Guest Reviews
- Alexander (10/5): - Lovely house and location. Nearby pub excellent.
- Jack (3/5): Beautiful location, poor communication - Great Location and lovely setting! We arrived and the inside of the house was so cold, they had left portable heaters in the bedrooms but the other rooms were extremely cold. We tried to message the host via booking.com however we had no response. We then got hold of The Travellers inn and they said they would call us in the morning. We received no phone call. A heating engineer then came out to us on the evening and told us that he would not be able to fix it during our stay. The host has still not replied to us and won’t reply to the booking.com team either. Making our stay overall disappointing.
- Michala (10/5): Breathtakingly beautiful - The house is just beautiful, the views are sensational,it’s within walking distance of a couple of lovely pubs, a bistro just off the drive, a short drive to lots of different lakes, or a 30 minute walk to one of the lakes. Sitting out in a morning with coffee looking out across the views listening to birds tweeting and the river running was just heaven. Seeing grazing sheep from the landing window each morning was uplifting, the view I woke up to was so refreshing. The beds were so comfortable, I loved the pure space of the house and grounds, we were a party of 9 and it still felt spacious. It was lovely to be able to socially cook in the large kitchen and all sit around the dining table before retiring to one of the lounges to play games. It was nice for my my elderly parents to have a ground floor suite, I would stay here again in a heartbeat and two of our party are already intending to re-book with a few friends. I understand some people have said it’s dated and I get what they mean but to me that’s the pure charm of the house and gives it its unique feel, anyone can book into a modern hotel room but if you prefer some character and a taste of tranquility then you can’t go wrong here. There was nothing I didn’t like about this property. I prefer to dwell on the good things, especially when they’re so plentiful.
- ANTHONY (8/5): Long Walking Weekend - Lovely house in good location with excellent views. Ideal for our group with everything available that we needed. Easy access into the hills. Good restaurant options close by. Nothing
- Amy L Richardson (10/5): -
- Mark (8/5): - Location Good space for all the family
- Amanda (8/5): -
- andy (4/5): Amazed that the owner cares so little they haven't addressed any of issues flagged by prior guests. - Lovely views of the surrounding fells. Absence of rudimentary domestic/cleaning items eg no kitchen roll/spare rubbish bag/dustpan/surface cleaner/hoover/hairdryer/iron. No salt & pepper. No desert spoons. No scissors. Housebook instructions were completely inadequate.
No front door mat or means to brush muddy shoes. Back doors unopenable. Lounge sofas took up too much space to render the room unusable.
We were hoping for shabby-chic. It was just shabby.

- Teresa (10/5): - A lovely, spacious house, great for a get together. Well equipped. Stunning location. Plenty of parking. The plumbing took a bit of getting used to but once we worked it out it was fine.
There wasn't a sign for Bramrigg House on the road. You need to take the gravel track off the main road marked The Yan, then pass this building on the left before continuing further up the hill to Bramrigg.
- Niclas (9/5): I just fell in love in this house! - Fantastic charming house! Great surroundings!!
- Gaskell (8/5): -
- Patrick (9/5): Superb -
- Gillian (10/5): Great Birthday break - The location and size were great.
The interior was a little dated and could do with a refresh in painting and furniture and bathrooms
- Ewan (8/5): Very good -
- Paul (10/5): Great old house. Bit oldy worldly but we like that - Location is great
Good pub near Shame it hasn’t got a log burner
- Karen (8/5): Fabulous. Will be back. - The house its self is beautiful inside and out. If you love old houses, this has character, country charm and amazing views. It was imperfectly perfect for us. Very private, lovely garden to the side with the sound of a river running close by. Very good location for Grasmere and plenty of pubs and restarsunt it has to offer. We didn't get chance to try the Yan restarsunt next door but it looked good and I believe they can deliver to the house if you order ahead. We only stayed the weekend and didn't have time to properly figure out the heating system and the Aga, would have been good to have more instructions on these things as the house got very cold and we had an issue with having no hot water for a while, although after contacting the owner we managed to get it back on. Owner was very responsive and helpful. It does get chilly at night, would have been good if fires worked and if they had additional heaters in all the rooms as some radiators didn't come on for us.
- Dean (7/5): Lovely house with an amazing view and great local hikes. - Nice house and view. Great walks starting out from the house. Great space, layout and room sizes, ample parking space for numerous cars. Downstairs bedroom with en-suite would have been perfect for my disabled mother had there been a shower as are was unable to go upstairs.
Lack of dishwasher tablets, just one or two to get your going till you reach a shop would have been nice. Knives were all blunt but we did find a sharpener. Cleaning sponge was dirty, obviously left from the previous tenants.
no instructions on how to use an aga. More teaspoons.
Unable to wash up on the final morning and put away as no sink plugs so had to leave in the dishwasher to finish.
- Philippa (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely house with amazing views.
Within walking distance to Grasmere and the local pub.
Perfect weekend!
- Rebecca (4/5): Other than the location of the property, it was disappointing. - The location of the house was excellent. Unfortunately, I tried multiple times to contact the property manager during our stay but nothing was resolved.
General: the property needs a deep clean. There are a few examples of this, for instance,
I moved the vanity mirror in the downstairs bedroom and found a pile of dead wood lice. The stove top needs a good clean, especially the extractor fan area.
Kitchen: the kitchen is not “fully equipped”. The pots and pans are very old and in need of replacement. We struggled to find pots to cook for 9 people and couldn’t find lids for some of them.
There was no tea towel or washing up liquid. These really are basic items I would expect to be provided. Especially to ensure the guests can wash and dry dishes and keep the place in order. The dust pan and brush is cracked and broken so we couldn’t even sweep up some crumbs.
The dishwasher has lost its runners on the bottom rack and doesn’t slide in or out properly.
The fridge is missing the inner door shelves, although this might seem minor the door shelves are very useful for fridge items and indicates the fridge is damaged.
The crockery has key items missing, like decent mugs (rather than hotel teacups) and pasta bowls (rather than flat plates) and there are no kitchen scissors (essential!).
Washing Machine: we found 2 inches of water sitting at the base of the machine drum.
BBQ: this is not useable. The air vents are missing and it’s full of coal dust from another visitor.
Bedroom door: one of the bedroom doors is off its hinge so needs to be raised up in order to close.
Garden gate: the gate to the lane is broken, with a gap opening which our dogs can fit through. We have tried to block with pieces of wood to stop them getting out, but this isn’t ideal.
Finally, there is no house name sign and we struggled to find the place using Google Maps. The directions on Booking.com are not accurate.
- Anne (10/5): Exceptional -
- Charlotte (7/5): Good - Approx 10 mins walk into Grasmere. Plenty of walks locally from the house without driving. Big house with large rooms, big kitchen and dining room which was perfect for a group staying. This is an old house with plenty of character. Bathroom facilities could do with updating but they were perfectly functional.
- Justin (10/5): Exceptional -
- Naveen (7/5): Good -
- Lyons (4/5): Lovely location - The location and views were great, the house is large with a large garden. The cleaning was not great, the general standard of upkeep was poor.
Simple things like loose and old toilet seats, the downstairs toilet had a cracked cistern and took a long time to refill, it should be replaced. the gate to the bridal path was broken and falling apart, An old tree house in the garden has collapsed but the remains are still left piled under the tree. The front door has a digi lock fitted but the door hasn't been filled or decorated properly after fitting. None of these things will ruin your stay but for this to be the situation so early in the season I assume that these issues are long standing and are very easily and cheaply resolved.
- Karen (8/5): Good base for family gathering - Location, size of property. Easy to contact someone to assist with minor problem which was resolved quickly and appropriately A little more information in the house regarding instructions for some appliances
- Christopher (7/5): Good - Location Not access to cleaning equipment. Mop .... We didn't find if there was
- Amila (1/5): Bad -
- Lorna (8/5): The perfect dog friendly place to explore from 😍 - My friend and I stayed with 2 dogs. It was a great base to explore from and a lovely homely feel to the place. Fantastic location and we are planning to book again as it was such excellent value for money!! There wasn’t really anything we disliked but just for other dog owners to be aware there are sheep in the field directly outside the front door. I would also recommend taking baking trays (there was one and we managed but with more people it could be tricky) if you have a larger party and are cooking. There rest of the kitchen was stocked very well for cutlery, plates etc!!
- Mark. (9/5): Great Location Needs some TLC but worth the trip - Property in great location Cold on arrival we had to phone to get heating put on one on it wasn’t an issue
- Mike (7/5): Lovely place to stay but things need to be sorted out - Great location just outside Grasmere village. Lovely well equipped kitchen. Lounge freezing... Big sofa in front of radiator and fire didn't work. Luckily we found a fan heater but slow to heat up a large room.
Light over toilet downstairs doesn't work had to have a wee by torchlight.
Toilet seat in main bathroom won't stay up... No good for men.
Windows rattle especially during a storm. Blowing blinds open too... These need addressing.
No instructions to work the aga cooker.
- Catherine (7/5): Glorious spot, wonderful views, just a shame the inside is a bit neglected - A fabulous old house- spacious and imposing- with wonderful views, about 20 min walk from the centre of Grasmere and excellently placed for great walks. Lovely cosy kitchen thanks to the Aga. Beautifully proportioned house. Stunning scenery from every window. The interior needs TLC. Everything is very well worn and equipment is bare minimum. If you enjoy music, bring your own radio/speakers/CD player. There is DVD player (though no DVDs or remote control). No books or mugs - bring your own if a cup and saucer isn’t your thing.
The electric fire didn’t work and despite messaging and ringing, unresolved. The living room was very chilly. A number of radiator valves in the house were broken off. Exciting to see a piano but sadly it’s miles out of tune. The en-suite bedroom with its ‘own access’, does have two external doors (it’s in a conservatory) but no key for either anywhere to be seen. Very chilly at night but a call to owners did mean we got the heating put on 24 hours, which helped, esp in absence of working fire.
