Guest Reviews
- Rom (10/5): - One of the best hostels I’ve been in great value per money
- Diana (3/5): Poor - Location Untidy and not clean.
- Zając (5/5): cheap but not są good - stuff was very nice a bit dirty toilet , room had a weird smell
- Wanju (2/5): Very poor -
- Dor (8/5): No competition at this price - There's really no competition to this price for people who would prefer a private room.
The downsides were the bathroom is is always a bit running so it's always a bit wet around.
The commun area was not located considering the wind direction which could very important.
Until you're getting friendly with the owners its kind of weird because you really have to leave around them (staying in the room is not an option after 8, hot).
Other than that, it's a really nice place, close to everything, cheap, well taken care of (Nicaraguan measures) and they let me fo my own laundry for free. Big adventage.
- Katharine (8/5): Very good - Beautiful garden and lovely surroundings, friendly and helpful family owners, basic but good for the price and everything needed. Great for the ferry, very comfortable bed Need ear plugs as music opposite is loud till early hours (it's a shame cos the family do everything they can to make you comfortable). I found the ear plugs did the job though. The room is hard to cool down
- Maïté (7/5): Good - Good value for the price. Close to the ferry. The owner is very friendly. They will help you organise things. I was the only guest there so it was not the most social experience. It did feel a bit awkward at times, like I was intruding on someone's place...
- Sam (7/5): Good - Very very basic but still definitely very good value. 50m from the ferry so is extremely convenient
- Stephen (2/5): I would not stay here again .. I truly cannot imagine what could be worse (except for the location) - Location was close to the ferry but that was the only good thing. It was not clear that the room opened unto the kitchen, the only bathroom was shared with other hostel guests, the hosts, their extended family (approx 15 additional people sleeping on floors, patios, hammocks etc) and restaurant / scooter rental patrons— way too many for one tiny shared bathroom. The shower head, based on other reviews and our experience, has been missing for months and it is a pipe from the wall in a very dark bathroom.
Garbage, including used toilet paper / hygiene paper was left on the ground within feet of a shared patio.
Hard to use shared kitchen as it has two burners only and was also used for the restaurant for breakfast, lunch, dinner and whenever there was a restaurant customer. The fridge and freezer were often unplugged for extended periods of time causing us food safety concerns. It was often in disarray with piles of dirty dishes and food left at room temperature on the counter.
Was asked to pay a 25% !! fee to use the credit card the booking was confirmed with.
- Nuria (8/5): Very good -
- Jeroen (10/5): Exceptional - Esmeralda was really helpful throughout our stay. She is kind and will happily tell you about the different places to visit on the island. She rented us a scooter, but we got some mechanical issues at the waterfall. She resolved the issue while we were visiting the waterfall, and we did not lose any time. The guy who was helping Esmeralda out (I forgot his name) was badmouthing Esmeralda behind her back. Telling us that she didn't pay him and did not want to provide him food. We had the feeling he just wanted us to feel sorry. On our last night, he even asked us for money. But when we offered to buy him bread, he refused, he just wanted money. It's probably best to stop working with him.
- Line (8/5): The host was kind og a arranged a good tour to Conception volcano - The lokation and the room The toilet
- Cécile (10/5): Would recommend this place - The place is very well located, next to the ferry. It is very clean (bathroom was cleaned several times a day), people are nice and gave us many advice on things to see on the island. The outdoor areas are very nice and green. We rented a scooter for 15usd a day and even had a practical lesson because it was our first time driving it. Do not hesitate to go there!
- Pascual (6/5): Paying for convenience can cost you in the end. - The property was a short walk from the ferry landing. When arriving late as I did this is very convenient. It is located on the main street lined with restaurants, shops, and rental places. The property itself rents scooters. The same person who owns the property owns Little Nathaly next door who rents scooters. The room gets very hot because no ventilation. There was one small window in my room that couldn’t be opened fully because the window drapes were placed in front of the window opening and not above it, blocking the opening. You are provided a fan, but not enough to cool the room. You share the one bathroom with the family who lives on the property so a lot of their personal items are in the bathroom. The shower head is wrapped in a tshirt to keep the water from being sprayed away from the shower area. I guess the head is broken and rather then get it replaced, they have decided to go about it this way. Which seems unsanitary. The bathroom is dark specially when you close the shower curtain because there is only only one light outlet. I guess water service for that part of the island stopped and I wasn’t communicated this. There was very little communication between myself and the family there. I woke up and no water what so ever. It was then I decided to change locations where water was available because they had a tank and good water pressure. Honestly, pay a little more and enjoy the small comforts like running water, clean bathrooms, and we’ll thought out rooms and shared spaces. Also, be careful renting from the place next they look for any little bit of scratch on the scooter to charge you for it. Keep in mind some of the roads on the island are rocky and not in good shape. Also, when filling up at the gas station up street they will cheat you if you don’t pay attention to the meter as happened to me. I remember seeing C48, and I handed the attendant a C100 and I received c3 back. I know I didn’t use a full liter as I didn’t do very far. When I asked about this he played dumb and for what’s it’s worth I just didn’t feel like arguing for basically $1.50. When I brought this up to the person at Little Nathaly, part of Casa Esmeralda, they didn’t care and said it is what it is. She said it’s something he does. So much for being good advocates for your guests.
- Alisa (9/5): My recommendation for a stay in Moyogalpa! - Esmeralda is a lovely person, who puts a lot of effort & work in this building & takes great care of her visitors. She teached me in driving a scooter & gave me recommendations for my next travel destination. The chill-out area was super comfortable & the bathroom was always clean.
- Alyona (10/5): Exceptional - The location is great, less than 100 meters from the port. The room is clean and comfortable, shared kitchen and bathroom. The family is very nice and friendly, always ready to help. The wifi is good too. Definitely recommend Casa Esmeralda if you’re staying on this side of the island.
- Nataliya (10/5): Wonderful stay, highly recommend! - Our stay in Ometepe was absolutely wonderful, thanks to Esmeralda. She went above and beyond to assist us with every aspect of our visit. From meeting us at the ferry station in pouring rain to arranging transportation for our large luggage. Esmeralda even took the initiative to find and book a guide for our Volcano hike, as well as assisting us in planning other activities on the island.
Esmeralda also rents motorbikes, which we would highly recommend to use. It’s very handy to use on the island, and give you some independence. Also, would be way cheaper than the taxi. Despite our lack of experience with motorbikes, Esmeralda patiently explained everything, helped us with practice, and guided us through Ometepe's challenging capital roads. She truly made our motorbike experience enjoyable and safe.
Moreover, noticed my injured leg, she offered to arrange for an osteopath and even went the extra mile to pick him up, allowing me to receive treatment in the comfort of the accommodation. Also, we even got a help with washing and drying out dirty clothes after the hike. We travel a lot and I don’t think we ever had such a great assistance while having so many issues anywhere else.
On top of everything, the accommodations were delightful, with well-maintained and charming surroundings, a spacious common area, and a lovely garden. We wholeheartedly recommend to stay at Esmeralda’s. No
- Abby (10/5): Central location. Friendly staff. Excellent food. Great value for money! - I would highly recommend staying at Casa Esmeralda, I couldn’t rate it high enough! The location is perfect, it is in the centre of Moyogalpa, it takes 3 mins to walk when you get off the ferry and there is a supermarket, ATM & banks just up the road. The staff are so incredibly friendly and accommodating. I wasn’t feeling 100% and they offered to go to the pharmacy for me, they even made me a hot tea to help settle my stomach (it’s these kind of gestures that really make a place special). The food is also honestly amazing - it is the best that I have had since arriving in Nicaragua. The room was a little hot to sleep in (but I feel the heat), the fan provided is definitely adequate. The shower pressure is good and staff are constantly cleaning the property. It is great value for money!!! Thank you again everyone at Casa Esmeralda ❤️
- Camille (8/5): Perfect location in Moyogalpa - The bedroom had a good size, the bed was comfortable, and there was even a dresser, so you can empty your backpack/suitcase if you plan on staying multiple nights.
Perfect location in Moyogalpa: it is right by the ferry, on the main street where you will find all the commodities. The location couldn't be better!
The restaurant serves the best food in Moyogalpa, for the best prices too!
They also have a tour/rental desk so they can help you book activities, rent a scooter, etc.
They provided me with a towel and my own bar of soap.
Strong wifi throughout the property. The bathroom is shared with the other guests and the family who lives there, so it can be busy at times.
Small improvement: When I got there, I wasn't sure where the place was. I didn't see a sign. Maybe I just missed it? Following the directions on the map, I asked the people at the restaurant and they told me I was at the right place ☺️
