Guest Reviews
- Heloise (9/5): 5 star Well worth the cost - Love staying in castles and Gates...and Swanswell gate didn't disapoint.
I was worried about whether it would be cold...Ineed not have worried there are exactly 10 heaters there and only 1 was needed in the kitchen at the ground level as the heat flows up!
The highlight was the floating stairs, shower room and the bed...so comfy
Milk, tea & coffee were left out for us....
The WiFi only went off a couple of times and we were right in the heart of Coventry...Sainsbury's just across the road with the Bus station.....Tesco is around the corner.
The garden behind was spectacular we walked round and no one bothered us. There is also a bridge you can see the sights and all this lights up at night. I don't like light coming in but it's difficult for the owner as they want to show a little bit of the turret on top of the castle and for this they have a special window that can't have a blind.
The bathroom š» floor wasn't that clean
- John (8/5): Great comfortable stay.. great location will be back ! - Location and decor No non opening windows in the lounge..and cobwebs in master room
- Claire (10/5): Beautiful property in an excellent location - The property is just stunning. A real touch of luxury with princess in the castle vibes.
Sensitively presented with the history of the property in mind, its comfortable, secure and so quiet that you could actually be anywhere despite being in the heart of the city. The property is over three floors with quite narrow steep stairs- while it wasnt an issue for us, it could be for others.
Its a tiny thing, and didnt affect our stay, but theres no cork screw or wine glasses at the property - that we could locate - small teeny thing. Fit for a princess. :)
- Duncan (5/5): -
- Jenni (10/5): Abs fabtastic. - Its oldy worldy and this makes it a beautiful. Building to stay in. There is nothing that we dont like.
- Zac (10/5): My favourite weekend getaway so far. - This location is almost too good to believe. I still can't quite comprehend that we got to stay in such a fantastic building for such a reasonable price. I've paid more for Travelodges, whereas this was a luxury. The building is stunning and the space is well-utilised, and getting an private accomodation with a kitchen, private bathroom, sitting room AND bedroom all to yourself is good enough, paired with getting a literal tower to yourself? It really is unbeatable. It's well worth it. There's honestly nothing more to say. 11/10.
- Simon (9/5): -
- Murphy (10/5): - The property was very unique and clean...and the property manager is very helpful and friendly. Would definitely recommend this property and other properties that are managed by the same woman.
- Mortimer (8/5): Absolutely stunning property and quite exciting to stay in for its history and uniqueness. One extremely bad downfall of - The property itself so unique and modernly styled. Amazing property to stay in especially given most people didnāt know you could stay there. Only criticism we had were there was no tea, coffee sugar, milk etc which would have been nice for in the morning and tv signal was bad (totally respect the age of the building and thickness of the walls).
- Seth1003 (9/5): Aesthetically and comfortably fantastic - The only thing i would change is the TV size. For such a lovely place, the size of the TV is the only letdown, but if a TV size is the only thing to worry about then you're definitely doing something right. The TV was far too small for that great apartment
- Gloria (9/5): Will have to book for 2 days next time I love it - I like the location and itās very Peaceful Itās very chilly in there other than that itās perfect
- Mark (2/5): -
- Irfaan (10/5): Excellent location and perfect place to stay - Perfect location šš Location food bars just A walk away
- liam (1/5): - Didn't really like much the building was nice but in the wrong location. On arrival I had to park nearly a mile away in a very dodgy area as there is no parking on site at a cost of 11 pounds. Eventually got to the property to find i could not get in the key coded door, I called up and was given another key code. I entered the property to find that is was very dirty and the TV didn't work also no heating , no curtains so everyone was looking through your windows and people injecting drugs outside the main door i tried to contact the host who was a complete waist of time but did get hold of a lady called Laura who was absolutely brilliant , I told her we was leaving for above reasons so left the same night. If your thinking of staying there visit before you commit and you will see where im coming from, I did eventually get a full refund thanks to Laura but the host told booking. Com I didn't show up to the property, I then sent pictures of inside the property which confirmed I had.
- Peter (6/5): Interesting, but lacking - Lovely place, quirky and historic Lack of cutlery (ONE fork!!), no salt or pepper, no tea bags or coffee.
- Clark (10/5): - Lack of kitchen accessories
- thomas (10/5): - Lovely historic setting, warm and cosy No complaints
- Michael (10/5): -
- Michael (10/5): -
- Jasmine (1/5): Very beautiful location but the managers are very unprofessional and bad at their job! - My husband and i choose the accomodation for a trip over our wedding anniversary wich was a big mistake.
When we arrived the place was a complete mess not cleaned at all, the heating wasn't working and we had trouble even reaching the property managers.
When we finally reached out to them they at least sent a cleaning team.
At the time the cleaning team was here we were still talking to the managers and didn't realized the cleaning team trashed one of our bags, the respond of the mangers simply was that we were there and should have realised, no sorry or offer to replace the items.
After that they sent someone for the heating system wich told us that in fact it isn't working, again the managers tried to gaslight us and tell us its not like this.
So we did not only had to come to a dirty cold flat, they didn't even tried to find a proper solution after all of it went wrong!
When we asked them if we can at least cancel our booking and go to a accomodation that is proffesional they declined it, and afterwards told us we were deciding to stay in the property.
Very unprofessional and kind of ruined our stay, so maybe reconsider booking a stay with them.

- Nicole (8/5): Gorgeous building, great location - with some minor improvements - it would be perfect! - Got emailed the code for the door before, super easy! Asked for early check in and late check out which they accommodated. Central location and really quirky. Literally a castle/church like building in the town centre. Supermarkets, fast food, pubs, restaurants and clothes shops very close by and in walking distance. Outside the transport museum and right near bus station. Public car park cost £11 for the time we were there. Also a 3 minute walk. Lovely decor inside. Shower room was great. The building is over 3 floors. Strong wifi with smart TV in lounge. Bed really comfy and nice dressing area. Nice and warm and cosy in bedroom. My favourite part! Very basic utensils in the kitchen. We only stayed for 1 night and didn't find we had what we needed. Only 4 glasses in the kitchen. 2 of which had been stuck together. No wine glasses. just a pint glass and juice tumbler. 3 dinner plates only, 1 with a crack in. 2 teaspoons. No washing liquid or dishwasher tabs to clean these. Only 2 coffee mugs. Coffee machine but no pods. No tinfoil or liners in oven. Freezing cold on bottom and 2nd floor (kitchen and lounge). No instructions on how to work things but figured it out ourselves eventually. No blankets in the lounge to make up for freezing room. Old building so this is understandable but the electric radiator provided in this room was damaged and didn't work. Only 1 set of towels provided for 2 people so had to share with my husband. No TV in the bedroom and wifi doesn't quite reach upstairs. Small upgrades would make this perfect!! New glasses, cutlery and plates. Basic kitchen essentials e.g washing liquid, tea towels, cloths. Cosy blankets for lounge. Bigger TV. Some noise from the street in the night worth a mention. Blinds were damaged in parts and let the light in. Expected cobwebs due to old building but behind bedside tables, on drawers, all over fan and in corners of the room where reachable could have been cleaned better. Found empty toilet role on floor so attention to detail when cleaning could be better.
- Kitzalan (10/5): -
- Lee (9/5): - Great innovative use of this old structure all mod cons love it šš»
- Paul (7/5): Fantastic place to stay they just need to make sure the attention to detail isnāt forgotten about would have given this - Loved the location and the tasteful way the building has been restored spacious bedroom and living area No heating to the living area there was an old electric heater that didnāt work so it was very cold in that space. The kitchen didnāt have very much in the way of utensils and glasses it also hadnāt been cleaned properly main areas were ok but other bits werenāt also not enough toilet paper and no workable heating in the bathroom
- Jade (10/5): -
- Davef5520 (7/5): Wow factor accommodation like a Tardis, rough end of town. - Wi-Fi didn't work, lack of matching glasses, took a while to warm up, TV didn't work (Wi-Fi)
- Tom (10/5): -
- Tracy (8/5): -
- Allan (9/5): -
- Alex (9/5): Happy in the little castle š° - The castle is brilliant Nothing
- Nadine (9/5): Overall great experience, one for the memory bank! - Amazing piece of history, sympathetically restored, reasonably well equipped. It was chilly on arrival and we struggled to warm it up - plus automatic heating in the morning was too late for us.
- Stephen (8/5): Historic stay in Coventry - We loved the building, the history and how it has been so sympathetically adapted to such a fine apartment. In spite of being such an old building we were warm and snug.We loved the quilt displayed in the bedroom and the explanation. We hadso much difficulty finding the Car park recommended and gave up using a different car park instead after getting very frustrated.Clearly the location is noisy because of being in the middle of all the action but if you're after peace and quiet this is not the place to find it.
Larger bath towels would have been nice.
- Timthy Johnston (9/5): A little piece of fairytale castle magic - 1. It is absolutely beautiful building
2. Interior is absolutely fabulous
3. Wonderful and clean
4. Great facilities
5. I left my watch, cleaning staff and supervisor went above and beyond to get it back for me.
6. Absolute steal of a stay at the price. Being very picky here, no wine glasses! And as others have said, the local population can make you feel a bit on edge but they were no bother at all, and didn't hear anything overnight!
- Heather (10/5): -
- Tim (10/5): -
- Jodie (10/5): Cosy and spacious with good location - Very spacious good location The cobwebs :) and would of also been good to have some information/general knowledge on the history of the building
- Amy (6/5): Beautiful building - The place is absolutely beautiful Needs little things sorting. Broken window been there every time we have stayed. Wifi cuts out constantly so cant use the television. Blinds broken on various windows and other minor issues. All can be fixed easily but haven't been on all the occasions we have stayed which is disappointing.
- Mark (10/5): -
- Andrea (7/5): 1 night in Coventry - The accommodation is lovely, over 3 floors. Very clean with everything you might need. This building is right in the middle of Coventry. There is no car park, nearest park 4 min walk away.
The building and amenities were great value for money. But the homeless or drunk people right outside the museum area next door were very loud through the night.
- Martin (10/5): - could have been some coffee sachets , lots of tea bags but no coffee, also instructions on how to work the coffee machine
- Robert (10/5): -
- Stacey (5/5): -
- Faith (10/5): Comfy stay - Really lovely stay ā clean, comfy, and the bed was amazing. The only downside is the area outside, which feels a bit rough, but once youāre inside the place itās spot on. Would happily stay again. Nothing it was lovely.
- OHara (10/5): Excellent rustic feel - The facilities were exceptional, and the rustic feel of the city gate was well-kept inside. The entire stay felt very secluded despite being in the heart of the city. 10/10 definitely staying again
- Henry (8/5): - Beautiful adaptation of a medieval gatehouse into truly unique accommodation.
- Grant (10/5): Exceptional - Definitely recommend this place
- Simone (10/5): Exceptional - Right on the edge of town, very convenient. The interior is beautiful, I'd like to live here permanently, stunning.
- Ben (6/5): Pleasant - The property is unique Itās in such a bad area the park was full of people taking drugs and drinking alcohol till the early hours and banging on the doors
- Caroline (9/5): Lovely escape in a historical setting. - The history behind our property in a great location, second visit there. With the property being stone I thought it would have been cooler but with this heatwave,we really could have done with a fan,as at times it was boiling in there.
- Madhatter (7/5): Good - Great novel Parking
- Shane (1/5): Bad locale description.i did not feel safe - Itās a cool building Well, the property states that itās in the center of Coventry that does not really explain where it is. Also, where I had to park my car which was suggested by the property management at Swanswell, was full of homeless people and in an area that I didnāt feel safe leaving my car. When I got to the building, there was trash against the door. There was homeless bags somebodyās bags, some homeless person bags and I couldnāt even get into the door if I wanted to, so I canceled my reservation immediately and I was not refunded anything. Of course that is the policy because it wasnāt 24 hours, but I never would have rented this place if I had known where it was and the condition of the surroundings.
- Zoe (1/5): Rude hosts. Shame about the cobwebs and hoarding of lost items. - unique building Cobwebs all above the bed to the point it freaked us out and no sleep was had
I left valuable items there and contacted the hosts and they had not responded. Bullet hole in the kitchen window... Homeless people and young teenagers banging on the door. Extremely rude hosts who would not give me my property back ... As it was my "liability". I would avoid staying here if possible.
- Tunnicliffe (10/5): Would recommend as was brilliant place to stay - Was clean comfortable and really nice Location and the amenities
- Baker (9/5): Superb - Well fitted out without disrupting the original form. It's in the middle of the city, it's going to be noisy but once you're closed away this is actually very little distraction.
- Clements1810 (10/5): Exceptional -
- Martin (9/5): Fun building. Old but modern at the same time. - Superb restoration and integration of modern architecture. Loved the modern hammer beam roof in the bedroom. Blinds didnāt work. Draw strings broken or jammed in most rooms. Need replacing with curtains. Minor point but irritating.
- Deborah (8/5): Fabulous property, slightly let down by neighbourhood. - Amazing property. High specification of fixtures and fittings. Characterful. Fabulous location for Coventry 10km/half marathon; literally 200m from finish line The neighbourhood at night is a bit rough. Drug taking in suggested car park. Alcohol and drug taking in immediate area.
Coffee machine but no pods.
- Catalina (9/5): Fabulous - Everything
- Nicola (10/5): Unique and comfortable stay in the centre of Coventry - Lovely clean accommodation
The building is very unique and cosy.
The location is great.... if you don't mind not having parking and having some noise outside. Some nights we could here people shouting and the odd car horn etc but that is to be expected with its location, it didn't spoil our stay.
- Adrian (10/5): A fantastic place to stay. - Everything done to top spec. Very comfortable. Amazing to stay somewhere so steeped in history.
- Grant (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely big old building
- Charlie (9/5): Great for 1 night very central - We loved the property it was stunning and very central beautiful building Very noisy at night with gangs of teens hanging around till late hours in public gardens of house lots of drunks also in gardens till 6am and people waking by banging on door on way home from clubs we did see other reviews saying this so we knew could happen but for just 1 night we knew we could put up with it.
- Grant (10/5): Definitely will be staying there again - It was incredible and loved every single part of it
- Humphreys (10/5): Absolutely awesome - Amazing experience. Very surreal to stay in such a beautiful place of history
- Natalia (8/5): Very good - It was very cool being able to stay in a historic place. The property is very cold because it is so old and has no insulation. The heating in both the living room and kitchen never reached the desired temperature so It would be good to keep the heating on between guests as we had to turn it on when we arrived.
The communication was a bit slow when requiring an early check in.
- Amy (8/5): Very good - We loved that it's right in the city centre and the building is beautiful The heating didn't 100% work and some little things like the sofa was broken and a hole in the kitchen window were disappointing.
- Paul (8/5): Very good - The building was amazing. It was great to stay in a place that old and unique. We have always wanted to see inside, from when we were children
Perfect location
Great set up We paid for late check out, but got woken up with a frightening sound at 10am . Then again at 11am banging on the door on new years day. When we opened the door she demands to come in and we tried to explain we had paid for 1pm check out... she then started arguing with us saying we hadn't paid for late check out! She eventually scuttled off with no apology or explanation. This was very upsetting.
- Joanne (9/5): Great location, comfortable stay steeped in history - Lovely historical venue, sympathetically renovated and restored. Kitchen is well fitted out, bed very comfortable and great bathroom. Located in central Coventry with all amenities in easy walking distance. Easy to get into venue with key code. Heating not as warm as we would have liked in an exceptionally cold spell but team were great at responding to the issue.
- Dave (6/5): Historic Coventry Gatehouse - Period property right in the centre of town Not a warm building. Could have done with preheating the property before arrival. No instructions for the heating of the property.
Chair legs not secured properly. One leg fell off chair .
Warmest place was in the bedroom.
- Kerry (10/5): Exceptional -
- Marc (10/5): Exceptional -
- Neil (8/5): Very good - Quirky Weather vane needs some oil as it was very windy kept waking us up!
- Kevin (10/5): Exceptional - Amazing place hidden gem
- Majid (3/5): Poor - Location Very cold
- Nicole (9/5): Don't just read about history - live in it! - The location was excellent!!
The ability to stay in such a unique and historic building really made my trip to Coventry exciting!
I loved being able to walk through Lady Herbert's Garden and up to the other gate - Cook Street, and appreciate the historical significance of the buildings! I couldn't operate the hot plates/stove top. I did try, but then just used the microwave in the end.
Sadly, being a tourist with suitcases waiting to access the accommodation meant I did have people approaching me and begging.
- Peter (10/5): Exceptional -
- Angelica (1/5): dissatisfied - I liked the design of the apartment, because it is old. Very different for those who like it. We paid for the check-in to be done early, we got there and everything in the apartment was dirty, with sheets and towels in disarray, dishes in the sink; and then people arrived to clean, and they were very quick, the owners did not respond to my message to return my money for the early check-in back, unfortunately we had this situation that was uncomfortable for me and my husband, because it was my birthday.
- Joe (8/5): Brilliant stay, in a beautifully decorated, historic, central building - Loved staying in a piece of history. It's furnished very nicely, in a brilliant location and it's a very atmospheric place to stay. It's clean and tidy and has everything you need. WiFi didn't work but it didn't really bother us.
Curtains on the middle floor would have been nice as it was in a busy location
- Karen (10/5): Exceptional -
- Alastair (1/5): Disappointing that the property hadnāt been cleaned and the previous guest had left it in such a poor state. - Central location It was filthy. Hadnāt been cleaned.
- Helen (6/5): Not what we had hoped for - The property was quirky and the bed was comfortable My husband had to mend a blind in the bedroom which was completely detached from fittings
The couch was crooked
There were old tissues and wrappers under the bedside table
The city nightlife was very noisy
- Irfaan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Gemma (7/5): Good location and fantastic decor - Location was great and the decor was very modern and overall clean. The blinds were broken it was noisy and I didnāt like the amount of homeless people sleeping within the grounds.
- Linda (5/5): An amazing piece of history, but sadly in a grim area of town - Amazing building, beautifully restored Nowhere to park to drop off luggage, so you had to carry it from car park.
Blind in bedroom had been pulled off the wall, and one in bathroom didn't work either. Shower was faulty and sprayed water all over the place.
- Arran (10/5): Exceptional -
- Simon (10/5): Exceptional -
- Trevor (10/5): Exceptional -
- David (4/5): Only stay if sleep not a priority - Central location and unusual building. A coffee machine with no pods. A shower that does not have a temperature that works. No air freshener for loo. The dining room table is incredibly unstable. Very noisy outside from both traffic, nightclub next door & local drunks. Dishwasher stunk and no tablets. No pint pots or large glasses. Rugs on hard surfaces was a hazard
- Simon (8/5): Very good -
- Andrea (6/5): There is no price-comfort relationship. Short period of stay. Too cold. - Im not shore. I feel very coulder in the kitchen especially.
. Even when I turn on the stove because the colder in below the street Dior, and for the Stones walls i think.
The yellow lights bothered me a little.
There could be a light over the bedroom mirror to be able to put on makeup.
It took me a while to figure out the hot water knob in the bathroom. It was spinning non-stop and seemed defeated. Maybe it needs an adjustment.
It seems very expensive to die of cold and then run away during the short time period of the stay.
Enter at 4pm and leave at 11am. I wait 4 hours before entering because they asked me to pay £20 more to enter two hours early.
Luckily I didn't pay for it because I died of cold and it was difficult for me to sleep because of the noise.
I'm 1.55 meters tall but I still hit my head on the stairs. not suitable for tall people.
It was very cold and very noisy because of the people gathering in the square.
I couldn't find another bin to put recyclable waste.
There is a dangerous and broken stove in the bedroom. see the picture.
- Pj (6/5): Never stayed.as there were people dealing drugs outside and verbally abusing us -
- Sindy (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jeanette (8/5): Unique stay lovely property but location let it down as didnāt feel entirely safe - Clean quaint quirky comfortable
Close to bars and restaurants Unique property Privacy .. second floor can wave at people on bus No curtains
Can clearly see people so if we can see them surely they can see us
Same when sitting on toilet
In bedroom at some angles see people on benches in garden
Some very noisy people in Coventry .. shouting both nights sounded aggressive at times Few homeless people around bus station saw one person urinating whilst looking out window
Someone tried to open door when we were in kitchen
- Sarah (9/5): Would recommend āŗļø - Lovely quirky accommodation right in the centre of town. The place was clean and really warm and comfortable āŗļø Could do with a few other kitchen items like kitchen roll or more t towels, but other than that couldn't fault it.
- Philip (9/5): Itās was just brilliant x - Great location - in the city Center - can be a little noisy with people walking by at night but it didnāt bother us - itās a city Center apartment at the end of the day.
Really cool building thatās been beautifully restored Nothing
- Christia (8/5): Who knew how much history Coventry had, our stay definitely made us want to come back. - We loved staying in such a historic building. It was beautifully converted and in a convenient location for the city centre. Parking was a short walk away and Ā£8 for 24 hours. We got back late to find we had no loo roll (Iām guessing it was a bit of an oversight as everything else was well stocked). Also there were only one set of towels for two people. These are the only things I can find wrong, we had a great stay.
- Cherryl (10/5): A must for the history buffs, a truly beautiful place - It was a true piece of history done out with good taste any very sympathetic to its style and age. Felt like a queen for the night. Cold downstairs.
- Sarah (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful building, brilliant location lots of bars and restaurants close by. We were a little disappointed there was no tea and only a couple of coffee sachets left in the kitchen. There was also a pod machine with no pods to use. Luckily the supermarket is only a very short walk from the gatehouse. There was a used kitchen sponge and almost empty washing up liquid left,I felt that should of been changed to new ones or removed.
