Guest Reviews
- Barry (10/5): -
- Steve (9/5): Nice quiet stay - Nice quiet stay. Hosts were very friendly and knowledgeable on local area. Room was large and had 2 seater sofa, which was a nice touch as not always sitting on bed when in room.
- Christopher (8/5): Very good -
- Sally (7/5): Good -
- Nicola (10/5): Great position a little out of the hustle and bustle of the town but on a regular bus route. - We liked the room. It was very cool with 3 windows given a through draught. There was plenty of room for storage. The shower was good and the bed comfortable. Only the sea gulls but I don’t think the Hotel can be blamed for that!
- Caroline (10/5): Summer
in Somerton - John & Ann were very welcoming and cheerfully attended to their guests each day.
The hotel itself is in a good location with free parking and local shops, restaurants and beach within easy walking distance. The en suite bedroom was clean, comfortable and quiet and kindly made-over daily. Cooked breakfasts, ordered the day before, were generous and tasty, served with a smile in the large dining room with pleasant music in the background. There is a comfortable double length sitting room for guests downstairs and a cosy reading area on the upstairs landing overlooking the garden. We were impressed to see the photo book showing how much work John and Ann had done to renovate the place when they took it on! You've done a great job - a lovely cosy hotel. Everything was fine. There were roadworks directly outside the gate on arrival but that was out of their control, did not impede access and had moved within a day or two. I would have loved to have been able to reach the delicious-looking blackberries and plums in the back garden but perhaps that's a plan for a later date.
- Anonymous (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sue (8/5): Good place to stay. - Comfortable room on first floor. Good breakfast. Bedside lamps offered poor light - no good for reading.
- Ian (10/5): Friendly, homely B&B close to all amenities - Lovely B&B close to the town centre, a short walk to the shops, restaurants/cafes and bus stops and about 15 mins walk from the railway station. My room was clean and comfortable with a nice wide-opening window and large wardrobe. The small ensuite had an excellent shower which is really important to me. There was a good choice of breakfast and everything I had was tasty (and hot if cooked). There is a large lounge with comfy chairs and benches outside in the garden, both of which I took advantage of. I noticed there are 5 downstairs rooms which would suit someone with reduced mobility. There was nothing I was unhappy with.
- Leonora (10/5): A wonderful week in a very homely property run by lovely people. - Alcohol free property. Lovely owners Ann and John. Nothing was too much trouble. We had breakfast
option and it was fresh and hot daily. Nothing to dislike.
- Jonathan (8/5): Very good -
- Robert (9/5): Superb - Quite location informative host, Breakfast was good but a little pricey, did have the option to take it on daily basis, which was OK
- Anonymous (10/5): Fantastic. 10/10. Would love to stay here again. - Fantastic. 10/10. Would love to stay here again. Great breakfast, perfect location and very comfortable. Great room that was well equipped and immaculately clean. Nothing.
- Kuukx (9/5): Short stay in Shanklin - The owners were a really lovely couple who went the extra mile to ensure their guests were comfortable, well fed and well informed about the area. Made my holiday thoroughly enjoyable.
- Andy (10/5): I really enjoyed staying there. -
- Lynne (9/5): Superb -
- Julie (8/5): Nice quiet stay in a very central location - Central location to all amenities & to explore the rest of the Island. There is a bus stop right outside if you’re not driving. Secure parking, very quiet and spacious comfortable room made for a good night’s sleep. Breakfast was great and is all cooked to order, so very fresh & not sitting around in a warmer for ages! The hosts were lovely & we would definitely recommend Somerton Lodge Nothing
- Marta (6/5): Pleasant stay in a good location - Location, comfortable bed, attentative owners Having read the reviews before booking, I expected breakfast to be a bit better (better quality/local produce used). The room was comfortable but in a need of updating (if possible in the future) so does the dining area.
It would be good to allocate space in the dining room for juices, musli, cereals, yoghurts, sauces so guests can help themselves to them. It would save some time I think to serve and also everyone can decide on their portions which is not possible now.
- Gillian (7/5): Good - The location was good. The staff were friendly. We thought, from the photo, that we were going to somewhere with extensive grounds. It's actually a front garden on the photo, and in real life it wasnt very impressive. We also thought we'd booked a big room. We had two single beds and just enough room to walk round the beds, nothing else.
- Richard (7/5): Nice room nice breakfast nice Hosts.shame about the garden - The house was lovely The bathroom was very small , the garden was not cared for so the picture on Booking .com is very deceiving
- Steve (10/5): Good value - Location All good
- Eija (8/5): Peaceful mini break exactly as we wished for. - Charming, clean and friendly hotel in a quiet but convinient location. Plentiful breakfast in a spacious dining room. N/A
- Elaine (5/5): Very disappointing the photos give a false impression - Comfortable bed, good nights sleep Having to preorder breakfast and then the bacon was like cardboard and clearly wasn’t fresh
- Pereira (9/5): Superb - It was good to stay All was ok
- Sharron (5/5): Not comfortable, wouldn’t stay here again - The lounge area was nice The room was very basic with badly painted furniture over the top of laminate. The mattress was very shallow and uncomfortable. The shower is so tiny you could hardly turn around, the sink had a crack in it which had been badly filled and still leaked. The bathroom smelt damp.
- Steve (8/5): Comfortable stay with very friendly owners - Clean and very well kept Nothing
- Geoff (9/5): Thoroughly enjoyable,we will be back. - Everything was spot on One very minor point more breakfast options would be nice like more fresh fruit and an option of self service cereals but I have to say the breakfast we had was very good.
- Anonymous (9/5): Superb -
- Anthony (9/5): Superb -
- Brett (9/5): Superb -

Nice breakfast in a lovely dining room with a garden view. Perfect. Thank you for hosting us. n/a
- Anonymous (8/5): good parking comfortable room good breakfast - everything nothing
- Anonymous (10/5): great stay easy to get anywhere by car. But public transport was also no problem. - the breakfast was great could not fault it. Tea and coffee making in room also good,if stock got low they would fill it up.
Plus getting about either by car or walking was very easy. if i had a grumble it would be about matress on bed as we prefer a harder one than what was on our bed, but that is just us.
Apart from that everything was A OK.
- Helen (10/5): Perfect hosts in a lovely hotel - Perfect spot in a lovely hotel with the most wonderful attentive hosts..Lovely stay! not applicable
- Mark (8/5): Very good -
- Napat (10/5): Wonderful! - The staffs were super friendly and went above and beyond to ensure that you get the most out of your trip to Isle of Wight. The neighbourhood was quiet and great for relaxing after a long day of travelling. The bathroom sink might have been a bit too small.
- On (8/5): Very good -
- Emily (9/5): Very comfortable and felt very welcomed - Lovely and welcoming receptionist. Room and bed very comfortable and great accessible location. Not their fault but internet not great.
- Searle (9/5): Superb - Superb hosts, lovely premise and a great location !!. Nothing, apart from I was too tall for the bed 😊

- Shelley (8/5): Very good - Welcome was warm, breakfast was excellent. Mattress was a bit uncomfortable.
- Tracy (10/5): Excellent place to stay, comfortable, affordable and close to beach. - We loved the cooked full English breakfast. The room was clean and minimal but had everything we needed. Lovely shower. The building was characteristic and well kept. Lovely sitting rooms. Good parking and within walking distance to all places to visit in Shanklin. The bed was a little uncomfortable. Also no heating in bathroom so everything was damp after shower.

- Michael (10/5): Exceptional -
- Barry (8/5): Very good -

The room was perfect for our stay on the island.Breakfast was excellent and it was nice to chat to our hosts and find out the various hints to do on the island. We would recommend Somerton Lodge for a peaceful stay on the island.
The trains on the island were not running due to an upgrade but the bus service is excellent and the bus stops right outside of Somerton. Excellent location and the Crab pub is a ten minute walk away to get an evening meal. We loved it thanks John and Anne Nothing it was perfect.

- Laura (5/5): The bathroom door did not close properly. The walls were very thin. We could hear the people in the next room, snoring. - The location was good and the staff there were friendly Basic
- Martin (10/5): Very relaxing. - The owners delightful and very kind. Very clean and good breakfasts. The handbasin being very small makes it a bit difficult to use.

- Niechel (10/5): Somerton Lodge - The place is very nice and cosy. The room is clean and I have everything that I needed for a short comfortable stay. The owner was very welcoming and pleasant to talk to.
- Rodney (10/5): Home! -
- Hilary (9/5): Came up to expectations, ideal for a short break, what little we saw of the staff theyseemed very ni - Nice breakfast, very clean, easy parking, good location for restaurants and easy access to all parts of the island As we were only there for a short time we found nothing to dislike.
- Morrison (9/5): It was very pleasant and we woould love to go back. - The room was good, the breakfast was good and the staff were very accomodating. Whatever we asked for we got. The Managers were extremely pleasant and friendly. They were so honest and although we didnt have a full breakfast every day they charged us less, which we appreciated. Nothing.
- Robert (10/5): We had a wonderful time using Somerton Lodge as a base for our visits to all parts of the Island. - Very clean, nothing was too much bother for the staff, very friendly and informative. Nothing
- Sue (8/5): Location due to staying on an island was fair. Disappointed in the town but lots of nice places to e - Breakfast was good would have liked more choice of fruit but it was certainly adequate
Hosts were pleasant and helpful
- Steve (5/5): Not impressed - The room was clean as was the bathroom facilities including towels. The shower was very small and difficult to comfortably use. The room was very noisy at times we could hear conversations and activities in the adjacent rooms. One of the most annoying issues was the fact we were charged 2 different prices for breakfast. The first charge was completed on our arrival date at the price on the Web site and our booking confirmation. The second charge was completed by the manager on the Wednesday and we were charged a higher price than that stated on the Web Site. When challenged the manager informed me the price had gone up. I returned to my room and checked the Web site to find it was still showing the lower price of £10. I brought this to the managers attention and he did not even respond just walked away. We did not think this was acceptable as the price should remain the same as the quote at time of booking. Additionally we had the same standard of breakfast on the second occasion with people in the dinning room that booked breakfast at the lower price on their arrival. We did not do this because we did not know what plans we had for the rest of the week on arrival. We were informed we could book breakfast the night before for the next day. Very immoral practices demonstrated by the manager.
- Gotia (8/5): We felt comfortable and relaxed. - We had a lovely stay at Somerton Lodge, as we felt very relaxed, had a good sleep, and nice breakfast. Also, having parking space is always a bonus. We can’t say there was something not to like about.
- Antony (9/5): Superb -
- Maggie (9/5): Comfortable - We didn’t have breakfast Considering how bad the Weather was it was a shame there wasn’t a licensed bar
- Rihan (9/5): Superb - Anne was truly hospitable and a very warm and caring host.
Our family enjoyed our stay
- Paul (10/5): Everything was just perfect - The house is beautiful. Room was better than we thought we would be in. Bed very comfy. Would have loved to have tried the breakfast but we had lots to do on the island so just didn’t have the time. N/A
- Cecily (9/5): Superb - Ideally situated for our trip. We could come & go as we pleased.
- Elizabeth (9/5): Superb - A friendly welcome .Ann and John couldnt do enough for us. A lovely fresh cooked breakfast. A peacful and calm place.
- Neil (8/5): Comfortable affordable hotel , excellent location! - Good location, friendly helpful staff, delicious breakfast, affordable rates, Nothing.
- Sherie (7/5): Rooms were cleaned every day and owners were friendly and informative of the area , which was lovely - I really didn’t enjoy the fried breakfast , it seemed as if it was microwaved though on talking to the lovely friendly owner it hadn’t, and had been air fried .
The rest was good and we were catered for as my son is vegan and I’m veggie . breakfast
- Helen (9/5): Excellent location, beautiful building. Shanklin is gorgeous - Beautiful building and garden. Spacious modern room about 15 minute walk from the beautiful old town Nothing except it would have been great if breakfast was included.
- John (8/5): Excellent holiday good location and we would stay there again. - Breakfast was very good (excellent scrambled egg) Room very clean and comfortable. Any thing we needed we just had to ask. John and Ann were very helpful, accommodating and informative of local amenities. Not a complaint but the breakfast usually has a self service for cereal, juice, yoghurt etc and not having to order it. Although the bedroom was clean and comfortable it would benefit from an update.
- Tetiana (8/5): Very good -
- Jane (6/5): Ok but disappointed - The gardens and communal areas are beautiful and comfortable. The reviews are so good I have to assume I was just unlucky with my room. I was disappointed that the room I was given was not one of those reflected in the photos showing my options on the booking site when I booked. Perhaps this might be the room assigned to solo travellers who prefer a double room as it was small and felt boxy to me? There was one small window on a restrictor which opened no more than my hand width which had no view other than the building next door and was under the drive with resultant noise disturbance. This leads to the biggest issue with the room. Soundproofing with the next room is non existent. Indeed their bathroom was behind my bed head and having to listen to both bathroom and toilet noises was really unpleasant, and also able to hear the conversations from that room. Also, there is not a charging socket nearby the bed as stated on the booking site but across the room. I would make sure that you ensure you are not given room 8.
