Guest Reviews
- Conor (10/5): A MUST! Wonderful family business in a beautiful place. Would return 10/10! - Beautifully decorated hotel that feels like a home, with spacious and well equipped rooms and a spectacular homemade family recipe restaurant. Great variety of options in the restaurant and for breakfast.
Brilliantly located with a stunning view of Mount Kinabalu and nearby for local hiking areas.
The staff/owners were unbelievably helpful and supportive with recommendations for activities and for taxis, onward transport etc.
We are so grateful for the whole team for a wonderful experience. It’s a must! Note - requires a car to access many local walking spots, but don’t let that stop you from choosing Tranquera as the owners were so helpful with transporting us, even taking us places themselves when they deemed the taxi quote to be too high!
- Patrick (9/5): It's like visiting your relatives in the countryside, homely and relaxing - The staff were superb. The experience was exactly like visiting relatives in the countryside. Friendly, casual, accomodating.
The food was good, didn't seem entirely like the Peranakan food I'm used to, but it was tasty, hearty, and satisfying. Having breakfast and dinner on the premises was a pleasure especially on cold mornings/nights.
The beds and pillows were fabulous: this trip was 1 week long and we stayed at 3 other hotels in KK and Kundasang, and nowhere did we experience beds/pillows as comfy as in Tranquera House. I wasn't previously familiar with this Selangor-based manufacturer, but now I know. Hopefully they'll ship to Singapore.
The location was fine. Surprisingly cooler than another resort we stayed at just 15 minutes away. So strange. We especially liked being able to walk around outside without fear of traffic. Unfortunately there were a few hiccups. It was really noisy: the floors creak with every step, and the walls are so thin that you hear every conversation from adjoining rooms. I'm not exaggerating, it really was that bad.
Yes, there are lots of house rules, including about reducing noise, but ultimately these aren't really enforceable, are they? Short of rebuilding the structure and incorporating soundproofing, I doubt this can be improved upon.
Funky smelling bathroom, but that seems quite common and is probably due to the existing sewage infrastructure in Kundasang.
There are no blackout curtains, so blinding sunlight streams in by 5.45am. Coupled with noise from downstairs (cars, humans), this makes the use of eye-masks and earplugs an absolute matter of survival.
Despite this, and because the overall atmosphere and the staff were so pleasant, we really hope to visit again soon.
- Mats (9/5): - This was a top notch experience. The Tranquera is a proper mountain lodge, the rooms are decorated with intention and care, which I found to be rare at this price level in Malaysia. However, my room had nice products in the bathroom, nice lighting, a nice seating area and felt nice to be in. The shared area and restaurant is ok too, it was nice to sit and grab a beer outside. One thing didn't work, and it wasn't really the hotels fault. But the parking lot is all the way up to the restaurant, and in the morning a guy was warming up his Ford Ranger leaving it idling right in front of it, so it smelled like exhaust everywhere. They could consider asking people not to do that, or even restrict the parking right in front of the restaurant, perhaps.
- andreas (10/5): - Nähe zur Natur, ruhig und komfortabel
- Ahmad Nur Ilham (9/5): -
- Abbasy (9/5): The near perfect stay. - Just about everything. Uneven toilet door - a bit rough to open & close and squeaky sound. Thin walls, sound from outside the room might disturb you if you want to rest/sleep during the day.
- Robin (10/5): If you go to Kundasang, there is no better place to stay!! - The staff and service were amazing. Friendly, helpful, anticipating needs. Food was also amazing. I wish I had more time there to eat more! Nothing
- Djonin (8/5): A charming and peaceful hilltop guesthouse with lovely views and atmosphere. - I really loved the location high on the hill — it’s quiet, peaceful, and offers beautiful views of Mount Kinabalu. The Peranakan-inspired patterns and design details throughout the property give it a lot of character. The guesthouse has a warm, homey feel, with its wide wooden staircase and open corridors. It was also great that they provided games like badminton, archery, and board games, which kept the kids entertained. I especially appreciated the option to pre-order dinner, as the property is a bit isolated — the food selection was good and very convenient. The rooms are somewhat small and quite basic. Breakfast was decent, but could benefit from a few more Western options.

- Azah Abdul Aziz (9/5): - Our dinner menu is top-notch. Water heater functioning well. The room is not soundproof; we can hear the next-door tenant making a phone call.
- Charles (8/5): We stayed 2 night, we have good experience, the charges are reasonable - Good location, quiet, in natural surroundings, not too big, friendly staff, Hot water supply can improve , water filtration can also be improved
- jasmine (8/5): Comfortable with great Nyonya fare. - Good location, with breathtaking views. Quiet and clean. Good water pressure. Nyonya dinner was very good, with generous portions. Breakfast could be improved.
- Hwang Yang (9/5): Very good service. The staff are polite and flexible with our needs - Ideal location for a relaxing holiday Can be chilly at night in the room. Perhaps can add a portable heater.
- Chia (10/5): Enjoy my stay at Tranquera House. Staff is friendly and place is clean - Nice and clean everything perfect
- You (10/5): -
- Wi Li (10/5): - Clean room and delicious peranakan food My husband lost his favorite umbrella; he had left it by the front door.
- Koh Wan (8/5): -
- Wing Yan (8/5): - As a hotel upon the mountain, this hotel is comfortable and clean. All the staff are nice. Note flies at the restaurant during the breakfast time
- Emily (10/5): - Was so lovely staying here, amazing scenery, the food was INCREDIBLE make sure to pre order! Nothing
- Nur Izatti (10/5): A very pleasent stay? Staff was very nice and will surely come again - The common area was so good that we even stay and play during our night there and play with the games provided none
- paul (8/5): - Excellent location. Capacity just nice not to be overcrowded. Very good for quite vacation.
- Cherry (10/5): - This is not the kind of food that we were used to but it filled a hole. The Malaysian options were the best. Loads of moths if you like those. Service was good and room facilities were good. The walls were a bit thin for listening to a radio in the evening. Close to Kinabalu Park and Kundusang for trips out. It was difficult to go for a walk around the area because the mountain was closed off from the road going up past the house.
- Joshua David (9/5): Lovely place, good food and location. - Overall, it was a good experience.
* The place was very clean and tidy.
* Hot water was functional (basic expectation, but a lot of home stay in Kundasang doesn't)
* Love the corner for kids!
* The food was good! My in laws are baba nyonya and I had quite a bit of baba nyonya food. And I'm glad the food tastes authentic!
* The lighting in the room was sufficiently bright and I like that there's a lot of plug points. Booking
* I found out that if you book it directly with them, the price for my room was RM320 instead of RM420.
Room
* The toilet door hinge was misaligned and we had to use a bit of force to do so.
* There was a random metal screw on the floor, which was a bit dangerous for my toddler child.
Food & drinks
* I ordered teh tarik, and it was very thin, lacking both milk and tea.
* As I was drinking the teh tarik halfway, I felt something inside and when I spit out, it was a fly.... Raised this to the staff and they apologised.
- Sfloo (10/5): Kundasang trip - Quiet and tranquility. Is bit distance away from town.
- Chin (8/5): - The coolness and the peace at night. We were not told that we have to pre order the dinner. Didn't have the chance to eat the nyonya dishes and end up having maggi noodles with egg. Although we have enjoyed the maggi noodles but given a choice would rather taste the nyonya dishes. Should have mentioned in the when booked the stay oh. Oh yes! Better change the net for the window as it has holes and insect flow in
- jacky (9/5): -
- Syamim (7/5): It was great but would be better if got tv - Peaceful location No tv
- Peter (9/5): Lovely spot, nice location in a nice new b&b - Lovely and tranquil family run location away from the bustle of the town. Food was Nonya style, tasty and authentic Nothing really-all bases covered at this nice new and clean property
- Xantal (10/5): -
- Amy Lim SH (9/5): -
- Ahmad (8/5): Very good - Good small property in Kundasang
- Michael (9/5): Great quiet spot to visit the surrounds. - Very friendly and very homely. The food was excellent... location very quiet. Helpful in our planning.. It's a bit of a drive on a hectic road to get places. Perhaps more information available on what to do more localised (walks, points of nature/interest)
- Tuck (9/5): Superb -
- Zuhanidah (8/5): Very good -
- Fadilah (10/5): Exceptional - Love the ambience. Bed was comfy.
enough space for my children play area.
the cafe even has some games for my children. Host was friendly too, showed my children their cute rabbits! nil
- Lana (10/5): Simply perfect. - Baba nyonya touch to it. Amazing options for dinner/lunch, by a chef from malacca. Owner was so friendly , we had a chat with him. If we were to visit Kundasang again, we are definitely staying here.
- Khairunisa (8/5): Very good -
- User141022 (8/5): Very good - Clean. Unique deco
- David (10/5): Wonderful - This is a wonderful hotel on the slopes of Mount Kinabulu in a modern building with all the necessary facilities and wonderful staff who did all they could to make my stay present. It appears that great care has been taken in the choice of fixtures and fitings and all was in a simple modern style except for the reception area which was a riot of colour. Those who appreciate good food told me that the restaurant was excellent.
The hotel has a good garden, wonderful plants in containers and its own slice of secondary rain forest. Visitors travelling by car really need Google Maps to navigate to this excellent hotel.
- Madeleine (8/5): Pleasant stay in good location - Good location and very close to Mount Kinabalu.
Good size bedroom which was tastefully decorated and very clean.
Lovely dinner at the hotel. Duvet was too small for two people. The room was cold due to altitude and window not fully closing. This also caused there to be lots of insects inside the room.
- Alfred (10/5): Exceptional -
- Zsofia (10/5): Exceptional - Very nice place, beautifully decorated and clean. Excellent in the area. Bit rough to approach, but it is at a quiet location. The staff was very kind.
- Zuhanidah (10/5): Exceptional -
- Grace (9/5): Superb - Staff are friendly, nice place & clean!!
- Elizabeth (10/5): Perfect Little Escape near Mt Kinabalu - I liked everything about this stay, from the warm welcome and friendly hostess, the beautiful decor, to the delicious home-styled food! Perfect place to just relax, slow down and enjoy nature. Nothing. Everything was great!
- Mohammad (10/5): Exceptional -
- Khairul (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ratna (7/5): Good -
- Yvonne (9/5): The restaurant had excellent homestyled Peranakan food. Very nice place for 1 or 2 nights so you are close to the mounta - Clean and well maintained
- Zhlau (9/5): Superb - A very unique theme which you don't really find in Sabah. Nicely decorated and furnished. Food was great and they even prepared toy archery, board and card games, the kids enjoyed it since there are not much activities in the night. Nothing in particular. View on Mount Kinabalu could be better but trees would need to be trimmed, so better not for environmental conservation.
- Choon (9/5): Superb - owner are very kind and helpful in supporting special request sound proof
- Angela (8/5): Comfortable and friendly hotel - Very clean and comfortable rooms. the food was delicious unfortunately no view of Mt Kinabalu
- Yap (9/5): Superb -
- Dennis (8/5): Cosy place! - A fantastic place with excellent dinner option. The Nonya dishes are fabulous. Bicycles and board games to keep the kids entertained. Overall, a good place to hang around for 2-3 nights at Kundasang The staff can be more enthusiastic but they do provide adequate service and nice to my kids.
- Arulchelvam (8/5): Very good -
- Michael (8/5): Very good - It was clean, comfy. The Staff were very polite and welcoming. Dinner was really tasty and felt like home.
- Mia (9/5): We had a very pleasant stay, shall pay another visit if we were in Kundasang next time! :) - We went to stay for one night after descending from Mount Kinabalu. We checked in around 8pm, the front desk staff welcomed us warmly despite the late check-in time, and they served us dinner hot while we were at the room showering and changing to fresh cloths. The evening was very chilly that night with drizzling rain, but the hot delicious nyonya food has brought us the warmth we need and the dining hall felt pretty cozy with very attentive staffs standby for assistance. The room is clean, equipped with all basic necessities you will need at a vacation room, the only downside is the shower may not be consistent with it’s heat and take time to heat up (probably because it was a chilly raining evening that night), but all is good, and we were so grateful that the guest house provided quick laundry service. You will only need to passed your cloths over to the counter and you will get it the next morning. My favorite part is that you will get to enjoy your breakfast at the picnic table and bench at the garden area, with serene forest around you. We had a very pleasant stay, shall pay another visit if we were in Kundasang next time! :) Just the non-consistent heat for the shower, the rest are great.
- Akmal (10/5): Exceptional - The classical interior design, amazing serenity, and amazing dinner 😋
- Henry (9/5): Superb -
- Henry (9/5): A lil bit of Malacca /Penang with a view of the majestic Kinabalu range. - The dinner we had was excellent. Great authentic nyonya food and reasonable prices.
We could see the top of the mountain from our room.
Wonderful hospitality shown not just by the owners but all the staff8 Carrying luggage up a flight of stairs.
No tea /coffee sachets.
- Siti (9/5): Superb -
- Anwar (8/5): Good place - The staff were helpful and friendly and the room was clean , overall the place was peaceful and calm. But the location is far from the restaurants and market , so one night will be worth it but not more. The location
- Fathiha (9/5): Superb - We stayed here for 3 days 2 nights and the experienced was great! Nothing to complaint. Breakfast and dinner were good. You guys should try for the pineapple curry with prawn as it was so tasty and meet our expectations. He prepared chicken soup for dinner (FOC) to my baby and I appreciate so much. My baby loved it. The staffs were very polite and a big thanks for their kindness. The chef and his wife were very friendly and easy to communicate. The staff patiently sending a mineral water to our room repeatedly as my baby still drinking milk. Overall we are satisfied staying in Tranquera House. Yet a little for improvement, the owner could place a mirror in the room instead of bathroom since im doing my makeup during the vacation. So a bit hard for me. The bed a quite small for 3 of us but the owner managed to prepare a single mattress for my 1 year old baby.
- Monica (6/5): Pleasant - It was modern and not too expensive. The room was comfortable. The staff were very nice. The rooms were very loud with children in the halls. The breakfast menu was quite limited. The room was pretty dirty.
- Darling (10/5): Exceptional -
- Hui (8/5): Very good -
- Fabian (9/5): Great family-run hotel with superb cuisine. - First and foremost it must be said that the hotel owners are incredibly warm-hearted people. We were greeted extremely kindly and everything was explained to us thoroughly, with all our questions addressed. They even organized a tour for us and communication via WhatsApp worked perfectly. The rooms are spacious with plenty of room to spread out. The bed was very comfortable and the Wi-Fi works very well throughout the entire house. The bathroom is spacious enough and there is hot water for showering. However, it did get a bit chilly in the rooms in the evenings. The ladies in the kitchen went out of their way to cook vegetarian dishes for us, which is not always easy in this part of the world. They prepared something new for us every day and the chefs were very creative which was truly great. The hotel is a bit far from the entrance to the national park requiring transportation. Unfortunately, the rooms were extremely noisy and we had to sleep with earplugs, which was not a problem for us. There isn't really a window so while the room always has fresh air, it also gets chilly. Breakfast, unlike dinner, was a bit lacking with only toast and jam. They could improve by catering a bit more to Western tourists.
- Emma (8/5): Very good - Great overnight stay. Staff are super friendly and place is very new. Rooms were excellent with fab bathrooms and comfy beds. Food was good. Up in the hills above Kundasang where air was notably fresher. We really enjoyed our stay. Pretty quiet when we were there but noise did travel a bit so imagine it might get a bit noisy when full.
- Tung (8/5): Very good -
- Syafiqa (10/5): Excellent - Love the interior, very clean, staff super friendly The breakfast menu. But still delicious
- Shin (7/5): Good - Food is superb. Room is clean. Plenty parking space. Location is ideal, surrounded by Kundasang Golf range. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 Very poor sound proofing :( Also, Could have provide some coffee and tea bags in the room.
- Jenna (7/5): Ok but location is very far - It's very modern Would be great if there were TV, table or sofa
