Guest Reviews
- William (10/5): -
- Andrew (10/5): - Everything
Hosts could not do enough to assist in any way
The location is superb overlooking the wall where you could while away the hours people watching
The house itself is a mixture of ancient and new
With some parts looking like the pages of a history book and others such as the kitchen having the newest top line appliances
There was loads of room for 6 adults and 2 children
Cannot recommend enough Having to go home
- Jane (10/5): - The location is fantastic. The property is very quirky and comfortable. Communication with the hosts was excellent.
- robert (10/5): Would recommend. Great base for our weekend trip close by all the main attractions in town. - Very nice property, spacious and had everything we needed including some complimentary drinks on arrival and fresh milk/ water in the fridge. Andy was very helpful. N/A
- Clare (10/5): -
- Matty (10/5): Crookback House Nov 25 - It is so perfect for a group of friends
Has really good living area so you can relax in the house There is nothing not to like
- Linda (10/5): Fabulous stay, amazing hosts - Historic and quirky but well equipped
- John (10/5): - This accomodation was brilliant full of character so convienant for the city centre loved the extra touches prosecco beers etc Nothing
- Ross (10/5): Wonderful house and wonderful location - great hosts who had stocked kitchen well - Wonderful house and well furnished - a charming property. Nothing
- Allison (10/5): - Could not fault this accommodation would stay again had a a great weekend with my friends, beds very comfortable ,clean well equipped kitchen ,owner left drinks snaks for our party.very friendly, great location. Would have liked a kettle, rather than the hot tap that's our only dislike.
- Gail (10/5): A comfortable stay in a fabulous house which was so convenient to all the local amenities - The location was amazing. So close to everything and we were lucky to be there when it was the York Marathon so we could watch the runners from our window. The hosts were incredibly good, they replied to any questions we had straight away and nothing was too much trouble and the extras they provided were greatly appreciated. A lovely comfortable place to stay. I can’t say there is anything we didn’t like, it did the job we wanted.
- Denise (10/5): Excellent property - Lovely house, 4 good sized bedrooms. Excellent location right in the middle of York.
Hosts couldn't have made us more welcome with lots of treats left for us.
Would definitely recommend to family and friends. The 4th bedroom was a bit small but adequate for 2 nights.
- Nicola (10/5): Amazing place to stay - Fantastic house in an amazing location. The hosts very friendly and helpful. Lovely place to stay - would definitely recommend!
- tim (10/5): -
- clare (10/5): Perfect. Would recommend to anyone visiting York - Delightful historic but well equipped and modernised property. Beautifully presented with high quality amenities and linens. Owners definitely go the extra mile to ensure you have the best possible stay. Wonderful
Location in the city. Absolutely nothing
- Sandra (10/5): Querky historic property , perfect to enjoy the delights of the City of York. - The location of this property is excellent - walkable from the railway station and close to an array of shops and restaurants . Loved the outside terrace overlooking the city walls !
Great space for a group of friends to enjoy .
Very clean property .
Andy was very communicative and we appreciated the snacks and drinks left for our arrival - thank you ! Nothing !
- Jane (9/5): Fab stay in York, would recommend - Great host arranged balloons and generous welcome pack for our arrival to celebrate a special birthday. House is gorgeous and quirky in a great location.Outside terrace great as we were lucky with the weather. Not suitable if you’re not good at stairs and not very mobile. Upstairs rolltop bath is gorgeous but hard to get in and out of if you’re tall due to the sloping ceiling but it was great for our party of 8.
- Jenny (9/5): -
- sheila (9/5): Lovely place to stay with super hosts - Hosts were super, kind and thoughtful, welcome pack was a lovely touch. Lots of space for all of us and we loved that. Everything you could possibly need was supplied . Loved the quirkiness and kitchen, can’t beat location of this property . 2 of the mattresses weren’t the comfiest but this is really getting to the picky stage.
Remember it’s an old property right in the hustle and bustle of the city so can get noisy at night .
- jon (8/5): Great weekend - Spacious ideally located
- Karen (10/5): - Absolutely stunning house, great location, lovely little welcome pack left for us, great communication from the owners, fabulous coffee machine, definitely recommend this place 😀 N/A
- Charlie (10/5): The best weekend & stay! - We had a fantastic stay/visit for my mams 50th birthday surprise. She loved it! The property was super quirky and a great place to celebrate. Andy was lovely & we really appreciated all he did with leaving the hamper and prosecco, to helping looking for one of the party members jewellery. The only thing I could possibly say was the top floor bedrooms mattress was a little on the hard side.
- Lynn (10/5): Wonderful, our Australian relatives adored it - It was so unique and absolutely beautiful.
We really enjoyed the terrace overlooking the city walls and it was furnished absolutely beautifully
Beds were comfy everything a delight Nothing it was a perfect location. It suited us and the house Andy and Angela were terrific in keeping in touch with us.
- Emily (10/5): Exceptional - What a brilliant stay at crookback house to celebrate our aunties 60th. We needed accommodation for 8 ladies and it was perfect. The house is full of character and in the perfect location and bigger than you think on the pictures. The balcony was great and a little sun trap right next to the wall.
Andy and Angela are great hosts and we really appreciated the bottle of Prosecco and snacks on arrival - they were the perfect start to our trip! We would definitely stay here again when visiting York.
- Georgina (9/5): Fantastic stay in a lovely characterful house in a great central location! - We had a lovely stay with friends at Crookback House to celebrate my husband's birthday. The location was brilliant with everything on the doorstep and the house was cosy and characterful. Communication from Andy was great and he went out of his way to make sure everything was straightforward for us. There was plenty of room for us all and we felt at home immediately. Although it was only the end of March, the outside terrace was quite sheltered and it was warm enough to sit out when the sun shone. We even managed to find very reasonably priced parking just round the corner for the duration of our stay. We'd definitely come again, thank you! A small freezer would have been helpful and a slightly bigger fridge (if there was a small countertop freezer the fridge could be replaced by a one without an icebox, which would give more fridge space) - we did a supermarket shop on the way and brought lots of breakfast food, fruit juice, frozen croissants/pastries etc and couldn't fit everything in.
The bedroom on the upper floor only had drawer storage, we appreciate there's not space for a wardrobe because of the sloping ceiling but a hanging rail of some sort would have helpful.
There are no coffee tables in the lounge - we sat round chatting and having drinks snacks and there was nowhere to put our glasses, we ended up bringing the heavy stools up from the kitchen to use as makeshift tables.
- Jim (10/5): Fantastic Stay - Absolutely beautiful and full of character. It’s just like it is in the pictures. Amazing location right beside the city wall/gate and so convenient for all the shops and cafes of the old town. The character of the house fits perfectly with all the history around it. Lovely welcome basket of snacks and drinks, great communication and really lovely hosts. Had a brilliant time. Nothing!
- Jane (10/5): Beautiful Georgian home - Crookback House is located close to everything York has to offer, the Minster is a two minute walk, the front of the property looks over the side of Monk Bar and the back and side over the City Walls. The house is beautifully decorated and well equipped and very clean. It's an interesting Georgian house. Andy and Angela are brilliant hosts. Would definitely book again if we needed accommodation for 8. Our two young Grandsons loved it, and the model shop opposite!
- Stephanie (10/5): Exceptional - What a beautiful house Crookback house is, in a perfect location with very helpful hosts. Lots of thoughtful touches and happily sorted out our friends 50 birthday balloons and made it the perfect start to her celebration weekend.
- Malin (10/5): Exceptional - The house is in the perfect location to access the city centre, it was very tidy and clean lovely facilities. The owner of the house was lovely and welcoming very helpful would definitely stay again! Nothing loved it all!
- Alan (10/5): Fab city break in York at a historic house in a superb location right on the city wall and gate - Fabulous old property stooped in history right on the city wall and a gentle level stroll to the Minster and Shambles. Location was amazing for exploring the city centre. Rooms all had something interesting about them and we felt right at home. Andy and Angela were excellent hosts and very helpful offering as much or as little information as you would like! Only minor thing I could think of was the number of stairs which we knew when we booked and are used to so hardly a negative particularly as it gifted amazing views of the city wall and minster from most rooms. To lie in bed and look at the Minster tower was a treat!
- Zena (9/5): A lovely weekend to explore all York has to offer. - We loved the ambience of this beautiful period home. The location was excellent for access to the city's restaurants, cafes and sights. Communication with owner was superb and they left some nice snacks, drinks and edibles on arrival for us which was a welcome and lovely touch. The home is set over 4 levels with steep and narrow stairs - we were aware of this - but not suitable for anyone with mobility issues and young children.
- Joanna (10/5): Beautiful house, perfect location. - Beautiful house full of character. Excellent central location. Hosts had provided everything for a perfect stay. Extras like prosecco snacks milk were really appreciated. Couldn't fault anything. Thanks Andy and Angela for a great stay. Nothing all brilliant.
- Claire (8/5): Very good - Excellent location for a stay in York
- Owen (10/5): A York Gem. - Fantastic central location. Rooms spacious, extremely comfortable and full of period charm.
Andy and Angela thoughtfully left additional extras such as prosecco and nibbles to add to our experience.
Our accommodation was so lovely we had to drag ourselves away to explore the area. We can not think of one negative to say about our experience.
- Hannah (7/5): Good location that gives you a base in the City that you can keep returning to during the day. - The location was as central as you could possibly get in York which has its upsides and downsides (noise from the streets below).
Kitchen was well stocked and the property was super clean. Comfort elements - at least one of the beds (I slept in) was very uncomfortable and the shower wasn’t close to being warm.
- Karen (10/5): A perfect house for a group with amazing facilities and an excellent host! - Everything! So much charm, fantastic facilities, home from home and the location was perfect for time in the city.
- Scurtis921 (10/5): Amazing home on the heart of York - Such an amazing place to stay in! It really adds a different dimension to a stay over in a historic city, being in a place like this which feels full of character and history (which people can read about in the hosts information book). Andy and Angela were great hosts, leaving a lovely surprise for my sister in laws 60th birthday.
The rooms were very clean and comfortable, a cosy living room, easy to work heating and well stocked kitchen added that extra touch! The location is spot on. Couldn’t ask for more.
Thanks again, we will definitely be back.
- Julie (10/5): Exceptional - Loved the unique property.
- Colleen (9/5): Great place for a weekend away - The location was phenomenal. Right in the middle of the city but lovely and quiet too.
All mod cons provided in the apartment.
Excellent space for a group of 8 to hang out. Plenty of seating and enough chairs around the dining table.
All rooms had their own bathroom which was great. A couple of the beds are a bit too soft /possibly past their prime. Some in our group found them uncomfortable.
- Simone (10/5): Excellent time and would definitely stay in this property again - Excellent location. Beautiful property kitted out to a high standard and well kept. Hosts very accommodating and friendly, left us supplies for on arrival.
- Sarah (10/5): Great place for a York adventure - Beautiful house near to all to see in York
Fits 8 comfortably and lovely to have a large living room
The owners left so many extras, we didn’t have to buy anything
The beds are comfortable and house easy and quickly to heat What’s not to like!!
- Helen (10/5): Exceptional -
- Andrea (10/5): Would recommend location and the house. We will definitely be back. Also milk, snacks and drinks left for our arrival wh - Full of charm and character. Ideal location and the luxury of a roof terrace We loved everything. If we had to nitpick the roof terrace could do with a light. As we sat out until late and it was dark.
- Jan (10/5): Fabulous stay! - Owners provided everything we needed plus arranged balloons etc for birthday lady rooftop terrace was great luckily we had hood weather to enjoy it
Excellent location
Lovely house , not suitable for folks with poor mobility lots and lots of stairs ,
- Richard (10/5): Amazing property in great location. Owner was really helpful. Would - Great location. Good restaurants near by. Owner communication good and helpful with local advice. Would def use again. Probably needed 8 of each type of each glass.
- Lynda (9/5): Superb -
- Sally (9/5): We all enjoyed it, especially being so near all the facilities and historic sights - Location was excellent, lots of great cafes nearby for breakfast Car parking was expensive
- Hayley (10/5): Beautiful property, amazing location, stunning views. There isn’t anything I didn’t like about this property. - The House is stunning, the location and views are amazing. You could spend the day in the house and on the balcony and not need to go anywhere. We already want to book again and we only left today.

I can not tell you enough how special this property is. We stayed in the top room. Some tea and coffee facilities would have been great.
- Helen (10/5): Fabulous x woukd love to visit again x would be beautiful at xmas but equally good in summer with the roof top x - What a fabulous place, lovingly restored by its owners Andy and Angela. 4 bedrooms with comfortable beds. Plenty of space for a large group, we didn't actually want to go out x given the Main Street is literally outside the door didn't need a car or transport all weekend x a hidden gem x with a wonderful rooftop terrace feels like you can touch the wall. If infirm there are a number of stairs being on four floors
- Lisa (10/5): Beautiful property with amazing views. - Beautiful property very close to York centre with shops/pubs and restaurants close by. Our host Andy was excellent, we had all the information we required ahead of our stay and we were made to feel very welcome. Wouldn’t hesitate to stay again when visiting York. Nothing, the property was amazing.
- Rossano (10/5): Fantastic! - Everything! Lovely, unusual property that was well equipped for our stay. The little touches like milk, crisps etc was really appreciated and made our group feel very welcome! Some of the bathrooms are really quite small but I don’t think that could really be helped… doesn’t detract from what really is a lovely property!
- Helen (10/5): Andy has created a little piece of heaven in York. The moment you walk into the property you are greeted by a quaint lit - EVERYTHING!!!! absolutely amazing property. Greeted by Andy who couldn’t do enough for us. The whole place is outstanding. He has thought of everything to make your stay as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. - Mandy (10/5): Best stay ever anywhere - Crookback house is absolutely amazing.
An old Victorian house on the city wall, with an abundance of character, the location is spot on.
There's nothing the owners haven't thought of, every need is catered for. A fully functional kitchen with everything you could need, even fresh milk in the fridge on arrival.
The attention to detail is fantastic, giving the house a welcoming feeling from the moment you enter
. A fan in each bedroom which we definitely needed as the weekend has been so hot.
The bar is a great touch, cosy and comfortable.
The beds are so comfortable, they, as well as the bedding are high quality, and absolutely spotlessly clean.
The outside furnished terrace is a lovely place to relax with a glass of wine.
We were there to celebrate my 60th birthday and Andy, the owner, very kindly left a bottle of prosecco, crisps snacks and sweets for us.
We couldn't complain about anything at all, each bedroom has either a bath or shower and a toilet.
I could honestly talk about it all day there's so much to say about the place, and it's all good. Andy met us there to let us in, he made us feel really welcome, a friendly helpful host, I totally recommend the house,.
Certainly value for money, I would definitely book it again.
Thank you so much for giving us a fabulous place to stay. There is nothing we didn't like, there are quite a lot of stairs, but it is a four story building
- Miriam (10/5): Fantastic city, accommodation and hosts. - Amazing period property, beautifully decorated with so much character. Location couldn’t have been better as was just inside the city walls. Host could not have been more accommodating, so many extras were provided on arrival there is no need to pack the basics. Will definitely be back. Nothing
- Michael (10/5): Perfect in every way - We have had a great time here at Crookback House. It has been a perfect base for our business trip over the past few days. If you want somewhere that is a little different for all the right reasons, this place fits the bill as you can see from the pictures. It is comfortable, classy with all the amenities anyone could want including a huge lounge area, well equipped kitchen, a beautifully designed bar area, 4 great sized bedrooms and a rooftop patio area only a few feet from the walls. It’s the easiest 5 star rating I’ve given in a long time. Nothing - it was perfect
- Kirsty (10/5): Nobody wanted to leave. We had a fantastic weekend - we all want to come back!!! - Absolutely everything. Location was perfect. The attention to detail in each of the rooms was wonderful.
The host was amazing. The extra touches really gives this place the wow factor!! Not a thing. We all loved our stay
- Philip (10/5): Fantastic large character property in a perfect location - Perfect location within the City walls close to some great pubs and restaurants.
Andy was a great host. Friendly and Helpful.
4 good sized bedrooms with comfortable beds and toiletries provided.
Lovely new Kitchen with everything you need to cook or just enjoy the view with a Coffee.
Very much enjoyed the Communal areas. The terrace, large living room and dining area, and especially the downstairs snug/pub.
We had a great stay and very much hope to back in the future. Nothing
- Anna (10/5): Beautiful house that has everything for an enjoyable stay. - The house is amazing and the host was very friendly and helpful, even before I made the booking, answering my questions. The rooms are a great size with comfortable beds and fluffy towels. The house feels spacious and communal areas made us feel at home, so it was a nice place to relax with friends. Plenty of toilets for everyone! Having beer, Prosecco, coffee beans, teas, crisps, biscuits, bottled water, milk and even ice pops provided was a very nice touch. The house is in a fantastic location close to lots of restaurants and very close walking distance to all the tourist attractions. We enjoyed our stay and I wish we could have stayed there longer. This house ticks all the boxes and more! Nothing.
- Christine (10/5): Perfect Spot for a group get together with plenty of character - Character property with plenty of space for 7! Location at the heart of the city. We enjoyed prosecco on the balcony overlooking the wall with the property across multiple floors, 4 good sized bedrooms. We especially enjoyed the downstairs pub snug having a 'bar crawl' through the house before going out. Hosts were lovely and communicated to ensure we had everything we needed. 5 stars from us - we were sad to leave!
