Guest Reviews
- Clare (10/5): Felt like a really authentic Cretan experience; would love to return some day. - Beautiful old Venetian era house, filled with treasures from the past. The owner Anastasia is a delight- an absolute fount of knowledge about the history, culture, food and sights in the area.
Lovely traditional Cretan breakfast every morning.
Anastasia had excellent recommendations for what to see and do, and where to eat.
Kouriton House and Anastasia are part of the ecotourism movement, promoting gentler, sustainable tourism, and respectfully supporting local farmers, craftsmen and small businesses. We liked everything about it
- Myshkin (6/5): - Anastasia is lovely Bed is too hard

- Debbie (9/5): A lovingly restored traditional home with a fascinating host - Kouriton House is a beautiful and unique property offering an exceptional Cretan experience. Anastasia is so proud of her heritage and her home and loves to share her extensive knowledge of the local history, culture and cuisine with her guests. The location is stunning with access to some beautiful walks and fascinating archaeology nearby as well as the delights of the village itself. Great tavernas in the village about 10 minutes walk away. The accommodation provides remarkable value for money. Very small points but we would have enjoyed some furniture or cushions on the terrace to relax in the beautiful courtyard. Also a kettle for an early morning coffee.
- JJ (10/5): True authentic stay in Crete. - What a magical place to stay – full of knowledge, beautiful lessons, and warm, passionate people.
We fell in love with the adorable owner, Anastasia, and her traditional Cretan house.
She is an Ancient Greek professor, a walking encyclopaedia of history, tradition, food, and plants – an eclectic collector of knowledge, passionate about sharing it with her guests. She is also an international speaker who has received multiple awards, though she remains very modest about it.
We stayed for four nights and were truly sorry to leave, as we felt like part of the family. Anastasia, her son Dimitri, and her friend Viviana – the talented historic architect who helped her regenerate this house – created a shelter of love, fun and wisdom for us. Thanks to their ideas and suggestions, we visited amazing Minoan and pre-Minoan sites in the region, found family-owned tavernas, and discovered all types of experiences (honey visits, winery, olive oil tastings, pottery, etc).
Everywhere we went, we discovered that Anastasia is known and loved, a driving force for preservation in Crete.
As she says in her charming Greek-English: “Old stones (ruins) are memory. So I love them, rebuild what is possible, and take care of them.”
In a nutshell, this wonderful place is perfect for you if you:
• Prefer to experience old traditions and places in a truly authentic way.
• Like to learn about and respect the traditions and culture of the people and places you visit.
• Are curious and enjoy slow rhythms during your holiday.
• Appreciate the feeling of being with family, with all that it entails.
• Enjoy homemade traditional breakfasts.
This place is not for you if you:
• Are looking for luxury or modern facilities.
• Are in a rush, with no time (or patience) to talk, listen, and learn about the place you are visiting.
Thank you, dearest Anastasia!
You made our trip to Crete a truly special experience. JJ and Claudia Nothing
- ALEV (1/5): Rezalet.

- Anne (10/5): The house was very beautiful and so was the host - The host (Anastasia) was amazing The cosyness and ambiance
- Vasileios (10/5): I will go there again - Authentic vibes of a venetian era. Uttermost and genuine hospitality. - Giampiero (7/5): Good -
- Edward (7/5): Charming stay with Anastasia - Kouriton House is a unique place to stay. The house is very charming and is just outside the the village of Margarites. The host, Anastasia, is extremely friendly and informative -- but you need to be patient as English is not her first language. She helped us speak a few words of Greek and gave us some good suggestions for places to see in the area. We had the room on the first floor, which has a sitting room and a separate bedroom. The place is charming. Making our stay better was meeting some friends of Anastasia's, who were staying during our stay and gave us more information on the area. Breakfast was not great. The bathroom is tiny and needs work.
- Tricia (10/5): amazing - everything nothing
- Darren (5/5): Niche, a different experience - The house is mostly beautiful, but it is a house not a hotel.
Good breakfast but make sure you ask for vegan/vegetarian on arrival as the host will assume you eat meat. We had no windows in our bedroom, the access to it was by very steep stairs, almost a ladder. No furniture to unpack things into. No tea/coffee making facilities in room. Also was supposed to be double bed but had 2 singles pushed together.
The host means well but is over enthusiastic about her interests and loves to give lectures on Crete and the environment. This is fine if that is what you want. We didn’t and found it awkward to extract ourselves from these unasked for lessons.
- Pierre (9/5): Immersive local experience - Kouriton House was a delightful place to stay. Hostess Anastasia is a wellspring of knowledge about the area and its history, and greater Crete in general. She made us hand-drawn maps of driving routes and suggested off the beaten track places to visit. Her passion for, and support of, the local community shines through - from the caring restoration of this historic property to the locally sourced ingredients on the breakfast table. I would wholeheartedly recommend a visit. -
- Shlaymi (6/5): Pleasant - Great location next to the village and walking trails.
The house is very beautiful. The shower is extremely small and smelly. The bed was not comfortable. A mediocre breakfast was served on the cheapest plastic stuff with covid as an excuse.
Most important..the owner didn't respect our privacy. From the moment we arrived, she just didn't stop talking even when we went to our room. We fled early in the morning just to avoid her.
