• John (8/5): Form over function? - Great location. Wonderfully modern and attractive. Very quiet due to sound proofing. Silly semi visibility glass on the doors on toilet which was certainly not a selling point.There are no parking facilities so please be prepared to park on the street.

Noting that it is a pub, I experienced no noise on the Saturday night I stayed. Comfy bed. Friendly staff A couple of very minor things. A box of tissues wouldn't have gone astray. Special mention to John H who checked us in a really nice human - This is not just a pub.. the menu and food is exceptional , my husband loved the crispy skin barra and I had the salt and pepper squid..The staff were so helpful. The bed was so comfortable. Definitely recommend.

• Sara (10/5): Great quality, affordable accommodation close to range of places to eat and the beach. - Very funky, comfortable rooms with large, well-equipped bathroom and large, fluffy towels. Location is great, several coffee shops on the same street, and Grumpy Baker directly across the road. Parking is fairly easy on streets close by. Amazingly quiet, despite being above a pub. Would have liked to be able to open the windows, but then it would have been noisy, of course!

Location is superb with great cafe and restaurants in vicinity. Food at the hotel was excellent. Room was clean, a nice standard and the bed was excellent. The after hours entry/exit area is a little grubby and could do with a tidy up.

• Kathy (1/5): Humiliating & offensive room. Why is the door transparent when the light in the bathroom is on? - I found this room offensive & unacceptable. A Bizarre door to the bathroom that was mirrored but completely transparent when the light was on & looking directly into the toilet from all angles of the room. Being a very widely traveled person I have never seen anything like this & I found this very strange & quite perverted. There was no privacy what so ever & even if you turned the light out ( which meant you could not see what you were doing) the door would slide open by itself, so again no privacy. No one I have ever met wants to watch someone going to the toilet & doing their business. I don’t understand why or to what purpose they would have a door such as this. There was no warning about this when we booked the room or anything said to us by the manager till I mentioned it to him. He just said to me that he didn’t know why it was like it but room Number 8 was worse. I wrote ‘what we didn’t like about this property’ in the above question. I had no idea about the transparent door to the bathroom/ toilet until I came out of the bathroom & my husband told me he could see me on the toilet. I think this is humiliating & offensive so would never recommend this hotel to anyone I would absolutely advise against it.

A small personal thing only - an aspect of lighting that is warm, not just white light - bedside bulbs or other, and one brighter light for room. But that's just me 😃

• Sucq (9/5): Funkied up JH is a great place to stay for a short visit In Merewether. - This quirky room was huge and very comfortable and the bed was great. Shower worked really well. The TV and interrnet worked really well without any hastle. Ours was a super private room at the end of the hall. It ticks the Boutique box very well. Air con was excellent but needed to be because of the almost windowless position. The bars and restaurants downstairs were fabulous. Super trendy and very popular. I would go back again. Unfortunately the tiny fridge did not suit our needs and there was no toaster (OH&S issue in an almost windowless room I think?) The lights in the hallway certainly were quirky. Not sure I liked them, but they were fun. After hours exit and entry by the back door was not fun, but OK. Perhaps clean up the smokers area that we had to walk through.

We were greeted and showed to our room and where we can enter and exit after hours etc. the room was spotless, spacious and comfortable. No road or street noise. Short stroll to the beach or Derby st. All the staff were super friendly and the food was delicious and well presented. 10/10. Our first time to Newcastle

They didn't just give me a key and tell me what room I was in - the gentleman took my bag and walked me to my room, then personally escorted me around the facility to show me the entries, exits, etc. Everything was great.

The clear shower was interesting, the shower was actually wonderful but just make sure you are staying in the room with someone who you want to watch in the shower and/or you don’t mind watching you. Our room was also very compact.
