Guest Reviews
- Barrie (5/5): Acceptable. - Quick access to town. Steep and difficult driveway to negotiate, which made handling of luggage difficult.
- Cleo (7/5): Ideal location and set up for our stay - Paihia Retreat was perfect for our stay. We very much appreciated it being dog friendly so our Cavoodle could enjoy our family weekend away too. While the house was very clean and tidy a noticeable dog smell could be smelt.
- Gayle (6/5): It was an adventure navigating the hazzards - Good space inside
Comfortable beds
Good shower
Good kitchen The driveway was awful. Gate difficult at night
Weeds and long grass
The terrace looked rundown needs a paint
Expensive price for average accommodation
- Glenn (8/5): Overall clean and comfortable - Great size and good location Outside lacked any maintenance. Very overgrown.
Maybe seal the driveway so that it can be used .
- June (8/5): We had a great time at Paihia and enjoyed our stay. - Paihia Retreat is spacious and reasonably private. It had all that we needed for our stay. Communication was excellent and our host was very accomodating for the needs of our group - thank you for this. The driveway was tricky - we had a lot of heavyish sports gear and on the last day packing on the slope was a bit of a mission.
Would not recommend for people with mobility issues.

- Jackie (9/5): Lovely family holiday home in a beautiful location with great valley views. - Location location location. Paihia Retreat is in an amazing spot looking across a lovely valley. It is well set up and equiped for a family stay. We had mostly great weather and spent most of our time on the beautiful rear deck looking over the valley. Even when it rained it was beautiful to look out over the valley. It’s walking distance to the centre of Paihia. A great spot! There were some parts that needed refreshing. The curtains on the master bedroom jam when you pull them across, and didn’t block out the morning light very well. The couch, while comfortable, has a ‘distressed’ look (is shedding its faux leather exterior). The laundry powder container, was empty. But all of that was pretty insignificant, when we could spend time looking out over the beautiful view.

- Kellee (10/5): -
- Tristan (10/5): Exceptional - Space and lot of room There wasn't there not to like
- Anne (8/5): Comfortable clean house. Backyard and driveway a disaster. - Very clean and well equipped. Bed was comfortable. The disgraceful condition of the backyard. It is an overgrown mess. The driveway is extremely steep. Desperately needs to be concreted. The gravel surface is not good. We drove down and had to use 4wd to reverse out. I wouldn’t recommend going down if you are not confident in your hand brake. If you do, reverse down. Mosquitoes were a problem. The windows don’t have insect screens and there was no bug spray for biting insects or the cockroaches. Each bedroom needs a fan and working bedside lamps.
- Korena (8/5): Short stay in Bay of Islands - Great location, comfortable beds, excellent communication.
- Karen (9/5): A great place to stay whilst in Paihia. Would certainly use again. - The property was great & very spacious. There were 4 of us but it could have easily accommodated 6. It had a great deck looking over bush & you could hear kiwis at night. Only a 5 minute drive into town for restaurants etc. Having 2 bathrooms was essential & everything was there to make the stay comfortable. The driveway was....challenging. We went down it once to drop off baggage & after that parked at the top & walked down. It was steep & had gravel. However that would not be enough to make us not stay again.
- Julie (8/5): Ideal base for twin coast cycle (with driver to shuttle) and exploring Bay of Islands - Morning and afternoon sun. Peaceful. Nice view of trees. Great deck. Dogs allowed. Good location. Washer and drier. Dishwasher. Tricky driveway. No umbrella or shade on the deck.
- Carolyn (8/5): Had most of the things we needed and peaceful. - The property was quite nestled in the hills and we enjoyed the birds visiting on the deck and the bush views. Good having bathroom and ensuite for our family. We were told the driveway was steep, but it was really extremely steep. Our vehicle could not get all the way down and back up and one of our family had mobility issues so was a challenging week.
- Rongomai (10/5): Reflections - The accommodation suited our needs and exceeded our expectations. An upmarket homely feel to unwind after a busy day, the balcony is a great reason to sit back with a drink and reflect.
- Pauline (8/5): Enjoyed our stay, our ‘dislikes’ irritants but not game-changers. - Location. Outlook. Kitchen/lounge facilities.
Aircon Second bedroom very congested, no side tables.
Ensuite bathroom extremely small.
- Emily (2/5): Would not recommend this property to anyone needs a major up grade especially having to pay nearly 500 a night for two n - That it had a washer and dryer to sort out clothes and towels The drive way sux it was too steep and the owner should have said not to drive right down to the bottom of the driveway and it meant we slid on the gravel trying to get out in our truck and our truck got damaged smashed tail light damage to right side guard and other damage , and the next morning we had to get a tow truck to help us get out which cost 200 . After paying 500 a night it was not value for money, the facilities were basic and my grand daughter got flea bites, for the amount we paid it should at least have a spa pool, also there was a down stairs which should have been available to us for the price we paid for one night 500 a night , also after asking the owner before we arrived if we needed to bring towels she said no they are all supplied , but after arriving the towels alllocated was minamilist and did not include beach towels .
- Su (5/5): Passable - Not so clean, found hairs on bed sheet. only one air con in the house ,no fan,too hot in yhe room.
- Debbie (10/5): Loved our stay - Nice spacious home in quiet setting Driveway was steep
- Miranda (8/5): Would have been perfect except for the dangerously steep/narrow driveway - Driveway was dangerous and pretty much not useable and would strongly factor in a decision to stay there again despite everything else being perfect.
- David (9/5): Superb -
- Tanabe (9/5): We had a great Christmas family holiday at Piha Retreat, we would definitely return 😄 - We loved the tranquil bush location and views, easy downhill stroll to shops and waterfront, nice cafes and places to eat. Home was spacious, clean and tidy.
Communication with host was very good. The downhill driveway is steep, but it can easily accommodate two cars without having to navigate the awkward bend at the bottom. Easy once you have parked there a couple of times.
- Zhanikaeva (9/5): Superb - I absolutely loved this house! It had everything necessary for a comfortable and relaxing stay, and the cozy atmosphere made it feel like home. The location was perfect – just a 5-minute walk from the center, but still peaceful and away from the noise of the crowds. One of the highlights was hearing native birds at night, which added a special charm to the experience. It’s an ideal place for anyone looking for both convenience and tranquility. Highly recommended!
- Danita (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sara (10/5): Exceptional -
- Liz (8/5): Thank you so much - Beautiful house and location, host was amazing and communication was excellent Be mindful of the driveway as it is narrow and gravel
- Melanie (10/5): Perfect for the family in Pahia - Great location close to the shops. Wonderful kitchen, warm and cosy, very dog friendly. It was so nice to have our dog be able to stay with us. Beds are comfy.
- Rajashekar (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sinharpal (8/5): Very good -
- Nick (9/5): Superb -
- Henry (8/5): Very good -
- Aaron (8/5): Very good -
- Simon (9/5): Superb -
- Sharon (8/5): Great stay - Great location
Newly renovated. 2 bathrooms. New kitchen & appliances.
- Gilbert (9/5): Superb - Value for money. Complete facilities and proximity to the beach.
Full functional kitchen, toilet and bath. Good sized rooms and living space. The driveway is quite tricky to park two cars and there's no barbeque.
Overall, excellent host and great property.
- Andrew (9/5): Hidden gem in Paihia - Great for our little kid, well fenced, nice nooks for getting away. Driveway was hard to navigate
- Raeleen (9/5): Superb - The house was newly renovated and very comfortable. Great deck looking across the green valley. Easy walk to the shops and water. Good communication. The driveway - but not as difficult as it looks.
- Adriana (10/5): Very clean and tidy and catered well to our group. Instructions were clear. Would definitely stay here again if needed : -
- Josephine (10/5): Exceptional - Luvved this beautiful home
