- Giustino Michelangelo Iacono (2/5): Nightmare on Booking Street in Aswan... - The apartment was potentially beautiful and well furnished. To begin with they sent a car without asking and without mentioning it was NOT free, it ended up costing double what a normal taxi costs in Aswan. The apartment was in a dirty dusty street with raw sewage flowing in it and a trash heep. The old man who manages it was constantly trying to convince us to hire him as a driver for outrageous prices. He was constantly ringing the bell to bother us and try to sell us some service or another. The apartment was not clean and looked like someone usually lives there and just goes away when it is rented out.
- Darenegademama (3/5): Poor - This is a GREAT spot for a SPECIFIC type of trip / traveler .... Read my full review to see if that is you, or not.
Our party was a group of four, middle-class women from the United States
I, personally, am an adventurous traveler and found this place interesting (but just.too.hot) ... but the rest of my group was uncomfortable with:
a) the remoteness of the location
b) the lack of amenities (bottled water, a/c, a swimming pool -because it was in the listing, so they were looking forward to it)
c) efficient transportation
d) the level of cleanliness (it was "wiped down clean", but not "CLEAN-clean").
THE PROs:
Renting this apartment benefits a local family instead of some corporate conglomerate. The rental price was inexpensive compared to hotel rates in the area.
The apartment owner was responsive, and quick to reply to any communication I sent.
The "Onsite Manager" was earnest. Polite, kind, very quick to respond to any request - but speaks very little, broken, English - so communication was a little challenging. He's the father of the apartment owner. (I liked him).
Bathroom was large, clean and updated. Kitchen clean-ish, but it could really benefit from a rigorous deep scrub.
All faucets, toilets, drains, appliances, televisions, etc in good working order. Laundry washing machine was a recent model and worked great.
Furniture, bath linens, and bed linens were clean (dishcloths and cleaning rags were used, but wrung out and dry).
That the apartment is, literally, RIGHT on the bank of the Nile.
...This was a very attractive feature for me -- I'd REALLY have loved to go for a swim -- but my travelling companions were not up for that...at all (as I was the paid guide for the group, I was required to acquiesce to their wishes). The owner has put some misleading information in the Booking.com listing. I assume it is in hopes of drawing more customers ... but it is better to honestly attract customers who are SO HAPPY with the accommodations than to lure unsuspecting customers in on false pretenses.
This is why I gave so few stars - to draw down the expectations that have been set by a small handful of 10/10 ratings by recent, enthusiastic guests, and also promises in the listing, itself, of features and amenities that do not, in fact, exist.
In the USA, this would be considered a 1.5 to 2 star accommodation.
My group struggled heavily with the remote location and lack of amenities - and it ruined their stay. We actually left and found other accommodations after being in the apartment for only two hours.
THE FACTS:
This is a top floor apartment of a ramshackle building out in "the sticks" of Aswan - down a twisty, dirt road with no name. Taxis did not come to the location -- we had to walk to a meeting point several 'blocks' away for any pickup.
Despite the listing claiming to have them, there is no swimming pool, nor hot tub. No other amenities, of any kind, besides what is contained within the walls of the apartment.
There is 1 'mini-split' style a/c unit located in 1 of the bedrooms ... it's a large-ish unit, but because of the size and layout of the apartment, the cold air doesn't extend past the one room the unit is in. There is 1 floor fan, and 1 desk fan (mounted to the wall) to cool the rest of the unit.
Our stay was in early June...outside temperatures were 115 F (46 C) ... The combination of: 3rd floor, 1 secluded a/c unit, and just 2 old fans meant the temperature in the unit hovered around 105 F (40 C).
Even after two hours with a/c at full-power, and fans strategically placed, we could not get the place to be any cooler. The heat was overwhelming and oppressive.
- Myckal (9/5): Fantastic host and great stay by the Nile - We very much enjoyed our time at this place. We arrived late at night, but Mohammed greeted us with genuine hospitality and our stay at his place was comfortable. There is a great view of the Nile river from the upper story of his house he even invited me into his own home for tea And we had a wonderful chat together. The best part that really made an impression on us was when we accidentally left a small bag of important items and his son took the two hour trip up to Luxor to drop the items off for us. I would recommend this place and would stay here again. Just be aware that the road was a little challenging to get to his place by car. The bed in one of the rooms was a little uncomfortable and hard.
- Jessica (10/5): A lovely peaceful stay - This was a lovely apartment to stay at, whole apartment all to yourself in a close but quiet area in Aswan!
The manager Mohammed was incredibly kind, helpful and looked after us very well Peaceful, spacious
- Mahmoud (9/5): Superb - Excellent apartment
