay in September for the Great North Run weekend. I received confirmation from Booking.com, email confirmation, paid for it, messaged the owner about parking and received a reply.
On arrival, another family had already booked in. They said they had originally booked for the Sunday night, told Saturday night was unavailable but the owner Nicole rang them earlier that day to say they could now stay.
I rang the owner who said she had no record of my booking and it was all Booking.com's fault, and I had to ring them.
After ringing Booking.com, they looked into it and I received an email 45 minutes later to say The Bunkhouse was no longer available because........ no explanation at all! We tried to ring the owner Nicole twice and she did not answer.
We were then stuck in South Shields on Great North Run weekend at 8pm with nowhere to stay. Nobody offered any help. Nicole was quite aware of this and refused to answer the phone to explain what had happened.
We did find somewhere 25 minutes away that cost more and arrived at 9pm.
The whole weekend was very stressful. My 17 year old's son first GNR race and the first time we had been away since last year and was ruined by Nicole.
Having spoke to Booking.com since, they confirmed they had tried to ring her on the Saturday night and had no response. They have emailed 3 times since then with no response.
So in summary, you can book at the Bunkhouse, but when you get there, Nicole may have booked it out to someone else.
I do not believe she had no record of my booking. After the initial phonecall, she refused to answer the phone. If it been Booking.com's fault, then why is she refusing to speak to anyone. The Bunkhouse has been reported and an investigation is taking place with possibly removal from Booking.com or a fine.
Absolutely disgusting behaviour.
After reading the reviews about poor plumbing, toilet issues and the damp smell, I am happy I never stayed there.
- Gemma (8/5): - Location
- Michelle (8/5): No regrets š - Based ourselves here for 3 nights. Great location minutes from the sea front. Received clear check in instructions by text including how to use heating and TV. Lounge and bedroom generous in size and bed really comfy. Heating worked with no issues. Only used the TV in the bedroom, and that was for streaming- again, no issues. I felt safe and secure throughout the stay and the large T-Pot was a massive tick in my box. Some reviews mentioned problems with the bathroom door- it's a sliding door on rollers that need some work, and whilst it might take getting used to, by the end of the first night we had the technique nailed and had no problem. With parking permits included, The Bunkhouse has a lot going for it. The Bunkhouse just needs a bit of TLC and, in the hands of a skilled tradesman for a week or so, it could be an exceptional little bolt hole.
- Lisa (6/5): Did the job for a short stay - Location Shabby workmanship hob coming out of the counter top. Bathroom door hard to close. Just needs some maintenance
- Richard (1/5): - Great location on the surface looks fabulous Checked in heating didn't come on until we contacted host and no instructions until we pressed green button on boiler shower toilet door wouldn't shut needed attention and is located right opposite the fridge not ideal location. T.V.s both wouldn't load any channels light in lounge not working extension cables for tv appliances stuck behind tvs bit of a hazard very noisy from flat above us heard shouting not gud.and we phoned text host to speak but was unavailable as she was in a meeting on a Saturday at 3pm apparently left message said she would phone as soon as meeting finished but no phone call. But we did get a rather disappointing long text as we said we were leaving and wanted a refund that response was i am glad your leaving and you won't get a refund so I strongly advise to stay away.
- Linda (10/5): - Loved it Will go again and again Can't Fault the property
- Malcolm (8/5): We enjoyed staying at the bunkhouse, it suited our needs very well. - The property was spacious and comfortable, well located, and dog freindly. A coat rack or similar near the front door would be helpful if the cloak cupboard is to be kept locked.
The information pack is out of date in some respects, and there are no instructions for how to turn the heating on/off.
- Julie (9/5): Photos did not do the property justice. Some amendments need attention. More usb ports would helpful - Breakfast not provided. There were sachets of porridge in the cupboard. Bathroom door either stuck or came off altogether. Also, the back door was unable to open; indeed the handle fell off. This could be an extra exit in case of a fire. The front door should not be reliant on a key to lock inside, it should be a flick lock. Again, not safe in case of fire. No outside light, necessary on a dark night.
- Renata (10/5): - Super clean. Perfect location
- Butler (9/5): The stay was excellent -
- Douglas (6/5): Enjoyable and comfortable stay - Location and position of property is lovely and easy for views, walks and restaurants. Sofa bed was a little hard and place smelt a little musty on arrival, perhaps because itās a basement. Windows left open would help.
- Hunt (8/5): -
- Emmerson (10/5): - Absolutely loved the bunkhouse beautiful all round ā¤ļø was very easy to get to destinations from the bunkhouse, bed was comfy loved the fact I was able to cook meals and wash clothes I would definitely recommend this stay to others , the host is fantastic š always kept in touch always asked how we were if I had any questions they were answered all round 10 out of 10
- Evelyn (10/5): - The bunkhouse looked exactly like the pictures. It was beautiful and unique. It's close to everything you need, including a well equipped park right across the street for children
- n (1/5): Don't stay here - it's filthy, bare electrics exposed on wall so could not use the bedroom dangerous.none of the tvs work.awful smell.freezing cold even in summer. Air fryer .don't even look inside the decor... well it looks like a brothel.guve it a wide berth Didn't like anything.just awful
- Liam (1/5): -
- Richard (7/5): Medical get away - I had just got out of hospital and needed somewhere quiet to rest a bit. It fitted this request and was all 1 level making it easy to get around on crutches. And free Netflix was on both tellys. There was only an air fryer instead of an oven. And back door wasn't locked on arrival. The key does not seem to work so can only be locked by a bolt from yhe inside. Though I'm sure my dog would have seen off any unwanted guests. And ghe flat smelled a bit damp on arrival. So that needs sorted. Overall value for money.
- Kirsty (8/5): Very good -
- Kelly (10/5): We enjoyed our over night stay and will definitely book again - Great price great location for familyās right opposite the park, it was nice and clean and itās a well equipped.
Had a problem getting in wrong key code was sent but it was swiftly sorted out
- Nicola (10/5): Exceptional -
- Gordon (8/5): Very good - Lovely living area and bedroom. No hot water in bathroom and couldnāt flush away in toilet had to use kettle.
- Joanna (2/5): Should be condemned until all plumbing, back and front doors and other issues sorted out. - Location to beach
Bed comfortable Plumbing has been broken for a while, shower overflowed, loo wouldn't flush, kitchen taps aquirting water from around taps, we had to leave day 2 as couldn't shower. Back door broken, fire hazard, front door sticks and very hard to get in. Smelly plugins to mask damp smell, debris everywhere, wallpaper coming off, no freezer. It shouldn't be open and told drug users next door.
Bathroom tiny and light and fan come on when in kitchen, which Bathroom is in open kitchen!
- Obasuyi (10/5): Exceptional -
- Mchale (9/5): Superb -
- Sally (6/5): Pictures online definitely not very recent, quite a tired looking flat.Clean enough and good location - Great location, short walk to shops etc. lovely parks right across the road. Easy instructions for access. Helpful folder with local information. Parking right outside door (using tickets left in flat for us to use). Dark basement flat, only one set towels given despite being a booking for two people, and no hand towel for shower room or mat for floor (which was definitely needed as floor got quite wet when using shower). Outside space was a shared space with other flats. No airer/clothes horse for drying clothes.
- Nadine (1/5): Never again - The location was good The main bedroom needed a deep clean (dust on skirting boards). There was food debris under the sofa bed in the living room. The upstairs neighbours were making so much noise. My husband went to see what was going on, it looked as though someone was running up and down in their flat. No exaggeration, we thought the ceiling would come through. We were totally unable to relax. Also the bed sofa provided in the front room was rock solid. My daughter had to share the main bedroom with me and my husband slept in the settee. Not exactly what Iād expect for that money. I wish weād booked a proper hotel. The outside of the property left a lot to be desired also. Surely a spruce up would improve guests first impressions.
- Gemma (10/5): Perfect stay - Close to all amenities perfect with little ones
- Katy (10/5): Absolutely wonderful stay will definitely be back - We loved the space and the quirky design and decor Some of the lamps didnāt work no bulbs would of been nice to put lamp on in living room in evening and fire
- Louise (1/5): Worst overnight stay ever - Horrendous experience- we didnāt receive the PIN code or any information prior to arriving - rang several times to eventually get the PIN code to gain access. The entrance down to the basement apartment was strewn with litter and broken glass - once in side was very cold - we rang the host again and she proceeded to tell us she dosent leave it on as she had a 3K bill - we turned the boiler on and looked around - there were no towels - so rang again and she said there would be some - I hunted around the apartment but there were none - no hand towels or shower mat - she offered to go and buy some and bring them out - but also told me she would have to get her 4 children in their dressing gowns to do this - I found a clean dog towel in my car and said we would manage with that as didnāt want her dragging her children out at night . The bed was covering in a throw and lots of cushions - once removed we noticed that they were covering very crumpled bedding ( never seen an iron ) and it was quite smelly . Not sure if the bedding was clean or not ? The Kitchen tap had a serious leak - which my partner fixed so it was useable . The bin in the bathroom was full of soiled sanitary waste and the sink had lots of black bits in it . The washing machine had wet washing in it . If we hadnāt been so exhausted we would have just left and gone home - really bad experience and since getting back the owner has been very unhelpful and just keeps blaming the cleaner . If you expect basic hygiene and any towels in an apartment this is not the place to stay .
- Stewart (9/5): Superb - The apartment was excellently liocated for the resturants in South Shields. The information folder was useful - we particularly enjoyed a trip to Marsden Grotto as recommended in the folder. The keysafe entry meant no pressure to arrive at any specific time so it was a bit annoying that booking.com (rather than the host) wanted us to specify a 1 hour time slot for our arrival. As it happened, it was dark when we arrived and the only improvement I could suggest would be a proximity sensor activated light to make it easier to read the numbers on the keysafe and get the key in the lock.
Decor was interesting and some source of amusement for our group of 4 guys. We tried to think of a phrase to describe it and came up with "Hen night B&M chic"
- Stuart (5/5): Passable -
- Jeff (10/5): Totally over the moon - Great location with excellent access to many high quality restaurants
- Colin (9/5): Superb - Quirky, clean, lovely.
- Chris (8/5): Very good -
- Angela (7/5): Good - I really loved the quirkiness, and the location was excellent. It was only a short walk into the town centre, the local restaurants and the beach. Just needs a little tlc, to freshen up the accommodation.
- Anna (9/5): Great fantastic would recommend to any one - Was lovely and clean also was different and quirky loved the lay out nice and spaces the owner went above and beyond so did cleaner leaving snacks and toys for children and lil bottles of wine for grown ups š The toilet with been bottom basement apartment the loo not flush properly
- Julie (8/5): Lovely place, weād stay again. - The decor was great. Lots of space in bedroom and living room. The kitchen and bathroom met our needs. Everything was clean. Parking was no bother. The steps to front door were a little tricky. We were a bit concerned about the toilet not having a strong flush.
- Kelly (10/5): Will definitely stay again - It was very comfortable and quirky. Communication and friendliness was fantastic. Welcome food bits were above and beyond.
- Robert (10/5): Exceptional -
- Natalia (10/5): Exceptional - The house was large and very comfortable for the children and us.Very good location, everything was close to the city and the beach. We will definitely come back because my children liked it very much. Before entering the house there was a hole in the stairs, it was difficult to go down. The shower with toilet was not comfortable, it was too small and the door was difficult to open. It was full of cobwebs and not cleaned well.
- Danielle (7/5): Good - The box with juice n crisps n nuts nice little touch u are near the beach n shops and there was every thing u need in the apartment u even got milk n juice iron all was missing was a hair dryer Noise from up stairs till earlie hours kids running about loads of noise the toilet for most of nite on first n second nite making noise behind the box in kitchen but apart from that it was nice could do with a fresh paint in passage n when fist entered it smells of damp n foist but u get used to the smell after a while
- Yewtree02 (8/5): Lovely flat. Very spacious and plenty of equipment - Lovely big rooms. Plenty of kitchen equipment Toilet and shower room were too small and the door was awful
- Susie (10/5): Great stay, great location, great value for money. Thank my friend and 2 boys from Leicester loved it and it has made a - Excellent location, roomy, great communication and information from host about the key and parking, lovely interior, value for money and lovely touch with the welcome tray of goodies š
- Cook (7/5): Comfortable, spacious & right by the beach. - Comfortable. Bathroom directly off kitchen space. Electrical light switch plate loose in hall.
- Caroline (9/5): Great decor, good price for what you get. - Great location, spacious and lovely welcome basket The floors
- Sara (2/5): Not good! - I loved the location! And the little welcome gifts were a nice touch It needs a good clean, facilities need updating, the shower was rubbish, the toilet I was scared every time I used it. Very dark but it is in the basement.
- Irene (2/5): Never again - Its in a nice neighborhood, nice walking distance to a few activities and the beach. First thing when we open the door is the smell. Smell of humidity, of a place that has not been properly ventilated in quite some time. Sure, it's a basement, but if its made in a place to rent, it should have proper ventilation. Smell is bad.
And there is no heating to try to warm up, nothing turns on. It was set at 32 š³ but it was so cold. And did i mention humid?
Then you touch the floor. It feels as if you have been frying chips all over the place. The tiles, the mat, it is so greasy, its impossible to walk barefoot or even in socks. Forget putting my 9 month old on the floor.
The beds... oh the beds... If you weigh like 30 kilos you might just might be ok in the normal bed. But the sofa bed in the living room, the matress is so thin you can feel every spring of the bed digging in your body all night long.
The bathroom is tiny with a door that leaves gaps for all to enjoy sight and smell. We are gently asked with a poem to only flush pee, poo and toilet paper but even with just pee and toilet paper the flush is so slow nothing gets flushed away.
The photos look so nice, the decoration is funky, amusing, but if less money was used in doing mats, candles, frames and so on with the name of the place on it, and using that money to actually make the place less of a dump, it could actually be a nice place to stay.
- Moira (9/5): Superb - All of it. Thereās nothing to complain about. Only issue is a parking fine on the morning of departure despite parking ticket being displayed and parking in the right parking area. Instructions need to be much clearer. Nothing apart from parking issues which made it an expensive stay.
- Sherri-leigh (10/5): Lovely apartment and spot on location - The layout was beautiful. It was very well decorated and very comfy.. location was fab.. they left us alil welcome gift and it was lush. Can't wait to stay again.
- Carla (7/5): Good -
- Nicola (6/5): Pleasant - Fantastic location, querky deco but in need of a revamp throughout. cobwebs in lounge low sofa with ripped cushions and stains, bathroom a joke in kitchen door bi fold didnt shut probably plumbing nightmare basic needs not met ie toilet flush . Requires a total revamp
- Emma (7/5): Great stay in this large basement apartment - Lovely spacious and comfy apartment. Excellent location. Loved the touch of the welcome pack on arrival. Plenty of plates, cutlery and cups. Nice touch of having cleaning products available to use. And in the bathroom having soap, shower gel and shampoo available. Given the apartment was well stocked with extras, as mentioned in positives. We did have the surprise of having no toilet roll. Guess was just over looked. Apartment was clean. But suggest a little more dusting is needed in the bedroom corners and the bedside lamps didn't work and were very dusty. Didn't affect our stay and would recommend this apartment.
- Jordana (10/5): Amazing Attention to Detail! - This is the cutest place weāve stayed in a long time! So much thought went into the details of this place. The host was amazing with communication and the welcome gift was great! I would highly recommend this location for a holiday!
- Valerie (9/5): Superb -
- Amanda (8/5): Perfect location and overall a great couple of days - Location was perfect and having parking included and right out side the front door was an added bonus. Loved the decor, very spacious apartment and there was a lovely welcome pack of wine and snacks which was a nice touch. Problem with the shower drainage and also issue getting the sofa bed in and out but these didnāt cause too much of an issue as we were only there two nights. Also couldnāt find a sheet to make up the sofa bed so had to use a duvet cover instead.
- Emma (10/5): fabulous stay, great location and loved the quirky decor - the location was amazing!
- Kirsty (10/5): Exceptional -
- Casey (9/5): Perfect - Beautiful accommodation while still being practical and perfect for little ones. Absolutely loved the decor, the little touches, the location was amazing too. Would definitely stay again.

- Leanne (9/5): Superb - Perfect location and lovely property Location
- Charlene (10/5): Exceptional - The apartment was homely and very spacious and very clean. I went with my 11 year old daughter and her friend. We had an amazing time. The girls had the bedroom and I chilled on an evening in the lounge with a few glasses of vino enjoying some mommy time after days on the beach! Will definitely recommend and come again. The owner is amazing and very helpful. Xxx Nothing xxx
- Michelle (8/5): We still had a fab time , kids loved it - I loved the decor ! Gives love Island vibes and the location was fab , loved the lay out of the property also We could not get the sofa bed out it was totally stuck and the duvet was under the sofa bed so could not get to it ! We had to sleep 4 in the double bed which was not ideal . We didnāt realise that there was another sofa bed in bedroom . We couldnāt get the tv to work in the front room ! I think it might just be the batteryās s in the remote and there was no hot water in the kitchen tap or bathroom sink but the shower was nice and hot .
- Seymour (10/5): Exceptional - The place is amazing...Great decor, nice big rooms and tvs. Couldn't ask for anything more.
- Stella (7/5): Quirky apartment, very good location - Location and facilities Sofa bed very hard to take out . Parking - used permit but got a parking ticket the next day!
- Darren (7/5): Good - Perfect distance from beach and restaurants. Place was very clean and value for money. We stayed to attend concert at the Stadium of Light. Owner left a little arrival gift which was an lovely. Plumbing was a little quirky due to little or no water pressure.
- Anita (9/5): Fabulously well equipped apartment - Great sized rooms with fabulous decor & finishing touches. Wish we couldāve stayed longer. Toilet was a bit temperamental!

- Joanne (7/5): With a few changes, this place could be so much better. - Excellent location, comfy bed, lovely welcome pack. Needed a good clean, warm fridge, bathroom light on timer so often plunged into darkness, only 1 TV could be watched.
- Greaves (10/5): Exceptional -
- Linda (6/5): Pleasant - Location, instructions, clean, bedding, towels. Toilet door, very noisy above and outside during the night, would have preferred some coffee sachets rather than wine.
- Hannah (10/5): Amazing all round! - Amazing location. Super friendly and helpful host. Gorgeous place to stay. Everything we could want and need. Just brilliant all round! That we couldn't stay longer! Honestly, nothing. Couldn't have asked for anything more.
- Laura (10/5): Exceptional - Spacious accommodation, with lovely decor, which gave it a homely feel.
Di was great and very helpful, nothing was too much trouble.
Thanks for a lovely stay!
- Joanne (8/5): Very good -
- Hannah (9/5): Really nice place for a girls weekend in a good location! - Really nicely decorated and was plenty of space for everyone. The property would easily sleep 6 people! Good location for getting to the beach and into town. Owner was friendly when contacted. Alexa provided so we could connect and play music. No oven at the property but says fully equipped kitchen online. TV in lounge - the colour was off so everyone was a bit blue.
- Nikki (9/5): Cannot wait to stay again in the future! - I loved the quirky deco and the homely feeling we got when we stayed there. Di was so helpful and only at the other end of the phone for any queries we might of had. We cannot wait to go back! Nothing we loved everything!
- Grant (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jamie (10/5): Great stay - Host is very lovely and kind, lovely homey feel to the place, and a nice added special touch in the form of a welcome basket. Fantastic if you have a baby - travel cot, high chair and a baby bath supplied as well as baby cutlery and plates etc. Full sized toiletries were also provided. 2 large sized tvs in living room and bedroom to watch. Fully kitted out kitchen, even down to an air fryer. The apartment was very spacious, clean, tidy and newly done out. Even had a Christmas tree to add that little bit of an extra personal touch! Definitely thought of everything to make our stay stress free. Will be booking again in future.
