Guest Reviews
- Sheila (10/5): - The historic ambience of the homestead was really appreciated in a fine garden setting. The accommodation was first rate and in the grand style. The hosts made us feel like honoured guests. We rate this bed and breakfast as one of the best in all our travels both in Australia and overseas.
- Julianne (10/5): Thoroughly enjoyable. - Wonderful stay. Bed was comfortable. Everything was clean. Our hostess was kind and friendly. Breakfast was fresh and delightful. Just a beautiful property to stay at. Thank you. Nothing
- jane (9/5): Lovely hosts in an amazing, untouched historic home. -
- Christine (7/5): Booked on PayPal but no one was there when we arrived -
- Nicholas (10/5): Stay in this property and it will linger in your memory for many years and encourage a repeat visit. - This is a remarkable property for the discerning traveller. A house and family with an interesting history, a warm welcome by the owners and delightful insight into local farming and community, excellent breakfast and impressive gardens. Some might find some of the facilities old-fashioned but others, like ourselves, were intrigued and impressed. Christmas decorations still up in mid January!
- Susan (3/5): Do not recommend! - Unfortunately, the reviews are highly misleading as I found the property dirty and disappointing.
The musty, overly furnished rooms from the front verandah all the way through were full of personal mementos and clutter.
Historical does not equal shabby!
From the many throw rugs covering the badly stained carpets to the frayed and perished curtains and blinds in the bedroom, the ingrained dust and grime and total lack of attention to detail were most off-putting.
The greasy mirrors and old, smelly ashes in the grate from a long-gone fire in the billiards room were not conducive to spending any time at all in this space.
I appreciate the owners want to maintain some of the historical features of the property, especially in the bathroom, but the whole wing needs a thorough cleaning and airing.
While the fruit salad provided was nice, the much raved about continental breakfast was no different from what you’d find in any other place.
I suggest the owners travel and stay in other similarly priced accommodation to see what is available and how these properties are professionally presented and maintained.
- Paul (10/5): Great stay -the best hosts -

- Ingrid (10/5): Lovely! - Merryville Homestead is an amazing place, full of history. Ning is a great host and provided an amazing breakfast. The room was very comfortable and the property itself is just beautiful. We recommend a visit for anyone that is interested in staying in a historic building with a great host. Thank you Ning and Rob! Nothing really, all comforts were provided
- Alan (10/5): - This is a special place steeped in history that you see & feel. Ning & Rob are fabulous hosts, caring and very generous with their time. It is an absolute treat staying here, so unique in such a beautiful setting, it feels a world away from the hustle & bustle. Allow enough time to take a leisurely stroll around the gardens & paddocks. A wonderful experience. No dislikes

- Mark (10/5): Brilliant piece of history. We’re all lucky that the owners share such a wonderful property - The fire place, wasn’t advertised it a wonderful surprise. Just been to the snow and most places didn’t have one or it was a fake
- Philippa (9/5): Stayed here on friend’s recommendation, and it didn’t disappoint. - Historical, interesting homestead surrounded by beautiful gardens. Friendly hosts who treated us like royalty.
- William (9/5): Lovely historic property in beautiful country setting - Lovely historic property in beautiful country setting. Great hosts.
- R1 (10/5): Ning and Rob ensured our stay was a memorable one... - A superb breakfast, not to missed. Nothing.
- Krystie (9/5): Fabulous stay - Staff were such beautiful, friendly people. Very hospitable. Enjoyed our continental breakfast which included fresh fruit bowl that was delicious!
Loved the historic atmosphere.
It was so quiet and peaceful. We were even lucky to see lambs.
It had a pool table which we didn’t realise, so that was great. Not enough hot water. Had a bath and ran out only half way through filling it.
Colder than I expected, but they had heaters in various rooms to help with that.
- David (10/5): Beautiful and relaxing in an old world atmosphere - Beautiful location and relaxed atmosphere and the Hosts were very welcoming N/A
- Izzy (9/5): Grand old homestead set in beautiful surrounds. - Beautiful old homestead. So much history! Very peaceful and set in stunning gardens. Very friendly hosts as well.
- Valerie (10/5): Like staying in a stately home, wish we’d had more time - Amazing vintage property in fabulous surroundings . Loads of private space inside and lovely gardens. Nice breakfast and lovely hosts Nothing
- Alison (10/5): Wonderful stay - The most beautiful, serene, and welcoming B&B I have ever stayed at. The hosts were exceptional and made me feel right at home. The facilities were perfect and you wanted for nothing.
- John (10/5): Exceptional - Excellent all round with great hosts Ning and Rob
- Oliver (10/5): Awesome experience - a journey into Australia's past - I was on my way from Mount Gambier to Newcastle and had chosen the Merryville for my overnight stay. What a lovely experience. When I arrived, I was greeted very warmly by Rob, one of the hosts. The property itself is massive, with history looking at you from every corner. Basically, as a guest you get the whole west wing of the building with among other things two bedrooms and a sepate bathroom. If you only need one bedroom, the other one stays emtpy so you don't need to share the bathroom with strangers. Maybe that is not explicitly mentioned in the description but important to many people. The surroundings are very quiet, so I had a great night's sleep. The next morning, before my departure, Ning prepared a very nice braekfast with yoghurt, muesli, fresh fruit, coffee & tea, toast, jam and other condiments. I had a great time. Definitely recommend. Nothing really, the fact that the place is remote is something I could have known, had I read the description properly. Maybe it could be stressed out a bit more. If you want snacks and alcoholic drinks, get it before you arrive at the Merryville. A fridge is provided.
- Ian (10/5): most enjoyable visit to a working farm, historic original home and charming garden. - The rural ambiance, historical significance to the region. Original period and regional presentation of the home offers a step back in time to a less stressful lifestyle.
- Brian (2/5): Very poor -
- William (10/5): A wonderful stay on a historic working farm with lovely hosts. - This is a fantastic place, a large working farm that traces its lineage to a world-class breeder of Merino sheep, good enough at his chosen profession to be knighted. Ron and Ning are wonderful, warm people who ensured that I felt welcomed and lacked for nothing. Nothing.
- Danny (10/5): If you want a peaceful, supportive, historic weekend away, this is it. - A beautiful historic property with warm hosts, a comfy bed, quietness. Nothing
- V (9/5): Seeped in History Heritage, Peaceful and Delightful Stay - If you are looking for serenity, comfy interiors, abundant heritage and history and an amazing flora and avian company, this is the place to be. Ning and Rob are a warm couple who host you with the perfect hospitality. Rob was kind enough to share his most fascinating stories and experiences that kept us asking for more. Ning served us a wonderful breakfast that sealed our stay at the Homestead. Our seven year old enjoyed exploring the manicured gardens and backyard that are full of antique paraphernalia; indeed a fantastic glimpse into the Classical World. The wonderful property is a perfect getaway for tourists and visitors. Must visit for those looking to get away from the tourist hustle bustle and looking for an offbeat retreat. Everything was just as we wanted it to be
- Jackie (10/5): My stay was perfect, with a rich heritage, peaceful surroundings, and a warm, welcoming family, plus a delightful breakf - I couldn’t fault a single thing about my stay. The heritage of the homestead, along with the peaceful walks around the property, created a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere. The continental breakfast was a delightful surprise, far beyond just cereal and toast. The family was incredibly welcoming and made us feel right at home. I’ll definitely be back. Thank you Rob and Ning.
- Hb1111 (9/5): Superb - The breakfast was simple but lovely in the large dining room. Ning and Rob are lovely hosts. The property is amazing and full of treasures The bathroom is in original condition. Not too bad but not ideal
- Rushford (9/5): Superb -
- Ben (10/5): A unique historic property. Host Ning is warm & welcoming while giving us privacy. Will stay again:) -
- Wendy (10/5): Highly recommend this as a special place to stay - Fabulous host.
Wonderful location.
Very comfortable bed, elegant facilities, lovely breakfast.
Highly recommend.
- Kristina (10/5): Delightful hosts who were helpful in every way. - We loved the historic building. The gardens were lush with beautiful shade trees. The bedroom was comfortable, the dining room was set with nice china and the billiard room was nice.
- Gail (10/5): Exceptional -
- Olivia (10/5): Beautiful old estate - Really enjoyed our stay. Ning and rob were very welcoming and attentive hosts. The place was very clean and comfortable. The breakfast was a lovely touch. Thank you
- Thomas (10/5): Exceptional -
- Luke (10/5): Wonderful retreat - Hosts were friendly, room was very complete. It felt like we were staying somewhere that was part of the local history. It would have been nice to be able to use the billiard table.
- Michael (8/5): Very good -
- Therese (10/5): The peaceful, calmness & history of Merryville made our stay one of fond memories - Our breakfast was made extra special by the setting of the most beautiful crockery & cutlery placed in the magnificent dining area. A freshly made fruit salad was an extra delicious touch. That we personally couldn't stay longer. There was nothing we didn't like.
- Graham (8/5): Really enjoyable 'different' experience. - Beautiful location, set in the magnificent counryside on an historic country property.
Olde-worlde charm, huge rooms, high ceilings and a billiard room were the standouts in our 'wing'.
We felt very welcomed by the delightful hosts who treated us to a lovely glass of wine as we sat on the huge verandah looking down the rather grand drive to the house.
After a very comfortable nights sleep in the incredibly quiet room we were treated to an expansive continental breakfast with local fresh bread, jersey cow's milk and a proper 'Nespresso' coffee to start the day.
If you're after a glimpe of Australia's genteel country life you won't be disappointed with a stay here.
We just stayed overnight on our way from Melbourne to Sydney but I'd recommend staying a few more days to really soak up the atmosphere. Top marks if you're looking for something different with a bit of substance! Just a word of warning, the road from the main raod to the property has some stretches with large pot-holes so drive with a bit of caution.
- Stephen (10/5): Exceptional -
- Rod (9/5): Superb - Fantastic welcoming hosts and amazing property
- Ian (10/5): Exceptional -
- Roy (10/5): A most enjoyable and relaxing place to stay. Would recommend it as a great historic property to stay - Excellent Nothing
- Kaye (8/5): Very good -
- Denis (5/5): Lots of potential to be much better - Wonderful welcome from the hosts. Quality breakfast provided. The "attraction" of this venue was staying in a heritage homestead that had a high rating in Booking.com The homestead is in need of quite some work to bring it up to a standard that would justify a 9.2 rating.
No need to change the elements that make it "heritage" but replacement of floor coverings, some fresh paint and some decluttering in the bedroom we used, and replacement of bathroom equipment and fittings (whilst maintaining the heritage style) would contribute to a stay being much more enjoyable.
- Mikael (10/5): Exceptional -
