Guest Reviews
- SHARON (10/5): - The inclusions such as matcha tea experience, welcome drink, ice cream buffet after dinner, the out of the way feel, but close enough to walk the gorge track and into town. Use of private onsen with a booking board.
We stayed in a suite with our own onsen for 2 nights. I didn't like leaving, would like to have stayed longer
- kwok wah gyric (8/5): -
- Marquez (10/5): We regret we only stayed one night - Ambience, staff, location, tea room, sake, all of it.
- Paul (9/5): Great stay with great staff in a retro onsen resort that exceeded expectations - Beautiful team, Gina and staff were wonderful, helpful and warm. Plenty of stuff to entertain our 4yo, and reasonable space given to enjoy the experiences. I had low expectations given some reviews but really did enjoy ourselves. Some old reviews carried on about coffee (maybe at breakfast specifically?) but we found a reasonable dolce vista machine in the room, drip coffee in reception, coffee in vending machines etc, maybe no espresso system or barista there but coffee enough for us. Maybe just bring some milk from family mart if you want fresh (not creamer).
Onsens were fantastic, and we had a spa suite room with terracotta mini onsen in our room, managed a private onsen plus dip in our own room before and after dinner and breakfast! Only an overnight stay but did it all. Last onsen resort we stayed in, staff were on top of us, kaseiki dinner in room (nice but stuffy), but at Ohanami Kyubei, we dined in main restaurants as part of our plans for dinner and breakfast and very much enjoyed it compared to kaseiki. As a family it’s good to have that space. Even managed a retro video game and time in kids play room!
All in all though, the staff made the experience!
Yamanaka onsen town itself was great also, walked the river track and took heaps of photos! Somewhat lingering old Smokey smell in old hallways, maybe from old days of mixed smoking rooms etc, but honestly was fine for us really. Part of the 70s aesthetic I guess !
- Kenneth (10/5): Relaxing stay close to nature - The location of the hotel was right next to the stream/river, and we had a room on the lower floor just above the river, where could hear the sound of soothing flowing water.
The food was buffet style, and was acceptable, though I expected a wider spread.
They have an outdoor private onsen pool with lovely wooded view available for hotel guest to use The buffet spread could be improved
- Yang (9/5): - We enjoyed the many choices of free activities. Lovely quiet location, staff very friendly and professional. They organised a birthday cake for my son's birthday. He was very impressed when it was brought out at dinner, with staff singing birthday song and sprinkling gold flakes!
The free private onsen was popular and had view of the valley and river. Buffet could offer more variety between days.

- KA HIN CARMEN (9/5): A lovely time - We stayed in the Japanese style room and it must have been newly renovated, because the inner decoration is very new, however the bathroom is a bit aged, but it didn't affected us as we didn't even use it at all, we mainly used the private and public onsen available in the hotel. The private onsen is available first-come-first serve, so recommend to reserve it early.
There's welcome drinks and activities available before 6pm, which sadly we weren't able to try because we explored around the hotel and onsen town area (around 15-20 min walk away from hotel) instead, so there's not enough time to do everything. Highly recommend to get to the hotel early and explore the onsen town area and also walk along the trail by the river.
Food served during dinner and breakfast were good, there's no many restaurant or convenient store around, so highly recommend to book their dinner & breakfast package.
The hotel offers free pick up from the nearest station, which was very convenient.
Appreciated that they have a gallery section which showcase the local art and craft.
Noticed the hotel hired a lot of non-Japanese staffs for guest facing role, which is quite different from the other hotels we've stayed. Staffs are friendly in general. There wasn't enough time to explore the osen town area AND do all the hotel activities in one afternoon, would be lovely if the activities and welcome drinks time could be longer.
Believe it's a local thing to "greet" the customers when they enter and leave the dining area, but it was a little bit too much and loud during early breakfast time,

Servizi ottimi e staff gentilissimo e sempre disponibile.
- Dylan St. John (10/5): -
- Ruxandra (10/5): Extraordinary immersion in the Japanese onsen culture. - Extraordinary immersion into the Japanese onsen community. We enjoyed sharing our 3-days experience with local Japanese tourists. Yamanaka has many fantastic authentic, family-owned laquerware and ceramic shops.
- 12bfb075b7247105bcab22b778fba8c4 (10/5): We have a wonderful stay. I will come back again. - We like everything there. Staff is very friendly and nice. We have a special situation, 中村先生helped to resolved it. Room is big and clean. View is great. The private hot springs are very nice. Dinner and breakfast both are excellent. They provide welcome drink and snacks. At night time they also provide ice cream etc. The train stations shuttle is very helpful. Nothing. But give a suggestion: Prepare some western food as optional for breakfast Can help someone who doesn’t eat Japanese food since I saw someone is difficult to pick the food during the breakfast time.
- MAM_0909 (9/5): Better than I expected - Everything is great. Private onsens are good. I especially love the window in our room, so cool.
- Martin Dominguez (10/5): -
- Anh (6/5): Decent ryokan stay, but the public spaces could be improved - We got a suite room with onboard breakfast and dinner. The suite was massive! We had 2 twin beds plus an additional futon room (we didn't use it because we were only 2 people). The suite has its own onsen bathtub with an outdoor river view, which was the highlight of our stay because we could bathe anytime. The food for dinner and breakfast was decent. There were plenty of snacks and other free amenities in the lobby. We received a welcome drink as well. There were free shuttle buses for transport between Kagaonsen station and the ryokan, just need to book them in advance by speaking to the ryokan staff. As we had our own ensuite onsen bathtub, we didn't make use of the public baths, but they were available and we saw a lot of families use them. The ryokan was family-friendly, but that dampened the experience of our stay. The public spaces were just too noisy at times, with kids running around and screaming. We would have appreciated a more private and quiet experience. We stayed for only one night so by the time we checked in, the private outdoor bath had been fully booked for the evening, so that is a disadvantage for those who stay there for only 1 night. The ryokan doesn't allow advanced bookings of this private outdoor bath. In terms of cleanliness, in general the room was very clean. The only complaint we have is that the ensuite bathtub sometimes had wooden chips that fell out of the side of the tub into our water, especially when we were splashing around. Not sure if those chips were clean, might have been moldy as well. Considering the price of our one-night stay there, these aspects could have been improved.
- Juliet (9/5): -
- barbara (10/5): Just what we needed as a relaxing break from negotiating big cities and travel decisions. - It was inclusive, friendly, peaceful and just what we needed to relax. The staff were very helpful and the food was very good. We loved booking a private bath in the evening. There were many little children and young couples that seemed to be enjoying themselves. It’s an older property and our room was spacious, comfortable, and pretty, but there was a musty smell when we first checked in. When we mentioned it at the desk they were very helpful and offered us another room, but it really wasn’t unpleasant and we just forgot about it.

- Grainne (8/5): - Comfortable beds, great facilities (eg dango making, loved playing old Nintendo games, great onsen
Lovely staff - one in particular went out of her way to help me find vegetarian options at breakfast Slightly older rooms but still comfortable. Breakfast wasn’t as good as at other hotels we’ve stayed at in Japan.

- Felix (7/5): A good hotel overall, but not the magical ryokan experience I was hoping for. - Great public onsen, and a wonderful private bath in our room. I personally loved that the hotel was frequented almost exclusively by Japanese families and couples and not overrun by foreign tourists (except for myself and my partner - ironic, I know) - it made the stay feel like an authentic, contemporary Japanese experience. The room with retro Nintendo games was a very pleasant surprise. Everything feels as though it used to be a charming ryokan in the countryside but has since turned into a more touristy hotel that would greatly benefit from renovation. The free activities (like the green tea experience) don’t feel like an authentic ryokan offering - more commercial than traditionally Japanese.
- Simone (9/5): -
- Chun Tse (9/5): -

- Deborah (10/5): The best example of traditional ryokan hospitality! - This is a remarkable ryokan, well-managed and run with high, traditional Japanese standards. The location is excellent, tucked away overlooking the river, yet only a short walk into town. There is plenty of on-site, free parking. Staff are warm and welcoming; helpful and very professional. Nothing was too much trouble.
Our room was large, with a small lounge area overlooking the river and the hills beyond. The futon bedding was extremely comfortable, with crisp linens, soft pillows and fluffy duvets. Everything was very, very clean and well-maintained. There was an abundance of fresh towels and yakuta from which you could help yourself. There are free snacks, coffee, sake, noodle bowls, and ice cream at various times during the day. The indoor public and outdoor, private baths are lovely, with almost every amenity you could wish for. Breakfast was cooked to order and delicious. There was no coffee service at breakfast, only tea, and it would be nice to have a selection of fresh fruit added to the buffet. Otherwise everything was perfect.
- Wen (9/5): Great experience, will come back again - It is a very specious beautiful transitional Japanese style room, The staffs are very nice. The shuttle bus is very convenient to go from train station to hotel. Great onsen in hotel and you can book private one if you prefer. Nothing
- Christopher (1/5): Not good. We checked out early and left for another hotel. - Good in-room ofuro. Lack of meal choices. Mediocre food, Very strict about when it was possible to arrive at meals. The property looked like a cross between a Homewood Suites and a Holiday Inn. Fine for families, but not a unique Japanese inn.

- Diane (8/5): Relaxing room with beautiful view, loved the town and staff were especially helpful. - Beautiful and very serene place, many fun options for activities. We walked along the river and enjoyed many peaceful scenes. Uncrowded hike! Sweet town with lovely people. Nice shuttle bus from train station when we needed it. Mealtimes were noisy and a little confusing, private onsen time was very limited for us. We only stayed one night and most of the slots in the evening were already booked. Then there were no slots in the morning before we needed to check out. We had only one chance.

Nada
- Meredith (1/5): - Did not give the rooms we paid for
- Lisa (8/5): -
- Harriette (10/5): Highly recommended ! - Yamanaka is a wonderful town to visit with a lovely walk along the river and many craft shops. The ryokan’s location is quiet and the dining area is huge with excellent food, service and hospitality. The onsens are wonderful! The room was huge with a view of the river and spotlessly clean. Amazing hospitality! I’m not a futon person but no problem for others who are not as sensitive.
- Remleh (8/5): -
- Tu (10/5): A peaceful and relaxing onsen stay with amazing food, exceptional service, and a perfect riverside location. Highly reco - The food was excellent, with beautifully presented dishes that highlighted local flavors. The service was exceptional. All the staff were warm, friendly, and attentive throughout the stay. The amenities and activities, such as dango making and sake tasting, were wonderful touches that made the experience even more memorable. I also appreciated that they offered both public and private onsens that could be booked easily. The ryokan is right by the Daishoji River and Kakusenkei Gorge Promenade, making it perfect for peaceful morning or evening walks surrounded by nature.
- Clement (6/5): Quality onsen experience but room facilities demanding better maintenance - Quality private onsen, plenty of Japanese experience activities, very friendly staff, spacious room with good view. Room facilities getting old without proper maintenance, smell in corridor outside room from central air conditioning system, limited variety of dishes in meals.
- Lucia (7/5): An adequate onsen experience for a one-night stay, close to a lovely village and nice walking trails - Our corner room on the 3rd floor was very nice and spacious with very large windows on two sides. We had our own onsen, which was great and we really enjoyed using it. The views from our room, during Autumn were also gorgeous. The restaurant room was very noisy, It was unfortunate also that we could not have coffee with fresh milk, but then again, this is Japan and in facilities that are not frequented by many Westerners, perhaps it is felt that providing fresh milk may not be necessary.
- Meredith (1/5): Disappointing and misleading experience - Location is great. I’ve stayed in many ryokans across Japan, and unfortunately, this was one of the most disappointing experiences.
The staff were pleasant but unable to communicate in either Japanese or English, which made every interaction confusing. Nothing was explained — from how the baths work to where to find towels or toiletries. We later discovered that towels are kept downstairs and that we needed to ask for bath soap and shampoo, which nobody told us.
The room we received was not the one shown in the photos. When I asked about it, the staff simply smiled and said all rooms were full, maybe tomorrow we could change — but no one followed up. We had a second reservation as well, and the same issue happened again. I had specifically booked a room with a wooden tub, but instead received an old plastic tub that looked decades old. In the second room- the toilet was filthy with dirt, hairs , and poop splash marks.
The property itself is very run-down. The room was dusty, with a water bottle left under the bed. The private baths didn’t appear to be properly cleaned, especially considering there were only a few minutes between guest uses.
They advertise a shuttle service, but no directions or meeting point were provided, and we were unable to find it despite trying to contact the property.
Breakfast was by far the worst I’ve had in Japan — no options, poor-quality food, and surprisingly, no coffee at all. When we asked if the fish had bones, the staff said no (clearly confused), but it was full of them. We skipped breakfast entirely the next day.
This ryokan is not traditional, not high quality, and the photos are misleading. The lack of communication, poor maintenance, and low standards made for an uncomfortable stay. I would not recommend this property to anyone seeking an authentic or relaxing ryokan experience

- Milja (8/5): Romantic luxurious suite in the most peaceful scenery. - We stayed in the suite which was absolutely amazing. Whilst the hotel might be somewhat old we found our room to be better than expected. Loved the bath. Comfortable wonderful beds. Beautiful interior. Very spacious. Good sound isolation. Lovely sceneries surrounding. Cosy to sometimes open the window to fall asleep to the sound of the river, surrounded by forest and mountains.
Loved the private booking for onsen as well - amazing amazing views. We really enjoyed yamanakaonsen as an area even more than expected. There are cute cafes and restaurants just a 15min walk away and a nice 30-40min walk in the forest around the river.
The staff was kind and helpful all the time.
The free activities were fine but nothing that was of importance to us. Possibly nice bonus for families with children. The food was a little bit of an anticlimax, both the breakfast and included dinner. It was perfectly fine but nothing that we will remember as a highlight from our otherwise lovely weekend. For us the stay really was about the amazing suite and onsen and nature.

I didn’t realise this was such a large ryokan with so many people. It was very busy with several families with young children. For the price I thought I was getting a more boutique experience and nicer room. Couldn’t use the outdoor onsen as it was already fully booked for the night when I checked in.
