Guest Reviews
- Stephen (10/5): Exceptional - The place was comfortable an clean very pleasant stay Everything was good
- James (9/5): Superb -
- Lirio (3/5): Poor -
- Михайло (6/5): Pleasant -
- Connaughton (3/5): No good, cancelled after 1 night - There was no coffee or tea or milk, no cups or cooking equipment in the kitchen, Plastic sheeting stuck over windows , Foyer had musky smell , toilet wouldn't flush, shower wouldn't run if someone else running water , toaster tripped safety switch for lights n power in the room,
- Retini (8/5): Enjoyable and very affordable. - Friendly welcome. Liz was very helpful. A bit cold at night. Extra blanket would have been helpful.
- Juliewest888 (5/5): Passable -
- Marina (2/5): Very poor -
- Michal (7/5): Was about what I expected for the discount price - Location and price Cold and needs some tlc
- Jiang (6/5): The location is prefect. The house has a smell and no flesh air. It's hard to reach the staff. - The location is really convenience and it is a quiet area. The windows can't be opened. And the toilet and sunk are in different rooms. It's hard to meet with staff or housekeeper.
- Simon (5/5): Passable -
- Tori (8/5): Charming and Friendly - I love an old haunted house I liked most things, some parts of the house are rundown. But it's 120 years old so keep that in mind.
- Stephen (3/5): Good value for money, questionable experience - Good location, nice bedroom and bathroom for the most part.
Decent kitchen, large fridge
Beautiful house entirely throughout, other tenants were delightful to speak to also Upon arrival, I did not realise the house was the same one I had booked until I actually walked up to the front door. The photos used to advertise the house must be about 10+ years old because of how overgrown the garden is. This isn't a major detractor but just something to be aware of, I did not like that the photos used were old. I do like the overgrown garden for its privacy in my own opinion
Immediately upon entering the house there was a noticeable odour of some kind in the hallway, there was no one there to greet me or explain anything which in a way was ok I suppose.
In my room all along the window cills there was numerous dead insects and on the lintel above the closet door, there was a mousetrap underneath the bed (I did not check if there was any dead mice), on the carpet floor there was a huge black stain of some kind made previously, in the closet there was a foul smell also so I kept that door closed the whole time I was there and never used it.
I found a living spider and ladybird also in my bedroom which I released into the garden.
Only 1 window in the room opened out of the 2 I had, I believe the window handles were broke for the most part also. Some of the Venetian blinds were bent out of shape but still functioned so generally fine
In the kitchen there was very little cutlery or delf so was not really able to cook or prepare any meals.
In the envelope which contained the key to my room, it contained a separate type of agreement/contract that I was expected to sign and provide all details on in case there was any issues.
I was not informed of there being any "second" terms and conditions attached with staying at this property and I absolutely did not sign this document as my booking confirmation, agreement and details were all through booking.com.
- Marco (5/5): Passable -
- Crawford (6/5): Enjoyed Vancouver - Easy to get to public transport Lack of information regarding what you have to offer and more information on what can be seen and done in the area, plus information on what transport is available .
- William (7/5): treetop views. - rooftop views. Beautiful yard. quiet and comfortable.
- Amy (5/5): Great location, rooms could use some cleaning and instructions could me clarified. - The location was good, the bed was comfortable and the kitchenette was nice. The price was good for the area it was located in and it was close to bus stops for easy travel. They were also very accommodating of my late check in request. When I entered the room it was immediately clear that the carpets need a good cleaning and the smell of the room reflected that. As I had a late check in, I was instructed to leave the appropriate signed paperwork in a box by the television that did not exist. Additionally, as requested by the property, during checkout I tried to make contact with someone to settle my bill and could not find anyone around. Overall, instructions were difficult to follow. Not at the fault of the property, but the guest in the room adjacent to mine was very loud at all hours of the day and night making it difficult to sleep or relax.
- Robert (5/5): Passable - location was excellent for my purposes. price and location were good, but you could invest in some new pillows.
- Choi (9/5): Superb - Quietness and good location
- Jessica (1/5): Will never be going back and will be contacting the property to ask for a refund and an explanation. - It was in a safe community Carpets were disgusting had stains and dirt all over them never have been washed including the shag rug outside the shower. It smelt really moldy. Made us feel like we were going to get diseases, bed bugs, or badly sick. No fire alarm. They need to clean up this place or not let people stay in it because there are many legal issues here. We had to leave and not finish our full stay because we felt like we were getting bed bugs. I have pictures of how disgusting it was for proof. I would like my money back because yes it is a good price $450 for 3 nights but you deserve at the least to feel like it’s a sanitary place to sleep.
- Sharon (5/5): It was a neat old house and me and my son enjoyed our time there. - I liked the old charm of the house. Beautiful neighbourhood but not many stores close by. The rooftop patio was neat. Wifi was great. The bathroom was pretty dirty, there weren’t simple comforts in the kitchen like salt and pepper/ condiments. It took about a month to get the security deposit sent back.
- Mariana (1/5): Bad - Terrible place. I do not recommend it to anyone. We paid for three nights. And we only spent a few hours there. We arrived around 12 pm and by 6 am we were not there. It stinks so much that it is impossible to stay there.
- Yuan (10/5): Exceptional - Amazing location, very clean, very quiet. Rarely saw or heard anyone. Bed frame was squeaky. A little annoying at night but not a huge issue.
- Mi (6/5): We wish our stay could have been better if some improvements on the facility were made. - It’s located in a good area and not far from downtown Vancouver. There’s no room cleaning, towel and linen changing, nor shampoo being provided. The closest was unclean and had a bad odor.
- Lauran (2/5): Dirty - would not stay again - The hotel is located approximately 10 minutes (driving) from Main Street and 15 from down town. Street parking was available near the hotel. The hotel was very dirty. Stained carpets, dirty bedspread, hair on the floor/in the shower of the bathroom. Our room had a kitchenette & the counter was greasy. The towels had a mildew odor. The rooms were not well sound proofed. I understand this property is historic, but simple improvements like cleaning the carpets & replacing linens would make this room worth the price.
- Christy (4/5): Bed is not the greatest sheets were very poor quality. Pillows were nice. Not very secure - Room was large Whomever cleaned the room missed a bunch of garbage underneath the beds and some sort of muck near the Bedside table on the floor
- Jessica (1/5): A complete dump and a disgrace to a beautiful old house - The neighborhood The trees
- Stacey (4/5): Run Down Cash Cow- - Room size was good
The paint work was good.
Nice outlook over garden
Located in a nice street
Transport was near by. Our room had a horrendous smell in the walk in cupboard.
Only 1 window would open. The others were painted shut.
To manage the odour we had the bathroom exhaust fan on and window open for our entire stay.
The building was in desperate need of maintenance.
The kitchen area was filthy dirty.
No windows were open in the common areas, so the air was also very stale.
The garden desperately needs a gardener to trim plants, mow lawn etc general clean.
We arrived and had to work with the cleaner (she was nice, but these issues were beyond her control in my assessment)
- Avalon (8/5): Great value for a short jaunt to downtown. Early check in to drop off bags was so helpful! -
- Keith (3/5): Location was only good point - Location was ideal for visiting our Dad. Toiletries consisted of two tiny bars of soap (the size of a loonie), 2 small towels, 2 tiny towels. Room description said hair dryer in room but could not find one. Carpets are EXTREMELY dirty and soiled. Refrigerator in room not working well. There's a stove but no pots or pans, random utensils (ice cream scoop, serving ladel) but no forks, knives or spoons, plates or cups. Bedroom window could open but had no screen, so bees flew in, and theres no air conditioning so it would have been nice to have the window open. Sheets too narrow and far too short (although clean). Mattress sagged in middle. Bathroom window had mould on it. We had to "steal" toilet paper from a shared bathroom as we ran out and no one available to get any from. The whole house smells terrible. No one available in house to speak to, and no one answered phone.
- Louise (6/5): It is okay for young people. When I might next go to Vancouver, at 75+ years I will need an elevator - I did not get a breakfast. The location was close to businesses that I use in my hometown of Edmonton: the Royal Bank of Canada and Safeway. There were several buses close-by. I liked having various things available in the kitchen. Lack of lighting outside my room 2-1. I had to put on the light in the bathroom to see coming up the stairs and to see the lock on my door. When I returned from my family event in the evening of Saturday, August 10, 2024, there was no electricity in my room. It was dark in my room. I would appreciate a handrail maybe in the middle of the front cement steps.
- Kane (6/5): It was a place to hang my hat. Only thing reasonable in Vancouver. It’s absurd - Ease of entry. Nice neighbourhood. Walkable to shops and transit. Wasn’t clean, was very hot in rooms, bulbs missing, switches didn’t work. People cook where we’re not supposed to, no light outside of door. It’s a Wild West of an “Inn. Feels like some friends bought it as a money making stopgap until they can find the right buyer. Also Felt like I was having a sleepover at my grandparents place who are too old to take care of their stuff and I don’t want to be there but I have to.
- Mark (5/5): Passable - All of the bathrooms ran out of TP. The bathtub in the one bathroom looked like it was from a frat house and had never been leaned.
- Davide (8/5): Very good - Very quiet neighborhood
Close to bus stop and in 15-20 minutes you are downtown not paying the center very high prices
The owner not present but answering immediately to our request allowing delayed checkout The house is 100 years old and you see it
- Rarog (9/5): Family vacation went great - The character of the 100 year old house has been preserved wonderfully and felt like staying at a relative's home.
Lots of room and wonderful to be able to use the fridge, appliances and table wear to eat. Lovely little room with tables to eat.
Nice and close to transport and stores. Staff was friendly as were the other people we met.
The price was affordable and what our other family members paid for rentals(we came for a wedding) was amazing. If appreciate how things used to be then this place is for you.
There was no air conditioning which we were fine with as we were using residence to sleep. We had a balcony where we opened the door at night and cooled off.
Sheets and towels were clean.
The location was quiet and parking was easy to find.
We were grateful for the experience. We are very simple people and were happy with our stay. The walkway was not lit up so at night you have to be careful walking back to the house and up stairs.
The outside area could be kept up a bit (deck by the kitchen table and chairs full of old leaves)
- Bolduc (10/5): Exceptional -
- Richard (4/5): Disappointing -
- Nanna (5/5): Passable - Very helpful staff
- Melany (7/5): Good - Location. Price. Clean. Quiet. The kitchen requires to be order and maybe assign slots in the refrigerator for hosts. Thanks
- Mackus (7/5): Bruce AAA Recommendation - Very comfortable, felt like home, I liked it very much There should be a locked drop box for the registration document as it has all the credit card details on it.
- Renee (5/5): The room was small, but we slept well & greatly appreciated the clean bathroom and wonderful shower. - The location was wonderful (and nice and quite) and the recently remodeled bathroom was nice. Communicated well with us on how to find our key and enter the building. We were happy to have a fan in the room, which kept the temperature comfortable. There was no mattress pad on the bed, and we never did meet any staff person. The bathroom was very clean but the closet was extremely musty smelling so we didn't use it at all. The carpet looked dirty....or perhaps was just stained in many places.
- Yaoli (5/5): Passable -
- Wai (7/5): Good -
- Mahya (1/5): too bad - we were there in the night, they didnt have the little light to find the door. it was so dark, i can not find the door in darkness. we were afraid. everywhere was dark like home in the horrible movie everything. it was so bad
- Camden (6/5): Pleasant -
- Alisher (1/5): This property should not be on booking. Almost a scam. Not sure if homeless people live there. - Very dirty. Unacceptably dirty.
- Vincent (5/5): Passable -
- Sadasivam (1/5): not good - no proper response for everything they keep on collecting money wast of my total money response and taking money unnecessarily
- Jesus (8/5): Very good -
- Анастасия (3/5): Poor - Good location We arrived at night and I felt like we had entered a house from a horror movie. The steps were steep and rickety, the door was hard to open and we smelled a very foul odor from the entrance. We struggled to get to our room, it was spacious and clean but had a foul odor. There was never any toilet paper in the toilet and no one cleaned it for 3 days. The bathroom was without a lock and we had to watch each other to make sure no one entered. The water cooler was empty and the water from the tap was impossible to drink.
The yard resembled an abandoned lot where no one has been keeping order for about 5 years, the photo is not true.
During the whole stay we did not see any of the staff. We went in and out by ourselves, and also left by ourselves, absolutely none of the staff was there.
This mansion is in a beautiful location, but it is in need of serious restoration.
My vacation was relatively ruined by not wanting to return to this house, unfortunately I did not feel comfortable or safe there....
- Matt (4/5): Price is about right for what you get - Location and price Cleanliness, poor upkeep, dingy old house
- Roberto (6/5): nice house, host's communication can improve - the room was spacious and clean, and quiet. it is located in a very peaceful neighborhood. Also, the rest of the house was clean, except for a pair of shoes at the entrance that look like they have been there since the egyptians communication with the host was super hard. We needed some answers for us to take decisions , but werent fulfilled. Also the mini fridge of our room was broken and couldnt be used.
- Karry (6/5): Pleasant -
- Adela (5/5): Needed better management - yes Management- Cleanness
- Priyanka (9/5): Superb -
- Aguer (5/5): Passable -
- Arthur (10/5): Exceptional -
- Paul (8/5): It was lovely to return once more, look forward to next time - Enjoyed staying in the neighbourhood, the bed, the house, the tv room, it was lovely.
- Lamont (2/5): Very poor - The building is very old and run down. Bathrooms were not very clean, no hot water or clean tea towels in kitchen. All towels looked dirty. No tea, coffee or shampoo. The bedside lamp didn't work.
- Marisa (1/5): The poop house - Nothing The place was a dump. It was an old dirty house with mice. As soon as we arrived we went to the bathroom and the toilet was dirty with poop. We left immediately.
- Brian (9/5): I want to stay here again, preferably in the Summer. It really is a gorgeous area. - This house is 124 years old and it shows, but not in a bad way. It's not a five star hotel but it has so much charm and character you can't help but appreciate it. You have to wonder how many people have stayed here over the decades. It's a beautiful house on a gorgeous street surrounded by stunning old homes with delicious restaurants half a block away. I felt completely safe parking my car on the street overnight. My room got lots of natural sunlight and was very, VERY quiet. My room didn't really have a closet, but this was not a big deal.
- Peyvand (3/5): Poor -
- Karen (5/5): Passable - Quiet neighborhood with nice homes. Very walkable area, away from the downtown.
- Orlando (7/5): Good -
- Richenda (3/5): Not surprisingly for an old rooming house with smells from 1904/ ok as it was cheap / owners more concerned abou - Outside lighting non existent
Need to replace front door lock
No bathroom lights working
No extra blankets as old heating system
Stayed one of 3 nights booked
Exceptional welcome from house staff however she’s on her way out
- Muneeb (8/5): Satisfied. Good property if you are not looking for luxuries - Reasonable and affordable in terms of price.
The place is like a guest house in an old 100 years old heritage site. Rooms were spacious and clean bathrooms. There is a common room and a kitchen. Its an old house. But my stay was comfortable
- Sophie (6/5): Pleasant - Location was good, and compared to other accommodations, not too expensive.
The room was big, which we liked.
Good for 3 people Too bad that the kitchen were not working !
Also, we think it smelled a bit bad inside the house and sometimes in our room. Must be the smell of the wood but it bothered us a bit.
- Lianne (7/5): Good - Location excellent.
- Robert (5/5): Quite an experience - Cool old house. Amazing roof top deck. Wasn’t clean. Kitchen is common and they seem to try to trick you with this.
Queen is 2 doubles pushed together.
- Maike (3/5): Poor - The cleaning lady was very friendly and it was one of the cheap places to book in Vancouver as well no zombies on the street there. Whole place smells old and rotten, towels smelled like wet dog, Doors aren't closing properly, bed is terrible uncomfortable. Literally everything would need some renovations.
- Summer (8/5): Great stay - Good location and very cool old house Walls were thin, and house itself was very cold
- Hussein (10/5): Exceptional -
- Mj (7/5): It was quiet and good location - The location is amazing, very nice neighborhood and near to bus stop. it's a very quiet place to stay, and the rooms are good size. There's no breakfast, kitchen wasn't working at the time.
The only thing didn't like is that after the second night, my room it started smell weird and I tried to communicate with the housekeeper but she never answered, also I couldn't really find staff there, I only see a staff person one day and that's it.
- Ragnvaldsen (5/5): It was close and inexpensive to medical facility. - It’s charm of the past. It was vey dirty. Clearly not cleaned regularly. 👎
- Grandison (2/5): Noisy tenants, unclean. - Beautiful house Was not clean, poor facilities, no staff available during the day.
- Pamela (6/5): Pleasant -
- Yannick (7/5): Lovely stay for midweek - Very nice old house, you get what you can expect from a house over a century old, but this also includes feeling like a lord from the olden days. Lovely atmosphere, hot showers, rooftop terrace. Toilet is loose
- Tzu-yi (2/5): Very poor -
- Olena (8/5): Very good -
- Maureen (9/5): Exciting experience! Close to public transit - Very unique and historical Getting up the stairs with my luggage I was hoping there would be someone to help me or I would have been on a lower level also my taxi driver had a hard time finding it and I was actually taken to the wrong house at midnight! I eventually went exploring and found the right house a couple of doors up so was thankful I had a bedroom! I had sent the taxi driver on her way!
- Anonymous (7/5): Good -
- Clinton (3/5): Poor - The location of the Balfour wasn’t terrible. The neighborhood is nice and there was a coffee shop close and a grocery store within a few blocks. The building and the room stunk like an old, damp trunk. My clothes started to smell like the whole building within a couple of days. The blinds for the windows were laying against the wall; the bed linens and towels weren’t white so you know that they have never been bleached; the carpets were disgusting; the mirror in the room was incredibly dusty; the bed and box spring were different sizes; there were 3 hangers in the room but one was tiny and couldn’t be used to hang clothes; screen for the window was ripped.
- Sheryl21 (5/5): Great location! - The room was very spacious but needed updating in a bad way. THe bed fell apart at night. Scary. The shower did not work. The management did try to fix it the next day though,
- Dorita (10/5): Exceptional -
- Maria (7/5): Good - Very convenient location , close to the bus stop and grocery store The smell of the room was so intense , cause is old house they need to open the windows ! We left all the time one small open window so after time the smell was gone but we didn’t use the closet cause we can handle the smell , the room has carpet they should leave a vacuum close by so we can clean as we stay 1 week and we needed more towels the phone they gave us in the paper to contact housekeeper wasn’t update .
- Abdulrahman (4/5): Disappointing - The room was big enough. Cold water for shower. It tales 10 minutes until a bit warm water comes from the tube. I explicitly asked for a change of towels after being in the hotel for 5 nights but they did not change it until i left at the 8th night. There is no one to talk to, everything is by messages. They took 50 dollars from my account extra without saying why, when i asked they said that they will give it back when i give back the keys. Very negative experience in general in addition to the smell of the place.
- Rachel (3/5): Uncomfortable, no breakfast, no toilet paper - There was no breakfast, but on the website it said there was a kitchen and breakfast. The rooftop patio was the only cool part There was no breakfast?? They don’t restock towels or toilet paper?? The oven didn’t turn on, the only thing in the kitchen that worked was the mini fridge, it’s said on the website we booked from that there was breakfast and we got there and there was none. The lady that showed us to our room didn’t even know we were coming, and it was very very dusty, the carpet in our room had stains all over. Not cleaned! Lots of cobwebs and a broken lamp in the hallway
- Diana (6/5): disappointing. - Location was great and the room and shared areas were very clean. No parking, had to park on the street which was a restricted 2 hour parking zone during the day and on Saturday. Was not supposed to flush anything including paper (toilet paper) down the toilet but the garbage was not emptied the entire time I was there nor was my room cleaned. There was a small kitchen in my suite but no drinking glasses, cutlery or coffee mugs. I had to go downstairs to get a glass and mug from a supposedly shared kitchen that guests may/may not have been allowed to use. There were no face cloths. The overhead light fixtures had spaces for two 60 watt light bulbs but they only had one light bulb each that was not very bright. I heard another guest repeatedly ask for light bulbs but he was not given any. The windows did not open/close properly. I cut my hand on the metal handle trying to close one of the windows. There was no one at the house, except the cleaning staff (during the day) who did not speak very good English, so I was unable to ask any questions. I know the house is going to be remodeled and/or torn down but skimping on things like light bulbs and face cloths is not the way to get repeat business.
- Del (5/5): If you're on a budget and you lower your expectations, it's passable. - Location was good, not far from downtown and 10 walk from Skytrain (rapid transit). Old house with charm in a very upscale neighbourhood. Considering how expensive Vancouver is, it was a good deal, at least half the price of anything else in equivalent neighbourhood. Beautiful old house but waiting for redevelopment (large sign in front says so!). Property was clearly used as rooming house before. (Each room had a very small kitchenette with sink, fridge and nonworking stove.) The only staff are cleaning people who live there. No owner or manager to be found anywhere. I did not get a single answer or response to a text or voicemail over the whole week I was there, and that was for the number they left on paper when I arrived. Bathroom on 3rd floor had a cracked window with a small traingular piece broken off sitting on ledge outside. That really is quite dangerous and lets in cold air. I told the cleaning staff after a couple of days who seemed surprised by it. She took some photos to share with owner but nothing was done for the rest of my stay. My request for fresh towels after 4 days there from a cleaning staff was not fulfilled, though she was friendly enough. The bath towel was quite small and no face cloth was provided. The kitchen had a coffee maker and there was a bag with coffee beans but the coffee grinder was not working.
- Robert (8/5): Very good - Location was perfect for me. Only complaint would be the dimly light bathroom.
- Paul (5/5): Price was cheap so for the money was a fair deal, except need new matrresse - Location very good bus 1/2 block away Room extremely warm due to weather no A/C and only tiny little table top fan. Old sash windows had to use drawers from night table to hold windows open to get some air in to cool it down.
- Brenda (7/5): Good - There was no breakfast included, as was advertised but when you arrive, it looks like you have access to a full kitchen! There are no signs anywhere telling you that the stovetop and oven are inoperable. Don’t go out and buy groceries for your stay like I did! They really need to post a sign in the kitchen! I liked the old fashioned charm of the place and the location. It was easy to navigate Vancouver by bus from Balfour Avenue. I wish the rooms would have had air conditioning instead of fans!
- Harry (7/5): All good, affordable and effective - Didn’t know anything about breakfast A few details in the room. Bulb burnt out in bathroom, hot water not very hot and Doesn’t last long, an extra towel would be nice.
- Arash (9/5): I loved the building and neighborhood - Very old vibe but decent and comfortable (I had ensuite bathroom). Overall I was very happy especially based on the price I thought there would be shampoo when it wrote toiletries which was a soap. Windows didn’t open which is usually the case. An no staff around. Only one guy living there. Even for housekeeping needed to call and no Fridge
- Nicole (7/5): Good -
- Stephanie (7/5): Great stay for people who are out and about - The location is great. Close to coffee/breakfast, parks and city bikes Our room was dirty. Spider webs in the corner of the ceilings, shower had used soap. Was given a twin size duvet for the bed (which was two twin beds pushed together).
- Jon (2/5): THE GHOST INN... - The location. The failure of the management to show any interest whatsoever in their guests. The key wasn't left in the mailbox as promised. There was no one at check-in or check out.
The shared bathroom didn't have toilet paper for 2 days.
The kitchen was locked, which meant there was nowhere to store or prepare food.
The only way we could get in was by climbing up the outside of the building and prising open an unlocked window.
The facilities are substandard and value for money 3/10.
A shocker!!!
- Anonymous (5/5): You get what you pay for if you want to stay in a beautiful neighborhood but don’t want to pay outrageous prices ce this - Location was awesome
Really unique property Carpets weren’t vacuumed fridge had old food in it
Bed was not exactly comfy. Outlet did not all work
- Richard (7/5): I enjoyed staying at Balfour House, with just a few things missing. - Great location, nice old home, & quiet area. Good sized room & comfortable bed.
Bathrooms were clean. Too bad there is no breakfast offered, I would be fine with a higher rate if it was. There was a towel in the room, but there
should also have been a face cloth & a glass for when brushing your teeth provided - these are standard items, which
usually are supplied at every hotel & B&B.
- Andrii (7/5): Good -
