Guest Reviews
- Annette (9/5): Fabulous - Fantastic hospitality. We were picked up from the station. We stayed 2 nights. The first night we had amazing vegetarian food and second night we had a fabulous kaiseki banquet. Both prepared by our host’s son.

- Dennis (9/5): Charm, peace and tranquility. - Located on the grounds of a historic temple, this charming, somewhat remotely located, ryokan provided scenic beauty, peace, tranquility and excellent food. Our room was spacious and comfortable with balconies overlooking the beautiful grounds. Staff picked us up promptly at the designated location and drove us there up the steep and windy road. We plan to return during future travels.
- Michaela (10/5): Wonderful and peaceful experience - What can I say? This Ryokan was even better than how I’d pictured it. It’s hidden in a forest surrounded by nature and peacefulness. I even had a view from my room of the beautiful three story pagoda.
The food is excellent and dinner comes in courses and beautifully presented like fine food (I chose the mostly vegetarian option), eaten in the private dining rooms with big windows to see the nature. The hot bath (not a true hot spring) has a schedule in evening and is freely available in the morning. I took a relaxing bath both morning and evening.
It was exactly what I needed to get away from the hustle of the cities and recover from work stress.
The owners are very kind, with one of them I was able to communicate a bit in English. I walked from the nearest train station there, which took me a bit under 1.5 hours. As I enjoy walking and the countryside is beautiful it wasn’t a problem, but it’s something to be mindful of, as there is no bus and the only other option is a taxi. Nothing negative to say other than that I wish I could have stayed longer!
- Ute (10/5): Quite and quaint place away from any hustle - Lovely veggie / veggie with fish breakfast and dinner. Ryokan situated next to a shrine in a rather remote area. Very quite and quaint.
We loved that it is located out of the way without other facilities nearby.
- Sandra (9/5): Wonderful stay! - This stay was a memorable one: the surroundings are really unique, with the temple just in front of the Ryokan and a large area to explore all the little details that this beautiful place has to offer. What made the stay even more memorable were the people who hosted us in the Ryokan, such hospitality and attention to our needs. The kindness of our hosts was touching. The meals they prepared for us were the most authentic and delicious Japanese food. And to soak in the bath and relax after a day exploring the area was just perfect! This is a place I strongly recommend to those who really want to experience Japan and the ways of Japanese culture, hospitality and food.
- Daniel (10/5): Exceptional - A truly beautiful place to stay. The food was beyond anything that we had hoped for. The owners were very lovely and helpful. You are so close to the amazing temple that you can explore it with no one else around
- Jeff (10/5): A very unique experience not to be missed. - This is a gem in the mountains not to be missed. There was tea and a snack waiting for us every afternoon in our room. We could see the beautifully carved temple and gardens from our room window. The meals were delicious! Many little dishes to make your mouth water served in our private dining room by the hosts who were exceedingly polite and friendly and explained what everything was. The baths could be taken privately with a partner. The bath was very clean as were the accommodations. A short hike to the top of the mountain gave beautiful views of the ocean and the Daisen volcanic mountain. This also went by the beautiful temple, which offers meditation sessions. There were two small stores nearby selling delicious sweets nearby. We cannot say enough good things about kouyoukan ryokan and it's hosts! A wonderful place to slow down and relax. Everything exceeded expectations and could not have been better.
- Tania (10/5): Serenity and comfort. - Truly special experience in a serene setting. Wonderful hosts who care for every detail to ensure a comfortable stay.
- Sarah (10/5): Wonderful, most welcoming experience - Everything was amazing. The food was exceptional, the service and hospitality were outstanding, the room was very large and beautiful and I really regret that I had to leave again. Next time I will surely stay longer!
I don’t speak any Japanese but everybody was really kind and polite and took good care of me.
It exceeded my expectations by far! There was nothing to dislike (apart from having to leave again)
- Ana (9/5): Superb - The experience of going to a temple and staying there.
The diner and breakfast where like something I never tried before, it was really incredible food. service was very good, hotel staff came to pick us up at the entrance of the temple.
- Andrew (10/5): Amazing location for a peaceful stay - Ryokan Koyokan Is a rare find set in an amazing forest location alongside the Kiyomizu-dera temple. We loved the absolute peace and quiet after a few hectic days in some of Japan’s big cities. The Ryokan is run by three generations of the same family, with the first member of the fourth generation a recent addition. Food is an amazing combination of mainly vegetarian dishes with some fish. Nearest railway station is at Yasugi from where you can get a taxi. We opted though to hire a car at Matsue Station for the half hour drive, this also meant easy travel to the nearby Adachi Museum of Art. Definitely recommend Koyokan for a relaxing experience in an amazing location. Nothing. Everything was perfect.
- Salvatore (9/5): Superb -
- Patschuli (10/5): Exceptional - It was like an Oasis for soul and body. The food was delicious and vegetarian! It is so quiet and calm and the owner are the nicest people! We will definitely come back. That we had to leave.
- Ulrik (9/5): Superb -
- Eriko (10/5): The hotel is a bit inconvenient location from Yasugi but worth to stay. The very king service and room, and meals are e - room, hot spring public bath , service, food , location nothing
- John (10/5): Memorable, great value, incredible experience. - Absolutely stunning experience staying at Koyokan Ryokan. Amazing meals and delightful family service (4 generations!). Would love to return. Nothing I did not rate fantastically. Almost reluctant to rate so high in case it gets "discovered".
- Mariana (10/5): Exceptional -
- Thomas (10/5): Exceptional - Everything, the food, the room, the environment. Perfect. Nothing
