Guest Reviews
- Clarisse (9/5): -
- Nathalie (10/5): Fantastisch verblijf!
- Shahaf (10/5): - It was amazing!
The staff, the location, the food, the atmosphere…
10/10
- Aika (10/5): I felt like a queen !!!!! - Very friendly people. Very organized. I loved everything. Warm bottles at night to warm your feet, vegetarian menu adapted to my needs, wood fire, drinking water available and a wonderful massage. All well
- Bernhard (9/5): -
- Ann (10/5): A lovely spot to be taken care of while visiting the nearby park - Lovely staff. Like having your own home. I’d book the two larger rooms on the second floor. The two downstairs rooms can be a little cold and don’t have windows in the bedrooms.
- Janne (10/5): -
- Amy (10/5): Amazing Stay in Kinigi - We loved everything about our stay here. The staff, the room with the private balcony, the delicious dinner, everything was fabulous. There was nothing that was too much trouble and everyone was so welcoming and friendly. Upon returning from trekking you are greeted on the front porch and they whisk away all your muddy items to clean them for you! There is not one negative thing I could say about this place. Truly a gem. Wish we could have stayed longer.
- Fannie (9/5): - Staff is so lovely here. We booked 4 rooms for 5 of us and didn't realize that meant we had the whole property! It was like having our own house. We could sit around the fire in our pajamas and drink wine and play games. It was a lovely stay. The two rooms on the first floor are definitely not the same as the two rooms on the top floor. So book the bigger rooms.
- Josh (9/5): We loved it! - Excellent staff, very clean and comfortable accommodations. Breakfast was amazing as was dinner. Comfortable and cozy.
- Sandra (9/5): Rested and energized ! - Tasteful decor - the open fire- the attentive staff - the gardens- the 4 course evening meal and the breakfast in the garden surrounded by sunbird’s My room was somewhat dark. I couldn’t actually see the volcanos but the gorgeous garden made up for it
- Amy (10/5): Amazing stay at Kinigi cottage - LOVELY facility.
I really enjoyed the breakfast - the best I had during my trip to Rwanda.
The 'small touches' really made a difference to the overall experience.
Amazing staff. All was great!
- Kimberly (10/5): We enjoyed Kinigi Cottage immensely, highly recommend, and would return without hesitation. - We were there for a gorilla trek and the location was 15 min from the check-in point. When we returned the staff cleaned our boots, gaiters, and washed our pants since we were all quite muddy. We took advantage of the sauna and masseuse, who was fantastic! The food was delicious, staff were attentive, and the hot water bottles to chase away the nighttime’s chill were great!! Absolutely nothing-everything was fantastic.
- Eugenia (9/5): -
- Samir (9/5): -
- McIver (9/5): Absolutely recommend! - The staff was incredible! Sandra and everyone else was so helpful and thoughtful, they made our stay very memorable. The room was amazing, with hot water bottles and a cozy fire at night. The food was some of the best I've had at any hotel - do plan to have dinner there! They even cleaner our hiking shoes after our trek to see the gorillas. Can't say enough good things about Kinigi Cottage! Once you're at the cottage, you're pretty much stuck there. Not that it's a bad thing - it's a beautiful location and very relaxing and has everything you need. But you can't really just walk to a little shop or restaurant or something like that. Again, this was fine for us. There was a lot of noise from construction next door, but that is not the fault of Kinigi Cottage!
- Kate (10/5): Wonderful stay - We loved it here - perfect stay before seeing the gorillas. The hotel staff were so wonderful
- Jan (10/5): - A long list of things I liked about property
- everyone present was super nice
- complimentary massage were really good
- proximity to HQ of Volcano Park
- Room was nicely done
- Breakfast - quality of dinner vary
- Erica (8/5): -
- Gary (10/5): A unique experience and everyone is excited about going Gorilla trekking - This Cottage is run by a man from Belgium who has travelled and has created a unique experience. This is a Cottage not a lodge. Having dinner around the table with people across the world is great experience with great food made by the chef as you chat away. Nothing to complain about here!!
- Michael (10/5): -
- Tariq Farid (10/5): - Excellent food,room,host.
- Marcin (8/5): -
- Ebinezer (9/5): -
- Beáta (10/5): A beautifully designed place with spacious rooms, delicious food, and the kindest, most helpful staff you could wish for - This place is beautifully furnished and thoughtfully designed, with spacious and very comfortable rooms. The staff were incredibly kind, welcoming, and helpful, always making sure I had everything I needed. The breakfast was generous and absolutely delicious, and we were also offered dinner, which was fantastic as well. The atmosphere of the place is truly special, peaceful, and warm, and the views over the mountains are simply stunning. I would highly recommend this accommodation to anyone visiting Rwanda, and I truly hope I will have the chance to stay here again in the future.
- Henry (10/5): Eric the driver, Felicity, and the place itself all wonderful. The one and only place to stay ;-) - Eric their driver was really the highlight of our whole trip, apart from the mountain gorillas! He took us from and to Kigali airport as well as the trek. He gave us a full education on Rwanda and is the most wonderful ambassador for his country. The breakfast and Felicity serving it were exceptional. The fireplace in the room, hot water bottle, massage, sauna, all brilliant. Nada
- Guest (9/5): Very nice property - Staff very friendly, beautiful view, very quiet
- JR (9/5): -
- Stephen (9/5): -
- Nadege (10/5): -
- Christian (10/5): - Alles bestens, super Lage und sehr nettes Personal! Am besten das größte Zimmer buchen und man hat alles was man will. Alles bestens
- Regis (1/5): - nothing one of the worst place I've ever seen in term of hospitality...
- Elizabeth (10/5): Absolutely outstanding place to stay near Volcanoes Park - I absolutely adored it here. The place is gorgeous and the interior design and attention to detail is outstanding. I had a fireplace in my room and could have it lit whenever I liked. I extended my stay because the experience was just so good. The food is fantastic, especially the breakfast. Special thanks to the staff member, I forget his name but I was told he’s been there for 4 months. He was exceptional and so polite, attentive and friendly. He went out of his way for anything I asked. All the staff were amazing.
To the person who left (the only) bad review just before me and complained about literally everything, I think some people are miserable will just find things to moan about. Because everything they said I cannot agree with at all. There’s just no pleasing some people, even in a place as wonderful as Kinigi Cottage. The pillows were small, hard and lumpy. I still slept well, but out of place around everything else which was perfect.
- Chisato (1/5): I Don’t Understand the High Ratings – It’s Just Like a Village Homestay - Breakfast: Great, but there was a spider in a cup — very unpleasant. The actual kitchen is a shabby shack and very unhygienic.
Staff: One young lady had great energy. However, even after I politely pointed out several issues to local staff members, nothing was improved. The owner and staff only tried to sound confident instead of solving problems. Their idea of being “positive” was far from professional service. The male staff were often noisy, talking or making phone calls near guest rooms when the owner was away.
Owner: It felt more like staying in the owner’s house than in a proper cottage. The owner acted casually in front of guests — writing staff contracts, scolding employees, or drinking coffee in pajamas.
Heating: The heater worked well, but one day, while I was sick in bed, a male staff entered my room and tried to take it away for another room — unbelievable.
Dinner: The soup was nice, but the grilled chicken was served cold and tasted bad. Staff said it got cold while preparing the side dish, but didn’t reheat or replace it. The dessert looked and tasted spoiled. Dishonest Pricing: Transfers from(from) Kigali and park activities were listed as USD 80 but charged as USD 100. The lodge claimed it was for a “trustworthy driver,” which was untrue. Other reputable companies offer better service for the same or lower price.
Transportation: The driver/guide immediately talked about tips and demanded cash directly, even though payment was supposed to go to the lodge. The car was unsafe — broken windows, no seatbelt buckles, and no working AC. The driver also tried to raise the fee later. On the second trip, the guide left me with a non-English-speaking driver. Totally unreliable.
Facilities:No sauna, no hot bath, no fire at garden, and no kettle or tea in the room as advertised. The bath and sauna was dirty and used for drying laundry(but, the local staff only clean up for the owner and owner's friends). The outdoor fire was always refused by the male staff, even in good weather.
Management: Staff had little experience and avoided passing complaints to the manager, who was absent. Service quality completely depended on the owner’s presence.
Cleanliness:Dirty slippers, used-looking sheets, and an unhygienic kitchen like a shabby shack. Staff uniforms and hygiene were also poor.
Overall:The place feels like staying in someone’s private home, not a proper lodge charging over USD 130 per night. When the owner or manager is away, there’s no responsible person in charge — completely unprofessional. ( The owner was present but showed no intention of solving issues. Instead, even the owner used the facilities as if they were her own, with no regard for paying guests, additionally she was noisy with her friends.)
- Mark (9/5): Super staff made it a great experience - Small and intimate
- Claude (10/5): -
- Casper (9/5): - Friendly staff, delicious and varied food and very cosy! Great location (but make sure you have a 4x4).
- Yoko (10/5): - Love the lodge, facility, staff and food! Best breakfast! It was perfect.
- Scott (10/5): Perfect home from home - AMAZING!!!! - Honestly, don't know where to begin with this review. The place is unbelievable. We had the best stay and my only regret was not being able to stay longer. The place is like a home from home. The location is excellent with all main attractions minutes away. Joachim the manager is very helpful and knowledgeable about the area, and really welcoming. He was recovering from Malaria when we arrived and still made the effort to sit with us, chat and have dinner with us later that night. He helped us plan driving routes for our onward trip to Akagera and ensure we knew what we were doing regarding our Gorilla trek. The staff in general could not be more welcoming or helpful if they tried. They are extremely friendly and John is one of the nicest people we met on our trip to Rwanda. He went out of his way to help us and ensure we were comfortable at every opportunity. The staff cleaned our boots after our Gorilla trek and washed my car at no extra cost even after we had said they didn’t need to. Honestly the nicest people and could not do enough. The food for breakfast, lunch and dinner was exceptional. We are both vegan and they tailored meals to suit our needs. Room was massive and very clean. Views from the balcony over to the Volcano was excellent and lovely to sit out there in the afternoon and take it all in. You can ask for meals to be served in your room and eat on the balcony which was excellent for our lunch following the trek. Bed was excellent as well and very comfortable. I cannot recommend Kinigi cottage enough and would highly recommend you stay here. I am so glad we did, and if we ever return to the Volcanos NP this will be our first choice for accommodation.
- Nissan (10/5): - Amazing stuff, that will do anything for you.
Excelent food, great rooms and the vibe was amazing!
- Pavel (10/5): Best place to stay in Kinigi - The location and facilities of the cottage are great. The manager is also able to provide you with any necessary information or means of transport to the activities you booked in the area. I also have to give high marks to the chef because all the food I had in the cottage was delicious. Not a complaint per se as it is how it is done in the area, but be aware that there is no central heating. During the rainy season it can get cold, especially if you are cold normally. So if that is your case pack accordingly and take some warmer clothes.
- Marine (10/5): Amazing food, amazing staff, super cosy room and living room - Amazing cottage
- Roland (9/5): Mooi gelegen sfeervolle accomodatie.
Ansonsten alles in Ordnung.
- Alfonso (10/5): Home away from home - Wonderful place with a fantastic view of the volcanoes; very well located, very close to the Volcanoes National Park, incredible guests attention, delicious food, very comfortable.
- Golubeva (10/5): - Very nice and cozy place with stylish rooms and tasty breakfast!
Lavaram minhas roupas, me fizeram uma massagem.
- Sara (9/5): Small cozy bed-and-breakfast with sweet little amenities is like hot water bottles to warm your toes before bed - The rooms were perfectly appointed, and I loved the fireplace and big balcony looking over the volcanoes
- Habiba (8/5): -
- Klaudia (10/5): Superb - I have nothing but praise for this accommodation. We stayed in a first-floor room with a window view. The room was spacious, cozy, and spotless. The stone shower with plenty of hot water was wonderful. But my highest praise goes to the staff: their service, delicious food, thoughtful tips for activities after tracking, the hot pillows provided at night, even cleaning our shoes and car without us asking (!!). We were truly devastated when it was time to leave. It was, indeed, a superb experience. Absolutely nothing.
- Ruth (10/5): - We had a big room upstairs with a terrace from where we could see the VIrungas. The guesthouse is located in a very nice garden and behind some trees, so it is a calm and quiet spot. We were hosted with warm hospitality and were supported in all our wishes. The breakfast is delicious and has many different options, so we started the day well and with a lot of energy.
- Jarrah (8/5): Feels like a home stay - Very friendly staff, beautiful spot. Loved the local dancers Nothing all great
- Raymond (10/5): -
- Renee (10/5): Great place in a great location with adorable rooms and great staff! - The food was fantastic...breakfast offered more than enough and dinner was filling and tasty.
- Arlene (9/5): Perfect location - I enjoyed the larger room with balcony
- Muhannaalharthy (10/5): A must stay if you're ever in Kinigi - The view from the balcony, room setup; unique and simple.
John was an amazing host, the breakfast team was accommodating.
The dinner served in the room was sublime That I didn't stay longer
- Anthony (10/5): Beautiful rooms in a leafy location close to Volcanoes NP - Beautiful rooms in a leafy location, great food, small number of guests which meant the communal dining area worked well. A boutique experience. Tourists visit Kinigi for one reason, which is to walk in the Volcanoes National Park. However, the lodge provides no information on this (either written or verbal), and although there might be a plethora of information on the web, none describes the logistics of visiting the park in a concise manner or in a way that is specific to Kinigi Cottage. A simple printed flyer which explains the 7am briefing ritual, the need (and cost) of transport to/from the lodge, the walking options and their cost, the availability of a lunch pack (and the need to order the day prior) would be easy to produce and very helpful if left in each room.
- Carol (9/5): Superb -
- Paul (10/5): Exceptional -
- Deepmala (9/5): Superb - Our stay at Kiningi Cottage was a truly memorable experience. The location is stunning: serene, surrounded by nature, with amazing views and crisp clean air. It’s just a 10-minute drive from the Volcanoes National Park Headquarters, which is a big plus if you're doing a trek.
The guesthouse itself is beautifully designed — exotic, aesthetically done, and very well managed. Everything is spotless and thoughtfully arranged. The staff do everything to make your stay comfortable, and Joachim, the manager, stands out — he's warm, helpful, knowledgeable, and genuinely cares about your comfort.
The breakfast is a delight — a generous spread with pancakes, chia pudding, omelettes, fresh fruit, and more. In the evenings, they light a fire in the living area, creating a cozy space to sit, chat, play cards, or just relax. One evening they even lit a bonfire in the garden and hosted local traditional dancers — a really special touch that made the stay even more memorable.
And just when you think it can’t get better, they come by at night and tuck hot water bottles under your sheets — a simple but wonderful gesture that makes your night warm and comfortable.
Bonus charm: the property has a sweet dog named Nala and a friendly cat called Cheetah, both lovely companions during your stay.
Highly recommended for anyone looking for comfort, beauty, warmth, and a little bit of magic near the jungle.
- Pierre (8/5): Very good - Almost everything: the staff, the owner, the style, the cosiness, the rooms' size, the food, the little attentions, the proximity with the main local activities (hiking, gorillas, visits) Coooooold! This region of Rwanda is cold and wet and, unfortunately, due to its insulation, the cottage also is a bit. Once this is sorted out, the place will be amazing.
- Caroline (10/5): The rooms were large & clean. The porches inviting. Food was good. Pricey. - Beautiful location. Rooms are gorgeous and very large. The shower was hot. The staff are friendly and excellent.
- Naomi (5/5): Passable -
- Natalia (10/5): Little paradise surrounded by volcanoes - Absolutely magical stay! This lodge near Volcanoes National Park is a true hidden gem and one of the best experiences I’ve had while traveling. The location is unbeatable—just a short 15-minute drive to the gorilla trekking meeting point, making it incredibly convenient. You’re completely immersed in nature, surrounded by lush greenery and breathtaking volcano views that make every moment feel surreal.
The lodge itself is done with impeccable taste and so much attention to detail—from the beautifully curated plants and decorations to the cozy, inviting atmosphere. I was welcomed with a lovely souvenir gift in my room, which was such a thoughtful touch. The room was stocked with everything I could possibly need: tea, coffee, plush bathrobes, slippers… it felt like home, but better. At night, the staff even left a hot water bottle in the bed—such a comforting detail after a day of adventure.
The food? Incredible. Breakfast offered a wide variety of delicious options, and dinner was just perfect every night. The common area with the fireplace became a nightly ritual—great music, warm fire, interesting conversations, and a cozy ambiance that made it hard to leave.
Joachim, the host, is an absolute star. Friendly, responsive, and so informative—he was always ready to help with tips, transport arrangements, or anything else we needed, always at a fair price. His warmth and hospitality really stood out.
Oh, and let’s not forget the little things: the team cleaned my muddy shoes and gaiters after trekking (lifesaver!), and the lodge is also home to an adorable family of cats and a sweet dog who made my stay even more special. I couldn’t stop petting them!
This place is paradise. Peaceful, welcoming, beautifully run, and surrounded by the beauty of Rwanda. I’m already dreaming of coming back. Highly, highly recommended Nothing

- Federico (10/5): Intimate and cozy cottage - Staff is so kind and always attentive to any needs (thanks for everything John).
Exceptional and varied breakfast, plus the possibility to have dinner at the cottage, with delicious food and in the company of other guests, which provides a great opportunity to socialize.
Surrounded by nature, with traditional and charming rooms.
Just 5 minutes from the park.
Highly recommended!
- Satish (8/5): Value Stay near Volcano National Park. Good Experience - Great location, good breakfast, owner was a little confused about the number of booked rooms, expect to pay in cash at the the property. Overall decent experience. Property sends information contrary to the booking terms on Booking.com. But everything still works out:)
- Catarina (10/5): Super cool and exclusive Guest House - Guest House well located (not in the crowded village center), neighbour to the best luxurious hotels. The room was very nice and the lobby was amazing. You were invited to chill as you were at home, with open kitchen, firewood, good music. You now that is managed by an international owner. The food was tasty and the team super friendly and cool. Nothing
- Kamilla (9/5): Superb - Excellent views, delicious breakfast and very friendly staff. Mattresses are a bit hard but that is almost always the case in East Africa.
- Marthe (10/5): Amazing, would definitely visit again! - Very cozy, clean and comfortable. Amazing and helpful staff that can tell you all about the things to do around Kinigi and help you with logistics.

- Martina (10/5): Absolutely reccomended :) - We absolutely loved our stay at Kingo Cottage, and would definitely revvomd staying here. It felt like a home away from home! The staff is great and they go a long way to make you feel comfortable, from setting up the fireplace in the room, or preparing hot water bottles for you in the evening! The food is great too both the rich breakfast and the set menu for dinner. The cottage is located in a nice and quiet area surrounded by green. super. Nicely decorated and true to it's location! Definitely reccomend the delux room with the balcony that has an incredible view! Thank you so much for the beautiful stay!
- Ginopop (8/5): Very good - Spectacular overall No wifi
- Milou (9/5): Wonderful stay! Relaxing and quite in nature. - Very attentive staff, close to the entrance of the Vulcanos park. We came back and they washed our shoes and clothes from the hike and warmed up our beds with a “kruik”. Really good food :)! No wifi
- Petra (10/5): A wonderful experience - Very friendly and supportive host, a large and nice room, excellent breakfast. You could not ask for more, highly recommended. Nothing
- Vera (9/5): Superb - Very homey feeling, the rooms were super nice and clean and had nice views. The staff were very helpful and friendly, helping us find a driver and figuring out how we needed to plan for the gorilla trek, and helped us clean our shoes after. The food was good! Large variety in spreads for breakfast. Its a small and charming hotel.
