Guest Reviews
- Georgina (10/5): Excellent - Lovely apartment, beautiful area and so many activities! Nothing
- David (8/5): -
- Tambye (10/5): Amazing place will return! - Amazing setting and fit out of our cabin Nobody to ask questions even on the number provided during working hours
We were lost
Signage very minimal
- Deborah (9/5): -
- Martha (9/5): -
- Shehnaz (7/5): - Rustic and lovely swim in the lake Not clean and broken taps/furniture
- Kerrie (9/5): -
- Caroline (10/5): A place we relaxed and enjoyed l long walks for a couple of days. - Was perfect, quiet, clean and very comfortable. Just what we needed for a short break. Near lovely pubs and walking routes with great views. Estate Team were on WhatsApp for any issues and very helpful.
- Paul (3/5): Nice cottage but totally deceptive listing. - If you’re looking for a cottage in the middle of nowhere then it’s nice. The photos on the website/listing are nothing like the experience offered. The 3 bedroom house shouldn’t be included in the offering as it’s not even in the estate grounds and you only have 3 hours per day to walk around the grounds and you need to message someone to ask permission to enter. The experience doesn’t feel very warm, especially for £500 per night. Rihanna (or the lady who greets you) was very lovely though.
The dishwasher was left unloaded when we arrived and there were dead flowers in vases.
- Sarah (10/5): The most idyllic staycation, have already recommended to many and will 100% be returning. - Amazing stay, the most picturesque beautiful location my breath was genuinely taken away!! Such fun activities in the lake and gorgeous cabin, so comfy and cozy. Hot tub was amazing! Had a lovely bbq and firepit. Could not recommend more! Nothing! Maybe just would be better if a bit more kindling was provided :)
- Peter (9/5): We all enjoyed it - Quiet Funny smell in room bin was left full
- andrea (9/5): -
- Hannah Bentley (8/5): - Stunning location. The shephards hut was so lovely and cute. There was no lighting on the decking, and so you couldn't see when walking to and from the hot tub at night. Only supplied with 2 coffee pods and the coffee cups supplied didn't fit under the coffee machine.
- Michael (1/5): -
- Pip (8/5): Fabulous place .. a couple of niggles that could easily be sorted! - Great location, peaceful,
Private , great facilities ,
Tastefully done Hot tub heated by fire - but couldn’t get the fire going despite many attempts!
Lack of hot water- intermittently give hot water on an electric pump.
Could only get hold of the staff on what’s app , no
Reply on the mobile - which was a bit frustrating.
- Melanie (10/5): heerlijk!!! - sauna en dan in koude super heldere water springen. Het heerlijke gezellige huis. Top plek
- Matthew (3/5): Disappointed, cold and ripped off. - Beautiful grounds, although limited and underwhelming. I appreciate the Elizabethan apartment is meant to be old, however there is no excuse for blown light bulbs, wasps and flys in the apartment (alive and dead in the window ledges) picture hooks just left on the side and the extractor fan on the oven: job not working, it's some of the worst Accomodation I've stayed in.
The shower also couldn't get hot, it was warm at best, and the heating hadn't been on for sometime, it took 2 days to heat the apartment up.
All in all, just uncomfortable and felt like a rip off.
- holly (10/5): Breathtakingly beautiful! - Stunning place really beautiful location and great for a bit of a relax and unwind or wellness retreat! The fly fishing was great, wild swimming in the lakes and even a sauna pod! We stayed in the lodge and it was lovely. Comfortable 3 bedrooms and lovely morning view of the fields and horses
- Matthew (8/5): -
- Joe (9/5): - Very cosy and romantic cabin where you could watch the wildlife and enjoy nature! Loved the fire pit and bath tub Would have been great for the price to have some extra luxury touches eg. Robes, breakfast hamper, bath salts/bubble bath
- Stephanie (9/5): - Beautiful grounds and cosy Shepherds hut, we had a lovely time. Hot tub and log burner were great extras! Really easy to get to without a car via taxis. A couple of extra things need to be added to the handover cleaning list - we found a huge spiders web in the skylight curtain, and the windows were quite dirty.
- Gabbie (10/5): -
- Adam (9/5): A luxurious stay on a beautiful estate - Beautiful property in stunning location Nothing
- Sandro (7/5): - Die Örtlickeit und Lage ist sehr schön un ruhig!! Dass gewisse Sachen defekt waren wie z.B. Griff vom Gartentor, Haustüre, Kühlschranktüre
- Venus (8/5): -
- Liat (1/5): Not worth the money - The place itself is very beautiful. The place is outrageously priced. Our room had freezing water and the kids just screamed when we showered them, even when we asked them to take care of the problem, they didn't. There was a smelly dishwasher waiting for us in the room, full of dishes, no conditioner, and even though we asked them to, they didn't fill it. You should note that there is nothing to eat in the hotel or its surroundings so know that in advance. The bedrooms are very small and you could barely move around in them. The place itself is very beautiful but poorly managed, which is a real shame.
- Victorials (7/5): Comfortable peace and quiet but overpriced and felt a bit, ship guests in quickly and ship em out! - Spotlessly clean. The main grounds and house were beautiful. Comfy bed in Shepherds hut. Nice shower with hot water. Peace and quiet. Decking with comfortable deckchairs next to waters edge. Good quality furnishings and appliances in hut. Poor communication, which staff blaimed on Booking.com. I have used Booking.com freequently and not had communication problems with other hosts.
Overgrown/weedy and a bit shabby around shepherds hut.
We couldnt get into accommodation until 40mins post check-in time as cleaner was still cleaning when we arrived. No explenation of where we could or couldnt go around grounds, poor direction signposts within grounds, like sign pointing to kitchen garden, which now just appears to be a weedy overgrown path to a log cabin where other guests were staying. Couldn't find signage to sauna and outdoor puersuits area. Main entrance gate not working nor manned on arrival with queue on road to get in.. one person in queue was Avington staff, even she didnt know how to get in. Considering price of shepherds hut, very dissapointed with just two meesley coffee pods, c 4 teabags and tiny amount of longlife milk. Despite dog being booked in, no dog bowls, mat/bed, no welcome doggy treat. There was also a crazy amount (as in 8 dinner plates) of crockery, with no space left for own food and belongings. Fortunately we had no intension of using hot tub as the area didnt look very safe, with branches overhanging tub and rubbing against chimney. We also had no idea of where to find any staff with any queries we had.
- Sarah (7/5): Wonderful family weekend celebrating my husband’s birthday. The kayaking was great fun! - The Otter Loft was very cute and cosy with lovely interior design. Good kitchen facilities and bathrooms. One of the bedrooms has no window you can open and even with the fan provided it was incredibly stuff and hot. In that same room was the boiler which fired up every forty seconds throughout the night. This was mentioned to staff only to be told “they are aware of it and there’s nothing that can be done”. This would have been nice to know in advance.
In the lead up to the stay getting to speak to staff and get answers to e mails was very hit and miss.
- Patrick (7/5): Beautiful cottage with short walk or cycle to the lakes and golf course - Beautiful cottage in lovely quiet village. Easy cycle to the lakes For the price, I think the property needs some tidy up. The patio area needs work to create a nice outdoor space. Kitchen appliances were dated. Finishing touches would make it a fantastic place
- Rob (10/5): Wow wow wow. What an amazing place to unwind. - The estate was beautiful and amazing. You are all very lucky to be working in such an amazing place and the surroundings were beautiful. We both had an amazing time in the shepherd's hut. Hot tub was perfect and just what we needed. Some well deserved r & r. Next time we are going to book x2 nights. 1 night was just not enough and it went by so quickly. We were sad we had to say goodbye so quickly but we know we have found an amazing and beautiful place to unwind and relax. Thank you guys so so much. See you soon. Keep up the super work. Super Super Super. Wow wow wow. Everything was just perfect. Cant fault anything at all..
- Tom (10/5): Exceptional - There was little information in booking.com about the facilities (which were absolutely amazing). Should we know more about the property and what it had to offer we would have plan to spend more time
- Tracey (10/5): Exceptional - We had a fantastic stay in the Tudor Apartment. Perfect for our family gathering of 12 people. We made good use of the fantastic onside facilities including the bikes and row boats!
- Douglas (9/5): Great property, wonderful location, great wildlife (kingfisher, deer, ducks and jumping trout. We thoroughly enjoyed mes - Beautiful surrounding countryside and lakes. We loved sitting out by the lake and feeding the very friendly ducks! We loved it, we would highly recommend a family stay at Avington
- Charlotte (10/5): Absolutely gorgeous accommodation - I stayed here with 5 friends the night before my wedding. It was absolutely incredible and is even better than the photos, very peaceful with ducks walking past. Very spacious rooms and a bathroom with every bedroom. All the amenities and extra activities were such a fantastic extra with absolutely stunning accommodation on the river. Nothing!
- Christine (9/5): Superb -
- Sarah (10/5): Exceptional -
- Dong (10/5): Exceptional -
- Catarina (8/5): A great opportunity to sleep on a true Jane Austen house style - Although we didn’t stay in the place we had originally booked the apartment was very nicely decorated fitting the environment and the reason why we booked such location with a truly “epoque” decoration but comfortable and modern equipped kitchen and bathrooms.
They also booked us a table at the restaurant close by which was really delicious too. My sister has serious arachnophobia and all windows were truly full of spider webs (old ones). Additionally we didn’t stay where we originally planned which in the end they arranged an alternative but we were not completely happy with that switch. Was a bit disappointed for the costs. Additionally we arrived on Saturday afternoon (checkin starts at 15) but one can only walk in the property grounds even for a walk between 9-11 morning except sundays (for family owners). For us staying only two nights was almost not possible the visit.
- Sophie (10/5): Great stay, would recommend - Great stay, clean and very comfortable accommodation Kitchen could have been slightly more well stocked - ie had to request tea towels (which were provided very quickly!)
- Karen (10/5): Wonderful break to relax and recharge, beautiful setting ♥️ - Perfect location, beautiful lodge just perfect 😍 Nothing
- Mehran (10/5): Exceptional -
- Iren (8/5): Very good -
- Lauren (9/5): A gorgeous weekend escape - thoroughly recommend! - It was gorgeous. The tiny house had everything we needed, it was very tastefully decorated and really cosy, perfect for a winter break but it would also be nice in summer with the lake. Large grounds to walk around. The oven didn’t work which was a bit disappointing. I tried the mobile number and someone came out the next morning but they couldn’t fix it. We worked around it and just cooked other stuff with the hob, they were apologetic and to be fair it was New Year’s Eve so no one could visit
- Sigrun (10/5): Excellent place to stay - Very beautifully furnished and extremely comfortable beds. Just a really nice place. We loved everything.
- Sophie (9/5): Superb -
- Richard (10/5): Stunning estate, and such a beautiful settings the house was perfect, with lovely interiors and facilities - Amazing decor, lovely space beautiful walking routes and stunning grounds Nothing
- Peter (9/5): A perfect country cottage - Really quaint country cottage . Located on the Avington estate. ….. 1 pub is a 12 minute walk away and the other is a short drive.
Bedrooms were comfortable. Bedding was clean . Central heating very good and the added fun of a log burner which took a while to get going due to damp logs but not a problem and we had fun trying to sort it.
Games available in the cottage which we used.
Kitchen well equipped…… we took loads of stuff but forgot cling film to wrap our snacks etc.
free use of sauna , wild water swimming , bikes and boats which is excellent. Couldn’t find the light switch for the outside light where the cars are parked
- Zoe (10/5): Wonderful weekend away, lots of comfy beds for a large family group. Well equipped and cosy. - Beautiful building, grand and querky. Very minor point. Had a bedside lamp in one of the rooms but nowhere to plug it in!
- Libbi (9/5): Gorgeous and tranquil property - Beautiful property in a really lovely quiet location. The property was really well equipped, and furnished to an excellent standard. The staff were super helpful and answered all questions very promptly. The grounds are lovely to walk around. Stayed for 3 nights in Lodge Cabin. The shower was cold after my first night there and the pans didn't seem to be compatible with the hob
- David (10/5): Exceptional -
- Anna (7/5): Some great points, however... - Lovely accommodation, old with loads of character. Incredibly comfy beds. Good location for visiting Winchester. We were only allowed to walk around the estate between the hours of 9am and 12pm which was a huge disappointment. This meant that some of us didn't get to see any of the grounds. This is due to private residency but none of us were aware of this at the time of booking.
This also meant that someone in our group set off a very loud alarm every evening when they walked back to their accommodation!
The apartment also wasn't fully equipped for the number of people it sleeps and it was a bit tired in places.
Regardless of the above, the service was incredible and Bepe went above and to rectify a few issues and ensure we had the most comfortable stay. He even dropped off a little hamper to apologise for an error with our booking.
- Christine (10/5): Exceptional -
- Dean (3/5): Poor - The chestnut horse pub. Gaps in the windows.
bugs due to big gaps in the window which i tried to close and the window fell out hurt my shoulder in the process.
fridge handle was broken
broken patio that you can't see at night and being disabled is a cause for concern not worth the £450 a night price tag photos are not recent kitchen ceiling looks like it's had a leak gaps in the door that you can see whoever uses the bathroom 1 of the en suites you hit your head on the ceiling and little bugs swarm/fly round you.i have more photos it won't let me upload.
- Lee (5/5): Passable -
- Teresa (8/5): This was meant to be a perfect family weekend celebrating our golden wedding. Unfortunately we let - The apartment was beautiful in a lovely location No customer service. Nobody to check us in. No staff to help with activities. No health and safety
- Claire (8/5): Luxury accommodation, perfect for a weekend get away - The accommodation and surroundings were fabulous - property is decorated beautifully and has everything you need. Very comfortable. Check in process and finding the lodge/house. The lodges are connected with connecting lockable doors and could be noisy.
- Graham (10/5): Exceptional -
- Tamsin (8/5): Great weekend break in beautiful location - Beautiful location peaceful with great walks and a great variety of activities
Wild swimming fab
Lovely comfortable beds well equipped rooms
Comfortable space that was well dressed
Lovely space to relax and unwind
- Oosthuizen (9/5): Superb -
- Sita (1/5): Poor - Was falsely advertised showing hot tubs and pool tables and swimming pool it was in a very scary location my daughter damaged her car as the path was very narrow it was pouch black with no lighting There were flies everywhere and the number to contact ignored our messages
- Denise (10/5): Exceptional - Location was amazing
- Risharn (10/5): Exceptional - Lots of things to do
Villa was lovely had lots of space Oven wasn’t easy to use was in a different language
- Dukes (7/5): Good -
- Nella (10/5): A wholesome experience, highly recommend - The whole experience was incredible, the attention to detail and the quality was amazing.
- Helen (10/5): Wonderful weekend at the beautiful Avington Estate - Had an absolutely brilliant stay at Avington Estate, we stayed in the Otters Loft apartment and I can't really fault it. We were met on arrival by a really friendly and helpful member of staff and shown to the property, which helped as it was down quite a long (and very pretty) driveway. The accomodation exceeded my expectations - I thought it might be a little bit small from the photos, but overall it was spacious and perfect for our group for the weekend. It's all been fitted out to a really high standard, everything is very good quality, and it was spotlessly clean. The beds are huge and incredibly comfy. Otters Loft is in a beautiful location, it was lovely and quiet, overlooking the chalk streams and near the fishing lakes.
We were lucky with the weather and made the most of the swimming lake and used the complimentary paddle boards and kayaks too, which was loads of fun! We also had a cycle on the bikes along the country lanes, again really good quality equipment and a great bonus to the weekend. Can also highly recommend the nearby pub The Chestnut Horse, had a fantastic meal there.
Wouldn't hesitate to recommend Avington, it's a very special place which was a joy to stay in, and we all enjoyed every second of the trip! We'll be back :) It could do with a few more kitchen utensils, but it didn't matter for our weekend as we weren't doing too much cooking.
- Amy (9/5): Superb -
- Maggie (10/5): Exceptional - We stayed at otters loft. Excellent location surrounded by the estate with Forest & lakes. Excellent Free use of bikes & kayaks. Special thank you to Pipi who looked after us & our needs throughout our stay. The property was an Unusual quaint lovely set up
- Rachel (4/5): Not the relaxing chill out we hoped for, although the place has potential - the lodge was nice to look at, it was comfortable, clean mostly, and well stocked. The surroundings were pretty to look at, it looked a nice place surrounded by nature. The lad looking after us couldn’t have been nicer. The staff tried hard to make things better when things weren’t quite right. Also like you could help yourself to bikes and paddle boards. Gravel everywhere was very noisy, there was constant traffic coming past which was made even noisier by gravel even people walking past was noisy on the gravel both Saturday and Sunday morning woken early. Some kind of quad bike or mower with noisy engine constantly driving by started a little later Sunday,9am! Although lodge seemed private was worker other side of stream while trying to relax and sunbath, wasn’t there constantly but back and forth a banging about early. We were supposed to have a private hot tub but this was miss advertised by booking.com apparently, they did allow us to use one the shepherd hut but this was right across the other side of the estate so didn’t really get much use of it, the staff were helpful though getting it ready and even picked me up Saturday morning and took me over. The wellness centre was not finished and not due to be opened till end of Sept! The wild swimming area was non moving water therefore covered in green algae , not appealing in slightest. The lodge was very hot, no ac and no windows to open as was only glass doors and had to leave these wide open all night, although it felt pretty safe, not the greatest feeling. Anytime we came home after the lodge was shut up it was quite smelly like the bottom of a hamster cage. Bikes were not easy to ride in the gravel and didn’t fancy the paddle-board in the algae. We also did not have a great meal either time we went to the chestnut horse, the estate pub, Sunday lunch was worst I’ve ever had, potatoes were like re heated, hard and tough, requested fresh ones but the never came, had a short black hair on two separate plates which clearly was not any of ours or the waitresses. They were very apologetic and offered us something else but was put off then my dinner which had a hair was not changed and they deducted another 20 for the plate of roasted veg and potatoes which also had a hair on top, we hadn’t eaten much anyway as the potatoes were horrid.
- Tamara (10/5): Amazing. Gorgeous property, beautiful cabin, super comfy bed, had amazing baths in the giant bathtub, loved being right - Beautiful, spread out so not busy You can only wild swim in one lake which has some green algae on it. It was fine but would be nice if they cleared it away.
- Yvette (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jolene (7/5): Good -
- Isy (8/5): lovely, well decorated and maintained apartment - lovely location and friendly staff. beautiful apartment Unfortunately the fitness centre and pool mentioned when we booked were not available. Also there were tennis courts there but not ready for use.
- Alexander (10/5): Perfection. - Everything was PERFECT! The value for money is unreal. Such a beautiful estate and the staff were incredible and so friendly.
- Clive (5/5): A very good room spoilt by the details and the occupants above, would not stay or recommend again - Clean comfortable accommodation. Well found with a wide range of available facilities. The arrivals process was poor with the arrivals information not arriving in good time leaving us with no idea of the procedure and having to telephone for instructions. The accommodation was not described correctly as a living room was listed but was in fact part of the bedroom. Furthermore the occupants of the courtyard cottage above were rather noisy late into the evening (past 2300 hrs ) and overnight which spoilt our sleep. Finally it was a surprise that a dog friendly place restricted access to the grounds outwith the morning.
- Lynette (7/5): Good - We were asked a few times, what we were doing & can I help you?
- Mccleanre (10/5): Incredible stay at the Pavillion - Check-in instructions were clear, I met Helen at the estates office 30 minutes ahead of my check-in time. I then met Josie who upgraded us from a 'Butlers apartment' to 'the Pavillion' which was absolutely outstanding! We both had a wonderful sleep in the outrageously massive and comfortable beds. I particulatly enjoyed reading a book and watching the peacock mooching around the rose garden in the morning. I would highly recommend Avington estate to anyone looking for a bit of luxury and old world charm in Winchester. Nothing!
- Jane (9/5): Relaxing stay in luxury accommodation in fantastic location - The 2 bedroom 2 en suite bathroom cabin that we stayed in was stylishly appointed, beautifully decorated with good quality fittings and furnishings. The location overlooking the river with the decking, comfy outdoor chairs and firepit was lovely. The beds were large and extremely comfortable with very nice quality bedlinen. The showers in both shower rooms were hot and powerful and the fluffy towels were appreciated. We also appreciated the provision of tea, coffee pods and 2 pints of milk. The wifi was good and the access to the property by code rather than key meant no worrying about taking/losing keys! Jiri the onsite maintenance man/troubleshooter was very helpful and obliging and sorted out our minor niggles (see below) quickly. I would have no trouble recommending staying here. The 4 pillows on each bed were all the same and were found by the 4 of us in our party to be too full and firm leading to stiff necks. We found one alternative pillow in a wardrobe which was a little softer so one of us had a better second night! There was no bottle opener/corkscrew but Jiri found one for us within 10 minutes or so. Also there was only comfortable seating for 3 people in a 4 person cabin so we requested a further comfortable chair which Jiri found for us and put in the lounge area which was a little 'cosy' but worth it so we could all sit comfortably. There was no plug in the kitchen sink which made it difficult to wash up. There was a handy dishwasher but as there were only 4 mugs we needed to wash them in between hot drinks! The soundproofing of the cabin could be better as the people in the cabin next door could be heard talking and the gravel driveway meant the sound of cars coming and going outside the front of the cabin was quite loud
- Kelly (3/5): See above - Good location The details on the booking.com website were inaccurate and misleading which led to a very disappointing stay. There was no hot tub even though it clearly stated it when I made the booking. Ruined the stay totally for me and my daughter as I would not have paid that about of money (£800) for bog standard accommodation.
I have emailed Booking.com asking for a refund as I was totally misled
- Leanne (8/5): Great place. - The bed was super comfy, decor was beautiful. Had everything we needed Not really specified it was on the fishery. Very noisy from 8am the following morning with a large group gathering right outside the window.
- Nicole (8/5): Beautiful location - Gorgeous place Very loud didn’t sleep well due to neighbours and there was work going on opposite my apartment which I found it hard to work when I arrived. Also still chasing an invoice I need
- Anna (10/5): Exceptional -
- Tamara (10/5): Exceptional - Simply perfect! !Hoping to go back again when we have another big cause for celebration ! It is stunning
